[CLOSED] Classic 1920s CoC in ARKHAM

Be sure to read and follow the guidelines for our forums.

ARKHAM - City of Legendhttps://i.imgur.com/uZ0IzC3.jpegThis is a classic-era (1920s) Call of Cthulhu adventure, set in the legend-haunted fictional city of Arkham, Massachusetts. The characters will start with no knowledge of the Cthulhu Mythos. It helps if the characters already know each other, and if at least one of them is an academic, a librarian or antiquarian.
-NUMBER OF PLAYERS:
I am looking for a small dedicated group of THREE PLAYERS, which I find the optimal number to run my games in play-by-post. I will select three players out of those who register their interest in the Recruitment Thread (NOT on a first-come, first-serve basis).

-POST FREQUENCY:
once per day would be ideal, to keep the story moving. I can post most days, and at the weekend.

-GAME DURATION:
this is a one-off adventure, but who knows: with the right group, it could lead to other stories...

-PLAYER REQUIREMENTS:
this is a Call of Cthulhu 7th edition game, but no previous knowledge of the game is necessary (and you don't need to own any books to play, I will share relevant rule sections). Open to anybody, all I ask is that you are sure to be able to commit to the posting frequency explained above, and that you are respectful of others. We're here to have fun.

-WHAT TO EXPECT:
this is a horror game, in the Lovecraftian canon. Characters are not superheroes, and the horrors they will face are often overwhelmingly dangerous and deadly. Direct confrontation will result in characters going insane or dying. The focus is on investigating a mystery. My GMing style is based on storytelling above rules, and I like to enrich a story with images to help set a mood.

-HOW TO APPLY:
there is a thread in the Games Tavern, register your interest there, tell me how well you know your Lovecraft / Cthulhu Mythos, and pitch me your idea for a character. It is NOT a first come, first-serve game, I'd like to select three players from all applicants.

I'm currently at a game load where I have to be very selective with joining more and I'm not the biggest 1920s fan, so I think I'll pass on this one, but I can definitely recommend Dr_B as a GM. I've had some great and very memorable games with him.

I am really interested to try this. I haven't played the game before and don't know the rules but I am familiar with H.P. Lovecraft's stories.

Hello Dr_B,

I have recently both the COC 7th ed books to hopefully learn the game. I would love to join in your game if you would have a newbie join your ranks. Thank you for the chance to be a part of your game

You had me at CoC 1920. I'm interested.

I'm open to playing any kind of character that would fit the story, maybe an antiquarian, who owns a rarity store, the kind of place where you can buy a clock made out of a stuffed crocodile.

Thank you for the interest so far - and thanks bowl for your kind endorsement 😁

Leaving this open for a while to allow others to express their interest

The 1920's are a favorite era for me in TTRPG's. I have the CoC quickstart and full 7th edition, played in a game a few years ago that didn't get too far, and another years before that in a Lovecraftian Savage Worlds game as a Deep One. I'd enjoy playing a skeptical, high society professor if you'll have me.

I'd be interested, I've played CoC a fair few times over the years, though 7th edition only once (and that was 1930s pulp). Oddly we've never played in Arkham in all the times I've played.
First instinct is to be a Librarian, but it seems like all the expressions are already for academic characters, so I'm happy to fit somewhere else. Possibly either a wealthy patron of one of the other characters (because credit rating opens doors and dilletante allows some eccentric skills), or a wayward niece (or other family member) who fell in with the wrong crowd (to give us a character with... less legal means of investigation).

I'd be interested. My idea for a character is a young woman whose father served in the Great War as a pilot. From him, she learned to fly (and several other useful skills) and has become an adventurer. I've run CoC and played on occasion, so my mythos lore is pretty good.

I'd love to be a part of this game. I have played a few short games of CoC before, and own the main books.

As for character, on the spur of the moment I'm not sure, I'm fairly open. perhaps a private detective, occultist or journalist.

Would love to play, Dr. B, but you've got tons of interest already and while my game load isn't that heavy, I have a ton of travel coming up. Best to watch from afar for me here. Jealously!

Glad to see more CoC games appearing. Good Luck Investigators!

I'm intrigued by the idea of playing something like a sawbones 1920 surgeon researching the 'lost' medical procedures of brilliant predecessor who was ultimately shunned as insane and dangerous.

(I've never actually played the CoC system--I've read quite a bit of Lovecraft, though I'm not really a hardcore studier of the lore (and in general my memory is terrible). The piece that probably hits home the most to me is the 1st page of 'The Silver Key' from The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath which I initially encountered printed in excerpt as a standalone short story.)

Thank you everybody, lots of people posted.

I will now close this thread and send out three invites (please check your inboxes) - if you don't get one, thanks for your interest, and I will bear you in mind for future CoC games I might run!
