Rook doesn't wait for the result of Marcus' duel and shoots at one of the hesitant spectator thugs.

Rolls

Faith 7, Battle 7, - (2d20)

(415) = 19

Mar 9, 2024 10:28 pm
OOC:
Two successes for Marcus. Rolling defense
The first attack is met with a clash of blades. The this is competent, Marcus realizes, but Marcus had the advantage of a shield.
OOC:
The Shield increases the Difficulty of attacks against him.
Marcus roll Defense please
Meanwhile, Rook doesn't bother with the protocols of dueling and fires at a random person. Not expecting the shot, it gets him in the heart and the man falls to the ground.

The other ones who was a fighter turns and runs, and the three that Marya intimidated hold up their hands as if to say they're not interested in fighting at the moment.

Rolls

Defense 13 - (2d20)

(115) = 16

Thug attack 13 - (2d20)

OOC:
Obviously keeping that Dueling focus.

Rolls

Defensive Roll: DUTY (6) BATTLE (6) - (2d20)

(517) = 22

Marcus deflects the blade, leaving the thug open for a counterattack.

Marcus' time to attack
Mar 13, 2024 2:09 am
Sensing an opening, Marcus counterattacks.
OOC:
Sorry, that should've been Dueling focus.

Rolls

DUTY (6) BATTLE (6) with Strategy Focus - (2d20)

(218) = 20

Mar 13, 2024 2:49 am
OOC:
Two successes, he defends for 1, so takes one.
The blades flash, faster and faster, and the thug takes a slash to the side.
OOC:
A natural 1 gives two successes, Marcus can roll another Defense (even one success will negate the attack, as he needs two successes to penetrate the shield with the slow blade), and then Marcus can roll his attack.

The natural 20 means a complication against the thug, which we can work out after Marcus' defense roll.

Rolls

Defense 13 - (2d20)

(165) = 21

Attack 13 D2 - (2d20)

(120) = 21

Mar 13, 2024 5:16 pm
Marcus realizes that the thug is not a mere upstart, but has some training. He has to up his game.

Rolls

DUTY (6) BATTLE (6) Dueling Focus - (2d20)

(15) = 6

Mar 13, 2024 6:10 pm
OOC:
For the others, this will be over soon, then an explanation may be forth coming. If you want to make rolls to evaluate what's happening, please do so.

Marcus scores 4 successes in defense, reducing it to 0 with two left over, and he scored a complication. 2 successes to Momentum.
Marcus' flurry of a defense disarms the thug, who finds himself unarmed and defenseless.

He waits for the killing blow, blowing hard from the effort.
Momentum: 4
Threat: 4

Marcus holds a blade to the thug's throat. "Not bad, but you lack discipline. If you would swear your loyalty to us, I'd be inclined to spare your life. But if you'd rather die, that can be arranged." Not taking his eyes off the thug, he says loud enough to the others, "Would you accept this man's loyalty, if he swore it?"
Mar 14, 2024 12:10 am
Hural watches as Marcus has the final bandit at his mercy. He scans the area and compiles the data, trying to find sense to what happened here.
OOC:
Invoking his Data Analysis focus. 4 successes, I think?

Hural Osaf: TRUTH (8) UNDERSTAND (7) - (2d20)

(112) = 13

Mar 14, 2024 1:08 am
Rook can't be sure of this man's future loyalty, but they could use more connections to further their cause. He assesses what transpired and along with Hural's analysis and Marcus' physical presence, he feels they will make the right decision.

"I'd be inclined to if we are unanimous in this decision."

Rolls

Truth (6), Understand (4) - (2d20)

(1213) = 25

To Marcus, he says, "What is loyalty if I don't know who you are? There could be more dishonor that I can bear." He seems ready to do so, if only looking for a way to claim some high ground.
[ +- ] Hural Notices
Mar 15, 2024 12:16 am
Hural steps to the man being questioned by Marcus. "You were hired by the Builder's Guild. Why? Were you given our descriptions?"
Mar 15, 2024 2:22 pm
Marya is scanning the group of bandits. She is looking to sense their emotional state, their drives, their needs, to better understand the kinds of leverage their party could use to persuade and compel the bandits to fall in with them, to be open and honest with them.
OOC:
UNDERSTAND (6) POWER (8 Understanding others is the path to true power) Focus Body Language, Trait Empath so difficulty level lowered by 1.

EDIT: I read that as a single success against difficulty -1

Qralloq says:
To Marcus, he says, "What is loyalty if I don't know who you are? There could be more dishonor that I can bear." He seems ready to do so, if only looking for a way to claim some high ground.
"And yet, despite not knowing who we are or our motives, you attacked us. Where is the honor in that?" His blade has not left the thug's throat.

Rook sees they aren't succeeding with the stubborn thug so he tries a different tactic while waiting to hear him answer Marcus' question which was more a statement than a question.

"Do you know Shadran Korr? He's a good friend of mine."
Mar 16, 2024 2:38 am
The thug's eyes leave Marcus for Rook, and he nods imperceptibly. "My life then, I swear to yours blademaster. I have no other loyalty but to you."

To Hural he says, "My- former - employer runs a clandestine spice harvester, and the operation is run out of this plaza. The Builders Guild provides cover in exchange for a cut. Your master is perilously close to disturbing that operation. A message was required to be sent. Consider it delivered."
Mar 16, 2024 5:33 am
Hural nods solemnly. "It is possible your former master and ours could perhaps come to an agreement. Name them and we will see if they may be willing to talk."
Mar 16, 2024 3:33 pm
Rook's eyebrows arch at this information, as he realizes no one has asked this thug his name. He can check with Shadran later and see what he knows about him.

"What is your name?"

Marcus withdraws his sword and takes a step back. However, he hasn't sheathed it yet, nor has he taken his eyes off of the thug. He'll need to either pick something up in the thug's body language and tone, or be given the ok from the others.
OOC:
Trying for Truth, Communicate to be sure the thug is honest. Obviously ignore if it isn't relevant.
