A couch would still be too close, I might still be tempted to smother him whilst he slept.
And yes, I brought the laptop, hoping you would fix it.
You do not need to send him anything, because he is forbidden from touching any more electronics in the house that are not his.
Apr 26, 2024 7:22 pm
Quote:
Aww... I hope he gets to take out his tech frustration on the robotics thing he got into. And yeah, I'm happy to look at the laptop.
The food arrives and Reg brings the cart into the sitting room, then stands back out of the way to pour himself a drink.
Quote:
I can't believe it's dark already. I hate time zones.
He sips his mocktail while looking around the walls for the electrical outlets.
Apr 26, 2024 7:26 pm
Derek grabs his burger and Stevie's salad and sits next to her on the couch and digs in.
Stevie is more reserved, but begins to eat.
Derek,
Quote:
So you gonna tell us what you found with the video?
Apr 26, 2024 7:29 pm
Henry retrieves his lobster roll, and Reg takes his salad. He sits down to eat, then groans at Derek's question.
Quote:
Man, it's soooo much. And have I mentioned that I hate it? Like, I hate it. I hated it for four hours straight, and it totally ruined that song for me. Did you guys watch it more than once?
He's obviously stalling for time, not wanting to watch the video again while he eats. Or maybe ever.
Apr 26, 2024 7:33 pm
Stevie nods,
Quote:
We watched it a couple times and wrote down some of the words we saw, which I think might be from the play if I am remembering right. But a lot of it went over my head.
Derek swallows a handful of fries,
Quote:
Yeah the dancing lady was creepy. I usually like ladies dancing with scarves, but she might have put me off it forever.
Stevie snorts and almost blows tea out her nose.
Apr 26, 2024 7:41 pm
Reg laughs around a bite of salad, covering his mouth.
Quote:
The lady was a little creepy, but it was more the words that worried me.
He begins moving things around and setting up his laptop while he eats, something he seems to have a lot of practice with.
Quote:
The secret message from the invitation is in there, too....
Apr 26, 2024 7:43 pm
Stevie steals one of Derek fries and stares him down and she eats it. Then takes his plate informing him that he done, and will clear off anyone else's plate who has finished.
She leans back to see what Reg has learned.
Apr 26, 2024 8:01 pm
Reg continues to eat, and ends up on the floor in front of the table on which he set his laptop. The screen shows a group photo of them all at the wedding reception in Hawaii.

He pulls up the video, turns the sound off, and puts it on slo-mo.
Quote:
Can everyone see?

Ok, so, it's either a video tape, or it's been made to look like a video tape. I have no idea what all this beginning stuff is. Advertisements, public access TV, whatever it is.
He skips over most of it, leading to the yellow screen.
Quote:
No clue here. Looks like the camera was set down in a doorway or a hallway or something? I dunno.

FBI warning. Moon.

And then there's the animated rose or red flower or whatever, spinning. It appears later in the video, too. I'm not sure it's a rose, and I don't remember any rose imagery in our prior investigation. Maybe it's a poppy, because this whole video seems to be about sleep.

Then there's a cartoon skeleton. Looks like a child, to me. Or a Hobbit?
He chuckles and turns to make eye contact with anyone he can, hoping to see a smile or a friendly face. He obviously hates this video.
Quote:
Thoughts so far?
Apr 26, 2024 8:05 pm
Derek,
Quote:
I don't remember anything about flowers.
Stevie just shakes her head.
Quote:
I think it is messed up.
Apr 26, 2024 8:18 pm
Quote:
Me, too.
He flips forward a few seconds.
Quote:
Ok, now this says the Acquisitions Team Needs You For Donations. Not sure who that is, but I guess cults need money, too.

and theeeeeeeennn... these fkin faces. I cannot tell you just how much I hate these faces. They are all over the place in this video, mirrored for symmetry. No clue what it's about, but I HATE it.

And then it's a "The End" card. This made me wonder if I was viewing the video backwards, but it didn't make any more sense in reverse.

Then there's Mr. Clown here. Some amusement park in the background, and "Local 58" which I guess is a TV Station? I didn't look it up on the flight. If you click through it, the eyes move, and that's fkin terrifying.

Any thoughts before I move to the part with all the phrases?
Apr 26, 2024 8:20 pm
Stevie looks kind of shell shocked and shakes her head mutely.
Derek puts his arm around her and says,
Quote:
This went to Henry alone right? I know Stevie and I didn't get it. I know the clown has been his special friend...
Apr 26, 2024 8:32 pm
Henry, who has been sitting very still and watching, is visibly angry at the presence of the clown on the screen.
Quote:
I know that's not the clown I saw, but I can imagine what they're trying to infer with it.
He motions for Reg to continue.
Quote:
Ok. So there's a screen that says "Sequence 4 Acceptance", and has the damned faces on it. The next screen says "Read Each Phrase Without Reading". Then it launches into an absolute ass-ton of phrases that last like, half a second each. Like it's supposed to be subliminal messages or something. I made a list...
He reaches forward and pulls a legal pad out of his laptop carrier. Anyone following his motion can see the Ars Goetia and several other familiar tomes sitting innocently in the bag.

Taking a deep breath, he reads the entire list.

Only the awake may think
Seeing is for open eyes
Cognition is a lie
I dream the world awake
There are no faces
Dreaming is a vestige
Sleep is Pretend
A Dream is a cowardly thought
Sleep is not civilized
The mind is a tyrant
This is your time now
I will never dream again
Stay out of your bedroom
There is work to be done
Dreams are just screaming with pictures
The pure of mind do not slumber
No good thought follows instinct
The lie of sleep seeks many vessels
We are our own gods
Let cognizance nourish itself
Logic is the final burden
The primitive mind deserves its nightmares
When we sleep we die
I am an idea thinking itself
They are not faces
The subconscious is a parasite
Dreaming is a cancer on the face of sleep
They follow night to bleed dreams
The primitive mind deserves its nightmares
Your home has another door
Unconsciousness is a threat
We are not meant to dream
You owe the messenger
What is true unmakes the false
Sleep is a scavenger

He looks at everyone.
Apr 29, 2024 6:35 pm
Henry reaches over and takes the paper from Reg.
Quote:
I am disturbed by all of these lines, but the one about your home having another door really gets my spine crawling. Could we be dealing with another set up like the night floors? I really don’t like the idea of doing that again after all these years.
Henry scans the paper and winces.
Quote:
I wonder if this list is only a catalyst sent to trigger a leap? Maybe I shouldn’t be looking at it at all?

While Henry is talking, Reg takes the opportunity to make more of a dent in his salad.

He shakes his head at the mention of the Night Floors. He didn’t want to do all of that again either, even though time and distance had made the memory more funny than disturbing.

Still, he didn’t like the implication that their houses - that HIS house - had another door.

He takes another bite, then dramatically rolls his eyes when Henry starts talking about Leaping. He and Henry had argued many times over the years about Henry’s obsession with keeping the four of them from being in the same room at the same time - something that had spoiled dozens of gatherings, and made Reg give up on trying to schedule reunion vacations.

Not wanting to argue in front of Stevie and Derek, he bites his tongue. Now wasn’t the time. They needed to be united… though he couldn’t keep from cutting his eyes at Henry before speaking.
Quote:
I don’t know. To me, this seems a lot like those tapes you get to help with Lucid Dreaming, but in reverse. This is all about NOT dreaming. But why? To stop Huck from sending nightmares like we all used to get?

Is this instructions on how to fight Huck? Are these people on OUR side?
Apr 29, 2024 6:40 pm
Henry ignores Reg rolling his eyes, knowing that this isn’t the place to rehash the old disagreement. Even if Henry wasn't the cause of it, which was doubtful, he believed he had put an end to the Leaping by maintaining the separation of the group. It didn’t matter if everyone was mad about it, facts were facts.

Henry's face shows new a concern.
Quote:
Stop the dreaming in order to stop the artist and other freethinkers like we saw in the 1920s?

Reg leans forward to put his salad bowl on the table, then shakes his head.
Quote:
That’s not what I’m getting from it. I don’t think it’s that kind of "dreaming"- not that sort of poetic "I have a Dream" sort of dreaming. I think this is trying to get you to actually stop having dreams when you go to sleep at night. Like, actual dreams, actual nightmares.

It says "The primitive mind deserves its nightmares" twice. I think it’s saying people need to evolve away from dreaming and nightmares, because "Sleep is not civilized" and "Dreaming is a vestige".

A lot of the verbiage is stuff we can recognize, as if it’s from someone who knows what’s up with Huck, but my main question isn’t about what they’re saying. It’s about who is saying it? And why?

Who is the Acquisitions Team?

And if this is "Sequence 4 - Acceptance", what are the other three sequences? Acceptance is one of the Stages of Grief - is this something like that?

Derek looks like he is at a tennis match, looking at Henry then Reg then Henry then Reg.
He nods at both of them,
Quote:
I think we are trying to solve a puzzle that we do not have all the pieces for yet.
Stevie,
Quote:
I agree, but it is better to already have some ideas on hand, so when we get more 'pieces' we know what we are dealing with quicker.
Apr 30, 2024 1:46 pm
Quote:
Yeah, I agree. Totally.
Reg stands up and stretches his legs, then pours himself another Sunset. He seems to be stalling as he sips his drink and rubs his lower back.

Eventually he turns back to the laptop.
Quote:
Ok, so that was the end of Part One.
He takes a deep breath and lets it out slowly.
Quote:
Now for Part Two. The part that sucks.
He clicks to the next screenshot, showing white text on a black screen.
Quote:
This is Cassilda’s Song, from the novel Huck Finn. NOT the play, just the regular novel that I think we’ve all read by this point. I know you read it, Derek. Anyway, I’ll read you the whole thing.
He reaches out and takes his notes back from Henry.

Along the shore the cloud waves break,
The twin suns sink behind the lake,
The shadows lengthen
In Carcosa.

Strange is the night where black stars rise,
And strange moons circle through the skies
But stranger still is
Lost Carcosa.

Songs that the Hyades shall sing,
Where flap the tatters of the King,
Must die unheard in
Dim Carcosa.

Song of my soul, my voice is dead;
Die thou, unsung, as tears unshed
Shall dry and die in
Lost Carcosa.

Quote:
So now we’re really getting back into it. Because….
He clicks to the next screen.
Quote:
It’s ya boyyyy!

Stevie leans forward, intrigued,
Quote:
That is some sort of drawing of the king? Interesting art style. Can anyone cross reference it to an artist or style?
Apr 30, 2024 2:12 pm
Quote:
Reminds me of the image we had from that book, where there is an illustration of the... of Huck Finn where he has removed his mask, but the top of the image that would have shown his real face was torn away.
