Chapter 1: Festival & Fire

Grim gave a curt smile and slight chuckle at the orc's jest. He had heard the remark before about his weapon and it still irked him. Given his above average size for a halfling he found the maul a fitting weapon with it's similarly oversized build. And it certainly did the job when it came to smashing an orc's head. To be clear, orcs he previously fought on the battlefield, he had no quarrel with this one.

Chuckling, "Well, when your tiny knife and hands fail, let me know, and I'll be there to smash your enemies with this." gesturing at the maul strapped to his back.

Turning back to Katrina before taking off, "If you see your sister, let her know I'll be at the Hagfish."

Furmyr says:

Bart pockets the coins greedily. "He's the richest man in town or not far from it," Bart replies. "Owns and operates the glassworks. Lives up on the hill. Makin' a meetin' will be hard. But not impossible, so I'll get right on that."

"Though rumor has it he's taken ill, I figure it is just to avoid the festival right. He probably wouldn't want to socialize with the likes of us if you catch my drift."
"Hmmm... point me to the direction of his house, Bart. I will also need to do my investigation about him. Any other important person in this town, who could help me contact him? You go: trying to arrange a meeting your ways and I will try my ways. How much time do you need for your part? Where we will have our next meeting? If you will have a need to contact me earlier I'm currently staying at Hagfish. - despite the cheerful, relaxed atmosphere and the high temperatures surrounding them, Li was apparently ready for action and chasing the lead.

Hearing Bart's remark about Lonjiku's apparent disdain for the common folk, Li visibly grimaces:
"Every person deserves respect, some people just have to learn it the hard way. If given the opportunity, I will try to provide this lesson to our Very Important Figure." - the sarcasm at the end of last sentence was barely noticeable.

Saldrina and Wess

One of the dart players can't help but hear your question about the hagfish and drunkenly tries to explain. "You see, it's the hagfish challenge," he says. "You pay a silver and it goes in the pouch. Then you have to drink a tankard of water from the tank. If you finish it and keep it down the winnings is yours."

Chigaru and Grimwulf

Katrine Vinder
"5 silvers hon," Katrine tells you the price of the charm.

She turns her attention to Grimwulf with a smile. "Thanks for the warning. Will let her know to stay away," she says in jest.

Khel

Avstalar Zantus
"They would be the people to see then," Father Zantus confirms. "I wish you luck with your quest for knowledge."

"Now if you'll excuse me, I have a lot to do before the consecration at sundown," he passes you to move towards a small office off to the side. Before he reaches it, he turns to you. "It will be at sundown. Hope to see you here."

Li

Bart
Bart tells you the address for his house. "Will have a hell of a time to get through his servants. Though his daughter, Ameiko, runs the Rusty Dragon Inn, might be she can get you a meeting. Word on street is that there's bad blood between generations."
OOC:
If you look on the map of Sandpoint in the map thread, his house is numbered 49.
May 27, 2024 12:52 pm
Khel turned at the father and smiled, "Thanks again Father Zantus for your help and I will definitely be here on Sundown." He then moved to the room where Sarenrae's altar was present and kneeled down to pray, after offering a gold coin to the offering box. "I remain under your protection, Dawnflower; thank you for guiding me to my destination."
May 27, 2024 1:14 pm
"Smashing sounds so...messy." He turns back to the shopkeep and pays the five silver. "Well worth the price," he smiles politely. "No need to wrap it. I'll wear it now. Would you be kind enough to lend a hand?" When the necklace is on he admires himself in a small mirror by the counter. "I think it suits me well."

Chigaru turns back to the halfling. "The Hagfish? A place of ill repute, if you don't mind my bluntness. I find the Rusty Dragon more suitable. Lots of 'smashing' seems to happen at the Hagfish, as you might put it."
May 27, 2024 2:58 pm
Saldrina blanches visibly at the thought of drinking water from the hagfish tank. "I think I'll pass," she gulps.
May 27, 2024 6:55 pm
Wess says to the dart player; "How bad can it be? Is it not just fishy water? Have you tried this challenge my friend?" he ask the drunk man.
May 27, 2024 10:28 pm
Snorting at the orc as he looks himself over in the mirror, "To each their own, pretty boy. Lots of smashing happens a lot of places, at least the Hagfish offers games of chance as it's happening...in fact, I'm pretty sure I've seen you in that ill place rolling dice, no?"
OOC:
metagaming here, but saw that Chigaru has a d4 in gambling, has been in Sandpoint for several years, and the Hagfish is the only place for gambling, so assuming I've seen him there at some point. Nezzeraj, if you don't want to go that route, no worries.
May 27, 2024 11:01 pm
OOC:
Ha! Good eye. That came from his background of growing up on the streets, but I can roll with it!
Chigaru looks embarrassed for a second but then recovers. "Ah, yes, well...when I first arrived in Sandpoint I thought it best to experience everything it had to offer. I was unaware of the Hagfish's reputation so I had to experience that myself. And it is said that experience is the best teacher. I must admit I avoid frequenting the place to...stay away from any temptations of my past." He shrugs in a manner that says he would not like to dwell on the topic further.
May 28, 2024 3:59 am
"Fair enough." Grim says, nodding at Chigaru's explanation. "But if you feel like being less virtuous at any point, you're welcome to join me."

He takes his leave from the goods store and heads toward the the Hagfish, scarfing down a scrumptious sausage and rhubarb pie with a bottle of 'Gotrute' (with two dots over the u) - tm

Once in the establishment he takes a look around, nodding to the bartender, when his eyes lock upon a strangely dressed dwarf. He goes over to the table, briefly glancing at the halfling seated there, before falling back on the other occupant. "I see you took my advice. What say we go and play a game, your choice. Loser buys the table a drink."

OOC:
So I will assume that the meeting with Bart was around other side of the street where building 4 is. So going to the Rusty Dragon inn, Li can take a look inside the cathedral.
"Hmmm... Rusty Dragon Inn... it's a pity I didn't checked it before choosing the Hagfish than... but that is the price of being always in hurry. My gratitude, Bart for what you provided so far. You get me a meeting with Lonjiku Kaijitsu san and another 7 gold coins are yours. But you have to achieve this, before I will do it myself - of course. I will check how to get to Ameiko first, so instead you can try to help me with that, but doing part of the work myself, cause you are earning less. So maybe you can make some inquiries at the streets if there is a way to get into the Lonjiku Kaijitsu house or have a meeting with him in some other way? You know already where to find me." With a very short bow, Li departs towards south aiming at Cathedral entrance.
May 28, 2024 4:11 pm
The dart player immediately sits down, hoping this will make him part of the table and get him a free drink. "Of course I took your advice! Not going to argue with a guy what carries a hammer that size." He says with a kind chuckle. "My new friend here said something about a 'Hagfish challenge'. Are ya up for that?" He ask, raising an inquisitive eyebrow.
May 28, 2024 5:55 pm
The Hagfish

The drunk smiles at Wess. "Tried it once. Didn't finish. All I got from it was one silver less for proper drinks and ruined my nice shirt."

His friend laughs and puts a hand around his shoulder. "He threw up all over it. Only proves that you need to be proper drunk or stupid to even attempt."

Li & Khel

Bruno nods at Li, and sneaks back into the street to see what he can arrange.

Li arrives at the Cathedral just as Khel is leaving. In fact, it is just barely that Li is able to avoid crashing into another for the second time in an hour.

Saldrina smiles and silently thanks her teacher, who was, among other things, a biologist and once warned her about hagfish. Instead, she turns her attention to the competition between the newcomer and her tablemate. She is torn between rooting for her new friend or another halfling. Ultimately, she decides to remain silent and see who wins.

Luna was definitely late as she did her best to keep a brisk pace towards Sandpoint. She cursed herself for sleeping in, but alas, her dreams were so pleasant! Surely a small gift from her goddess, Desna.
Luna had begun her trek westward from Korvosa. It would have been better to have simply bought passage on a ship since both points were situated on the coast, but, where's the adventure in that? Besides, it was hard to lose her way since as she needed to do was basically follow the rivers!

As she made it into town, Luna could feel her stomach growling for sustenance; her throat begged for a drink. She knew it was certainly too late for the announcements that were to be at noon. She could smell the fresh pastries and other street treats. But something was at the front of her mind, somewhere she desired to visit first above all else: the cathedral!

People likely stared Luna's way as she walked with purpose to her destination. She was, after all, a tall
and muscular woman to begin with! Perhaps, more likely, the fact that her horns and ruby red skin betrayed her tiefling heritage.
Her armor was simple: a scale shirt, leather leggings and boots, and no helm. She always had a difficult time finding one that would accommodate her fiendish horns. She carried her shield on her backback as her longsword hung from her belt in its sheath.
People would perhaps also spot the holy symbol that hung from her neck and over her armor: that of a butterfly - that of Desna. She'd worshipped her for much of her life: she and one of her sisters. She had only a year ago finished her training to become a champion of Desna, so this was her largest adventure since.

She approached the cathedral determined, elated, and somewhat absentminded of all else.

Grim paused as the dwarf mentioned the actual hagfish. For some reason that had never crossed his mind. A foolish challenge, but glancing at the prize purse, bulging with coin, he thought of his own almost empty pockets. And he did say it was the dwarf's choice. And to be honest, he was still annoyed by the earlier jibe. He wasn't going to let this overdressed jester get the best of him.

Agreeing to the challenge, "Let's do it. Hope you have more of those fancy clothes available." Yelling to the barkeep over the din of the crowd, "Quinn, get Norah ready!"

Indeed almost bumping in another innocent visitor of Sandpoint Li shakes his head in gesture of wondering what is happening to him - could he really be already believing that he has found some proper lead of Misaki, this time, at least !? - says politely:
"Wha... my apologies good sir, I hope I didn't disturb your reverie... b-u-t since we're talking: haven't you seen a really massive half-orc in the area?" - while waiting for an answer, Li took a moment to look at the person he met. Then his innate curiosity of investigator, took over him and he added:
"I see that you don't come from this area either? The same applies to me. Did you come to Sandpoint on business, or are you intending to mainly enjoy the unique atmosphere of the festival taking place here?" - but Li's whole behaviour contradicted any interest of his in the festival taking place around them.

Li liked to work alone. But ever since Bart told him the latest news, his thoughts were racing like an arrow shot from the fiinest bow. And because he was primarily a practical man, he increasingly began to realize that to get to Lonjiku Kaijitsu he would need the help of others. And someone who comes from distant lands - like him - and has no ties to the local community seemed an interesting candidate to recruit for his cause, especially considering Li's limited budget.

Khel was walking with a slow gait, his eyes on the ground and his thoughts somewhere else. He almost bumped into another man but recovered quickly to apologise. "My pardon, sir; I didn't see you coming." Then he looked up and noticed the man carefully while listening to him. He stroked his beard and spoke, "Ah, an inquisitive and knowledgeable mind! Your assumption is true; I am not from here. I am a traveller from the distant nation Qadira. You . . . You also don't look like someone from here. If I may propose a guesswork, perhaps you are somewhere from the East?"

He then clapsed his hands behind his back and looked inquisitively at the person, "I do have a reason for visiting Sandpoint. My research and studies show that this place is linked with the ancient kingdoms of Varisia, records of which are a nascent treasure trove of arcane lore. I want to delve and study it more. Ah, sorry for the continuous talk, may I know your name, good Sir?"

The Hagfish

Jargie Quinn
Jargie smiles wide, and gets out two tankards, before he draws a small step stool from under the bar. He gets up on it and draws the tankard along the top of the tank, filling it with an unholy mixture of slime and water (water that probably hasn't been switched out as often as it should).

He puts it down on the bar with a heavy thud so some of it splashes on to the side. "Still man enough?"
OOC:
It will be a Vigor roll at -2 to drink and keep the stuff down. Anyone wanting to try can. Though first one to succeed gets the winnings, so mostly just bragging right for number 2 to succeed.
Sandpoint Cathedral

Li and Khel is having their conversation when Luna arrives on the scene.
OOC:
Once the "drinking competition" is finished I thought we could skip ahead a little.

"If I change my mind," he emphasizes. With the exchange over he gives the man a small bow and leaves for the cathedral. Chakra follows behind at his heels, wagging her little tail, tongue lolling out one side of her mouth. She's enjoying exploring the town during a festival with so many fresh new smells.
