Recruiting: Bleach (anime/manga) Game using Cortex

I guess I could see the discovery aspect, potentially. I've been reading up about Cortex and I could see it's application for a system here. If you are okay with dropping the AI from PCs (or alternatively a hybrid of keeping it for those interested, and letting those that aren't keep separate) then I'd definitely be up for playing!

Although, I'm interested in which Traits you plan to keep (or add) and and stuff like that, or if I'm even reading the right rulebook... XD

An example combat:

Combat will usually start with the PCs followed by the GMCs. Everyone gets one turn before the round ends. On given turn, the player would describe any and all actions that make sense within the narrative (these actions should be informed by the dice chosen as PCs only get to add one die from each Trait set: Attributes, Distinctions, Skills, etc). PCs almost always have at least three dice in their dicepool while the GMCs usually only have 2.

Round 1-
Hero's Turn - 1d8 = 5, 1d8 = 7, 1d6 = 6 (this roll is interpreted to mean the hero rolled a 13 with an effect of d8)
Thug's Turn - 1d6 = 3, 1d6 = 3
Round 1 Result - The hero gives a good wallop to the thug, thug gains concussion (stress) (d8)

Round 2-
Hero's Action - 1d8 = 3, 1d8 = 4, 1d6 = 2, 1d8 = 8 (the hero gets to add the stress the thug is feeling to his dicepool)
Thug's Action - 1d6 = 4, 1d6 = 5
Round 2 Results - The hero continues to beat the thug, step-up concussion (stress) (1d10) (the option of creating a new stress at d8 was available, but was not taken in favor of stepping-up another stress)

Round 3-
Hero's Action - 1d8 = 1, 1d8 = 3, 1d6 = 6, 1d10 = 8 (any 1's rolled are called a Hitch (rolled by PCs) or Opportunities (rolled by GM) and can have additional effects but come at a cost of a Plot Point (PP are a system currency which enables dice tricks and other beneficial effects for the player)
Thug's Action - 1d6 = 3, 1d6 = 3
Round 3 Result - The hero looks to be handling this thug easily, step-up concussion (stress) (1d12). However, the hero rolled a Hitch and the GM gives the PC a PP and gives the hero a status: Doubt (stress) 1d6

Round 4-
Hero's Action - 1d8 = 6, 1d8 = 5, 1d6 = 5, 1d12 = 8
Thug's Action - 1d6 = 4, 1d6 = 5, 1d6 = 3 (the thug is attempting to take advantage of the doubt in the hero's mind)
Round 4 Result - The hero gives one final deciding blow and knocks the thug out, step up concussion (stress) (d12+, if any stress is stepped up above d12, the character is removed from combat). Now the hero will have to ruminate on the doubt that has entered his mind.

The above is a very simple example, and doesn't include any dice tricks from SFX that the PC can use or environmental assets that either the PC or GMC can create during the exchange.

Thank you for taking the time to explain, it makes sense. With a little hand-holding I think I can understand this system.

My only gripe with the system so far is it is extremely simplistic. Characters and enemies will hardly have any uniqueness to them stats-wise.

That tends to happen a lot with rules light games without locked in settings. The differentiation presumably comes with description, tactics, and distinctions. I'm sure it would be possible to broaden the stat blocks, but it would give more work to the GM.

I assume we'd be spending most of our time fighting Hollows anyway, at which point do they need a whole lot of complicated stats besides? (I suppose more unique ones might.)

To your second point, I will agree with what Tickettbror said. Rules lite systems tend to have rules that focus on allowing space for narrative input rather than rigid adherance to specific outcomes. I do get the appeal of systems with rigid and tightly interwoven rules, but they have grown out of favor with me in PbP.

Well I'm willing to give it a try. The system doesn't seem hard to learn, so that's a plus.

I don't mind the AI generation of the Zanpakutō. I think that not having full control over its emerging powers is in fact in line with the Bleach universe, where the Zanpakutō have traits that match their wielders, but are still separate beings. I would like to have some control over the theme however (elemental, Kidō, etc).

For example, I asked ChatGPT to make a cat-themed Zanpakutō and it made this lovely abomination.

As for the nature of your Zanpakuto, that can be fully decided by yourself or you can choose to have some amount of randomness applied if you would prefer to discover its power.

Did the base character sheet. I have a concrete idea for shikai and bankai (taken directly from a comic scenario that I am writing based on the Bleach mythology). So what I use for distinctions? Just whatever I like or it's something more rigid? What about the zanpakuto abilities?
