Spay and McMillan are in the cramped cockpit, with the other five crammed into the mid-deck. Captain Belton is "jump master," seated in the forward left seat, with Halmet on his right. In the unlikely event of a bail-out using the Inflight Crew Escape System, Belton’s the one who blows the hatch and deploys the escape pole. Weintraub and O’Neil are in the rear seats, with Turner between them. Weintraub weeps as countdown proceeds, with O’Neil trying to comfort him.
Despite their titles of "pilot" and "commander", Spay and McMillan don't have much to do during liftoff as the promise is entirely automated. Unless something goes terribly wrong. Then it's up to Spay to decide if and when to abort, and which procedure to follow. Turner's job is to keep O'Neil and Weintraub safe during launch, which, she feels, has a high chance of not being an easy job at all.
