Dead in the Water
The morning chill claws at you, from your spot out on the water. This winter is fixing to be meaner than the last, to hear Martin tell it. The weather was what he meant most of the time, but there were other ways, too. Last year, when this all just starting, well that was fresh hell. Fresh…
This year… not so much. Runs take longer, supplies are thinner. You’d spent the summer on the water and it had been a fine thing. Now… Now you can’t seem to keep the cold out. Not to mention the gentle, hollow rattling of the ship’s hull bobbing on the shore.
Dun… dun… dun dun… dun…
It’s always there. The water had its benefits, but the tinny sound of footsteps running up your spine every time someone needed to take a leak at night… Not so much.
