I thought it was dex+proficiency in tool.
Think of Thieves tools as another skill.
For you it would be 1d20+3(dex)+2(proficiency)

Realizing the state of the wolf, Alyria suppressed the blush that wanted to stain her cheeks with embarrassment. Happily letting the others pass, she goes to inspect the items on the table while hoping that Briar and Ashtar snatch up a bottle or three of wine.

Briar fidgets with her tools and just can't seem to get the cabinet unlocked.
On the table, Alyria finds an almost empty cask of wine, two carved wooden goblets, a pipe rack, and a candelabrum.

Ashtar lines his staff up to the lock and gives it a quick smack. The locks shatters from the blow. Opening it up the ground finds a heavy crossbow, a light crossbow, a hand crossbow, and 20 bolts for each weapon...

Seeing no use for crossbows for himself, Ashtar moved to cover the door while his companions finished up in the room.

The fairy gasps with joy and scoops up the hand crossbow eagerly. She pulls the already holstered crossbow from her thigh and holds them up proudly framing each side of her face, wearing a wicked grin. "I feel way more confident now," she snickers.She adds the stowed bolts to her quiver and lashes the second crossbow to her other thigh. "Ready to go!"
