Roald walks out of the room in the direction the woman indicated. He passes a small kitchen, there is some food on the counter but it's mostly turnips.
Let's hope the woman has a larder somewhere
There is a door in the kitchen barred with a wooden plank, Roald removes the bar with ease.
He opens the creaky backdoor, the hinges are rusted and the door is crooked.
In the small backyard there is no sign of a well, but in the distance he does see a stone circle, he walks over through neighbouring gardens. There are more vegetables to be seen but there is an absence of animals. A few chickens, a cat,... But no livestock, no horses,...
The water is clear, he fills the pitcher by letting it down with the rope.
no bucket?
It tastes sweet and refreshing. Roald refills the pitcher before going back into the house.

'' Could you tell us some more about this village? he asks the old lady.

"I meant payment. Coins?" Albert looks puzzled that the woman would not have realized that. He takes a sip. The ale has a bit of a sour after taste, but other wise it's a fine drink. Especially after their long hikes the past few days. "May I?" He asks, gesturing to a stool before sitting down with the lady's permission.

He listens with interest as she answers Roald's question.

"What's a 'house felder'?" One of the fence builders asks, puzzled by your strange introduction. "Do you do windows?"

Theo suppresses a giggle, he is trying to be chipper and friendly with you now that Daryl took that awkwardness away, but he seems to have a massive amount of awkwardness of his own. With the others he is just a little moody, the tension seems to only be with Daryl and yourself, but you may not have noticed this distinction, since you are not always privy to the way he behaves when you are not around.

One of the men holds his arms open and the girl leaps into them in a big hug, the puppy bounding all around. "I see you have met Emaline." He says.

"I am not Emaline" Emaline says. "I am 'Lion'!"

"Of course you are. Little lion." Her father says affectionately, tossing her in the air and catching her again.

Emaline does not mention the invitation to stay with them. In her mind it is already settled.

"Coin? For ale?" The woman sounds genuinely puzzled by this concept. "What use have I for coins, coins don't fix the door or the roof. And the ale must be drunk."

She seems content with the village. It is simple, and definitely needs some work, but she does not seem to consider the rundown state to be a source of much worry. "There is never enough time to get to all the jobs." She observes wisely.

What do you ask? What does she answer?

Ezme casts Theo a peeved smirk in response to his snicker.

"No... 'House...' As in-- " she starts to answer the man, but she loses her train of thought upon hearing the father's term of endearment for his little girl. Her gaze wanders their direction as her mind quickly recedes into memory.

She shakes herself, trying to force her attention back to the other fence builder. "... We are delivery crew, looking for lodging as we pass through town...." she manages to explain, a bit flustered.

Lille is confused by all the small talk but looks relieved when Ezme finally gets to the point. "We can trade work for food, and possibly a place to sleep," she offers, picking up from where the trapper inexplicably foundered. "Or trade some of those bits of metal.... Coins," she adds proudly, upon recollection of the right word.

"Delivering? Through here?" The little Lion's father —who introduced himself as Tomaž— seems mildly surprised. "To the army, I suppose?" He speculates, suggesting some association or importance to/about the army for this village.

"Yes. Of course." Tomaž says when you suggest working for food and lodging. He does not say it, but there is a hint of 'obviously' tacked on. "Didn't Em... er... Lion offer to sort you out."

"I did!" Emaline protests. "But there are ..." she counts on her fingers, "... six of them. And I told them our house was too small for all of them."

"Well done." Tomaž praises his daughter before turning to you. "Er... did you want to help with the fence before getting settled in?" He asks, wondering why you out here.

The village seems very polite and accommodating.

"Army?" Lille inquires, looking confused. "I wanted to ask about the zom-bees. She didn’t seem to know what they are or do, or how you keep safe from them." She gestures to the girl named Lion, currently having her hand licked by the affectionate dog.

"Zombies?" Tomaž says. "Children's stories. Anyway, the army keeps such foreign riff-raff out." It is a bit of a contradiction whether they are 'children's stories' or actually something the army deals with.

"Ah..."

Being a foreigner, herself, Ezme isn't entirely sure what to make of that characterization, but the man seems welcoming enough. Eager to prove her usefulness (and choosing to ignore her exhaustion), Ezmaray thanks Tomaž for the lodging and and offers to help with the fence right away. Consequently, she feels utterly wiped out by dusk. Before entering the house, she rests on a stump under a large maple tree and attempts to take another swig of water, only to confirm that her water skin is completely dry. She lets out a long exhale.

Lille is nearby. An unspoken question hovers around the trapper. She'd been trying to gauge when the timing was right, waiting until they had a moment of relative privacy. Now that moment had arrived. She makes eye contact with the druid girl.

"Your parents.... Did you ever know them?" the trapper asks.
Oct 24, 2024 2:01 pm
"Well, we could help with that too." Albert offers after the lady talks about jobs around the house. "We're not scared of a little work." He sips the ale, puts it down and walks over to the door. "Let's see if we can stop this one from getting stuck." He takes a good look at the hinges and the sides of the door, trying to figure out where it's gripping the wall or floor.

"Looks like the issue is at the bottom here." He says after a while. "Do you have a hammer and some kind of wedge?"

''Do you get many travellers passing through? Why is there no livestock? Or none that I've seen,... are they maybe in a pasture down the road? Do you live alone here? ''
OOC:
after the interrogation
'' Oh yes we could really try and fix that door, good idea Albert ''
Roald tries to lift the door but the gap on the top is too narrow. The edge of the wood started to rot and became thicker. Roald uses his knife to scrape away the problematic parts.

The men are a little surprised, both by you jumping straight to work before resting and by your sheer physicality. Mending fences is not Theo's strong suit (in more ways than one, it seems), and his soft hands are soon bruised and bleeding, but he glares at anyone who suggests he find some other work more suited to his skills. Do you push the issue?

What they planned as a three-day job is completed by evening. The fence is not really all that sturdy, but everyone assures you that this is not your fault —"The army take all the good wood, you know how it is."— and you don't see any animals that would be kept in by the fence anyway.

It turns out there was a barrel of water near the work-site, but everyone seemed a bit intimidated by you, and you keeping your gear near and drinking from your supply lead them to believe you wanted it that way. There is a well in the center of town —in what might pass for a town square— and a few more wells in the fields behind the houses, you could help yourself, or your sigh might induce someone to offer you water or ale.

One of the village children who have gathered to gawk at the newcomers is sent to fetch the tools you need, and between the you you are able to fix the door, and the wonky step that would otherwise have been bound to break an old woman's leg.

Daryl has stripped off his armour —the kids were immensely disappointed to discover he is just a person inside— and proves fairly adept at the task.

"Not that many travellers, these days." Hilda (for that is your old woman's name) answers. "I remember when there use to troves of them." (She probably means 'droves', though otherwise this village seems oddly well-educated.) "Not much call for it anymore. Where would one go?

"Where are you lads headed, anyway?" She asks in passing.

"The army takes all the livestock. Even before they are fully grown, these days." She complains. "Then there is nothing left breed with, but they don't seem to understand why we can't just 'get more'." She sighs.

"Alone? No." She says, indicating all the kids who have come to spectate, and probably including the people you saw in the fields out back. While her house as been neglected, you don't get the impression that the village would let their old people come to harm.

By evening people are gathering in the town square to meet and greet your party. If you are paying attention, you might notice a large age gap, most of the people are either children or old people, Tomas is one of the few people who do not cleanly fit that division.

Tables are set up, a fire lit, and food brought out to share. Everyone brings something, and you don't see any sign of people holding back nor evident resentment about sharing everything they have. Nonetheless the fare is simple and lacking in many aspects.

Do you have anything to contribute to the shared meal? Anything you kept from hunting and gathering along the way will only make a small dent for this village of 30+, and you don't know if contributing would be considered rude.

"We're on our way to uh... the border." Albert says. "We're delivering some things there."

He's a bit worried when he hears the word 'army' "The army? They come here often?"

"We are the last stop before the border." Hila says. "So the army pass through all the time. They keep us safe." You get the impression that she is not saying 'but they take what they need', as this would be unpatriotic.

If she noticed your stumble she still seems to assume you are delivering to the army, and not planning on going past the border. No one has said you can't, but you don't get the impression that crossing is common, this impression bears out the attitude of everyone else so far, including the post office.

Ezme is used to being an outsider and is unperturbed by the men keeping their distance.

In response to Theo’s beat up hands, she simply nods approvingly and says supportively, "Look on each hardened hand here and know this: behind every rough callus is soft, virgin skin that once wept in protest. We all grow and change. Sometimes it is painful. But you do well not to let them pigeon hole you."
Oct 25, 2024 11:09 am
Lille seems uncertain about the whole army concept that Tomaž keeps mentioning. When Ezme decides to start work on the fence directly, Lille nods her agreement. "I think we will need to speak more about things here, so we’d best get the work done sooner." At Theo’s first grimace of pain, she tries to suggest that he go tell the others where they are. His refusals bring only a shrug in response, but Lille does start to notice the way he periodically glances towards Ezme, and glows with pride at her comment.

While it is strange, his behavior is mostly forgotten by the time they are resting from their productive toil. Lille had readily helped herself to the water barrel after the men refreshed themselves. She leans over and passes her full wooden bowl to Ezme, before settling back to ponder her question.

"I don’t know," she answers slowly. "I was young, maybe four or five, when I came to Jordash, and don’t remember much from before. There was one woman whose face I almost remember... but she wasn’t my mother. My parents were.. somewhere else a lot." Lille gazes unseeing into the distance, struggling to pull the fuzzy memories into focus.

"I was with her, that woman, one night when there was a storm." Her voice falters at the end and she winces. "It was terrible, she whispers in horror. "The horses, so much screaming, and the noise..." She shudders, despite the warm afternoon and recent exertion. "I just ran and ran. Then I found the wolves and lived with them a while. Jordash found me that fall. A good thing too, since it was getting cold and my clothes were muddy shreds. And I lived with him after that," she concludes, returning her focus to the present time.

The trapper gratefully accepts Lille's offering of water and gulps it down as she listens intently to the girl's story. She frowns as Lille finishes her tale. There was a lot to unpack there. Was Ezme really supposed to believe a human child survived with the aid of wolves?? Had the lonely girl possibly gone delusional following the trauma of losing her family?

She chooses to ignore that for now, focusing instead on hearing the complete narrative from Lille's perspective.

"And this Jordash... He was some sort of..." Ezme pauses, her eyes darting up and to the left. "How do you say 'nazítjak'...?" She looks back at Lille. "Man who lives alone...? Helmet!! --No..." Her jaw clenches with annoyance at her own exhausted brain's meltdown. "Like monk."
