While Wandering the Wilds

Welcome to the story @dirtyglass,@Arrcher101

The forest around you grows dim as the sun gets lower on the horizon. As it is time to make camp you look around for a likely spot. The tall trees and occasional stream with scattered bushes gives plenty of cover but out here in the wilds bedding down for the night without precautions can be deadly.
OOC:
Whichever of you posts first set up a camp. Feel free to describe the area you "discover" and choose to make you camp. The second can come find the others campsite and join them for the night. You can add one or two other characters you may be traveling with, minstrel, tinker, trader, woodmen etc., but it should be reasonable for them to be out in the wilds away from any major trade route or settlement.
Jun 14, 2024 4:06 am
The waning sunlight casts long shadows through the dense woods as Dree emerges into a small clearing. A towering wall of smooth, grey stone dominates one side of the clearing. Worn by time and the elements, it offers a formidable windbreak and a sense of security. Moss and lichen cling to its surface, adding a touch of green to the cool stone.

Dree finds it a good place to rest for the night and builds, against the base of the outcrop, a small fire pit to set glowing with a welcoming warmth. A carefully chosen collection of firewood, gathered from the wood, she stacks nearby, promising a crackling fire throughout the cool night. A bed of soft pine needles, gathered with practiced hands, insulates the ground near the back of the outcrop.

The ground around the firepit shows only faint boot prints but the rest of the earth is undisturbed, speaking of a traveler who respects the forest floor and knows how to hide tracks. This campsite, with its natural stone haven, offers a sense of security and comfort.

Dree has been traveling alone thus far but is not a posed to company, she just hasn’t found any yet.

Dree is silent as she works to set up her camp the last thing she does is walk down to the nearby stream and gather some water to heat up her rations and make some tea.

While his face is inscrutable as usual, Serig's ears twitch in annoyance as the young man who followed and clung to him like a persistent tick continue to yap about the most inane things like his hope of being an adventurer—so much so that he's somewhat starting to regret saving this hapless guy from the pack of bandits that would've gutted him for his non-existent valuable belongings.

Well, whatever. He can leave him—Alben his name was—in the next town he comes across. But first, he has to find shelter now that the sun's starting to set. Hmmm... From what I recall there should be a glade nearby that's perfect for the night.

The two of them continue towards the clearing, but just right before they arrive there, Serig immediately clamped his thick paws onto Alben's mouth. "Quiet. There's someone else here." Alert, he sniffed the air, investigating, carefully prowling towards the glade. There's only one and it's a human... no, an elf?

Once they arrive, Serig scrutinizes the woman gathering water in the nearby stream. A fellow hunter from the looks of it. His guard relaxes, every so slightly, dropping the paw shutting Alben up. The other, of course, takes it as his cue to start talking again.

Alben
"Hello miss!" he said with a friendly wave. "Don't suppose we could share this shelter for the night? The name's Alben by the way, and he's Serig!"

The friendly and energetic young man glances around the camp. Are you alone? Isn't that dangerous? When I met Serig he was traveling alone as well so I asked to join him . You can travel with us too Where are you heading? I've just started adventuring but Serig seems better at the traveling the wilds than I and says I talk too much . . . Um . . blushing he falls silent and looks around for something else to talk about or do
Where's your tent? If you don't have one you can use mine tonight. . . .Um . . . I of corse will find other accomodations. and again blushes as he stammers it the last
Jun 15, 2024 4:12 am
Dree's heart starts to race as she sees the strangers aproch, she shifts her water skin to her non dominant hand, and she takes a cautious look around. 'Two might just be a distraction for more.' But she sees no sign of others, then the human opens his mouth and doesn't shut it, 'Quite the chatterbox.' She thinks and tries to hide a smile as he babbles on. I had a tent but it was... lost in the last town I visited. If you two gentlemen are looking for a camp and plan on being plesant, than I would welcome a bit of company. I was going to make tea, would you both like some?

If they accept, she will make everyone tea. She is welcoming but she is also cautious.

Serig notices the elven woman's vigilance and nods in thanks at her suggestion while glancing at Alben. "Thank you. That guy probably needs it with all the yapping he does."

Now, he's self-aware enough that he's not the best company at the best of times. Thankfully, Alben is here to liven things up, even if his incessant chatting is a bit tiring to keep up with. So he simply says, "Gonna look around for a bit," and walks out of the clearing to patrol its perimeter.

Serig doesn't expect any danger here, but he concentrates and sniffs the air with intent, taking in all the smells of the forest. Because of the elven woman's offer, he feels the need to reciprocate. Foraging for something edible would be enough. If we're lucky, there might even be some small game hanging around.

Alben shifts uncomfortably as Serig departs before looking around I'll . . uh . just set up the tent then? And tea would be great, thanks. Moving to do just that he finds a flat area, where Dree spread her bedding, and proceeds to clear the cluttering leaves and set up the oiled canvas tent. Apparently unable to stay silent only a shoult minute passes before he begins chattering again about his life in his village, being apprenticed to a smith but always wanting to go out and see more of the world until he forged his sword as his journeyman's work and then set out to try his hand at adventuring.

Meanwhile Dree has put enough water on to boil in her leather cooking pot. Seasons of using it for just such a task has let the flavor of the tea soak into the leather so the boiled water has a better taste than that of chewing on an old boot.

Serig moves around the camp and notes that the woman had already scouted the area before setting up camp and even picked a few local plant that are edible. He finds a few more berries and some edible plant growing in and near the stream that he knows mix well with some preserved meats to make a decent soup. By time he gets back the water is done boiling and he adds what he found to the cooking pot and hands over a portion of the berries to Dree.

With spring well and gone the night looks to be pleasant and with no signs of nearby major predators the camp should be safe for the night. The sounds and smell of the stream drift over the camp as the evenings insects flit about to with a few bats and birds swooping to feast on their bounty. The fire is allowed to dwindle low as you prepare for sleep.

Any preparations or arrangements before you go to sleep

Dree listens to Alben’s stories and thanks Serig for his finds with a smile. It’s quite nice to have company. Before bedding down on the bed she made Dree offers to the others, If we split the night up we could all sleep sound knowing someone is looking out. I can take first watch.
Jun 15, 2024 4:13 pm
Serig gives a curt nod and replies, "I'll take second watch right after you. I'll wake up Alben for third watch." Not that he's planning on doing the latter. Not only was Alben still wet behind his ears, Serig has long gotten used to not sleeping for long periods—less nightmares that way—so he might as well do third watch as well.

Finding a comfortable spot just a few steps away from the other two, Serig plops himself down and casually leans back to rest on the outcrop and closes his eyes to get some fitful rest.
Jun 15, 2024 6:27 pm
The night passes with no more event than Alben staying up late to chat with, or at, Dree for about an hour before retiring. In the morning you wake and break your fast and camp, cleaning your traces before preparing to move on. As None of you had a particular destination you make your way to an old and forgotten highway that Serig and Alben had notice the day before.

The highway is make of magically shaped stone slaps of a size and weight to make it last for centuries. Now covered is dust and errant weeks the road is often straight but at times curves and other sections are rent entirely, likely from the Shattering that ended the last age. By noon you reach the lip of a bluff that the road descends as it heads towards what looks to be the remains of city from the Dawn Age. As with most such relics of the age it is greatly damages and the wilderness has invaded it. Though the Shattering ended the Dawn Age and great war with the Immortals was less than a century ago all the ruins from that time are in such a state. A few cities were protected by the Gods, Titans, or greater Mortal powers and such are the seeds of modern countries. Looking down over you sprawling and dead city you doubt you are the first to find it but you see no signs of it being reclaimed and wonder what traced of the Mortal Peoples histories you might find therein. You see 3 great edifices that still tower over much of the city. A tower which is the ancient symbol of scholars and wizards that looks untouched, a massive pyramid that matches what you know of temples to the Deity worshiped before the birth of the Gods at the end of the first age, and what looks to have been a palace. The rest of the building are crumbling ruins long taken and broken down by plant and weather.
Which shall you explore? Tower, Temple, Palace?
Jun 15, 2024 6:55 pm
Just wanted to add that as the others sleep Dree took out a bit of wood and started carving a little bird to keep her hands busy on watch.

In play by post you should feel free to post big plans with specific detail. This lets the DM move things though minutia. However if you want a more detailed story then you can either go back and forth with smaller exact steps and DM responce or list multiple small steps with guidelines on when you might break off.
Retroactive actions that don't' impact the story are usually not an issue but that depends on the DM and other players.

Well gentleman, looks like we might need to look around a bit, anything calling out to either of you, or shall we flip a coin?
Jun 15, 2024 10:10 pm
The massive pyramid immediately catches Serig's attention—he's come across a few of them before in his travels. He's always explored them desperately hoping for something—an ancient artifact, long forgotten magics, anything that can help him uncover the details of his pack's slaughter and find their killer. He's always come out of them disappointed, but that hasn't really stopped him from getting tempted every time he comes across another one.

Serig takes a glance towards his current companions. While Dree seems competent enough to keep herself alive at the very least, Alben is a complete greenhorn. But his thirst for the truth—and for revenge—was too hard to pass up, and so he replies, "Let's go to the temple. I've been to a few of them before."
Jun 16, 2024 2:17 am
Dree notices Serig's cautious treatment of Alben, not having him take a watch and his seeming reluctance to take him into the ruins of the city, and decides to keep an extra eye on the man as well. Would you prefer to lead or take rear guard, Serig?
Jun 16, 2024 6:51 am
Serig narrows his eyes, staring at Dree. This woman is more perceptive than I thought. Still, he ignores it and replies, "I'll lead." and then points to Alben. "As for you, stay behind me. If you insist on coming with us, don't act like a reckless fool thinking you can fight just because you forged your own sword," he adds with a snort of contempt, recalling the pathetic way Alben attempted to deal with the bandits that tried to rob him.

As they were traversing the road towards the ruined city, Serig suddenly asks Dree, "You're a hunter as well, right? What's the most dangerous prey you've hunted?" Now that they're heading to potentially dangerous territory, he wants to gauge this elven woman's strength in detail more beyond his first impression.

Dree is quiet for a few minutes, one might think she wasn’t going to answer Serig’s question. Then quietly not to draw attention as they walk she says, The clan I grew up in didn’t much care for the fact that my mother was an elf. I never was exactly excluded but I never fit in really either, but I did have one friend, Lilly. She was sweet and kind to everyone and didn’t look over me when the other children played, she made sure I was invited too. Her parents owned the tavern and as we got older she helped in the kitchen sometimes. Two men from out of town got drunk and mad one night and killed Lilly and her parents. They are the first humans I hunted, and killed. I left our village soon after that.

Serig basks in silence, digesting the story Dree has told them. Even if he didn't want to, he finds in her a kindred spirit. But another part of him also burns with envy—how desperately he wished for his own problem to be so simple.

Finally he says, "Those men deserved it," and left it at that. It's too dangerous to get attached, and Serig already knows that at least Dree has experienced killing before. He wanted to leave it at that, and wait for Alben to go on his rambles yet again—Serig is getting used to it at this point—but one thing from Dree's story caught his attention.

"Is your father human?" he asked. Most of his knowledge of elves come from his pack's polite, if distant, elven neighbors in the forests he once lived in, and they, to put it lightly, did not get along with humans. The rest of his knowledge are from the few scattering of elven adventurers he had come across over the years of his wandering, and they were, for the most part, friendlier to humans. Since he's better at distinguishing his fellow beastfolk, it never crossed Serig's mind that those elven adventurers could in fact, have the same mixed heritage as Dree.
Jun 16, 2024 8:02 pm
Yes, my father is a human. After a short pause, He’s a very dedicated blacksmith. He didn’t like that I killed those men, he... It wasn't my job. He thinks I should keep my head down. Try and blend in more.

You chat back and forth as you move deeper into the city, heading towards the pyramid. You pass several tumbled ruins scattered to the left and right. Then you come to what must have been the city walls. The ring of stone reveals the walls must have stood at least 30 feet wide and twice as tall. The ruble across the traces of the road is lower and you work your way through it with little difficulty. However as you pass the midpoint of the wall you feel an odd sensation, as if dropping several feet when not expecting it. You all pause and look at each other to verify it is not just you. Looking around you see nothing amiss. Sensing no danger you press on.

The stillness of the abandoned city presses in on you as you move deeper. A deep and resounding sense of loss fills your hearts at the wonder of the glory the People possessed not even a century ago. Tumbled down shops and decimated residential areas give way to the larger central structures as you pick you way towards the pyramid. It rises well over 300 feet high with the bottom half covered in vines and small plants that have found purchase in the cracked stone. The lower sections appear completely ruined by by some miracle of divine intervention the typ looks to be intact and you see an ornate opening in this section with stairs leading down with the lower portions cracked and crumbling. Knowing the lower portions were often used for basic administrative and mundane functions you look to the peak and waiting archway to the intact higher temple chambers.

Serig's gaze flits upward at the temple's intact tip. "Looks like we've got quite the trek before us." While the stillness and weirdness of this ruined city unnerved him, the fervent desire to explore the place crawls like an itch under his skin. His gaze then turns toward his companions. "You guys ready?"

With Serig scouting the way and Dree searching for any more mobile dangers and Alben in the middle, you make you way up the steep stairs and cracked and broken stonework. At times the brush and vines overgrowing the pyramid help with convenient hand holds while at other times thich growth impedes your way. Seric picks out a path that stays close to the path and skirts a couple of sections that look more like the vegetation is holding it in place than the other way around.

After about 1/2 hour you reach the clear section you all feel flush as the blood pulses through your limbs due to the exertion. From this height you look out over the city and can see that though it has a couple large structures it is not a huge city. Within the walls there are a few other neighborhoods and individual structures that look to be still intact. Dree has not sensed anything stalking them but you have noted that there are some small animals in the area. The small biting flies prove most annoying and seem attracted to the three of you.

You pause for a short break in the last bit of shade to catch your breath before proceeding up the last of the stairs to the large open doorway above. These stairs are all intact and you walk up as Alben huffs and puffs as he mutters about the heat as you climb, totally exposed to the sun and anyone looking around, up to reach the large archway set back a bit into the top of the structure.

https://i.imgur.com/ErPFdL4.jpeg

Beyond the archway you see a massive chamber light by the sun's light, likely form windows higher on the sides of the pyramid. From what you can see there are likely several side chambers but all seems oddly clean for an open structure exposed to wind, rain, and sun.
Jun 18, 2024 9:00 am
The pristineness of their surroundings continue to unnerve Serig. He doesn't remember feeling this way from the similar temples he'd explored before. To distract himself for a bit, he turns towards his two companions. Dree, naturally, has easily kept up. Alben, while not as easily, managed as well, though not without his constant muttering. Still, he doesn't find it as annoying as before.

A fly lands on the side of the young man's head, just above his ear, and before Serig could react, he instinctively but gently swats the bug, smacking Alben in the process. Serig is silent for a moment before he awkwardly coughs and says, "There was a fly buzzing." Acting like the previous moment didn't happen, he continues, "You guys alright? Ready to go in?"
Jun 18, 2024 2:46 pm
Dree, who had been specifically watching for things to ‘hurt’ them had seen the fly and Serig’s automatic swat, clamps her hand over her mouth but can’t stop it. She bursts out laughing. She blushes, embarrassed to break into the serious mood they’ve had on their climb. Sor.. Sorry, she gets out, between bouts of laughter, it’s not that fun.. funny. Just been a bit.. Trying to put her ‘game face’ back on she pulls her axe out, Lead the way, Serig. She bites her lips shut when laughter threatens a second time.
Jun 19, 2024 1:03 am
Serig's ears flatten back in chagrin. He almost wants to growl and bare his fangs at Dree, especially when he can tell she's failing to not burst into laughter a second time, but doing that would even be more humiliating. So he bears with it, inspecting the archway and the chamber just beyond it for anything unusual instead right before walking in.

Examining the archway you find nothing of noteworthy. Figuring most traps would be on the inner chambers or vaults you move cautiously into the room. The large room has multiple high windows. Some are filled with translucent quartz while others are sloped down so that they allow air in but have not direct passage to the outside, likely to prevent rain and too much wind form entering. The walls are covered with murals carved into their surfaces from about knee height and above while a section about a foot high below these contains text, both in the high script and basic script.

In my setting few can actually read. There is however a "basic script" that uses ideograms and simple symbols that most understand at least a little. Test to read any base script

The room you entered is actually a large gallery, more like an indoor plaza, that goes around the entire perimeter of the pyramid and stretches up to high above you so it feels almost like open air . In the middle of this chamber is another temple. The three story building is another pyramid 60' to a side and 30' tall but lack a tip. It is covered in intricate carving and has large bronze doors on each side. Around the plaza/gallery there are multiple alcoves set into the outside wall that contain small alters, benches, tables, scultures, and other stonework items. The main area of the gallery is empty. Again the cleanliness of the area is brought to mind as the entire area is free of dust or other signs of the passage of time. As you look around you feel a peaceful felling settle over you. It is very gentle and subtle to the point you might have missed it were it not for the oppressive felling you felt in the city outside the temple.

Elprekt

You hear a faint humming echo through the chamber and draw back so you are in the enty passage. Peering into the gallery you try to trace the sound but the echos make this difficult and you almost miss the small figure moving from one alcove to the next in a slow and measured pace. The figure is average height for a human and wears dull tan robes and leather sandals. In their arms they hold a small basket and you see a few handles and cloth covered bundles sticking out of it.
Jun 19, 2024 11:13 am
Serig stares at the murals on the walls and the text right above it, trying to remember the little he know to read what the wall says. But since he rarely needs to read during his travels he gives up after a while and turns to the other two to say. "Can you two read this?"

Leaving Dree and Alben to that task, looks around some more. Serig's ears twitch when he hears the faint humming sound, his vigilance immediately rising. There's someone already here? When he sees the person in robes, he doesn't drop his guard but instead readies into a stance—slightly lowering his body as if bracing himself for a leap and raising both of his fists, not enough to be threatening, but enough to swiftly throw a punch if need be. "Hey! Who are you?" he shouts at the stranger.
Jun 19, 2024 3:39 pm
Dree studies the markings to try and read them but she, like Serig, has never really had need of reading as a hunter or helping her father in the forge.

When the old man shows himself and Serig calls out to him Dree will stand at his shoulder to back him up of the need arises. Though she does give him some space, knowing she made him angry earlier by laughing.

The elderly figure startles as they turn to face you. Upon seeing the trio she glares at Serig. What do you mean by shouting at me the the God's temple. Shame on you! Serig roll a save test. If you fail you feel intense shame at your actions and struck with fear and dread, like a little child being scolded at by their granny for tromping mud into the recently cleaned floor

Serig freezes just a little when he hears the old woman shout—it reminded him too much of his murdered grandfather, of the times when he scolded and corrected him for mistakes made during a hunt. If memories of his slaughtered pack coming up unbidden happened when he was younger, he surely would've spiraled into despair by now.

But the years have numbed his heart, and he has learned how to live with the pain. So he just snorts at the old woman's words, although he does relax his stance a little. He turns towards his companions and whispers, "This old woman seems to be pretty harmless, but be alert all the same."

Serig walks towards the old woman, close enough that they could have a conversation, but still keeping quite a bit of distance. He also doesn't take the invitation to sit, preferring to stand. "My name's Serig. The ones behind me are Dree and Alben," he starts, glancing towards his companions. "We've come across this ruined city by coincidence and thought it was worth exploring." Relaxed as he was, he still has his suspicions. "I apologize for shouting before. We just weren't expecting anybody to still be living in such an abandoned place."

Serig says:
We just weren't expecting anybody to still be living in such an abandoned place."
True enough. Most fled or died during the shattering and the rest left shortly thereafter. Only I stayed and were it not for the God I would surely have died. sigh But why come to the temple? Did you think it full of riches or such nonsense? Or did you come to pray and show your devotion? and she studies you with a piercing gaze.
Jun 20, 2024 9:43 pm
Serig snorts at Elprekt's question. He tried devoting himself to a God for a while when he was younger. Looking back now, he was glad he'd done it, if only for the people he met because of it. But it didn't really end well for him in the end, so he stopped.

Still, he wouldn't admit his reasons for choosing the temple towards this stranger."As I said, we're explorers, but not for any particular purpose. So if we find something then we find something. If not, we move on."

He throws back a question to Elprekt. "If most fled, why did you stay?" Serig was unsure what her reasons were. Surely it just can't be for devotion?

Creation -> Dawn Age ( all sentient life are the "People" and all worship their Deity) -> Dawn War between the People and Immortals from other Realms -> Shattering (the Mortal Realm was broken and the People split into the various races, kingdoms, nations, etc) Borders are a lingering effects of the Shattering, separating various lands and people, crossing them can be dangerous but they have been weakening lately
Elprekt

A sharp kackle fills the temple before she calms down I likely would have but I was quite young and my family died in the Shattering. I hid and by time I crawled out to try and find others there were none living to find. So I came to this temple and my god saved me so I choose to serve them. A look of sorrow fills her eyes at her brief retelling. But the past can not control us now. and she sits straighter and looks the three of you over Explorers eh? Would you perhaps be willing to help this old woman in a task for her god?
Jun 21, 2024 1:06 pm
Elprekt's words claws into Serig's most vulnerable spots, and he looks away in silence. After a few moments, he answers, gruffly, but with warmth so faint you could barely hear it if you strain. "Depends on the task. but we'll at least hear you out."

Elprekt

The ols priestess nods in satisfaction Good. Now there are actually 2 tasks but my Gods asks that you only perform one and that the other is for my next visitor. and shrugs.

I as sure you noticed the two other large structures in the town. The Tower and the Keep.

The Infinite Tower was a place of great learning before the war and has access to many records and artifacts from the Dawn age. If you choose the Tower I will give you instructions on how to enter and retrieve an item for me.

The Keep was the center of the civic and later military forces. It contains many everyday records as well as some materials and items useful in running the city and for military use. Similar to the tower I can instruct you how to access a portion of it where you will find a vault for which I hold the key. Bring me what the vault holds.

My instructions will help you navigate the facilities in relative safety but only in the path I need you to go. Should you leave the path I specify I can not guarantee your safety. But I am sure you will be able to pick up a few bits of valuable material or minor items from either. Anything not locked up and not in the rooms I will direct you to is yours for the taking. It is for the benefit of the people, whom you are descended from, so I see no reason for you to not take what you find.

What do you say?
and she look your trio over with a bit of trepidation.
Jun 22, 2024 5:14 pm
Serig listens carefully and commits Elprekt's words to memory. He hadn't expected that her god's task was this. He's definitely had the idea of checking those two other places after they've explored the temple before. Still, it's serendipitous, in a way, and he has no reason to reject the task.

"We'll go to the Infinite Tower," he says after a quick conversation with Dree and Alben. "What's the item you want retrieved?"
Jun 23, 2024 8:55 pm
Dree will sit across from the old woman and listen to her instructions intently. Before they leave for their task Dree will give the woman the little bird she carved the night before.

https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRXeF_Y1IhbCEeu9fel4BMNnZBQ2FR8hwf5SA&s Elprekt starts telling you how to enter the Infinite Tower and navigate the interior as she draws a rough map with some simple instructions onto a parchment she retrieves from another alcove. Once the directions are done she hands the parchment along with a pendant barely small enough to fit in your fist

Before you leave she instructs you not to not travel the city at night and you should, if possible, stay outside the city or in either the tower or pyramid.

Jun 24, 2024 9:16 am
Serig hands over the pendant to Dree for safekeeping. Even if Elprekt hadn't suggested it, he also thinks it would be safer to rest instead of traveling at night. They need all the rest they could get if they're going to tackle going somewhere potentially dangerous.
OOC:
I can't think of any other questions so I'm also good to go! Also welcome back Arrcher!
Jun 24, 2024 1:06 pm
Setting out you descent the pyramid, and wonder how often Elprekt does this trip, if at all. Once back to street level you head towards the tower. The city must have held a decent population as it's wide paved roads would easily have accommodated a couple wagons and still left room for people to walk.

You pass from one region of the city that surrounded the temple and had larger structures and streets to another with smaller buildings and roads that looks to have been a residential section. As you move through this area you enter a small plaza with a well anc cistern in the middle. As you do Serig catches a fresh scent. It smells reptilian but there is something . . wrong. Seeing her companion pause Dree scans the area ans notices there are drying sections of cobble stone. Something was drinking from here recently.
Jun 24, 2024 2:45 pm
After the warning about dangers in the city Dree will draw her blade. We're not alone, she whispers mostly for Albens benefit because Serig already knows. She also wants to see if she can tell the number or kind of beings from the tracks left.

Drake

Turning in that direction he catches movement from a shadowy doorway as a creature rushes from the coool interior of the building to rush at you. Serig snarls and bares his teeth at the Drake as it lashes at him with its tail. The damage inflicted on him brought clarity into his mind, and he subconsciously goes over all the hunting experience his pack had taught him. He breathes to steady himself and in retaliation, Serig brings his body low and closes in on the beast and tries to tackle and grapple it so the others can have a much easier time attacking it.
OOC:
Serig's first action is to try activating Shamanic Warrior subconsciously. If it succeeds and the random boon is 1/2/3 he'll burn 1 HP to get the Spirit Guide boon instead. But if it's 4/5/6 he doesn't sacrifice HP.

Serig easily dodges the Drake's tail and watches it as it flees. He waits until the beast has run far enough before turning his attention towards his two companions, and relief courses through him as he sees that they don't seem to have any injuries. Alben seems pretty shaken, although not as much as from when they first met, so that's an improvement. "We should hurry towards the tower before we come across any more beasts."
OOC:
Yeah I should've probably explained what I was trying to do whoops... But by grappling I essentially wanted to make it so the enemy would be easier to hit for the others, either maybe through giving them advantage or a lower DC for the next Attack or something similar.

As you continue on Serig rubs where the drakes tail slammed into him as it is still sore but other than that you are fine. As you near the tower and look up you realize you can not see the top as it stretches up to the clouds and beyond.

Moving closer you circle it until you spot a doorway on the east side but nowhere do you see any windows. The massive structure defies logic as it seems to reach beyond the heavens. At various points on the tower surface you see strange glows or glimmers of reflected light. The towers base is about 100 feet in diameter and the massive door is at least 30 feet across and 50 tall.

As you get near you feel increasing levels of magic. The towers looks be be a simple rough stone structure from a distance but as you near it you realize it is covered in carved and engraven murals depicting lands, creatures, and peoples. You soon realize not all the scenes depicted are of the mortal realm. There are scenes of vast oceans with impossibly vast creatures swallowing ships and dragons. Others show expanses of stars with beings riding vessels through the space between.

https://i.imgur.com/MWFgtVQ.jpeg

Now standing in front of the door you see it has two circles about 3 feet up on either side of a line down the middle. They give the impression of knocker plates. The door is made of an unknown material that vaguely resembles petrified wood. The door is set into a stone doorway that has been carves with a multitude of images of creatures, scenery, plant, and glyphs of all kinds. Above the door is a large paque with glowing runes that twist oddly yet all instantly gain an understanding of their meaning.

The Infinite Tower
Portal CVI.N4

By time you are close enough to touch the door the air and ground seem to humm with magical power. However even without touching the doors they begin gliding silently to the sides creating a gap between them. The gap is wider at the ground level and narrow at the top, as if the doors are swiveling to the side and up. The doors stop after creating a gap 8' wide at the base. The interior is pitch black after only a few feet. What you can see is simple stone floors. The light spilling through the open door does not touch any walls.

When the doors finish moving a gentle voice is head
Unknown individuals, welcome to the Infinite Tower. Please enter for evaluation.
A soft light suffuses the interior yet somehow reveals no additional details other than a pathway leading inwards.
Jun 27, 2024 1:42 am
According to your instructions you are to stop at the threshold and present the pendants and say "Agents of the Divine seek conference and access. Acknowledge" Then, and only when you hear and acknowledgement, are you to enter the Tower.
Jun 27, 2024 2:57 am
Serig had given the pendant to her so Dree steps up and holding it toward the door, Agents of the Divine seek conference and access. Acknowledge. Then bites her lip and holds very still awaiting a response.
Jun 27, 2024 8:05 am
As Dree says the words Serig stays silent as he readies himself just in case something comes out of the tower.
Jun 27, 2024 1:09 pm
After a short pause you hear a soft tone followed by Acknowledged . The interior slowly brightens to reveal a long and wide hallway, 20' x 60', with doors to either side and another set of double doors at the far end.

The odd thing is that according to your instructions you should be meet by someone after this happens but you see no one.
Jun 27, 2024 4:38 pm
Dree looks nervously to Serig, Do you think we should continue inside? Dree will put the pendent on so that it is visible but she can have her hands free to draw her weapon if need be.
Jun 28, 2024 11:10 pm
Tch, why does it look like we're still gonna end up exploring this place the dangerous way? Serig grumbles, slightly irritated that the old woman's instructions have already gone wrong. "Well, we're already here, we might as well," he says to the group, trying to mask his own unease with confidence. "Any of the doors speaking to any of you?"
OOC:
Not sure if this needs a roll, but I wanna ask if there's any information on which door to go to from Elprekt's instructions. Oh and I guess, any information on the person we're supposedly be meeting at the entrance too!
Jun 29, 2024 2:15 am
Elprekt did not know what the person would look like but was definitely expecting someone. Your instructions somewhat hinge on a guide but you do know you are to travel to a higher level. The instructions identifies it as "Private Vault space" and the pendant Dree holds along with instructions to access the Divine vault 3.

The side doors are all identical while the ones at the far end of the hall are different and larger, indicating they are either used more or more important.
Jun 29, 2024 3:31 am
Dree will step over the threshold and if that goes well say, We are looking for ‘Private Vault space, Devine Vault 3?’ to see if the voice from before has anything else to say.
Jun 29, 2024 9:42 am
Serig follows Dree through the threshold as well, and waits to see if the disembodied voice answers her. But he also tries knocking on the left side door to see if that would do anything.
Jun 29, 2024 3:35 pm
As Dree steps through a faint pulse if felt, hear, and seen in the room as if everything shook. As she speaks the voice is heard again. Please wait for an authorized tower agent. They have been notified of your arrival and will be with you momentarily.

You wait a while as Serig and Alben join Dree. After a couple minutes you hear another voice.

Stranger

Wait, wait a moment, I am coming. Please wait. The male voice states. It sounds sleepy, pleading, and slightly confused while trying to be professional. With not threats present and the door behind you still open, you decide not to venture too far from it for now, you wait several more minutes. Occasionally the mans voice is heard again thanking you for waiting and saying he is coming.

After 15 minutes of idly waiting you finally see a change. The doors at the far end of the hall open and a figure rushes through. A wizened old man in tattered clothes shuffles quickly towards you.
Stanimir

Thank the Deity someone finally came back! And you have a token, how lovely. He pants as he comes up to you and looks you over. How may I be of assistance? You said something about private Deity vault 3?

Now close enough to inspect you see a old human male that stands a bit above average height. His cloths are rumpled and ill fitting but look to have been high quality in their past. He stands somewhat nervously though he is trying to be formal, and keeps glancing at the door behind you with what looks to be a mix of longing and fear.
Jun 29, 2024 5:42 pm

Welcome Dree. Alphrekt, Elprekt? I do not recall that name. Then again I was not all that familiar with the cergy and likely there has been some changes to the outside world. Glancing out side he seems a bit shocked. Or perhaps a great many changes. What? Oh yes, I can definitely help you. You have the pendant and the tower recognizes it. Let me lead the way.

He glances out the doors again then turns to head back the way he came Follow me then. then suddenly stops and wheels around again. One of you should stay here. By the door. Don't try to leave the room. He glances between the three of you and the door nervously before resuming his progress to the inner door.

The thought of leaving Alben behind worries Serig a little, but he doesn't show it. He tells himself it would be safer here at the entrance, so he gently places a paw on the other guy's shoulders and curtly says, "Wait for us to get back, so take care of yourself. Don't get killed."

He then turns to follow the old man towards the tower's inner door.
Jun 30, 2024 2:53 am
To Alben,We’ll be back before you know it. To Serig, The priest said we’d be safe to sleep in the tower so I’m sure Alben will be fine here. She tries to smile reassuringly. She wants it to be true, Alben has been nothing but nice to her.

The old man reassures you that nothing in the tower will harm guests who follow its rules, and the lobby is especially
safe. He guides you to a magical platform slides in corkscrew fashion up and around the tower. You all get on and barely feel any motion as it begins passing floor after floor. As you wait to reach the vaults he introduces himself as Stanimir and rambles on about his job as a Acolyte for the Infinite Tower. You soon realize that he has been inside the tower since the Shattering and is quite lonely, and just a bit anxious about your arrival, though not you yourselves. Apparently the local Tower Portal Warden is in charge of this place but rarely interacts with Stanimir. Finally the platform stops and he guides you down a curving passage to stand before a door.

Stanimir

Just press the pendant to the door after I leave. When you finish your business just come back the platform when you are ready to leave. and he turns and leaves.

With nothing left to do you follow the instructions and press the pendant to the door that slides to the side silently. Inside the room you see a simple room with pedestals, box's, and racks. Each holds a single item.

Elprekt instructed pass through this room to a small door, press the pendant again to the door and take what is inside before returning. Moving through this hall you find the door and do as instructed. Inside you find a large metal orb covered in glowing runes and gemstones.
Jul 1, 2024 4:01 am
Looking around the first room with all the things Dree wonders, Elprekt said that things not in the room he was sending us to that weren’t locked up we could take to use, do you think on our way back out maybe a few of these things might be ok to take? She looks to Serig unsure if these would be the things Elprekt had referred to?
Jul 1, 2024 5:50 am
Serig ponders over Dree's question before nodding. "It probably is. I think we can take some after we get the thing Elprekt's asking for." He then shifts his attention toward the orb, trying to glean any information he can about it. "Since you have the pendant, you try taking the orb. But be careful."
Jul 1, 2024 5:37 pm
Dree will step up to the orb and slowly reach out to grab it, stopping if anything bad seems to be happening. If all goes well she’ll pick it up and turn back to Serig.
Jul 1, 2024 10:34 pm
At Dree's touch the orb begins to glow and hum a moment before the pendant responds in kind. The orb then reduces in size and is appearance shifts to a simple dull brass ball that, though heavy, Dree is able to lift with a single hand. As she does this you both feel words and knowledge enter your mind in a way you never experienced before.

Thank you Along with the words you gain knowledge that you may each take one item, a tool to ais in your development, from the hall you just passed through. Along with this knowledge is the assurance that Alben will receive a reward fitting with his desires. Returning to the room you see the pedestals and other containers have a small label identifying each item.

For the Arcanist's Gauntlet, Serig hovers his own palm on top of the gauntlet's, trying to see if he can feel if it's emanating magic or something. For the Camper's Respite, he puts a hand out and tests whether the flame is hot and/or magical. And because he couldn't resist his canine instinct, he tries to sniff at the Bounder's Ball, although he tries to do this without Dree noticing.

Serig can easily feel that all the items are magical but does not get any special reaction from the gauntlet. However you notice that the leather gauntlets do not look to be built for combat and are more like a gentleman's quality riding or cold weather gloves. Since this is a magical world I allow most magics to be easily "felt" by touch, taste, or similar senses as appropriate but it must be by contact.

The flame on the campers respite is warm and seems normal except it is not burning the staff. As you get close to examine it you notice what looks to be multiple thin ested rods embedded in it running its length from the tip to about 3/4 the way down. These look to be able to extend out. Think like an umbrella

The ball contains a variety of scents, people, metal, wood. As you sniff it a faint bit of dust makes you sneeze directly on it, however the ball does not move at all. Wow, what a great roll LoL. Good think this system doesn't do fumbles :)
Jul 2, 2024 3:56 pm
Dree will pick up the Peregrine Spear and examin it closely from tip to butt, then give it a few twirls and jabs. Replacing the Spear she will pick up the foxfire charm. Testing its weight and size she focuses on it trying to feel any difference in herself or the room. Finally, after replacing the charm she’ll pick up the Godsteal war gauntlets. She puts on the gauntlets and moves around a bit trying to figure out what they do.

Dree finds small feathers carved into the spear shaft and talons on teh spear head. She notes that while twirling it seems to swing too easily but and stable when she shifts her grip or tosses it though it unerringly lands back in her hand. When held it reacts normally.

The small foxhead charm smells faintly of soot and feels cool to the touch. As you hold it you feel a faint stirring. Not physically but, something else, as if being watched expectantly. The presence seems curious and intelligent.

The gauntlets are very sturdy and though moving does little you note that when you punch the wall you feel a slight tug as if you wanted to you coud punch harder.
Jul 3, 2024 4:55 pm
Dree will put the gauntlets back and tell Serig what she felt/noticed about the items, I.. I think I want to keep the charm if you don’t want it. She will wait to pick anything back up until Serig has chosen.
Jul 4, 2024 3:20 am
A little bashful and with ears slightly drooped down, Serig also shares with Dree the scant few info he gleaned from the items he examined. He then picks up the Godsteel Wargauntlets. "Seems like this'll help me fight better? I'll take this one then if you don't mind," he says. That said, he gives one last longing glance towards the Bounder's Ball.

Godsteel Gauntlets : Twice per hour you can release the energy stored within these metal gauntlets to damage what you strike. Creatures take 1 additional damage and objects must make a save test or a section of it is destroyed.

Foxfire Charm : Once per day by placing this item into a flame you release the spirit trapped within to act as your familiar.
Quote:

Familiars are usually benevolent spirits that have attached themselves to another living spirit. Familiars are umbral, but take the shape of a particular animal—typically no larger than a medium-sized dog—that is visible to anyone. Despite being able to be seen by anyone, familiars cannot speak, and instead communicate telepathically with their master. They have a movement of 30 feet and are able to remain manifested so long as they are within a 50-foot radius of their master.

Familiars are incorporeal to everything but their master, and as such, are unable to physically interact with other objects or individuals. That does not mean they are impervious to damage; when summoned, a familiar has 1 Hit Point, and can be damaged by magical effects. If a familiar’s Hit Points are reduced to 0, the familiar disappears and its master takes 1 point of damage. Summoning and unsummoning a familiar is considered free and does not require a Test. When summoned, the familiar will appear on or within 5 feet of its master.
As you leave the vault it closes behind you and you head back to the platform where Stanimir is to wait for you. However as you get near you see someone else there. The woman glares at you upon seeing you and snaps.

Serig vanishes in a flash of light as Dree cries out. Simultaneously the pendant glows and the woman instantly shrieks

Mary

No, no, no, no! Ah, its real?!?! Stanimir get back up here! and the woman continues ranting until the old fellow appears moment later looking around he seems alarmed and glances at the woman.

Stanimir

Warden Mary, excuse my impertinence but where is the other?

Mary

I didn't believe you, how could you possibly recognize a valid token? So I sent him through the trial of course. How was I to know it was real. You should have explained it better. Damn deity takes off and sends some one to get into there things years later, of course I am suspicious.

Dree listens in as Stanimir and Warden Mary, who does not come across as all together sane and is apparently much older than him though she looks younger, discuss what has transpired. Apparently Mary was in charge of this Tower Portal at the time of the Shattering and in here efforts to protect the Tower she was driven insane. Fortunately she is confined to the tower so Stanimir has been able to manage her. Unfortunately she sent Serig into the "Trials" but did so after shunting him to another Tower Portal so "I don't have to deal with him either way". Though she is unable, or unwilling(?), to bring him back she can send you to join him and Stanimir assures Dree is is in no danger but he has no idea where that Tower Portal may be located in the Mortal Realm.

Taking the orb Dree hurries back to the priestess to hand it off to her before returning to the tower to catch up to Serig as quickly as possible
OOC:

Serig can continue in the Infinite Tower thread
I will explain the situation in that thread but will not respond until next week.
Dree can ask question of the priestess and people in the tower before joining him there.

In a slight panic that Serig has been sent somewhere dangerous alone when she had promised to have his back, Dree asks her questions and gives her orders quickly and forcefully leaving no room for hesitation, finger pointing, or idle chatter.

Squaring up to the priestess, What are these trials, how do we defeat them, where will we be when they are finished? Giving her the orb, Give this to Alben, let him stay here to rest the night and let him get safely back to the temple. His safety is your charge now that you have separated him from Serig.

With assurance of her requests/ orders will be followed, Now if you have no further help to offer, send me to Serig.

The priestess informs you the trials are a means used to measure the strengths and weaknesses of the people. Though they shifted more towards combat evaluations during the Dawn War they can cover a wide range of situations either through simple puzzles, illusions, or even transporting testees to other planes. As this is the first time you will be taking the test it is unlikely that you will be in danger.

She agrees to help Alben and is obviously quite excited to see the orb. She helps you top of your supplies before you return to the Tower. Back to the tower you are quickly escorted to a side chamber by an apologetic Stanimir and glowering Mary. Stepping through ....
