"What? No, no, not at all." Theo hastens to assure you. "I don't think you're weird! I think you're amazing!" His brain catches up with his mouth and he blushes red enough that you can see it in the dark.

"...I mean... how you handled... that way you..." He does not seem to be able to mention or even look at Daryl, and you get the strong impression he desperately wants to ask how he help you right now, but he is also keeping his distance, half in and half out of the shelter, getting half-rained-on.

"Oh... Okay... Good..."

Ezme turns her face away from Theo, very careful to keep her expression neutral, but something in her stomach flips in synchrony with the false assumption now turned on its head. He admired her? Really??

The last time she had believed a boy liked her, it had turned out to be a cruel hoax... Might Daryl have goaded Theo, challenged him to take me on, just as Danfer and Eurick had done with Aarov? Staring at Daryl's still form, Ezme had a hard time believing him capable of such. Frankly, she had a hard time imagining Theo agreeing to something like that, either. But that would mean...

Not right now.

Ezme shoves all of these thoughts/feelings/memories back into the far corner of her mind where they belonged and turns her attention to the more pressing matter at hand: helping her companions and keeping them safe. She turns back to Theo.

"If you do not think me weird, then step in out of rain. You are getting all wet." Still hugging the blankets tightly about her, she gestures with her chin for him to come closer.

Theo looks pointedly around the small tent, filled beyond capacity by five people, four of them comatose. It is either him or one of the cold-people getting wet.

"Only on the outside." He says, which might be an attempt to make a joke ... in imitation of how you keep casually throwing around jokes that other people get before he does?

Not expecting the humor, Ezme blinks at Theo with confusion before realization dawns. A small, amused smile creeps onto her face before she shakes her head and rises to her feet. She reaches out and grabs him by the elbow. "Come here, you." She pulls him to her side, tossing her blanket over his shoulders, as well, to help shield him from the rain. As long as they are both standing, there is room for them together (mostly) under the tarp.... With any luck, the rain would cease soon....

Sharing the blanket forces Ezme to be no longer fully wrapped in it, but at least Theo's shoulder is warm next to her, and her shivering is starting to quiet down.

Theo stands as stiff as a pole, his hands clamped to his sides. He does not know where to look and does not dare move. He opens his mouth once or twice, as if to talk, but no words come out. You can feel his temperature rising, this is definitely a good way to warm up.

"You are warm... That helps..." Ezme comments, hoping to mask the awkwardness of the moment.

When he continues to stand there stiff and wordless, she lets out a long, shaky exhale through pursed lips, her mind grasping for ways to ease the tension. Finally, she speaks:

"When I was very little, I had silly argument with my mother. It was winter. I thought if other animals can survive without fire or houses or clothing -- that surely there was way for people to do it too. I wanted to explore how it could be done, but my mother refused to let me outside, as it was very cold that day. She took my boots away and put them out of reach. But I was angry and determined and went ahead and marched outside in just socks. She watched me go out into the drifts and thought, 'Oh well, she will be back in two.' ... Ended up curled up on boulder with slightly less snow on it, risking frostbite, refusing to go back inside and admit defeat...." Ezme closes her eyes, huffing a single self-deprecating laugh through her nose. She shakes her head, her smile fading, then opens her eyes again, her expression growing serious as she finishes the story. "My father had just come home. He had to put all his gear back on to come out and collect me..." She rolls her eyes in a manner which suggests that her father was not at all pleased about this development and that she'd never lived this down. She sighs, staring off into the night. "My mother would tell and retell this story. It was all the proof she needed that I was bullheaded from the start...."

She turns to look at Theo, studying his face. "... Do you get on well with your parents?"

"Ha." Theo lets out a little laugh at your final question. "My father's an ass. I used to idolise him when I was younger... and also older then I care to admit." He sighs sadly and you feel some of the ramrod-tension leak out of him as he is distracted by the memory.

"I had to go out into the world to see how bad he was making things in the valley." Theo's father was the mayor of a village, central to a small farming valley's economy, he seems to assume you know this, mainly because he has spent his whole life with everyone knowing who his father is.

"He treated my sister like nothing more than a pet, just because she was a girl." He admits. "It wasn't just him, mind. Everyone though that way. It is amazing that thing you spoke of, with how you were raised. My sister dressed up like a boy and came with me and Daryl when we joined these heroes." He shakes his head in shame at the next part. "We had such a... a warped idea of what 'heroes' were for and what needed to be done, but she knew something had to change."

He does not go into any details about what happened on that adventure with his disguised sister, skipping over the possibly-traumatic events. "She stayed behind, planning on taking charge of the village and changing things. I thought it was a brilliant idea —no doubt she would make a good leader— but now I am worried that no one will take her seriously and everyone will just fall in behind my father again." You can hear the frustration in his voice at this idea. He does not know what he can do about it, though.

Ezmaray frowns curiously. "Are you not his heir? ... Do you not want to take over?"
Jul 6, 2024 11:15 pm
"I always assumed I would." Theo admits, almost shrugging but immediately stopping any movement. "But it should not be that way. Just because my father was in charge does not mean I would make a good leader... especially when my father was a bad leader. Anyway, the people are supposed to choose who they want as mayor, my father convinced them otherwise. If my sister can convince them to accept her everything will be better, but I don't know what my father will do."

He contemplates the idea for a while before saying. "I don't think I would make a good leader. But I don't know. That is why I want to learn about the world. But it is darker than I thought it would be."

Glancing at her unconscious companions, Ezme suddenly realizes how dumb her question may have been. All the same, she gives Theo a chance to speak for himself.

"Well, yeah." Theo agrees. "And the bees, and the bear, and Humphrey turning out to be rotter. And the women..." He breaks off, clearly not wanting to talk about 'the women'.

Ezme's eyes dart off to the side and back. "Are the women... so... terrible here?" she asks haltingly.
Jul 7, 2024 2:50 am
Lost as he is in his own memories, Theo misses the implication. "Some women can be pretty bad. As bad as men. Maybe worse since they are, you know, women." He sighs. "Sometime life can be so very disappointing."

Ezmaray is confused. This was some serious mixed messaging. "Why would being women make them worse...?"
Jul 7, 2024 3:14 am
"I suppose it shouldn't, really." Theo speculates. "If they are going to be equal, then they should be allowed to be equally as bad as men. I suppose I am old fashioned and just don't expect women to do certain things? Didn't you say that, when you grew up," Here he hesitates, suddenly being reminded of his proximity. "That you had to start 'living as a women' all of a sudden? Without the proper training? My sister would love that."

Love it??

"It was... rather... jarring," Ezme says, her brow furrowing with the memory. Her shoulders hunch slightly, and she turns her face away.
Jul 7, 2024 2:50 pm
"I can imaging it was." Theo say, looking at your —close-up— face for the first time. "I feel bad about leaving my sister to deal with the 'jarringness' of her new situation."

You can see that the guilt of leaving her back at home is eating at him, but you don't know fully why he left.
It is probable that the sarcasm of 'she would love it' is missed during the idiomatic translation.

You are feeling all warm by now.

Ezme turns back to Theo as he says this, taking in his regretful expression. For a moment their eyes meet. She notices for the first time that his are a warm, honey brown. Everyone in her family had some shade of blue. This was different...

Ezme feels quite warm now, but for a moment, as their eyes lock, her mind goes blank and time seems to freeze as still as Theo.

The trapper clears her throat and breaks the shared gaze as she eases out from under the blanket. "...Your sister will be fine," she manages to say. "Strong woman cannot depend on men to protect her, not if she is to change the world's mind about her sex."

Trying to hide her own confusion and discomfort, Ezme redirects their focus, stepping away and toward their companions. "I should check Lille," she says, unwrapping the hide blanket that enfolded both the wood nymph and Roald. She puts a hand to Lille's forehead and extremities. "She is chill, but not as bad as Daryl was."

Ezme observes that Lille and Roald's eyes both move rapidly behind their lids. They are clearly experiencing some sort of hallucination. She rolls both companions onto their sides so she can check on their venom pools. As she does so, Lille mumbles something in her sleep: "Roald..."

Hmm... Ezme checks the back of their necks. Her brows raise with surprise; she waves Theo over.

"Would you look at this? The venom on both of their necks has formed same image! Is that ... Is that some sort of dagger??" She shares a look with Theo, then dashes over to Albert to check him.

Theo startles when you mention his sister and sex. "She doesn't... Oh, right." He says, realising the other meanings of the word. "You are right. She needs to fight that battle herself. I can not hand emancipation to her."

He seems highly relieved when you break contact and finally relaxes and starts to breath again. After a moment of recovery he leans over and looks where you are pointing. "I don't know." He says, wanting to agree with you, but unconvinced about the dagger image, let alone what that could mean.

"Do you think they are ... connected?"
