2. Digging in Sand

Mar 4, 2024 7:10 am
Hural inspects the crowd, attempting to more clearly discern the groups of seedy characters. He hopes to determine which of the seedy groups appears the most confident and professional - they would be the ones he would approach to make a deal.
Mar 4, 2024 10:41 am
Before coming out here, Marya has checked in with her informant network - asking around about the elements of the underworld that are typically involved in protection rackets. She was interested in the names, and any useful information about how they work, possible weaknesses they might have.

She uses the knowledge she got from checking in with her contacts, to heighten her awareness and attention as she keeps her eyes open for danger, but also opportunities to contact the right group of criminals here.
Mar 6, 2024 4:14 am
When he gets closer, Rook notices right away that the person he's approached is wearing gang signs. "Fifty Solaris, and I'll tell you where they are and where you can shove it."

A person behind him snickers, and you can see them both sprout maula pistols. He's a sneaking suspicion that they were waiting for him.

Marcus' sharp eyes see this too, not more importantly, the noose tightens as several others move in. Quietly, getting an angle, getting ready, but not trying to attract attention.

Hural comes to a similar conclusion. The area has been cleared, and those that are here, are waiting in ambush.

Marya had learned that the market area is being patrolled by a gang calling themselves Shabshub Masmum, or Poison Slipper. Highwaymen and muggers, they're strangely discrete, often unseen before they strike. She suspects immediately that these are not the thugs she was expecting.
Mar 6, 2024 6:41 am
Hural's hand goes to his own pistol. "It appears we have a fight before us," he says quietly to his companions. He scans the immediate area for the nearest and best cover.
Mar 6, 2024 11:24 am
Marya senses how deadly this situation has suddenly become, dives for cover, draws her maula pistol, trains it on the person who spoke to them, and shouts out at them:

"Back the fuck down, asshole! You have no idea who you are messing with here!"

She doesn't use The Voice - she hasn't had time to work him out - but her voice is challenging and authoritative. She hopes, at the least, that she's able to cause a distraction to help the others to do what they do best.

Marya, care to make an intimidation style roll?

Momentum: 3
Threat: 4
Mar 6, 2024 5:19 pm
Too late Rook notices the gang signs. They were the groups he avoided doing business with and therefore he had no connections to use in their favor.

"They must have known we were coming," he says, drawing his maula pistol while attempting to dive for cover.
Mar 6, 2024 6:42 pm
Marcus activates his shield and draws his sword. He looks for cover and a path to close the distance between him and one of the gang members so he can strike.

OOC:
Putting together this roll...

FOCUS
Maybe Focus: Neurolinguistics - "planting an idea in someone without their knowledge" (getting them to back down)? But I'm not trying to do this without their knowledge, I'm trying to intimidate them, which is obvious. So no Focus applies.

SKILL
Discipline "ability to exert direct, overt influence over others through presence, force of will, and the power of authority." (6)

DRIVES
Power 8 "Understanding others is the path to true power." - Power seems the right fit, but this statement isn't a good fit to the action.

So maybe Faith 4 is the best fit (as "Does the action rely upon trusting in others, an organization, or a higher power? Often useful when relying on empathy and wisdom." (p147) and this relies on trusting the actions of the rest of the team).

TRAITS
None of my traits are relevant here.

So I'm just rolling Discipline 6 Faith 4 and I'll buy one extra d20 with a point of momentum.

EDIT: I make that 3 successes?

Rolls

Discipline 6 Faith 4 Momentum 1 - (3d20)

(7104) = 21

Mar 7, 2024 12:16 am
OOC:
Works for me. With three successes, three of them will rethink their lives.
Marya's command and presence cows three of the encircling thugs. They back off, holding back as they suddenly realize they were sent to deal with a threat far greater than their pay grade. This isn't helped by the flicker of the shield generator around the sword wielder Marcus, which also escalates the threat they face. They'll hold back and see how the fray goes before committing one way or another.

Alright, you've got an ambush to deal with. Why are they attacking? Who sent them and what does that person want? These are among the many questions hovering at the edge of violence.

They're closing slowly, likely hoping you'll break and run and they can shoot you in the back. This means that if you act aggressively, you go first.

First to post is first to act. After that, initiative flits back and forth between the two sides. (Except you can spend 2 Momentum to act when it is the foes turn.)

Momentum: 2
Threat: 4
Mar 7, 2024 1:38 am
Hural doesn't waste a moment. His duty to Lady Sina burns bright in his mind and seeing the opportunity, he rushes for the nearest enemy, pulling his sword instead of his gun, and laying into the thug with his blade.
OOC:
Invoking Master-at-Arms and spending 1 momentum to increase the quality of his Long Blade for this encounter. Also invoking his Long Blade focus.
[ +- ] Master-at-Arms

Rolls

Hural Osaf: DUTY (7) BATTLE (6) - (2d20)

(18) = 9

Mar 7, 2024 8:27 pm
Sensing Hural's move, Marcus joins the rush and strikes at a foe that would shoot at Hural's exposed flank.
OOC:
Or not. :\

Rolls

DUTY (6) BATTLE (6) Applying Strategy Focus - (2d20)

(1517) = 32

Mar 7, 2024 11:17 pm
OOC:
processing Hural's attack, then a thug, then Marcus' then... we'll see.
Hural strikes the first one down, the thug's weapon flying off to the side.

His companion fires the maula at Hural's seemingly unprotected side... Hural must roll defense against this attack, two successes will negate it.

Marcus comes in, and accosts the attacker, but his own sword only pushes the man back a few paces.

For two Momentum, someone can act immediately after Marcus, otherwise the thugs act next.

Momentum: 2
Threat: 4

Rolls

defense 13 vs Hural - (2d20)

(412) = 16

attack on Hural Power+Battle 13 - (2d20)

(102) = 12

Mar 8, 2024 12:11 am
Rook fires his maula pistol at the thug that Marcus missed.
OOC:
He will use the 2 momentum to go next.

Rolls

Faith 7, Battle 7, - (2d20)

(137) = 20

Mar 8, 2024 12:23 am
The thug snaps a kick, knocking the pistol off target when Rook squeezes the trigger.

He then presses his pistol into Rook's side and squeezes his trigger.

Rook needs to make a defense roll, one success to avoid the attack.

Marya is up.

Rolls

Defense - (2d20)

(110) = 11

Attack Rook, 13 - (2d20)

(145) = 19

Mar 8, 2024 3:40 am
Rook tries to slip out from the thug's grasp while attempting to knock the pistol off target with an upward swipe of his hand. "You're getting in the way of some important people, threatening us like this. You'll be sorry," he warns.
OOC:
I'm using Power for his drive as it serves his agenda of not taking a bullet and controlling his immediate environment.

Rolls

Power 8, Battle 7 Defense - (2d20)

(916) = 25

Mar 8, 2024 4:12 am
OOC:
Defense roll - challenging Justice (he hit the enemy now their hitting back - by dodging he's going against his statement "What we do will return to us" + Battle (strategy - he's using strategy to coordinate his defense against the enemy's attack)

That should be 2 successes - but what happens from challenging his drive statement?

Rolls

Hural Osaf: JUSTICE (6) BATTLE (6) - (2d20)

(1217) = 29

Mar 8, 2024 9:58 am
Marya uses her maula pistol, shooting at the most exposed, easiest to hit of their assailants, keeping herself behind cover.
OOC:
Duty 7 Battle 5, nothing else to add to this roll.

EDIT looks like a single success to me.

Rolls

Battle 5 Duty 7 - (2d20)

(1810) = 28

Mar 9, 2024 5:03 pm
Hural partially blocks the thugs attack, but the man manages to press his advantage.
OOC:
Defeating a player characters, or a non-minor character is an extended task, with the total successes required equal to your Battle skill. He rolled two successes, Hural defended with 1, leaving one getting through. He has achieved 1/6, beginning to wear Hural down
Rook dishes out of the way of the shot fired at him.
OOC:
One success in the attack, one on the defend leaves no successes remaining, so the attack on Rook failed.
Marya fires at one of the thugs to the side, and the man just crumples around the wound.

With a couple goons down, none of you really injured, and a few intimidated out of the field, the few others are hesitating. They might press their attack but there are less of them now committed to the fight than of you.

One of the main ones stands forward and points a blade at Marcus. "You. I always wanted to fight a Swordmaster."

The others stand back to watch if Marcus accepts the one-on-one duel.

Rolls

Defense roll - (2d20)

(1411) = 25

Mar 9, 2024 9:42 pm
Sensing a chance to make up for his disappointing performance at the onset of this conflict, Marcus nods his head. "Then I shall grant you that wish."
OOC:
Applying the "Dueling" focus.

Rolls

Marcus Syn: DUTY (6) BATTLE (6) - (2d20)

(144) = 18
