Yukari bows, and carefully lifts the girl. She takes her to the car she drove in with, and takes a moment to talk to someone on her phone before she climbs inside. When the door shuts, the situation ends with finality.
The following day begins brusquely. The early morning sun does battle with the cold blues of the retreating nighttime. It reflects off the occasional puddles that line the deserted road that leads up through to the Union Building.
You can tell as you start the ascent that whatever you’ve been summoned for, it’s related to the wolf. It’s not common to see a Mononoke of that size rampaging around Hisashiro even in the outskirts. Somehow, it’d gone undetected, which meant bad news for everyone.
On either side of the sleepy path are privately owned houses. They’re traditional, modern Japanese houses like something out of a movie. Each one owning its own regular patch of land up the curving white path. They’re eerily deserted.
To a mundane that might’ve been an unusual occurrence, but as a member of the awakened community you know that many of these houses belong to the higher-ranking exorcists. The ones that aren’t are simply deserted and used as decoys to make the area seem like a normal neighbourhood.
At the apex of the walkway is a massive, squat building. With its regular shape, high fence, and grey exterior it looks like a school from the sixties, or some kind of government building. Whatever the case, it’s an eyesore in the idyllic landscape.
