It's raining in London... again (RP)

"Specifically? No, we never do." Kenedi sighs. "It always could be from 5 or 6." You know she means MI-5 or MI-6, 'spies' and such, "Or merely 'part of an ongoing investigation'. They don't tell us so that we can't speculate." She shrugs.

"I don't know why anyone would be interested in Lizabeth, though. She is not involved with anything serious? Do you know what she was doing?"

Do you know anything about what Lizabeth was up to? What do you do?

"Of course you're not a delivery boy, that's why I'm asking you to help me. I need someone who is capable," Jacob tries to reassure Jim.

"Think for a moment. When this is all over, you'll be the one who delivered a magical book and the one who foiled the plans of an evil wizard. You will be the envy of all your colleagues".

Jacob remains silent for a moment, to give him time to consider his proposal.

"I'll find the book, and Millicent will owe us big time. Meanwhile, you find out about Chaudry, and when I've finished him off, I'll let everyone know it was thanks to you. Do we have a deal?"

"I was thinking that she might have found something she wasn’t supposed to in the mud," Benji suggests. "There’s also…" he trails off, gingerly touching the side of his face where the bruise is flowering across his temple. There’s also the possibility that whatever she’s involved in has something to do with this Chaudry and his demons. He’s sure he isn’t her only less-than-human friend. Perhaps she got tangled up with someone dangerous? "Well, anyway, thank you for sharing this with me. I don’t suppose you know how long it will be before she’s released?"

Rhiannon does her best to track down any of the demon parts. Unfortunately she didn’t get the teacher’s number and has no idea what school the kids were from. To top it off she can’t find any evidence near the mage’s last known location.

She has to pull out her phone and call up Mark, "Mark, I am worried about these demons. The pieces might be reviving and I am not sure I got them all. Do you know a way to track them down ?"

Mark stood outside the Sanctum doors watching the building and its several stained, arched glass panels. A lightning struck somewhere close, giving a flash of light followed by the booming thunder. He proceeded to open the door and get inside the house. Even though it was big, the sound of rain seemed to be closer, echoing throughout the house. He went to grand library and started taking out books about demonology (which he had very few) and arcane implements. Lighting up a lamp, he started researching staves.

After almost two hours, he took his arcane implements and went to the large working room. It had several tables and instruments, including a large empty floor space to draw summoning circles. All his books were kept open at the table, where Mark took meticulous measurements of the stave, did component studies, and did several sketches of the body. After some more time, he brewed coffee and looked back at his table. Jena used to sit on the other one and constantly poke holes in his theories. He absentmindedly smiled at the thought. He really missed those time and Jena's company. Finishing the coffee, he started inducing minute magic on the stave, trying to see how it reacted back. At one point, certain magic caused it to fire a projectile of flame that shot out and scorched the opposite wall. He took a break from the work and started an old gramophone music player.

After, he came back and drew a large goetic symbol on the floor, keeping the wand in the centre to contain its magic. This was going to be an elaborate spell to see the potential of the stave contained in a protection circle. Taking a deep breath, he infused magic into the stave, waiting to see how it reacted.

"Hell no!" Slippery Jim exclaims. "That is the opposite of what I want, your telling everyone that I went against a wizard!"

Slippery Jim looks sheepish. "Hey, I like you, man. But Millicent already owes me, the rest is up to you." He considers for a moment. "I will keep my eyes and hears open, and if I hear anything about this 'Chaudry', I will tell you, but I want my name kept out of this. You've got to promise me that."

Given how little is known about the internal politics of the Beggars' Guild, you are not overly surprised that Slippery Jim wants to remain clandestine about his dealings. They rely a lot on being overlooked and ignored and thought of as unimportant. Their ambitions are subtle and hard to understand.

"That's a valid point." Kenedi agrees. "I wonder what it could be that has 'them' so stirred up." She does not miss your touching your bruised face —cop's eyes, and all— but does not press the matter.

"I can't guess when she will be released." She apologizes. "You didn't get this from me." She says, writing a note in her pad and slipping it to you under the table. "Maybe her lawyer be willing to talk?"

You now have the lawyer's number. What do you do?

The stave seems to be a basic blasting rod, a one-trick-pony, even if it is a rather effective trick if 'blasting' is what one is after.

This would have been so much easier with Jena's help. Absent that help it will take many more hours to work up some sort of specific nullification for the staves, and even then it will be unreliable and you may have to set up your field right before needing it.

The circle seems to inhibit the stave's ability to draw in power, so, with what you have, you are pretty sure you can stop them from recharging and being used too many times in a row. But you don't know how many charges they start with, though it can't be many, else they would fall appart.

With some additional hours of work you should be able to improve the frequency response of the circle to prevent them from firing at all. This will also require test-firing the stave more times, which could damage your property and it is not quiet, and you don't want the neighbors to call the cops to your Sanctum, so that is tricky.

Benji pockets the lawyer’s number and flashes Kenedi a fanged smile as he stands up to leave. "Thanks! That should certainly come in handy. If you notice anything else ‘weird’ and you need someone to talk to about it… well, you know where I live, right?"
May 21, 2024 12:26 pm
"Certainly, apologies if there was any misunderstanding. I'll make sure not to mention you," Jacob concedes."You have my number, so please let me know if you hear anything. Now, I have a book to find," he adds with a wink, allowing Jim to finish his breakfast.

Rhiannon adds a call to Benji as she stands outside of an old warehouse where there are assuredly no hellhounds and no mages. She thinks that maybe she's being a bit too much like her old self when she has people she could have, at least, tried to get information from. She picks up her phone and types in a text:

Rhiannon: Hey Benji. I looked around the old place where I found that hellhound ring and not a single sign of a mage or the stone demons. Any chance you happened to get some info?

Kenedi looks a little startled by the flash of fangs, but she covers it well enough. It seems she is 'in the know', but not very knowledgeable, so she possibly does not understand the implications of 'coming to you', but people need to be careful when they decide to play in the supernatural world.

"If I hear anything that will help I will try to let you know." She sounds nervous about being caught, but she did not go to herculean efforts to avoid being noticed, she brought you to a place just around the corner from the cop-shop, somewhere she obviously frequents often enough for them to know her standing order. She might well get into trouble and need your help.

When you ask if she knows your place she almost tries to deny it, but then remembers that she already admitted to following and seeing where Lizabeth went. She merely nods.

"I can't make any promises." Slippery Jim says as he wipes his face. "But I will call you if I have anything for you. Thank you for the hospitality." He says, and you get the impression he literally means just that, 'the hospitality' rather than 'the meal'. Beggars probably get food all the time, but most people don't invite them into their homes.

Slippery Jim makes his way out into the rain.

Benji opens his umbrella as he steps out into the rain. He decides he’ll call Lizabeth’s lawyer later. Right now, he really needs to do something about his head... He’s in pain and he knows that feeding would make him feel a lot better, but he did just eat at Jacob’s so he doesn’t actually need to feed again so soon. Perhaps he should just go to a doctor instead… While he weighs up his options, he texts Rhiannon back:

Hey Rhiannon!
The demons got off the train at my station (coming from the Green Park direction) so, if you’re trying to find that Chaudry fellow, that’s where I would start. I’ve also heard possible rumours of hellhounds wandering around the tracks in that same direction, though, if you want to take a look around the tunnels, I would recommend waiting until after the last train tonight so you don’t get flattened by a train…
On an unrelated note, do you have a doctor you usually go to when you’re hurt? One who won’t be surprised by my teeth, so to speak?
Yours,
Benji

The work on the Stave continued when Mark's cellphone rang. "Rhiannon. You say that they are reforming? That's indeed troublesome. I can try to track the pieces down but I am busy now. I am working on a spell to nullify their stave so I don't think I can help you today. Maybe tomorrow?"

Jacob waves Jim goodbye, and returns to the comfort of his bookshop. After arranging for a repair service to mend the apartment's shattered window and refresh the ceiling's paint, he delves into the true task at hand. His research leads him down several paths: one traces the life of Millicent Fawcett, and explores the connection between her and M. Shelley or Lord Byron, and a second seeks a rare edition of Frankenstein, possibly annotated by Byron himself.
OOC:
I have plenty of books, so I guess I can start my research here, and don't need to ask for more favours for the time being :)

She chuckles at Benji and texts back:
"Don’t you just drink your usual? I know a few goths at Uni who’d probably be happy to be Bella to your Edward. If you need some real healing though I might be able to hook you up. Let me check."

She gives a call to her normal doctor, a former girlfriend who is somewhat in the know. Beverly Hallson has seen a few demons and fixed Rhiannon enough to know other things exist. "Hey Bev, I have a friend who got hurt by some demons. He needs some healing and you’re my usual go to. Just be warned he has fangs and a penchant for drinking blood."

While she is talking with her friend she drives down to Green Park and does some looking around. Something in the area might show as being demonic. She hopes…

With Mark she texts back:
"No, you nullify that stave. Benji had some leads that I am following. Just keep me in the loop. Thanks!"

Mark read the text and then went back to his work with the stave. Hours went by, when he finally understood, that he needed a bigger infusion of arcane energy to see its full potential. He prepared food and started eating. His eyes darted to his phone, and he remembered about Jena. This could have been so much easier with her around. Maybe he will call her and request her aid. But not in the sanctum. Finishing his meal, he took the phone and gave a call.

"Jena, how was the treasure hunt? I think I would need your help but don't worry, you don't have to come to the sanctum. Is there any abandoned place where we can do some experiments without people noticing?"

None of your copies of Frankenstein have annotations by Byron, and you don't recall coming across mention of such a book in your extensive research in the past. Something is amiss.

Millicent Fawcett was a great crusader for early women's rights, you think. Wasn't Rhiannon into that sort of thing when that whole deal with her demon lover —who shall not be named— happened? Maybe she will be able to help you understand the woman better?

"I don't know." Bev replies, though there is a touch of humor in her tone. "Sounds dangerous, and the last time you sent one of your 'friends' to me there was trouble. Maybe you should come along, keep me safe? Then make sure there are no problems afterwards, for a few hours?"
