The Grayhaven City Gates

Grayhaven is the largest city you've ever seen, just judging by the amount of traffic passing in and out of the massive gates. There's even activity in the sky, as a flight of three hippogriffs soar past overhead. The huge barred doors are swung wide open to merchants and travelers of all types, who pass through the massive walls after careful review by the watchful city guard.

Dugal guides the caravan into a wide dirt lot off to the side of the gates, where a dozen other wagons are already being unloaded. Immediately the tumult of activity begins, voices coming from all directions. The merchants of the caravan hop down and are pressed upon by prospective porters eager to be hired to take their wares in through the gates while city officials press through the crowds to evaluate the goods and assess the appropriate tariffs. Some of the goods are destined to be sold in the Market Square, others are earmarked for delivery to parties in the city who ordered them, while still others are directed to ships bound for other ports.

As each wagon is unloaded, Gavath leads the team off to one side, into an area that Dugal has paid to be set aside for his caravan. Then the half-orc unhitches the horses and leads them off to a nearby paddock where he pays to have them guarded while rest and graze for the days that it will take for Dugal to find merchants bound for Mara. Each driver sweeps out their wagon, then gets in line at the gates, waiting for entry into the big city. Flint's job is easy enough, as Findal was a tidy passenger and there's little mess to clean. So Flint offers to help clean Belany's wagon further before he joins the line at the gates.

As the merchants finish their negotiations, they return briefly to say their goodbyes and to pay Dugal the rest of his fees.

Adran, as he waits to see just what happens and (hopefully!) be accepted into the city offers a sincere and heartfelt goodbye to each of the merchants he helped guard. When Belany comes around, he smiles and adds a thank you.

And while he may miss their company... the elf has an entire city before him. It makes Mara look like the dead-end hole in the wall that it was. The sheer size of Grayhaven is borderline overwhelming. So much potential... but he has work to do.

Elowin tries and fails not to gape in wonder at the huge city. This is what she wanted, see this, be part of this. There is even flying freaking creatures in the sky.
She bites her lip and tries to contain her giddiness.

I can't wait to see the city. Can we go now?

Your pet is much better behaved than mine. I’m still trying to get a decent image of my character that isn’t some weird duck-lipped freak.

Morik's grin, hardly ever missing in general, was in full bloom as he looked upon the city, the soaring towers, and hippogriffs in the sky. His companions seemed to be in similar awe. Morik slapped Elowin's back. "We're in the big city now, eh?"

Bram settles up his payment with Dugal. Twenty five gold suns, for a job…done.

I’m glad we’ve had the time, stout friend. I hope we can cross paths again soon, in business and in friendship.

Bidding kind goodbye to his caravaners, our fightery fellow turns his attention to his companions. Yes, friends. A big city, indeed. We have work ahead of us, yes? I have…questions of my own, perhaps our contact can help me.

Belany's lips twitch in an almost-smile as she thanks the party for rescuing her wares. She also thanks Flint for his help with her wagon, and then offers money to Findal again for the cleaning his magic provided. "No, no, no - I wouldn't dream of it!"

Swelvie blows a kiss in Turighe's direction. "Maybe I'll see you again sometime..." Turighe blushes and bows low: "It would be my pleasure." Princess frowns at the redheaded merchant's back as she sashays into the line at the gates. A wealthy noble delegation approaches with much pomp, carrying a palanquin escorted by heavily-armed guards. They stop, and the person within the palanquin address kar'Javon. The dwarf bows low and climbs into the palanquin without a word. Tesko alone has not hired any porters, and before too long, an armed cadre of heavily-armored warriors bearing crossbows arrive, escorting a team of black-clad porters. Tesko gestures, the porters heft his sealed crates, and they depart, surrounded by the warriors looking in all directions, clearly wary of attack by the Five Guys or their agents.

Findal pays the dwarven caravan master his fee and looks up at the city walls. "Exciting, isn't it?" he crows in his piping voice. Dugal turns to the party and hands 25 golden suns to each of you: Adran, Bramlin, Elowin, Gunter, Morik, and Princess. But as Princess leaves to talk with Turighe and Gunter bids his farewells, Dugal addresses the gnome: "You've been a good traveling companion, and I hope that you're happy with the services I've provided." Showing an awareness of your agreement to escort Findal, he's clearly speaking so that the four of you can also hear: "So I feel it's fair to give you a warning. As I was settling accounts with the officials, I heard some of the guards say that they're looking for gnome wizards, to take them in for questioning. I don't know why, but they've got the magecatchers out." He smiles then, the rare expression creasing his face in unaccustomed ways. "I know you can't have done anything wrong, but you might want to avoid any misunderstandings..."

Findal nods and grips Dugal's arm in gratitude too deep for words. Dugal nods. Then he looks each of you in the eye in turn and adds: "I can try to give you a few minutes more by keeping the officials busy for a bit longer. Good luck!" The dwarf hurries off and starts to loudly complain to the customs agents and his guards about how high the tariffs have become.

Findal turns to you, his protectors. "This sounds like it will be more work than I thought. If they're looking for me, that may mean that someone has learned about the artifact and Tykus' research. It'll be best to avoid attention until we can enter the city, meet Tykus, and figure out what's happened."

There is a big line of people waiting to get in, but the guards seem to be letting people through with only cursory questions. As you watch, Gunter is let through the checkpoint and enters the city. Princess, who never accepted Findal's offer of employment either, is busy flirting with Turighe (and has made noises that she might sign up to guard the caravan on the return journey).

How do you want to get Findal into Grayhaven?
OOC:
Note: despite the name, the "magecatchers" in question are just guards who are trained for combatting/capturing wizards, not ones who are good at hunting or finding magic users.

each get 25gp for the job, how much did the goblin coins net us each? I'm not sure how it was split
Goblin coins
32 gold krugerrands
2300 copper ~ 23 gold
= 55 gold krugerrands
Divided by 4? (13g 7s 5c each) or 6 (9g 1s 6c)
Perhaps we could find a teller, a bank or merchant, that could exchange all these coins into something more transportable

"Could you not discard or secret away anything that might identify you as a magic user, and when they ask if you do magic simply tell them "no?""

Adran's suggestion is simple and straightforward... but deception often is. The question is, would it work?

There could be trouble with the guards? Lunea prepare me!
It sounded like an expletive, but there was power in that Vigilant Blessing
I have a spell that can ward a person from enemies' gazes. But I rather avoid any problems. Just saying that I have options.

Morik looked over and Findal. "Can you actually do magic? If you can, why didn’t you help out with them bandits?" He crossed his arms, unimpressed. "Can you cast a spell to disguise yourself?"

The money will have been divided before you arrive at Grayhaven. Each PC could then look for a way to make their wealth more portable if they wish.

But regarding the division...Surely it would divide by 5 or 6, not 4, since Gunter was with you and Princess was not - it's really on the group as to whether you cut Princess in (divide by 6) or not (divide by 5). But Gunter would insist on his share.

Dividing by 5 would net each PC 6 krugerrands and 460 bits, with 2 krugerrands left over. Any of the merchants could "break" those 2 krugerrands into 20 argents if none of the PCs can, and that would mean 4 argents per PC.

It's up to you to decide whether you want to have included Princess or not, but you should figure that out before continuing.

I say no to Princess, unless a new player is taking her over as a PC.

Findal
Findal spreads his hands helplessly at Morik's accusation. "I am, at heart, a peaceful gnome, and my extensive studies of magic have not included learning spells that harm. I do not claim to be a hero, nor do I aspire to be more than a scholar. I hope you don't think the worse of me for it." He grins lopsidedly. "If I was able to protect myself, I might not have hired all of you!"

He nods at Elowin. "And I appreciate the impressive magic that you have at your fingertips, ready to aid me in battle. Let us hope it doesn't come to that!" Pointing to Adran, he adds: "We might be able to avoid conflict through simple deception, as you suggest." Findal tucks his book into his bag along with his hat, tousles his hair and slings the bag over his shoulder like a sack. He's still clearly a gnome, but now he looks a bit like a well-dressed-but-bedraggled gnome porter, or maybe a teeny gnome merchant who couldn't afford a porter carrying his own wares into the city.

Unless you have something else you'd like to try (to use a different skill or ability) or want to do something to add to the gnome's disguise (to gain ADV), we'll proceed with Adran's plan of deceiving the guards.

If we're ready, which one of you will go ahead of Findal and roll the Deception check?
OOC:
Hearing nothing further, let's say the guards who participated in the final fight divided the money 5 ways. So Adran, Bramlin, Elowin, Gunter, and Morik each have 6 krugerrands, 4 argents, and 460 bits in addition to the 25 krugerrands you just received from Dugal.

Adran will shake his head and take Findal's bag. "Let me carry this," he says quietly. "As an artificer, having books of magic and magic-adjacent information would not seem out of place. I know many of us dabble in mysticism in its various forms, but I feel book learning is more believably my area."
Mar 28, 2024 7:58 am
Morik continued to glare at Findal for a moment longer, then guffawed and slapped Findal’s back. "I just had ta make sure you weren’t holding out on us and could disguise yourself. Adran’s got a great plan. Let’s give it a try!"

The party gets in line with the gnome. Up ahead, several guards are stopping people as they enter the gates. You see that the guards wear livery emblazoned with the symbol of a fortified harbor and rampant goat, which you all now recognize as the insignia of the Duke of Grayhaven. It's carved into the lid of the sealed mahogany box that Adran still carries. They peer at each group, ask them a question or two, and then let them into the city. But then, about ten people ahead of the heroes, the guards suddenly lower their spears, cornering a gnome who gives a little shriek and looks in vain for a way to escape. One of the guards grabs him and leads him off to one side, into a little guardhouse inside the gates. They are accompanied by one of the magecatchers, ready to leap into motion should the gnome attempt anything that resembles casting.

Findal
Findal Dinfizzle Findazzle smiles nervously and mutters to Morik: "He was by himself. Obviously a wizard, too! We've got each other, we'll be fine."

You have just a few moments before the guards turn to your group. Who will roll the CHR Deception check to get past the guards? Adran's carrying of Findal's bag has reduced the DC to 11.
