Diverted from The Fellowship Grows, the Journey Continues

- Lille, Roald, Albert -

You are sitting watch, the others are sleeping peacefully. If you have little experience on watch you may be staring into the coals of the fire, which is burning low, the world around you dark and unseen. If you have more experience you will have the fire, and its light, to your back. Clouds cover the moon and it is dark in the quiet forest.

You don't know what time it is, but you are thinking your shift is not yet over when you hear the jingle of tackle, the rumble of many cart wheels, and sounds of people talking.

"Let's set up here for the night." A voice calls, and not far from you camp you see a caravan of covered wagons pull up on the road and start to erect large tents and other strange contraptions.

Somehow you just know there is no need to wake your companions, they will be fine, but you have to check out this attraction, it looks like a carnival or circus.

Albert looks behind him. Everyone is sound asleep. They'll be fine for a few minutes. He concludes and gets up to go and have a look at the group that has taken up a spot near them. I'll just check them out from behind a tree first. It's unlikely they'll see me in this darkness.

Now a bit closer, he can see a few wagons. Though, just as he's hidden to them, it's hard to see more than some moving shapes. He decides to wait and watch for a minute or two.

Lille has the fire well banked, and has been moving to different spots around the campsite every so often. The repositioning not only helps keep her awake, but lets her see and hear the surrounding woods from different angles. The sudden intrusion of noise into the otherwise quiet night sets her on high alert, crouched by a bush with one hand clenched on her staff and the other hovering over her knife at her waist.

As the sounds and sights evolve, Lille watches with tense curiosity. I will NOT wake them this time, she resolves to herself. I will deal with this myself. With a last glance at the group’s sleeping forms, she slips forward between the trees, silently flitting to each new bit of cover when the right noise or action happens to cover her movement.

The carnies string up lights overhead and illuminate the clearing with dancing shadows. Someone sets up a booth and starts welcoming kids and grownups as they show up. You don't see any money changing hands.

You smell a smell that sends you right back to your childhood. What is it?

You are easily able to move right up to and even into the clearing among the wagons and stalls. You don't think anyone is paying any attention anyway, so you could probably walk through without a care.

You have never seen anything like this before. All the lights and the colours and the sounds! There are games and fascinating food-stuffs on display and everything looks interesting and new. Jordash left you a little money, you may not be fully sure how it works, and you can't seem to see how people are paying for anything if they are.

Lille lurks in the shadow of a tent, gazing in awe at the spectacle around her. Where did all these people come from? Her query is lost amid the new sensations that flood her mind. She leans low, preparing to scuttle on all fours to another shadowed spot but then stops. No, I am an adventurer now. I will face this like they would. She straightens, squares her slender shoulders, and marches around the front of the tent to the first fair worker she can find. "What is all this?" She plants her staff firmly with one hand and manages not to twitch from the gaze and proximity of so many people. But old habits die hard, so she also tries to surreptitiously peek into the tent opening.

At first you think you are approaching a child, but as you draw near enough you see they much older, their face, as they look up at you, lightly wrinkled with wiry, bright orange hairs sticking out from their chin. They turn vividly blue eye to you and smile friendlily.

"Why, tis the great Carnevale!" They declare. "None like it in the land! Here you will see sights to curl your toes and whither your shins... if that direction takes your fancy."

They see you trying to catch a peek inside the tent and smile even wider. "Oh! You think you have the stomach for that, do ye? A frightful sight!"

Roald turns his head to locate the origin of the voice. He sees lights in the distance, growing in number.
"Albert, Albert" He whispers his name not to wake up anyone else.

When Albert doesn't react he thinks it through
Everyone has had a rough day, maybe it's better if I just let them sleep.

Roald stands up, hesitates for a moment while looking at the sleeping bodies, and walks towards the light reassured they will be fine. No one would rob them when there is such a large crowd right next to them. Right?

He tries to stay in the shadows as much as possible. More and more lights come into view as he creeps closer. And the sounds,... the noise... people shouting, laughing,... what is this?

The bright lights make the shadows even darker and more prominent. You can easily hide in them and no one pays you any attention.

This looks like a carnival. They used to pass through your hometown most years, telling wild tales of far off places and strange people. There were all sorts of attractions and ways to get into trouble or lose all ones' coin, but they were considered 'generally good fun'.

This looks bigger than any carnival you have ever seen or heard of, you can't see how far it stretches in either direction out of sight.

Did you go to the carnival as a kid? Or later in life? What did you enjoy the most?

Albert watches as the people show up to the booth to enter the tents. What is going on here? Albert thinks. A show at this time of night? Kids showing up? They should be in bed. And we're not close to any village as far as I know. A whiff of manure reaches his nose, reminding him of his childhood. Back when he lived with his parents next to the village stables. They must have horses here, or some kind of animal at least. Perhaps this carnival had more exotic animals. It did kind of excite Albert in a way. But still the oddity of the timing made him think twice about approaching.

"Hey Albert! Are you awake?" One of the people at the booth seems to say to a person who just arrived. He's surprised to hear his own name until he realizes it's not aimed at him. Must be a regular. The man mumbles something back and heads on inside.
Over on the other side, where some setup is still being done. One of the carnies tells another "We will unstake the tent here and here and use rope to re-tie to those tree branches."

Albert decides to go and check out the back. Perhaps he can get a view inside that will give him a better idea of what this is before he tries to talk to anyone. They seem to be making a lot of noise, which might wake up his companions and they need their rest. Somebody should probably have a word with them.

They are bringing all the horses that pulled the wagons around to the back of the tent, but the horses are upset about the bear in a cage, and they don't want to pass it to the corral. "What is that thing doing there?!" A hostler demands angrily. "Albert! Albert! Is this your < bleeping > bear!" He shouts in your general direction.

The bear looks morose, it sits in its cage and stares at you. A very human-like expression of sad confusion on its face.

Albert looks left and right to see if that other Albert person is anywhere in sight. However, he seems to be alone here. After waiting a few moments in silence, he steps forward. "Are you talking to me? Do I know you?"

"You Albert?" The hostler calls. "The bear is a problem. It is not meant to be here. Do something about it."

Albert looks at the bear, then at the hostler, then at the bear again, then back to the hostler. "This isn't my bear." He sounds confused. "Why do you think I should do something about it? I'm a bartender, not a bear wrangler."

He checks behind him. The light of the campfire can no longer be seen with the light coming from the caravan. He can't help but worry about his companions a bit. Hopefully they are still ok. He could go get Lille, she's got experience with bears.

"I know someone who's good with bears, though. We could help you out." An opportunistic thought enters his mind. "For a fee."

"You're a beer tender, not a bear tender?" The hostler asks. "Why'd you answer then if you can't help. WHERE'S < BLEEPING > ALBERT!" He bellows, making the horses rear and whinny.

Roald stands in awe at the sight of such a large Carnival. He remembers when the carnival used to come to his village, not a big one like this, just a wagon of 10 or 20. He remembers that as a kid he loved to catch wooden ducklings. They floated in a circular bathtub and the owner would make waves to make it harder for him to catch them with a long hook. Some ducklings had points on them, and if you got lucky you could win a sausage.
One time he actually won a sausage, and he proudly ran home to show it to everyone. His father, the butcher, snatched it from his hand, took a bite and threw it in the bin with the offal.
- That is the worst* meat I've ever tasted, you should know better than waste your coin on such a scam! Now take out the trash!

The taught of that incident saddens Roald a bit.
"Well, he's not here now, is he. Let's see what this carnival has to offer"
He weighs his money pouch in his hand. And walks to the wagons.

You weigh your money pouch in your hand, but the actual measure slips from your mind and becomes immaterial and hard to focus on.

One of the first stalls you come to has duckling shaped sausages hanging in a wave, and you need to catch them with a hook. The smell is... well you are not sure your father would even call that 'worst'.

The man behind the counter reminds you of your father, or maybe an uncle. He smiles a gap-toothed smile and motions you to try your luck.

Lille frowns in consternation at the claim. Why would they seem so excited about something that’s frightful? The laugh of a small child across the crowds doubles the apparent contradiction. "I will determine if it is truly a threat." She starts to walk confidently into the tent.

"But... but..." The wire-bearded person splutters, not having had time to prepare or build up their hype before you thrust the curtain aside and enter the tent.

At the far side is a table and chair and a man having a quick meal. He looks up guiltily and gives you hesitant and apologetic smile.

From outside you hear the dejected announcement: "Man eating chicken..."

Roald walks up to the man and asks "How much?"
He pays the amount asked for and the man hands him a long pole with a hook at the end. The pole is heavy and far too long to be accurate. The hook dangles from a piece of rope which makes aiming for the metal rings on the duck's heads even harder.
At least he painted them...
But Roald is strong and determined to "show him". Yet, everytime he almost hooks a duck, the bastard splashes with his hand in the tub and stirs everything up. Roald keeps trying over and over again, slowly losing his temper.
"Stop. Doing. That." he says, but oddly his words are not directed at the owner.
