With nothing else coming to mind, Ashtar jumped over to the altar to inspect it.

With a chuckle, the paladin crosses over as well. "I expected it too, my friend." Seeing the blade already there, she takes the same caution as Briar by acting like a house cat. With careful nudges from her shield, she pushes it off the alter.

As Ashtar and Alyria step onto the dais by the altar, the hidden door you entered through slams shut with a resounding bang, trapping the party inside. The air grows thick with a sudden, oppressive energy.

The eerie silence is shattered as the chanting rises once more, echoing off the stone walls. Twelve dark apparitions materialize on the ledges overlooking the room. Each spectral figure is cloaked in black robes, holding torches that burn with an unsettling, inky fire that seems to consume the surrounding light. Where their faces should be, there are only voids—dark, empty spaces that seem to stare into your very soul.

"One must die!" they chant in unison, their voices a haunting, rhythmic chorus. "One must die! One must die!" The dreadful repetition fills the chamber, pressing down on your minds with a sinister insistence.

OOC:
Okay, pretend I didn’t swat at that dagger after all.
Picking up the sacrificial dagger from the alter, she strides purposefully towards the apparition standing at the portcullis. "None of them will die today," she decreed vehemently as she swung the weapon at the spectral.
OOC:
If she can reach it,
Alyria grabs at the lever to open the gate and attempts to force the door to retract.

Eye of the Storm had moved to A-10 in my previous post.
The Tabaxi aimed his bow at the void of the cultist's head.
"How about YOU die!? Let us out!"
May 18, 2024 10:50 pm
Back to the alter, facing as many of the cultists as she can, Briar defiantly yells out, "I KNEW IT" to the sudden apparitions. "Get a new gig, already!" She finishes with the hint of accusing boredom in her tone, implying that the sudden arrival tactic has become so predictable as to not even be startling anymore. Pulling her crossbow to the ready, she waits for the first sign of movement to release a bolt.
May 19, 2024 1:48 am
The ghostly cultists do not move or flinch at the possible attacks. They continue their endless chanting. "One must die!" they chant in unison, "One must die! One must die!"
OOC:
@Khulod,@Redamancy If you two would like to roll attacks go for it. We are not in initiative (yet).

Not at all surprised by the appearance of the apparition, yet no less appalled at it, Ashtar noticed that it did not seem threatening despite the chant calling for murder.

"You seek a sacrifice?" Ashtar asked it. "How disappointingly predictable. Why are there no apparitions that seek pastries. Are pastries not far more delectable?" He sighed, not optimistic about the answer forthcoming.

The childlike fairy’s attention wavers for a moment as she hears Ashtar’s question and she lolls her head back to express overwhelming enjoyment in the sentiment. "Ohhh, I loooove pastries. We should totally seek pastries after this."

Coming back to the reality of her moment, she stares daggers to the blank vacant space where a face should be. "I’m pretty sure we’ve killed enough today. But I can do a few more if that’s the only way out of here. How about … you?" She scans the creatures across from her and releases her bolt.

Oh, I assumed they were ghostly spectrals, which is why I swung at them. I didn’t think it’d do anything. In that case, my action choice is to use the lever and raise the portcullis. Having an exit is more important.

The chant of "One must die! One must die! One must die!" echoes through the chamber, each repetition growing louder and more insistent. The torches held by the ghostly cultists pulse in time with the beat, casting eerie shadows that dance across the walls.

Alyria rushes to the portcullis and begins cranking it open to let everyone in. Her muscles strain as she works the old mechanism, but she quickly realizes with mounting dread that the wrench is broken. It no longer stays open on its own. If she lets go of the crank, the portcullis will slam back down with a thunderous crash, trapping anyone who hasn't yet made it through.

Briar nocks an arrow and aims at one of the ghostly cultists, her hands steady despite the unnerving atmosphere. She releases, but the arrow flies right past the apparition's head, ricocheting off the stone wall and clattering uselessly to the floor. The cultists' chant continues.

@grifter730,@Khulod,@Redamancy,@Kilikina Can I get everyone to roll initiative.
Is the plan to flee or fight?
I will post a map when home depending on the answer.

The whole party sprints to the open gate, hearts pounding as they race to escape. Just as the last person steps off the altar platform, the room descends into chaos.

The dozen ghostly cultists break formation, their spectral forms whipping around the room in a frenzy. Their chants morph into shrill, discordant wails that pierce the air.

From the mound of human flesh and bones, long, fleshy tentacles lash out with sickening speed. A monstrous maw forms, jagged with broken bones, snapping hungrily. The grotesque creature heaves itself across the ground, its mass sliding with a horrific squelching sound, and begins chasing after the party with terrifying speed. The stench of decay fills the air as the monstrous abomination closes in.

OOC:
I assume L10 is the portcullis exit, right?
Nothing about this cursed mansion shocked Ashtar any more. As the cultists and the ooze appeared, he only had his mind on making it out of this room alive. There were far too many of them to handle, especially on their home territory. He aimed and blasted at the skeleton blocking the portcullis.
OOC:
Hex on the skeleton blocking the way, and then blasting it with Eldritch Blast. If it goes down, he'll go to 2 squares behind the skeleton (L12). If it's still standing, he'll move to 2 squares in front of it (L8).

@Khulod if you move to G-14 you will take 3 attacks of opportunity. If you still wish to run, I will need 3 con saves.
