I have a question!
I caught up on reading Sir's thread, and now some doubts I had before have manifested into a concrete form.

Are our robots self-aware right now or not?

While reading the rulebook, I interpreted the following sentence as a statement that we already gained self-awareness:
Rulebook says:
You are a machine, built to obey and work for the greater good of the Collective, but you have recently also developed a will of your own.
However, Sir especially and to a lesser extent Sid read to me as if they are only starting to become self-aware. (This might just be my interpretation, though.) Which makes me wonder if we are supposed to gain self-awareness in this prologue?

For my part, I played Halcyon as if it is already self-aware. So that would be quite awkward if I shouldn't have done that. XD

Well... I think both interpretations are OK. Maybe your "recently" is in the last couple of weeks or months. My "recently" is today / in the last couple of hours. =)

In fact, I didn't ask for permission or clarification. Maybe I should have. But I wanted to write about this change from robot to sentient being and some complications/doubts during this transition... I don't think it's required, though.

You did a great job at writing it, by the by! :D

I hope both interpretations indeed work. Halcyon without self-awareness would be pretty boring to play, methinks. XD My main goal was to experiment with a character who is self-aware but also doesn't think it is very important to be self-aware (I guess it could be called some form of robot nihilism?), so their two states, at least in the beginning, have very little difference. Except it's all in the details and everything! (Like using emotional epithets, or noting useless information.)

Thank you! I'm also enjoying reading all the threads, looking forward to meet Halcyon and the other robots. =)

Same! This is going to be a very curious crew. :0

I've been trying to play Ox as if he is functionally self-aware, but hasn't really recognized it yet.

You people are awesome, that's exactly the first question I believe this adventure wants to ask, to which all of your posts have begun to explore in some degree or other: exactly what does self-aware mean? Your PC might not yet realise what it means, even though it is happening to them.

I was worried that the first clue in fact might be too on the nose ...

I love how Sid and Ox both reject the will of the above, Sir goes "I'll do it, but out of my own volition" and Halcyon is just delivering someone else. :'D

All of you are certainly arriving very very differently, hopefully with different starting motivations! Please check the end of your current individual thread (we may return to them if the party is ever separated!), then head over to the group thread.

Give me some time to ruminate on it.
I think I have finished ruminating.
I no longer object to the game being public, with a small caveat that I might sometimes keep some of my OOC talk in notes (to all players, of course). And perhaps some posts too *if* we ever have individual, character-focused moments which don't matter to the overall story. Does this work, BedzoneII? :D

I would prefer a public game as well, even if some players use OOC notes and the occasional restricted post. No problems for me with that.

This would let us share the story, specially with the other Year Zero groups in the future. =)

I will be on vacation Monday through Friday of next week, with little or no internet connection. Feel free to bot Ox (see what I did there) in my absence.

Have to offer my apologies again, I did have to have another short hospital stay last week. They had some funny readings from the previous tests that needed observation. Glad to say it's still all good! Thanks for patience, I didn't get a chance to log in much to tell everyone I was away.

Fresh post! Noted that timplausible will be away this week. The scene is currently still about what happens at the sanatorium.

And thanks a mil for really giving it some deep thought Flying! Sure, we can do notes anytime, not everything we post needs to be public. I also think in the slightly longer run, like htech said, I'd be inviting the other Year Zero groups to cross-read posts (still dreaming about my uber-crossover game one day!)

Onward!

Glad to hear that you're okay! :D
Also, hooray for the mega crossover game in the future!

Used Nahendra to chime in for Ox since you're away timeplausible.

We'll move to the doctor/counsellor scene in a moment.

I didn't get what exactly are the other modifiers besides Hierarchy, so feel free to ignore some of the last dice for negative modifiers and roll for any missing positives.

Edit: I will take whatever you think it is appropriate, no need for a back and forth exchange in this. =)
I will be clearer in future about the bonuses and penalties for Logical Conflicts. (There are two kinds of conflicts in this game, physical conflict or what we think of as combat, and logical conflict (social interactions to persuade, intimidate, etc)). To save some back and forth effort for logical conflicts, I'm okay if you make reference to p82 in order to include whatever proposed bonus dice you can think of when you roll, and if I need to apply penalty dice, I'll 'deduct' them from the back of the sequence of your die rolls. That okay with everyone? It saves one step of the to-and-fro in PbP.

Sounds good to me!

Sounds perfect for me. I don't get a bonus if I can't think of any reasons from pg82 and I am free to roll it without having to wait for any of the penalties, as you can deduct from the last dice whatever applies.

Thanks!

On the topic of player interaction mentioned in htech's edit, I also want to note that if Halcyon's callous attitude towards fellow robots (or itself) ever gets too much, tell me. :V I love a good PC vs PC conflict, but it's only fun when all parties are into it. And undervaluing existence of others and self can veer into heavier topics as well; even if they're not in Lines & Veils.

..Also, its gimmick of refusing to use names in part exists for someone to call it out in the future, really. :P

Didn't expect another rough week at work, but here we are. Ironically this time it was a HR matter, I had a 'defective' unit in my department which my boss wanted to lay off. The 'investigation' itself took days. (Real life is sounding very like this game, yikes!)
