Chapter One: Bones and Ashes

Abstalar Zantus
Only a week after the harrowing events in the seaside caves, you receive a letter from Father Zantus, asking that you meet him at the church for lunch. When you arrive, you are met by Acolyte Jamison, who leads you through the cathedral to the interior veranda where Abstalar Zantus waits at a table laden with food. The veranda looks out to the south over the cathedral’s grassy central courtyard, wherein a set of seven 9-foot-tall menhirs loom around a circular altar stone.

When you enter, he stands up and greets you warmly, "Ah yes, I'm so glad that you were all able to make it!" he says with a wide and sincere smile, "Please, sit down and enjoy the food and fine weather with me. How have you all been? I heard about your escapades in the cave. Quite the name you are all making for yourselves! I've always known you four would do well, ever since you were children exploring the old Valdemar manor house."

"Ah, yes!" Jathus says without requiring further encouragement. He sits at the table, purring slightly. "This looks wonderful, Father. And yes, our reputation seems to be growing a bit! My friends and I, we have always had a bit of an eye for danger, have we not?" He licks his lips, but holds back from starting his meal until everyone has sat - it would be rude to do otherwise, of course.

Winona gives Abstalar a hug. He's basically been her father since she arrived in Sandpoint and announced that she had come to live in the Cathedral. As an adult she's seen less and less of him.

She smiles, her own headlong rushing into danger is a penchant that she's finding harder and harder to resist, and Abstalar would blanch at how she imagined her life going.

"This does look wonderful. I hope that our reputation had some good to it as well."

It's clear Zan has been experimenting with her new magics as it's two ferrets that run up to the cathedral. Only after confusing some of those around does one suddenly turn into the gnome, with Socks rapidly climbing up her shoulder to take his rightful place curled around her neck.

Socks doesn't have the restraint of Jathus, and the second Zan sits he's jumping on the table, going for some particularly nice looking fruit..only to get scooped up by the gnome befoe he can grab anything. Patience Scoks.' The reprimand just draws grumblings as Zan turns to the Father.

'Its been good . Oh have I shown you my knew rick yet? Caught those squatters right off guard!. '

Perf sits down as well. "Ah yes, the Valdemar Manor. You could say that's where I - WE met our destinies." Perf gazes at his gauntleted hand with a mixed expression on his face. He then waves it and small food portions begin to float over to his plate.

"Thank you for acknowledging our party as more than a town nuisance since the event with that necromancer. You must realize that merely inviting us here brings legitimacy to our position." Perf meets Abstalar's eyes as he takes a sip of what turns out to be wine that Perf has no experience with. He splutters for a bit, drinks some water, and continues on as if nothing happened. "What would you like from us?

"A fair question," Jathus says, "Surely you didn't invite us for merely the presence of our company, though Jathus would understand we're it so. Is there something we might assist with?"

Father Zantus returns Winona's hug, "I'm glad you came. I haven't seen you in a while and it doesn't feel the same without you under foot all the time," he says, a fond smile on his face.

He laughs at the Socks' antics and reaches out to pet the creature's soft fur if it allows him to, "That's a cute little addition to your party."

When he's asked about the reason for the invitation, he shakes his head, "Let us enjoy the food and company before we turn to more serious matters," he suggests, getting some mutton for himself as well.

You chat amicably with the priest for the duration of the meal until the last of the plates is taken by another acolyte, leaving you all alone with Father Zantus. He lets out a heavy sigh before speaking, "How much do you know of the events of seventeen years ago and the treatment that Nualia received in this very town leading up to those events?"

Some of you may be aware of the events of 17 years ago, in which Nualia, an aasimar woman who was raised by the previous head priest tried to destroy the town by recruiting several tribes of goblins to do her dirty work.

She had been treated badly by the villagers, even when she was a child: some treated her with reverence while others, particularly children, treated her cruelly and played tricks on her. Eventually, after falling in love and getting pregnant, she was abandoned by her lover and imprisoned by her adopted father. She eventually broke out, torching the church with her father inside before leaving town. She returned years later and tried to have the town destroyed, but a group of heroes stopped her plot, killing her in the process.

"I know only bits and pieces. She was angry with the town, right? Tried to destroy it, enlisting goblins to aid her?" Jathus shakes his head, "Terrible thing. It was good we had people in the town to stand up to her."

"I'm glad you have some familiarity with the tale. It means I won't have to go into all of the details," Father Zantus says, nodding sadly, "Over the past seventeen years, I’ve done much thinking on poor Nualia, as she didn’t deserve the fate she got. I’m certainly not justifying her actions, but I wish it never came to that sort of situation in the first place. That I only came to town after the fire that took my predecessor’s life is no excuse—all of those who worship Desna should know better and treat the children of the world more kindly. My predecessor’s failure to be a father figure is in part what caused Nualia’s fall, but the people of Sandpoint were no help in how they treated her as something less than human—something fit only to soften their own fears, or something to jealously covet.

After her defeat, the least I could do was see to it that she got a proper burial here in town. Some folks blanched at the idea, but I’m glad that most of us were more understanding and forgiving. Only, I feel like it’s not enough. Nualia needs to know we’ve forgiven her... she needs to know that I have forgiven her. She doesn’t deserve an afterlife of torment—her life was torment enough."


He pauses here, looking at each of you in turn to gauge your reaction to what he's said so far. It's clear he has more to say, but he wants to ensure that you are a receptive audience.

Winona shirts through her complicated feelings on this. On one hand, everything he says comes from a place of compassion. But bargaining with spirits seems like crossing a line.

"Raising the dead, even just their shades, to assuage your guilt is a mixed bag, father. I understand your heart is in the right place, believe me. Whatever you're asking, we'll listen, but I'm uncomfortable if this plan involves is summoning her spirit, or worse. I'd be a terrible champion of Gozreh if I didn't place firm boundaries around anything to do with the undead."

Jathus sits back and puts his feet up on the table. "Well, if it's a good prayer you want, Father Zantus, I'm sure I could rustle up a few words to the woman's memory. If you have something else in mind, I must ask how you might otherwise think we could offer such forgiveness to someone long dead."

Perf went very still and quiet when Abstalar brought up that night. After all, he was a toddler when his parents came to this town just a few days prior to that fateful night; the events of which landed him in the orphanage.

In a strange voice his friends know to be Perf when he's being serious he replies.

"...I know what it's like to be shunned by the villagers. To be beaten, robbed, or starving in a place you're told is the safest for you. I can imagine events of her life that lead her to do the things she did.

I don't condone what she did either. After all, she caused the circumstances of my parents' deaths. I also don't wish her eternal torment. I'm more inclined to let this be. No offense to Gozreh, Winnona, but I'm not even against necromancy on the principle of it. It's just if what she did was her seeking vengeance of a sort that I can understand, then believe me when I say I feel she isn't in eternal torment right now."


Perf adopts his usual grin and adds, "Jathus, I thought you were supposed to be a Puss in boots but with your feet up here you're-a boots in peas."

Father Zantus looks positively alarmed, "Oh no, you misunderstand," he says, shaking his head, "We shan't be resurrecting her. A simple spell to speak to the dead shall suffice for our purposes."

"I’ve only spoken of this with one other—a friend named Audrahni. Nualia’s been dead for nearly two decades, but time does not pass the same for the dead as it does for the living. Audrahni knows a ritual that can put us in contact with the spirits of the dead and, in her latest letter, she told me she’s willing to perform this ritual here when next she visits, so that I can offer Nualia my apologies and forgive her. I don’t know if that will be enough to help her, or to stave off an afterlife of torment, but I do know that if nothing is done, Sandpoint will have failed her yet again."

"Here’s where the complication comes in. In order for Audrahni’s ritual to succeed, we need a physical link to Nualia’s soul. It’s been years, and any of her belongings are long gone now, which leaves only her mortal remains. As loath as I was to exhume her body, it was necessary to the ritual, to giving her my forgiveness. But when we opened her grave, we made an awful discovery. Her coffin was empty—tunneled into from below, so that when we reached it, the whole grave caved in. Naffer and I were fortunate enough to escape without much harm, but now there’s a hole where her grave used to be—a hole that leads to an underground tunnel below the boneyard."

"Well, this just gets even more curious," Jathus says, taking his feet down. "I suppose this is where we come in - we're scrawny and know how to scrap, so send us in down there to see if we can find any part of her remains, yes? Was there any hint as to how old that tunnel is - I find myself wondering, was Nualia taken 15 years ago, or 15 days ago."

Winona find the notion of speaking with the dead a close cousin to necromancy, but her affection for the man forces her to try and see it his way.

"Ah, well, examining strange tunnels is our specialty. Do you know what she was buried in? Perhaps we might recognize pieces of her shroud and know which way to go if the tunnel branches."

I was beginning to wonder why we were hear for a speak with dead. Zan looks to Winona 'Looks like someone else may have had thoughts or resurrecting her? What other use would someone else have for her body. Well her body specifically oh did you check the other graves? Was it just her body that was gone? ' It sounded so if her caved in from the tunnel, but always best to check.

Perf perks up at this news. He's studied several spells with the sole purpose of one day delving into the Thassilonian dungeon that was uncovered.

"That's more like it. As for speaking with the dead I'm more on board with that. It'll allow her the opportunity to share her reasons. That said, what, exactly, are you proposing with this endeavor? Just find her body, or fully explore this tunnel system?"

Father Zantus nods to Jathus, "That's right," he agrees, "I could have asked the sheriff and his men for help, but I don't think they are as resourceful as you all are. With all you've been through, I thought you would be better suited to this specific endeavor."

Winona knows that most faiths don't have the same view as she does regarding speaking to the dead, so this isn't something that would likely be proscribed by most priests, despite how distasteful she may find it, "She was buried in a white funeral shroud with Desna's butterfly sewn into it."

"The subsidence, the claw marks on the underside of the coffin, the missing body, and the tunnel it opens into all suggest ghouls to me. They must have burrowed up from below to rob her grave," he explains further, giving you each a significant look, "Be careful... They are dangerous creatures."

To Zanitina, "It's likely that more have been taken, but we wouldn't be able to know for sure without digging up more graves, unfortunately."

"The monsters have been a problem in the region for decades, although not so much in recent years. I suppose I grew a bit complacent, but at the same time, they know how to hide and avoid leaving traces. By not tunneling in areas of the graveyard that are in more frequent use, and by backfilling those they defile, ghouls can go unnoticed for ages. Had I waited a few weeks more, no doubt they would have backfilled Nualia’s grave as well, leaving me with a mysterious empty coffin but nowhere obvious to go from there, but that says to me that the theft’s recent enough that her remains might still be recoverable."

Looking to Perf, he looks thoughtful, "The first priority is to bring back her remains, but exploring the tunnels is important as well. I would say bring Nualia's remains back first and then you can explore further to see if this threat can be dealt with."

Winona shivers. The thought of these abominations defiling the dead, consuming the corpses, leaves her light headed.

"Yes, we should prepare and leave in the morning. I'll pray to Gozreh for the strength to end this threat. "

Jathus politely excuses himself and makes sure, again, his invitation to join him at the Rusty Dragon stands. He promptly heads over to get piss-drunk and carouse with the locals, telling all manner of stories - some true, some not. The earlier he starts, he guesses, the sooner he'll pass out and the better off he'll be in the morning. That's how it works, right?

As you know I've been running my fortune-telling business when I can and I've recently learned how to apply fortune with a ritual. If each of you could provide me with an hour of your time tonight I hope to supply you with a modicum of luck in our endeavors tomorrow."

The harrow reading ritual no longer costs me anything to do other than time now Perf is level 4. It also lowered the DC. If you would like your character to participate you just need to provide an in-character goal to achieve for this ritual, such as "eradicate the ghouls feasting on the loved ones of this village" or "locate the shroud of what's-her-face".

Zan seemes to consider Jathus proposal. t was rare she stayed the night is town nowadays, and had been a while since she had spent time in a tavern.. a little bit of fun wouldn't hurt and a tavern bed or the ones her parents kept for her would mean she is nearby for tomorrow. Unless Bethana had changed her stance on the druid sleeping in the bushes from last time.

At the mention of the ritual she pauses following Jathus out. 'Thats sounds fun. I can take part, yes!'

Jathus, already standing and ready to head to the door. Looks plainly at Perf for several moments. "I will do this thing, for you my friend. Tell me where and I'll meet you for this ritual." Then he'd see how many drinks he could get in before the indicated time.

Jathus sits with Perf in a more secluded area reserved for clients of his fortune telling. Jathus may notice that the deck Perf is using for the ritual is far more ornate than the usual deck he's seen Perf fidget-shuffle before. Perf spends the first part of the ritual meditating with Jathus who has his goal in mind and drawing occult themed symbols in strategic places. After it is complete Perf speaks at last.

"Jathus, as you know, this power sealed in my gauntlet needs an outlet. One way I've found to safely allow this is to use fortune telling to let it have a hand, as it were, in fate. I shall now read yours."

Perf lays the cards out and gives his spiel about each in turn, then finally he draws the last card for this reading that ties it all together.

"Ah, 7 of books. This reading will effect something you do in relation to your wits. For weal or woe, let it be so."

That 19 I rolled was the DC necessary to succeed this ritual. This is the pertinent information:

The target gains agency over fate and chance while in the pursuit of their goal, gaining a "wild card." At any point during harrowing's duration of 1 month, the creature can expend this wild card to immediately reroll any associated check they just made. They must use the second result. Once this reroll is taken and the wild card is spent, the harrowing ritual's effects end.

Jathus rolled a 4 which means you can use this wild card to reroll a single skill check (Any skill, not just intelligence based) that had to do with his goal of destroying the creatures that took the shroud.

For Winona's reading it goes largely the same except for the lynchpin card.

The following morning, you make your way to the cemetery to begin your grim task. Zantus and Naffer, the priest in charge of upkeep of the graveyard, lead you to the grave, which is kept away from most of the others and show you the hold leading down. Securing a rope above, you make your way down into the darkness of the tunnels below.

The open grave leads to a cramped, four-foot-tall tunnel dug through hard-packed earth and clay. The walls are supported by bracing made of wood that appears to have been scavenged from coffins, driftwood, and shipwreck salvage. Faint smudges and scrapes track through the dirt, leading south.

As you move southward, you hear a voice from within the next chamber. It's high pitched and somewhat raspy and, though it's hard to understand specifics, you are pretty sure it's speaking in the goblin tongue.

Perf listens carefully, but the words are quiet. From what he can gather, they are complaining of their hunger and one says that they should demand that Glorkus let them go into town to "catch some dinner". The others quickly shush that one and continue to grumble quietly amongst themselves.

Jathus remains alert. "Well? What are they saying, Perf?" Once relayed to him, Jathus adds, "Now is, I think, the time to be sneaky, no?" He hunches down and moves ahead of the other, trying to avoid notice.

Jathus creeps forward to peer into the next chamber. Wooden timbers are spaced evenly throughout this six-foot-high room, supporting a network of beams above to give the cave-like chamber support. The walls and floor bear evidence of having been dug out of the clay and soil by clawed hands. Several large, flat boulders have been left in place protruding from the floor to serve as tables—tables strewn with gnawed bones. Additional stacks of soggy, stained lumber lie in alcoves to the northeast. The smell of earth mixed with decay lingers in the air.

Sitting around the boulder-tables, are six goblins with partially rotted flesh, sunken eyes, and clawed hands. Ghouls.

Once Jathus reports back to the party Perf uses Tremor Signs cantrip to indicate he's ready and able to lay down a Mud Pit in the area as before when fighting zombies. This may be better for ranged divide and conquer.

As your characters would know they can reply with Tremor Signs or simply thumbs up or down. I established this mode of communication in the CYOA creation steps. Just give assent or decline Perf kicking this thing off with an area of difficult terrain we can probably keep shoving them into and limit their actions.

With Jathus deferring to Winona and Winona approving of Perf using the Mudpit plan he gets into position and casts it in such a way that the party can still move down the East sides of the cavern unimpeded while trying to catch as many of the 6 ghouls within the 15 foot burst as possible.

Zani rushes forward to engage them, seamlessly transforming into a bear mid-stride.

Perf sends blades of wind slicing out, cutting two of the ghouls to shreds and dropping them to the stone floor.

Winona moves in a more measured way, stabbing out with her trident and scoring a minor hit against the north-most ghoul.

The ghouls fearlessly move to engage, tongues hanging from their mouths and dripping with saliva.

G4: The ghoul that Winona just struck lashes out, scoring a hit with one of its filthy claws. She can feel her body slowing as the ghouls insidious poison rushes through her bloodstream.

Jathus slinks forth from the shadows with a wicked grin on his face, spinning his kukri in his hand with practiced ease. "Ah, do not fear, Zani, for Jathus has your back!" He flips the kukri end over end and takes a quick swipe at the ghoul before him.

Perf's wind blades cut into two of the ghouls, but then stay on their feet, their hunger overwhelming them.

Zani's claws dig into ghoul 6, taking some large chunks out of it.

Winona feels her body stiffen up as the ghoul poison courses through her veins.

Jathus moves in, taking a swipe at ghoul 6 and cutting its head clean off, the keen blade of his kukri meeting very little resistance.

The two remaining ghouls, with the tide clearly turning against them, run away, calling out "Glorkus!

The goblin ghouls don't seem to have any possessions except for the rotted clothing that they are wearing. One of them fled northwest while the other fled southwest.

Jathus, during his search of the chamber, finds a well-hidden door in the southeastern corner, which opens to a tunnel leading eastward.

You move carefully through the tunnels to the southeast and it quickly becomes clear that this path isn't likely going to lead around behind the goblin ghouls you fought before or this Glorkus character. You can smell the scent of death surrounding you and it's only getting stronger. After a few minutes of walking, you hear footsteps approaching.

Suddenly from around the next turn in the tunnel, a ghoul steps out and holds out his hands in a diplomatic gesture, "Please, stay back," he says in a hissing rasp, "I know my scent can be a bit... overwhelming to the unprepared. Why have you come to our warrens?"

He hesitates, "Please, do not tell those on the surface of our presence. We do not harm the living and only feast upon corpses. We like our home and would rather not be forced to leave to a less hospitable area."

"This is a disappointing outcome. You do realize how easily we could kill you right now?" he asks, but does not seem inclined to order an attack at this very moment.

Perf stifles a laugh that he couldn't quite catch at the look on Winona's face. Sometimes that's just how it Goz, reh? In Necril Perf will apologize for his comrades decorum in their domain. Then back to the common tongue, Come on Winona, there are feral undead goblins to put down. Let's return the way we've come for both parties here to be better off for it. So saying he puts a hand on her shoulder and nudges her slightly to follow him through the line of ghouls that appeared knowing that this is a show of force rather than a gauntlet to overcome.

Wolgur smiles, showing a large number of sharp teeth and an unnaturally long tongue, "We have no intention of killing you," he says with a laugh, "Nor do we have any intention of staying around now that your companions intolerance is known to us."

He lets that sink in before continuing, "We merely ask for two days to pack our things and go," he says, then looks at Winona, "I want you to remember our mercy here. We could have killed you here. You have invaded our territory and threatened us, so we would be within our rights as far as I am concerned. Tell me... which of us is really the monster here?"

With that, he waves his hand and the ghouls disperse, disappearing into the secret tunnel and around the corner. He gives you one more look before he too disappears from sight.

Winona feels squeamish, the sudden proximity to violence and steep odds, but it has worked out well.

With death at the ghouls' hands being avoided for now, you make your way back along the south wall to see where the two ghouls that escaped went. Jathus goes ahead slightly to see what he can spot around the corner.

A large flat-topped boulder protrudes from the floor in the southwest corner of this roughly circular room, its sides smeared with symbols drawn in blood, and its top supporting a large bundle wrapped in a filthy shroud. Three exits lead from the chamber, but unlike those to the northeast and south, the one to the northwest has been barricaded mostly shut with timbers and slabs of driftwood.

In the center of the room you can see the two ghouls that escaped whispering to one in similar clothing, but with a wand in his hand and bones sewn into the fabric. This is likely Glorkus.

Perf takes a look and notices that they don't appear to notice us yet. Perf suggests that Glorkus is probably the caster variant that he can open the salvo on by casting Laughing Fit on Glorkus. Perf listens to the goblin-ghouls for a other tidbits of information before doing anything and then after casting will bow like a butler to Winona to sally forth upon this great evil.

Anyone trying to be sneaky needs to roll stealth for initiative. Everyone else rolls Perception as normal.

Stealth for initiative is sort of funny in the way that it works. Basically your roll gets compared to both their roll AND their perception DC.

• If you beat both, they have no clue anything is going on and you can act first
• If you beat only their perception DC but lose against their check, then they know something is around and get to act before you with that knowledge
• If you only beat their roll, but not their perception DC, you get to act, but they know where you are
• If you beat neither, they can act first with the knowledge of where you are

Zani rushes in as a bear to begin fighting their foes.

Jathus rushes in, his kukri missing by mere inches! The ghoul has to throw its midsection out of the way very awkwardly to avoid the blow.

The ghouls are eager for the fight, biting, clawing, and screaming wildly in their attempt to get some tasty flesh. Zani's thick fur prevents the ghoul claws from finding a hold, but Jathus isn't so lucky, catching a claw in the gut.

Perf, pushing through his disgust at the smell, casts his spell. Blades of air blast from his outstretched hand, each missing their target by inches.

Winona emits a blast of healing energy, revitalizing her comrades and burning the flesh of the ghouls.
2 to Glorkus, 5 to G1, 10 to G2

Zani's bear form moves around the edge of the room, swiping and biting at one of the ghouls. The little creature manages to throw itself out of the way just a moment before the large bear's jaws close around it.

Jathus agilely tumbles past the ghoul before him, coming to his feet with a flourish. His kukri slashes through the ghouls spine, dropping it to the ground.

The remaining ghouls seem unperturbed by the loss of their comrade, their bloodlust overtaking them.

G1 scrambles atop the table to get a more advantageous position against Zani, attempting to bite and claw her as best it can through the thick bear fur. It can't get a good angle on her and fails to deal any real damage.

Glorkus, with Zani vulnerable, drops the spellcasting pretenses and attempt to take a chunk out of her. Both tooth and claw find a hold in the druid, eliciting a roar of pain.

Zani manages to catch Glorkus with a single claw attack before shifting away from her terribly vulnerable position.

Winona, holding defensively, stabs out once and then again with her trident. The first attack lands, drawing an annoyed and high-pitched grunt, but Glorkus manages to barely avoid the second.

Jathus' blade barely grazes Glorkus, leaving only a small cut behind.

Perf retches in order to feel better and stands taller as he maintains his spell.

The remaining normal ghoul moves to flank Jathus, biting and clawing as he moves into position. Jathus keeps his wits about him and deftly dodges the attacks.

Glorkus, still laughing hysterically, manages to land two solid hits on Jathus as he works in concert with the other ghoul.

Jathus takes the blow from Glorkus as well as he's able, then flips around and attempts to slide past the ghoul that was behind him. As he returns to his feet, he brings his weapon around and strikes at the creature!

Perf sends out blades of pure air at his foes. Glorkus takes one across the chest, causing pus to spurt across the floor. The scent is awful, but you've all grown used to it by now.

Winona's trident catches the ghoulish priest in the gut, a brutal follow-up to Perf's spell.

Jathus nimbly rolls past the gob-ghoul, coming to his feet and slashing it across the back of the neck as he regains his feet. The attack is swift and it takes a moment for the ghouls head to fall away from its body.

Winona launches a flurry of attacks, bear teeth and claws coming from all angles, overpowering the small creature with ease.
OOC:
We'll call the fight here. Glorkus only has 12 HP anyway. Whoever gets to it first can decide how this ends!

Perf finishes Glorkus off by using Needle Darts cantrip causing splinters of his Gauntlet of Power to fly out and impale Glorkus' brain and lungs. Seeing the deed done Perf drops his sustained spell uses that action to congratulate the efforts of the party that got us here.

You don't have to go far to find Nualia's remains now that you are no longer distracted by the ghouls. The wrapped bundle sitting atop the impromptu altar contains Nualia’s disarticulated skeleton, readily identifiable by its left arm: the bones are black and the hand appears as a large talon.

"I can not lay her spirit to rest without rest myself, but I'll carry her out of here." With a way eye at the surrounding cave walks as if expecting undead to pour forth, she focuses on the body.

"Your soul escaped beyond the stars, your life has begun anew, your former body is cared for in memory of all those you touched in that life."

She carefully wraps up the remains in the bundle and tucks it against her side under her shield arm.

"I suppose you are right, though - probably far fewer ghouls in places that burn their dead." Perf considers this and states the following before deciding to excuse himself for the night. It seems to me then that if that's the cultural norm for good reason the ghouls aren't doing anything wrong. The bodies buried will be eaten by bugs and other such pests given enough time. The problem then with ghouls is that they don't wait for their meal to be forgotten by us. I see them as part of our cycle on this plane.

You begin tearing down the barricade, revealing a chamber beyond. The walls of this cave and its timber supports bear scorch marks, while the charred bodies of three goblins lie sprawled on the floor. To the west, a partially dug out alcove has revealed a flagstone wall with a narrow crack that opens into another chamber, within which a faint fiery radiance flickers.

Before you can tear it down too much, a burned goblin face peers through the timbers at you, "Stop! Stop! You’ll angry up the fire monster!" he whispers to you. This is clearly one of the goblin ghouls, but he looks more terrified than threatening at this point.

Moving up, you peer through a crack in the wall. A fire burns within a seven-pointed star carved in the ceiling, casting light that fills the area with a flickering radiance. Two wooden doors sit in the southwest corner of the room, while to the east, a low stone altar made of marble sits before a crack in the wall. The top of the altar holds a silver bowl with a slender-bladed knife balanced atop the bowl’s rim, its point aimed toward the west.

A goat-headed demon with glowing red eyes and flaming hooves stands in the center of the room. Measuring only about 4 feet in height, it turns to glare at you, speaking several words in Abyssal, "Leave now unless you are here with instructions from Abraxas about the Flume's secret!". Winona understands only a single word: Abraxas, the name of a demon lord. She also recognizes the creature as a Brimorak, a fire demon born from the soul of an arsonist.

Perf's blessing lends accuracy to your strikes as he steps forward into a support role.

Jathus curls his lip at the sight of the foul air filling the small room, shaking his head slightly. "Bravery is for fools, yes? So be it, Jathus will be foolish today! And you, how will it feel to be felled by a fool?" He strides into the room while spinning his kukri, trying to hold back the putrid odor from overtaking him.

He shrugs off the stench and swings at the creature with his weapon.

Perf's spell doesn't seem to physically harm the brimorak, but it still screams as the water washes over it. It seems to have some sort of mental aversion to water. He thinks more carefully about the Brimorak and remembers that they are profoundly weak to cold effects!

Winona casts a healing spell upon herself. Her wounds begin to knit as Gozreh's favor washes over her battered form.

Jathus darts in, taunting the creature as he moves confidently across the stone floor. His blade slices the creature across the arm, spattering him with its hot blood.

The demon grins and points a finger at the ground, dropping a ball of fire at its feet. The blast is deafening in the enclosed room, flames washing over you all, scorching skin, hair, and clothing as the brimorak laughs.

Jathus, even as his fur and skin singe from the hot blood of the demon, manages to dance out of the way of a majority of the flames.

"Win!" Jathus shouts as his friend goes down. He growls at the thing before him, "I am Jathus, know my name. You have hurt my friend, now prepare to die!" He attempts to throw the demon off by tumbling around its feet, then back to strike from a different angle.

Perf casts a spell to try to disable the brimorak, but it shrugs it off for the most part, only lightly chuckling occasionally. He then follows up with a spell, launching his gauntlet across the room, but it bounces off the demon's thick hide.

Jathus rolls around the brimorak, slashing with his kukri, cutting a chunk out of its leg as he passes by, but is sprayed with boiling blood as he does so.

Zani casts a spell of healing upon Winona's prone form, bringing her back to consciousness. Twirling her staff, she launches a powerful strike at the demon, smacking it in the side of the head.

Winona staggers to her feet, setting her shield in front of her in defiance.

The brimorak makes a disgusting sound in its throat and then spews boiling vomit onto Jathus and Zani. The vomit burns their flesh and compromises their footing, causing them both to fall to the ground. The brimorak raises its sword and slashes at Zani, cutting deeply into her.

With the smoke clearing and the creature dead, you have a chance to investigate the room. The silver bowl on the altar is worth 5 gp. The knife sitting on top of it is a low-grade cold iron dagger with the rune of Abraxas etched on the blade. Within the bowl are six smooth garnet beads, one worth 2 gp, two worth 5 gp, and three worth 10 gp.

Listening at both doors, you hear nothing from either.

The room to the south appears to be an ancient cloak room. Most of the robes have long since decayed, but a green and orange cloak bearing the symbols of Abraxas has survived the ravages of time.

Opening the door to the west:
The north and west walls of this chamber are carved with hundreds of runes, all radiating out from a seven-pointed star with a flickering flame burning at its center. Now and then, a little sputter of sparks showers out of these flames. This side of the door you came from has been adorned with a single rune carving that looks vaguely like a horned, fanged face.

The hallway continues south and west from here, lined by a series of wooden doors.

Just to speed things along :)
Thick layers of ash cover mostly empty weapon racks in this room, although an old sword and a small stack of arrows sit on a shelf in the southeast corner. A single seven-pointed star is carved in the ceiling. At its center flickers a strange blue fire that periodically trails what appear to be snowflakes that melt away to nothingness before they reach the floor. What appears to be a scorch mark radiates from under the door to the south, as if a great explosion sometime long ago burst in the room beyond.

Perf recognizes the symbol as the Sihedron Rune, a symbol often used in old Thassilon to represent the seven virtues (or the seven sins).

Jathus cautiously enters. As he does, the blue flame flashes more brightly and the room grows cold before the fire sputters and fizzles out. It seems that whatever the trap was supposed to do (likely freezing intruders) has failed.

Now that the danger has passed, you have a chance to look around. You find a cold iron longsword, six beacon shot arrows, and single storm arrow.

The walls, floor, and ceiling of this long, pitch-dark hall are blasted black with soot, and a fine layer of ash covers the floor. Scattered here and there are heaps of ash from which a few fragments of bone protrude. The tunnel heads further to the west into darkness. A single door sits in its frame on the west wall before the hallway.

He busies himself taking what he can from the room - he's unsure of what might have value, but the way these arrows and the sword are presented, he hopes it's more than nominal.

If the others agree, he heads back to the prior hallway and checks the next door there.

Jathus moves inside, looking over the map to try and makes sense of what it represents. He then checks inside and around the desk, looking for anything of use or interest before checking the door to the south. He opens it if he feels it is safe to do so.

Most of what's on the table crumbles and breaks apart upon contact. The map is in better condition, though and seems to show the surrounding area, but all of the writing on the map is in Thassilonian, which Perf can help with translating.

The coastline on the map is labeled as "The Rasp" and the location where Sandpoint now sits is "HF Compound". Instead of the goblin-inhabited island of Thistletop to the east of Sandpoint, there appears to be a large statue on the map. There are also several locations of possible hidden bases marked and the area where the Pit* is has been circled with a note reading "Captured spies whisper of a sizable Shalast cohort stationed here, led by someone named Liralarue—must secure authorization from Mistress for a raid."

The Pit is where the Sandpoint Devil is rumored to be located and is a very dangerous place atop the Devil's Platter, a large plateau SE of Sandpoint
A small closet in the Southeastern corner is mostly empty, but contains a keyring with two keys: one is a sneaky key talisman and the other is an iron key. You also find a fragile scroll detailing the workings of something called "The Three Steps" which appears to be a trap located in the compound here somewhere.

Jathus reads over the text detailing the trap after pocketing the key. He shrugs and affixes the talisman to his armor, then hands the trap information to the others - "We'll need to keep an eye out for this, if these notes are right, it could be quite dangerous."

He turns to Perf, "What do you make of this map, my friend? It appears as old as the other things in this room, which crumble upon touch...and the locations are both familiar but different. I would venture to guess the complex we've found ourselves in must predate Sandpoint itself, yes?"

I would agree, Jathus. Sandpoint isn't terribly old to begin with, but this is written in Thassilonian; a truly ancient tongue pertinent to why Sandpoint was founded in the first place. This may be the biggest find to date and something we must follow up on.

Jathus moves north to the next door in line. This room’s southern portion is lower than the rest of the chamber, with a set of steps leading up to the room itself. A carving of a seven-pointed star, a flame flickering at its center, adorns the walls to the east and west, while to the north, doors stand in a wall of dark red stone—a contrast to the gray stone walls elsewhere in the chamber. Each door’s handle features a tiny little metal basket that looks like it’s meant to hold a small bead-shaped object.

Based on the setup and what you gleaned from the notes in the other room, you must place the garnet beads you found in the brimorak's room into the baskets on the door in order to progress. This knowledge makes it easy to progress until you reach a final chamber.

To the north of this room, the wall curves in a semicircle. A single red stone statue of an angry woman holding a ranseur stands to the north, her weapon held in one hand pointed toward the southern doors, while her other hand reaches out with a cupped palm, as if expecting a gift. The ranseur itself appears to be a real weapon, and not an integrated part of the statue itself. You have one of the garnet beads remaining, the largest of them all.

Perf recognizes this figure as Runelord Alaznist, ruler of this portion of the Thassilonian empire before its fall.

As soon as the garnet is set, the statue's hand closes around it in a fist and it holds out the ranseur in its hand for you to take. The ranseur has a Fearsome rune engraved on it as well as a small Sihedron rune engraved on either side of its head.

In the ceiling of this unfurnished room, in a single carved star, a fire flickers. The floor next to the southeast door bears a scorch mark, as if the area beyond the closed portal suffered an intense blast long ago. A 7-foot-tall statue of a bat-winged, vaguely humanoid bull with gold-colored horns stands in the southwest corner.

Perf recognizes the statue as being carved in the image of Haagenti, demon lord of alchemy, invention, and transformation. It holds a battle axe in its hands.

As Jathus steps into the room, he can tell that the axe is certainly real. As he steps closer, it suddenly raises the axe and swings it at him. He manages to get mostly out of the way, taking a nasty cut on his arm, but avoiding being cut down. After the slash, it resets into its prior pose.

The statue is unaffected by Perf's spell and you can't see any sort of mechanical method of triggering the trap. As best you can tell, the trap is magical in nature and animates the statue in order to attack any who get close.

Thankfully, you know you can go around through B5 to get past it.

"Yeah, no thanks," Jathus says, looking the statue up and down. He turns to go back the way they came and into the other room that had similar blast marks under the door. He takes a breath and opens the door, stepping carefully inside the hallway and wary of anything dangerous.

Jathus moves into the hallway to begin looking and spots two hidden doors. He opens the first and peers in.

This room’s walls, floor, and ceiling are caked with a thick layer of dark soot and ash. A five-foot-wide, two-foot-tall slab of red stone stands in the middle of the room, its top etched with the image of a seven-pointed star. Surrounding it stand five more slabs of red stone. These red pylons and the central stone are curiously devoid of any ash or soot, and occasionally seem to shimmer with faint fiery energy.

There are also three piles of ash and bone in various parts of the room. It seems that some people were in here when an explosion went off.

There is definitely magic in this room. Powerful magic. Upon closer inspection, the glow coming from the pylons seems to be coming from thousands upon thousands of glowing Thassilonian runes. It's impossible to know for sure what they mean as a whole, but further research is probably warranted when time permits.

Perf's cursory inspection gives him a near-instantaneous headache, but he presses on despite the dull ache in his head. The runes are woven together in a manner so complex that he can scarcely understand the most rudimentary aspects of it. He catches a lot of mentions of fire and some sort of trigger. One possibility is that it's a weapon of some type, which is consistent with the damage you see in here and down the hall outside of the room.

Perf raises his gauntlet to his head. This room is more powerful than I can yet grasp. I will sell the location of this room to the guild college. No one risk this as the only thing I can understand about it is that there is a trigger to activate something. This room is wound up tighter than a spring and ready to jump. Sadly, Perf closes the door as he exits and begins to draw a rudimentary map from the gravesight to here with the intent of selling it to the Thassilionian Studies guild.

The tunnel to the west is collapsed, barring your efforts to explore more deeply into this complex, but there is yet one door remaining that you haven't explored.

The walls of this room are adorned with unsettling carvings in an eerie-looking alphabet. To the east sits an even more unsettling sight—a five-foot-wide egg or plant bulb carved from dark green stone. Stony tentacles or roots radiate out from the sides of the egg, making it appear to be clinging to the eastern side of the room.

Jathus moves over and tugs on the fissures. There's a hissing sound as if air releasing and six separate sections open up like a flower. Inside, impaled by a number of spikes, is a humanoid skeleton. Resting between its ribs is a jade serpent wondrous figurine.

The insides of the contraption remind you of an iron maiden. It's definitely a torture device. Any clothing that the skeleton may have had on have long since decayed into nothingness, but the bones are quite ancient from the looks of them. Probably thousands of years old, despite how well-preserved they are.

You make your way back and down the tunnel you hadn't explored before. The low-ceilinged, wood-braced tunnel comes to an end at a stone wall through which a four-foot-diameter hole has been burrowed. The rectangular room beyond is lit by flickering flames at the center of seven-pointed star carvings on the east and west walls, while to the south, a pile of stone and rubble lies on the floor in front of a wooden door and under an open trapdoor in the ceiling. Goblin arms and legs protrude from the rubble.

Winona will spend the time among the townfolk, helping them (even if it is just simple labour) and listening to their problems. She feels like she's missing something, a kind of connection that might explain to her why people act the way they do. Also, her Shoanti heritage has often kept people at an arms length, and perhaps she has let that be a crutch. She also spends the mornings in prayer to Gozreh, attempting to further her understanding of his will and her own purpose.

In that case, it will be up to Abstalar and I to ward them off and we will need you to speak to her spirit and try to bring her peace."

She then turns to Winona, "I understand that you are a priest of some power. If necessary, we may need you to join in the ritual to help keep any wayward spirits away. Are you up to the task if we should come to require your aid?"

Perf waits excitedly to participate in this ritual. He resolves himself to remember every detail in the hopes of learning this ritual himself. Knowing these can take upwards of an entire day Perf excuses himself to run to the outhouse and takes it upon himself to have some food brought to the room to have the least amount of interruptions as possible before returning.

Winona is nervous, and nods. She's hesitant to invoke the spirits of the dead for it seems a great evil to her but decides that they're putting the spirit to rest, bringing her peace. "Anything you require of me, I'll do. What do you need me to do?"

"Hopefully you won't have to do anything but observe," Audrahni says to Winona, "Just be ready for anything, okay? Speak to Nualia's spirit if Abstalar and I are distracted. If you notice us becoming overwhelmed, feel free to join the ritual alongside us to keep the restless spirits at bay."

Once everyone understands the job, Audrahni explains that rituals such as this are best performed under moonlight. After the sun sets you rejoin them in the courtyard of the cathedral and they begin the ritual, which they inform you will take about an hour to complete. They begin chanting, occasionally moving to light a candle, burn incense, or sprinkle some sort of dust over the flames.

Faint whorls of moonlight begin to manifest and you can see shadowy figures moving around the clerics and a chill settles into the air. About ten minutes into the ritual, a harried-looking acolyte moves into the courtyard, "I'm sorry to interrupt," she whispers, "There is a mob outside and they are demanding to speak to Father Zantus. He told us all he is not to be disturbed, but someone needs to calm them down... Can you do it?"

Father Zantus and Audrahni are too deep into the ritual to interrupt it to answer now. The acolyte takes matters into her own hands, grabbing hold of Jathus and Zani's wrists and pulling them out to the front of the temple.

You find a group of about two dozen concerned locals gathered at the cathedral entrance. Some carry torches and lanterns, but for the moment none appear to be armed with actual weapons. As you approach, you hear voices calling out, demanding to speak with Abstalar and voicing concern about "taunting the dead" or "toying with evil spirits." Loudest among the voices is a young man hammering on the door with his fist—Charn Scarnetti.

Jathus steps out in front of the crowd, his hands up to show he is not armed. "Friends, friends, what seems to be the trouble here? Oh, Charn! Pleasure to see you as always. I still owe you that drink, don't I?" Jathus smiles, trying to disarm them with his good nature.

The crowd slowly begins to quiet somewhat and Charn looks angry to have someone else taking control of the mob he's gathered. A voice calls from the back of the crowd, "We're worried. There's dark magic going on here!"

"Dark magic?" Jathus says, raising his eyebrow in disbelief. "This is Father Zantus we're talking about, do you all really think he would allow anything to happen that could be a danger to Sandpoint? This is his home as much as any of ours! He is simply quieting a restless spirit. Now get on back to your homes - magic like this is made dangerous by interruptions, not the well-meaning man who has quite literally been here most of your lives!" He makes a shooing motion with his hands.

Some of the townsfolk seem ashamed by this and sort of drift away through the back of the crowd. As the numbers dwindle, others lose their nerve for a confrontation and also back off until the crowd is fully dispersed. Charn looks mutinous, but he follows the crowd as well.

When you return to the courtyard, you find Audrahni and Father Zantus nearing the end of the ritual. The dancing spirits seem harmless enough, but then more sinister apparitions appear; shadowy things with claws that begin attacking the dancing spirits. Audrahni looks at the group and motions for you to assist.

Intimidation to frighten the spirits
Performance to join the dancing spirits to bolster them
Religion to push back the evil spirits with prayer

Jathus carefully moves closer to the malevolent spirits, baring his fangs and hissing at them to both get their attention and hopefully drive them away. It works on some humans, why not spirits?

Perf's quick application of arcane magic strengthens the ritual, while Winona's prayers push the spirits back. Jathus steps in to intimidate the clawed spirits and they fade away into non-existence.

Nualia
A moment later, you hear a mournful cry and the spirit of Nualia appears before you, both beautiful and terrible. She is an aasimar woman with long hair wearing a breastplate that leaves her scarred abdomen exposed, her left hand a demonic claw and her eyes glowing with white light. Her entire ghostly form sheds a pulsing blue-green glow, an amplification of the moonlight into which she has been called.

The spirit looks at Father Zantus and cocks her head, speaking in a haunting voice, "I remember you... why did you call upon me... you hated me... you all hated me..." Father Zantus is in a trance as he leads the ritual, and so it's left to you to speak to the spirit.
OOC:
This will be run as an influence encounter. Basically, the more influence points you can gather, the better the encounter will turn out. Generally you will want to try the Discovery action first to learn things about the target and then Influence action to gain influence. There will be ten turns and you can each take one of the actions per turn

I recommend reading at least the first part of the influence rules so you have some idea what's going on

Listen Nualia, Ezakien was a terrible man. I know others may have thought differently of him, but as an orphan I learned how to see the in-between of a person's intentions. I never knew him personally, however I do know that to see the true measure of someone you need to look at how he treats those over whom they hold power; not their equals. We come to you asking for your aid of your own will with no demands.

Nualia's expression hard expression seems to crack for a moment, as if fighting some inner war, "Like Chopper before me, I was only one of the early dooms of Sandpoint. Seven more still lie in its future! When it finally burns, everyone will feel the same pain as I had to suffer!"

The crack in her mask is quickly overcome once more by her bitterness, "The only thing I hope for is to be placed in the same hell as my father so I can spit in his face!" she snarls, "I don't want your redemption. I want you to leave me alone!

Nualia’s expression softens, with sorrow beginning to replace her anger, "There were some that were kind to me, though so few..." she says softly, but then bitterness infuses her tone, "I can forgive them, but not those who forced me down this path. Those that tormented and taunted me, dooming not only themselves, but their children. The seven true dooms finish what was begun so long ago."

"Perhaps you cannot forgive those that harmed you," Jathus says with a shrug, "I don't blame you. Yet not everyone in this town, as you said yourself, was cruel to you. Some of those that treated you kindly have children now living here. Even those that wronged you, most are surely now long passed - their children should not suffer for the crimes of their parents. You have a chance now to let go of this anger, at least enough to be at peace. Isn't that what you deserve after all this, a peaceful rest? There must be something you can tell us about these Dooms that you mention, something that could help us make sure to end the cycle of suffering, no?"
