The Broken Tower - Gameplay

Welcome to Glorantha

A mythic place of heroes and gods, where people hold allegiance to tribe, city, and cult, not to abstract alignments or ideologies. Although humanity is the dominant species, their dominance is due only to the quarrelling of the Elder Races, who still rule large parts of the world.

In Glorantha, the gods and goddesses are real, and through their cults they play an important role in most major events. Would-be heroes of the age are known as adventurers, and each is tied to several of the Runes, cosmic powers that define Glorantha and are likewise manifested by the gods. Powerful deities are associated with the Sun, Earth, Air, Water, Darkness, and the Moon, as well as with Death, Life, Change, Stasis, Illusion, Truth, Disorder, and Harmony, and each has its Rune.

Adventurers join the cults of their gods, from which they get magic and aid. Adventurers are participating and active members of society, whether clan, tribe, city, or other community. They have duties, loyalties, and conflicts beyond being mere freebooters, with ties to the world of Glorantha and the Runes as deep as they are profound. As adventurers advance within their cults, they strengthen their connection to the Runes, gaining power and questing towards becoming true Heroes. One of the most important places in Glorantha is Dragon Pass. Beset by conflict and blessed with opportunity, it is an extremely magical place, the center of many of the world’s great myths. Dragon Pass is
prophesied to be the site of the great, apocalyptic series of events called the Hero Wars. A recent revolution against the occupying Lunar Empire has left many of the cities of Dragon Pass in ruins. Nobles, cults, and clans vie for power and authority in their wake, and its liberators struggle to rebuild and reclaim that which was lost.

You’ve been on the road for a couple of days, riding in pursuit of the thieves that stole a large portion of your tribe’s cattle—one of its greatest sources of wealth. In the course of this heinous crime, they slew two of your kin and wounded another: simple herders, not even tribal warriors.

Zarah, the Ernaldori clan-chieftain’s wife set you—her boldest and most able-bodied allies—to follow, recover the cattle, and exact retribution for the insult. One of your injured kinsfolk recognized members of the Greydog clan among the raiders, particularly a man named Danakos, an ambitious and bitter Greydog.

The raiders’ path led in the direction of Lismelder tribal land, specifically to the Greydog’s home village.

This would be a good point to introduce your character to the rest of the party. Your character sheet has its own short introduction you can paste here or phrase it yourself however you'd like. You all know how to post in character, so I don't need to teach you that :)

"I am Vishi Dunn, known more in the Spirit World than this one. As shaman of the Blue Llama clan, I have ranged far and wide, seen much war and even more death."

"Some have called me 'Vishi Kinslayer', but trust me, that name was born of loyalty, not of betrayal. I believe that there is no greater chance for peace than Argrath’s promise."

"I saw Pavis liberated, and there I found friends in Vasana and her allies. Now I ride with them and offer counsel and warnings from the Spirit World - for those who will listen."

He smiles and points to a silver baboon scavenging the grass for insects nearby.

"Pay no attention to Cousin Monkey, my lackey. He is a coward and says little of value."
He laughs heartily with a casual and disarming demeanor.

Dazarim smiles ""I am Dazarim of the Sable Riders of Prax, and I am proud to be a descendant of the great bandit-king Patyan, a legend among my people. Greatness is in my lineage. My mother was the bandit chieftain Loram, and she taught me more about riding and desert survival than you will ever learn. I am as at home atop my mount as I am the ground and can ride like the wind. I have ridden from one end of the Praxian wastelands to the other and I have seen and done many things. I was there when Argrath and his allies summoned Jaldon Goldentooth to acclaim him as the White Bull, and I and my fellow bandits rode alongside him against the Lunars at their New Temple. There, I fought
demons and was near overcome, but I also survived that. Now I ride throughout Dragon Pass to see what I can see, to do what must be done. Stay clear of my sable, for its horns are as sharp as my sword. "
he pats the sable antelope beside him "And this is Sevara

Vasana is a small, athletic woman with a vicious scar across one side of her face. Despite her size, she rides a bison and is more than capable of commanding warriors and priests more senior than herself. She is heavily armored, with a shield, a sword and am axe, and a long lance. A complex bow sits on the saddle behind her.

As they ride along in search of the raiders, they begin to make acquaintances.

"Vishi Dunn. Dazarim of the Sale Riders of Prax, it is a joy to ride inert the same sub as you. I am Vasana, the daughter of Farnan, a hero of Starbrow’s Rebellion, slain and devoured by the Crimson Bat. In my war of revenge against the Lunar Empire, I gained the attention of Argrath at the Battle of Pennel Ford. I was sorely wounded at the Second Battle of Moonbroth, granting me this terrible scar across the left half of my face. I returned to my mother’s farm to recover, and now I am ready for adventure.

My friends know me for a fearsome bison rider, a skilled hand with a sword, and a devout worshiper of Orlanth Adventurous. My honor is my greatest strength."

The hunter moved swift and silent through the trees. The forest welcomed his presence as a well known child, seemingly embracing and enveloping his every step. Occasionally the snap of a twig or the flutter of a branch marked his passing, signs of the speed of pursuit. Nathem lamented those signs, but the trail was heavy with the scent of their quarry. The man channeled his frustrations into speed and alertness as he followed the signs of through the Lismelder lands.

The man paused as he jumped onto a moss covered boulder, looking at the tracks that led on. The only sign of his exertion was the sharp rise and fall of his chest. Nathem's lithe form bore the resemblance of a predator poised to spring. His dark leather's were covered in markings and runes that seemed to follow the surrounding forest. A wild crop of hair spilled down the man's back slightly covering the well worn bow slung their. A complimenting beard, bushy and long flowed down the man's front. His weathered skin seemed to perfectly fit the well worn leathers, both showing the scars of a life of battle.

No sound signaled the approach of Rurik, just that absence of noise that seemed to envelop her. Nathem turned his azure blew eyes to regard the shadow cat. She sniffed delicately at the air in the direction of their pursuit then turned to look at Nathem, her mirrored blue eyes boring directly into Nathem's. The hunter felt emotions rise from his chest as memories flitted at the edge of his mind. The anger boiled at what had been taken from him. Taken by animals that rejected the laws written on the land. By men and women that thought they could take whenever and whatever they wanted. Nathem new the truth. When you stole enough berries, eventually the thorn pricked you. He would be that thorn.

An involuntary growl boiled from Nathem's throat and Rurik followed with her own bass echo. Nathem stopped, his face dropping as he let out a soft, Tht, Tht. Rurik launched herself from the boulder with the grace and silence only a shadow cat could exude. Nathem gave one short nod, noting the sounds of his companions approaching on his left. The hunter resumed the hunt, leaving the rising emotions on the boulder behind. Nathem would continue to leave those memories behind until the blood on his hands washed away the anger.

OOC:
ok while we wait for Makarios to introduce himself, here's what you know.
• The clan chief, Baranthos son of Estavos is away at a trade-time festival at the Sun Dome Temple, along with many other nobles and landowners of your village, along with a protective force of warriors. His wife Zarah is in charge while he is away, and she asked you to do this deed.
• When the herders did not return with the cattle, Zarah sent a runner. The runner went to the pastures and found the herders lying on the ground in a row, two dead and the last nearly so.
• The injured herder is named Berra. She claims that while watching the herd as they grazed a couple of kilometers from the village, they were ambushed. Her fellow herders (Endach and Datha) were killed, and Berra was left for dead. She recognized Danakos son of Egrost as the one who stuck a spear through her belly, and said that the other Greydogs were surprised at Danakos’ actions
• The Greydog clan is a part of the Lismelder Tribe, longtime rivals to the Colymar Tribe (your own tribal affiliation). The Greydogs contest ownership of the Starfire Ridge with the clans of the Colymar Tribe. The Greydogs likely used the trade-time festival as an opportunity to raid against their distant neighbors, undoubtedly in return for some past offense.

The above is all common knowledge, however some of you might know more. Is anyone friendly or even related to any of the herders?

Anyone with Area Lore (Dragon Pass) can make a roll. (Use your Homeland Lore skill, as all of you are from Dragon Pass or Dragon Pass adjacent)

Nathem, I assume you examined the pasture before heading out to catch the trail, so you can make a track roll here. (as can anyone else that feels they have notable skills at tracking.)

OOC:
Rolling. Feel free to roll for me if needed as I’ll be out the next week.

Rolls

Track (05) 50 - (1d100)

Vasana's roll for additional details about the herders

Rolls

Homeland Lore (Sartar) (30) or (other) (00) 30 - (1d100)

(23) = 23

OOC:
As a herder himself would he be familiar with them?
Jul 21, 2024 10:44 pm
OOC:
Sounds reasonable, Dazarim

As Dazarim is a herder, in Prax anyway, he is familiar with the herders of the Colymar Tribe, though he doesn't have a passion Loyalty (Colymar tribe) it won't aid you
Jul 21, 2024 11:06 pm
OOC:
@Qralloq As Vasana has Loyalty (Colymar tribe) she likely at least knows the herders. You can invoke that Passion at some point in the scenario to augment a skill roll during the events to come.
Jul 21, 2024 11:24 pm
Vasana also knows of the Greydog known as Danakos, son of Ergost and he is a troublemaker.
Nathem, who examined the pasture before setting off, identified that half a dozen Greydogs took the cattle, judging from the tracks.
OOC:
Both of you can put a tick by those skills for successfully using them. Like CoC, these skills may improve after the scenario.

Edit: Actually looks like Lore skills don't have those boxes, so looks like you can't improve them through experience.

Everyone else can still make rolls, there might be more to know!
Jul 22, 2024 3:03 pm
What does Vishi know?

Rolls

Homeland Lore - 40 - (1d100)

(100) = 100

A serene young man emerges from his tent and glides up to the rest of the adventurers. He's dressed in a simple white linen rob and about his body is draped a large menacing serpent. He holds his hand up, palm facing forward in a gesture peace and warmth.

"Greetings. I am Makarios, son of Tharassa, a healer of Chalana Arroy. I have pledged my life to serving others as the goddess wishes." He looks to the others in the encampment and nods at each as they introduce themselves.

"A pleasure. I grew-up an orphan in Clearwine, if you want to know, in the temple of Chalana Arroy, where I learned much about herb-craft and the healing arts. This beautiful creature," he gestures with his long fingers to the serpent coiled around his body, "is Whisper. She found me when I was dying, nearly slain by trolls, and kept me alive. She is a bit shy, so do not feel offended if she is quiet to you." He smiles as he strokes its scaly body.

Because Marikos has Loyalty (Colymar Tribe), I'm assuming he would know what Vasana would.

Rolls

omeland Lore (Sartar) (35) - (1d100)

(20) = 20

Jul 22, 2024 8:22 pm
OOC:
The Loyalty is to show you have passion, in this case for the tribe (and likely know the victims or are even related to them, your choice) so at some point in the scenario, you can use this passion to help you to augment another roll.
Makarios is also familiar with Danakos, in fact he knows the troublemaker has hassled members of the Colymar tribe at various festivals and picked fights.
Jul 22, 2024 8:27 pm
OOC:
Vishi has heard of a Danakos from Zenthoring Village, to the south, though he doesn't know the man's father so can't be sure it's the same man.

Dazarim has some skill at tracking. Would he also check for tracks with the hunter? @The_Librarian
