4. The Jarvey Farm

Lenny recalls that Rhoades was very interested in the lost Quaker exiles from Boston in the 1600s. He described them as a mystery like Roanoke, Virginia but a mystery he thought could be solved. Often during his lectures the professor would go on tangents talking about the Quaker Ezekiel Cade and the infamous lost village of Cade’s Rest that he suspected might be right under everyone’s nose on the east coast.

Malcolm has a distracted moment in which he opens his eyes wide and then squints them in a sort of stretching way. He catches himself and looks at Lenny, They were down right next to the creek and road up to Dunwich, but the professor thought he found somein different. That’s when they left and took some campin gear. I think they headed further up the creek but I can’t rightly say.

Mickey glances dow to find Adelaide’s foot gently massaging the inside of his calf. As Mickey looks up at the woman she smiles again and then turns and starts up a conversation with Edith about her chores in the morning. She does not remove her foot.

So what’s brought you folks down hereabout? asks Malcolm sitting back and patting his full stomach.

Malcolm scrunches his face in confusion at Manny's statements and then furrows his brow at Jimmy's. You ain't fixin to make any trouble here're you? At Lenny's statement, Malcolm turns to the man exclaiming. At's it! The professor was all on about the place, though he said he didn't find it... That was afore they left.

Malcolm’s face creases with worry in response to his unanswered question as Edith stands. A course, a course… right this way gentlemen… The woman leads Manny and Jimmy upstairs past a few doors and to a simple bedroom with two small beds. The mattresses are comfortable and the linens soft. In between the beds is a small table with a wash basin full of water, some towels and a small cloudy mirror. Tucked in one corner is a small desk with an oil lamp that Edith lights before she retreats to the door. Breakfast will be at 5:30. Good night gentlemen…

Jimmy’s intestinal discomfort seems to be worsening as he feels a sweat and dizziness starting to materialize.

Shortly after Manny and Jimmy leave the table, Old Pete raises and says good night by loosing another fat wad into his cup and shambling out the door. As Edith returns down the stairs, Adelaide removes her foot from Mickey’s leg and stands to collect dishes. Edith smiles and says Malcolm, can you show these boys to the hay barn? Malcolm seems to snap out of his worry as he raises in a start. Course… where’re my manners. This way, gentlemen…

Malcolm leads Lenny and Mickey out across the yard in the cool night to the hay barn. The air is heavy with the promise of rain and the smell of the pigs is pungent. As you pass a shed off of the pig pen a loud thud is heard following a deep pig snort. Malcom calls out Brutus, you thick headed beast! No ones after yer sows!

Malcom takes you into the hay barn and up a ladder to the loft. There are blankets and pillows laid out on hay and a small lantern that gives a little light.

Malcolm turns to both of you Well, this is it. Hope you boys have a good night. We start early on the farm so breakfast is around 5-5:30. You need anything we’re just up in the house. Good night! Malcom retreats through the loft and out into the night.
