It's raining in London... again (RP)

"Huh? I told you. Millicent asked me to find someone who knows about books, the magic kind, you know. And I thought about you." He explains. "Stone bitch talks to me sometimes, all the statues do." Jim looks uncomfortable about this fact.

"I asked about the book, if it had to be the very one that was stolen from her. She does not always answer straight, or straight away —they don't really live in our time, you know. She scoffed at me, 'so long as it has Byron's notes', she says, says she was reading those." He shrugs, watching you make breakfast and seemingly more interested in you than in the food.

"Your turn. What happened here?"

"The statue talked to you? Hmmm, interesting"

Jacob sees no reason why he shouldn't explain what happened to Jim. In fact, it might be a good idea, as Slippery Jim happens to know a lot of people all over London.

"Someone who goes by the name of Chaudry has sent some minions to try and rob my shop. Maybe you know him, it seems he's a wizard who likes to play with demons," he asks Jim in return.

"Mainly they talk to each other." Jim concedes. "I overheard enough that some of them started trusting me. Not much value in it." He sounds disappointed. "But they do see everything that happens... if you can get them to care enough to notice or to share details from the right timeframe. I haven't worked out yet how to... you know, 'profit', but Millicent owes me a Debt for coming to you, maybe a big one if you can deliver."

He listens to your tale, taking in all the details. "'Chaudry'? You say?" He muses, speculatively nodding until you get the 'wizard' part. "Oh, I don't have truck with wizards, they are tricky and quick to anger. That's Pratchett, that is." He says, badly quoting Tolkien.

"And associating with demons?! Who would do such a thing?!" He pantomimes shock and horror at the idea.

• Does he officially know you are a demon? It sure looks like he is implying... :)

Jim does not owe you any Debts, but, as you say, he does know people and could help... if it were in his best interests.

Mark walked through the streets; his memory and familiarity carried him to the well-known Café Nocturne, a place he and Jena have visited several times for their arcane studies and life discussions. The staff were so familiar with them that they didn't greet him and only nodded politely, pointing in the direction where Jena was waiting. Mark came and sat opposite Jena, smiling warmly and calmly. She was sitting in her familiar style, with a book and tablet in front of the table, busy taking notes without a care for anything else in the world. A cup of hot chocolate was kept beside her book, evidently forgotten and slowly getting cold.

As soon as Mark sat, one of the staff gave him a cup of hot Darjeeling tea, which caused Jena to look up, her thick-rimmed spectacles sliding a bit at the sudden movement. She looked up and smiled, "Oh, you have arrived. You called me out of my sleep, you know I do the night shift. I hope this is interesting."

Mark nodded and added, "Oh, it is. Have you looked into wand architecture and components before?" He took out the wand from his cloth and set it front of the table. Jena looked at it carefully, taking it in her hand and inspecting it closely. "Umm...and something else. We need to visit the Sanctum. Whatever you know, this won't be completely examined without poking into it with special care. You know what I mean."

Charles Whittier was there today, the almost fifty balding brown haired man was actually a veteran of the Iraq war. He had experience dealing with demons there too, (also known as Djinn and Shaitan) his experience was good even if he wasn’t hunting anymore because of an IED that took his legs.

He took helped Rhiannon spread the stones over a table as she said, "They turned into stone after I killed them."

Charles nodded and adds, "Nice to see you’re learning from the past. Seems like most of them are here and likely no one will notice the stone on the street but, let’s see if this is dangerous young lady shall we?"

She felt like she was in class every time she worked with Charles. Unlike York, who would complain about her being a girl, Charles just treated her like she was a younger learner and she couldn’t blame him there. He had years of experience and wanted to relay it to the others because he couldn’t easily go out on the hunt.

Benji shakes his head at the offer of food. "Benji," he corrects her, with a small shrug that indicates she was close enough.

He does know Miriam. He still has her over for afternoon tea sometimes, in fact. She used to be a vampire hunter, but things got a bit much for her a few years back and Benji was quick to encourage her to retire. She’s been doing a lot better since then, in his opinion, and has had more time to focus on herself and kick a few bad habits. He cocks his head at the sergeant. "I’m afraid I don’t recall your name."

He frowns as the sergeant explains the situation. It sounds like Lizabeth is in more trouble than he thought. "Who’s ‘they’?"

Jacob smiles enigmatically at Jim's comment. He's never revealed his true nature to the beggar, but he's a smart chap, and Jacob bets he already has an educated guess on the subject. Probably reinforced by today's destruction of the bookshop, while Jacob has not so much as a wrinkle in his suit.

"I think Pratchett's wizards would prefer at least four good meals a day, but yes, I see your point," he replies.

"As a matter of fact, I am very busy trying to find out why someone is willing to kill me just to get an item from my shop. But if I could get someone to find out for me, that would give me some free time to find the book for your lady..."

"Interesting." Jena says, stroking the stave and even putting it to her ear and giving it a sniff. "Stone? What does it do?"

She is all curiousity until you bring up the topic of the Sanctum, the mere mention of the place makes her shudder. "Uh, I would prefer not to." She says, reaching for her hot chocolate and frowning in surprise that is not no longer 'hot'. She let's out a resigned sigh and sets it aside.

"No." She says, more forcefully. "I really don't want to go back there."

What has her so scared? What do you do?

Charles scratches the stone with his fingernail, which seems like a bad idea, especially since it leaves a deposit under the nail. "Hmm..." He says, wheeling over to a bench with scientific equipment on it and scrapping off some more onto a glass slide, then putting it under a microscope.

"Come over here." He says. "Take a look at this. Does that seem to be moving to you?"

Is there any sign of movement in the sample? Even the slightest?

"I don't think we actually met. But I had to take Miriam to you a time or two when she was... hurt or in need. I wasn't supposed to come in or see who she was going to, but, you know, 'police curiosity', so I spied." She gives you a shy smile.

"I'm Kenedi." She answers your question. You can see from her uniform name badge that this is her surname, and she does not share her first name with you, either because she does want to or because she is so accustomed to be just being called 'Kenedi' or 'Sergeant Kenedi'.

"'They'?" She says impatiently. "You know, the higher-ups, my bosses bosses." She shrugs, which draws your attention to her neck, the food smell and very idea of 'eating' not helping with your Hunger. "My boss was not happy to deliver the order, I know that much."

"Hey, everybody would prefer at least four good meals a day. And many of the wizards I have seen have evidently had them."

When you mention 'the item' again, Slippery Jim tries to look casual, his face to his plate. "What item specifically?" He asks, sounding like all he wants is to be helpful.

He ignores the suggestion of his getting involved. He already stated he wanted nothing to do with wizards, and now you have added murderous demons to the pot, he wants none of that brew. 'Where's the profit', as he would say. You would need to heavily sweeten the pot if you want to get anything out of Slippery Jim.

Jena has been scared about the sanctum after the incident where he got locked in the room for half of a day. Who knows what happened to her on that time, but she always avoids the topic and is traumatised by it. Mark knows that it is a risky place but they have both worked previously to unravel the curse. She was not always like this, and previously, both of them worked together in the sanctum until that incident occurred.

Mark sighed but didn't want to give up, "Hey, I know what happened on that time. But, it's not going to happen again. I will be there by your side and I did rescue you, didn't I? Have faith in my abilities. Did you know this stave was used by a demonic creature. Who knows what they are up to. We need to look into this and find it's mystery. Look, I will make it up to you. What do you want in return if I ask you to spend two hours in researching this. Then you are out. You don't have to stay in the sanctum. Please?" He made an earnest face.

"Both times." Jena says in a small voice, maybe too soft for you hear over the rain on the tarpaulin above. She looks at you, her lip quivering and her eyes filled with unshed tears. The promise that you will be there strengthens her resolve, but not enough. "I'm sorry." She says, looking very dejected. "I can't! I can't go back there."

She hands back the stave and stands suddenly, knocking over her hot chocolate, the sound of the cup smashing on the stone floor make her jump and then giggle slightly hysterically.

She glances at her silent phone, and apologises again. "I have to get to the museum." She explains, even though earlier she said she would still have been asleep if you had not called.

"I'm not sure what item", and Jacob is not lying. Technically, he's not sure about whether the demons were after the cross."That's one of the things I need to find out"

"Surely asking a few questions around won't cost you much, and I will help you with finding that book. This is what you want, isn't it?"

Mark sighed and took back the stave. His expression was clearly a dejected one, but he looked up and forced a smile. "I know your routine, Jena; if you had early shifts, I wouldn't have kept you waiting. Anyway, I won't force you again, but you know where the sanctum is, and if you are as curious about this as I am, then you know where to find me. I just thought that you would be very excited about more arcane research. It has been quite sometime since we have done that."

He finished his coffee and paid for both of them and the broken cup. Leaving the cafe, he walked towards the sanctum, determined to work on this alone.

Jena looks hurt that you would call her on her fib. "Jenny is not feeling well." She says. "And there is a big, week-long, school function that she was working on. A treasure hunt."

She turns and walks away, her back very straight.

Slippery Jim nods, his downcast eyes all over the shop looking at 'items'. It is unclear if he believes you, but he does not push overtly.

"I am not a delivery boy!" He says indignantly. "I am a messenger boy." He adds more quietly. "My part is done... so long as you agree to find the stone bitch's book? Else I need to find someone who will. I do people, I would not even know where to start looking for a 'magic book'."

Slippery Jim has been particularly prickly about any perceived mockery today, this suggests he is thinking about Status. The internal politics of the Beggars' Guild is murky, at best, no one from outside knows who runs the Faction —you doubt most of the Beggars even know for sure, but Slippery Jim is not a big-wig, it seems he is looking to move up... again.

No Debts are involved in your current transaction with Slipper Jim. Millicent owes him a Debt for finding you, and Millicent would owe you a Debt for finding the book, but Jim is not doing you a favour, nor you him in this scene, it is a wash.

The larger piece of stone rattles a bit on the table and she stabs it with her seax. It breaks into smaller pieces and she curses. Charles chuckles from over at the mass spectrometer and some beakers. "So, some mage summoned these to just look at an item from another mage hmm?"

She nods, "Far as I know why?"

He shrugs and says, "More than one demon…"

She sighs, "Means there are more than one. Always check the full count. I’ll go hit the streets and see if there are any more. Let me know if you get anything from these?"

Charles nods as he continues his experiments and she heads out.

Benji’s fingertips tap a complicated rhythm on the tabletop, trying to drown out the appetizing double thump of Kenedi’s heartbeat. "…Right, but more specifically? Do you know who the orders are coming from?"

"Egads!" Charles exclaims when he eventually stops postulating and looks up from his equipment and sees the larger chunks move. He was fixated on small movements under the microscope, but this is bad.

"This is bad." He says. "Does it look to you like they are trying to reform? Looks that way to me." He confirms his hypothesis with a measuring tape from his belt and shakes his head in worry.

"You sure you got all the pieces?" He asks ominously. You definitely can't be sure, there may be bits left in the gutter, but worse, those kids may not have given them all back.
