As suggested in the recruitment thread, we will select pregens in order of interest posted. Don't be afraid to ask if you can get a particular one, but don't be afraid to play something normally out of your wheelhouse.

1: GreyWord Opting to choose last.
2: ToCa81
3: Balthazar
4: Ronin_14
5: AceRancheros

Hi. Looking forward to play.
I'm playing one Dragonsbane game but we spent most of the time on character creation and intro, so I've only got very little impression of the game so far.

I wouldn't mind to pick last (I mean play anything that has left) and allow other to choose. I'm super flexible with a PC to play.
[ +- ] Suggestion: only pick Aodhan if cerntain

Now as I will be last to pick I am OK if you leave Aodhan to me, but he is not my first choice.

Luckily, spellcasting is very easy in this system! You declare your intent to cast a spell, choose how many willpower points you want to spend (each spell lists what happens when you spend more than the minimum), and then roll to cast. I see I failed to include the spells in the character sheet: I'll add them in immediately. And in addition, I'll list the spells here:

Magic Tricks

Heat/Chill
Notes
The area within 10 meters of you becomes pleasantly warm or cold. The effect protects against cold for one shift of time.

Ignite
Notes
You light or extinguish a candle, torch, or lantern within 10 meters.

Puff of Smoke
Notes
An impressive puff of smoke erupts in front of you. Very popular for dramatic entrances, and can give you a boon to SNEAKING in certain situations as determined by the GM.

Tier 1 Spells

Fireball
Notes
Rank: 1
Prerequisite: Elementalism
Requirement: Word, gesture
Casting Time: Action
Range: 20 meters
Duration: Instant
The spell sends a fireball from your hand or focus at the target. The fireball can be dodged or parried as a ranged attack. The fireball inflicts 2D6 damage on a hit and sets fire to flammable objects. Each power level beyond the first increases the damage by D6 or creates another fireball that hits another target within range.
Gust of Wind
Notes
Rank: 1
Prerequisite: Elementalism
Requirement: Word, gesture
Casting Time: Action
Range: 10 meters (cone)
Duration: Instant
The spell summons a great gust of wind. All untethered objects and creatures up to human size in the area of effect are pushed 2D4 meter away from you and suffer the same amount of bludgeoning damage. Against a swarm the spell deals 2D6 damage. Each additional power level increases the number of dice by one. The spell has no effect on monsters that are Large or Huge.
Pillar
Notes
Rank: 1
Prerequisite: Elementalism
Requirement: Word, gesture
Casting Time: Action
Range: 10 meters
Duration: Shift
The spell raises a pillar, three meters high and one meter wide, from the ground or a stone floor. If someone is standing in that spot, the victim must make an ACROBATICS roll (not an action) to avoid falling off the pillar. If the pillar is created under a low ceiling and the roll fails, the victim takes 2D6 bludgeoning damage instead. For each additional power level, the height of the pillar increases by three meters, which can mean falling damage to anyone who falls off.

Since I'm new to this site and RPGs in general, I'd like to give Bastonn Bloodjaw a try. He seems straightforward enough that I should be able to get a handle on the system pretty quickly. Like GreyWord, I'm flexible as well and totally willing to switch if someone else really wants him instead. I'll also be experimenting with the site, and learning how to post with the right font and formatting, so please ignore any wonky looking posts of mine while I get the hang of things.

Ronan_14 is up!
Jul 19, 2024 5:08 pm
Nice! Right now we're waiting for Ronin_14 and AceRancheros to accept their invitations. In the meantime, does anyone have questions about the game, the characters, the weather, or anything at all?

Have you run or played this game before cowleyc? Also, how does this adventure differ from the other intro adventure for Dragonbane called Riddermound?
Jul 19, 2024 7:17 pm
I've run Riddermound for a home group, and I liked the system and themes. This particular adventure has a similar vibe to Riddermound, but is different enough that it won't matter if you've already played Riddermound.

Hello everyone! Happy to be on board. Sorry for the slight delay, I was on the road today.

Looks like I will take on Krisanna the Bold (Halfing Thief) if I'm seeing that correctly. :) I love a sly rogue-like character! Super cool.

Cheers!

Perfect! Everyone has characters, and nobody had to fight over one! Go ahead and save a copy of the character sheet to your own library (as simple as selecting the sheet higher up in this thread and hitting Create Character), and then submit it to the game on the Game Details page.

Great. Hunter were my pick in my first game as well.
OK I have some questions and I have some feedback on the system by the way
[ +- ] how do I like system
I have a few question about skill checks outside combat. More about your DMing style than rules:
- Will DM be calling out a skill check needed or players can add a skill roll as they see fit?
(for example - should/can we roll Awareness, Spot Hidden and Sneaking every time we move from one place to another and what would you do if I roll a dragon on Awareness but there is nothing to be aware of)
- How/who is going to decide if other players could help with that dice roll or not? I see rule clearly state you can not help Awareness. Nothing on skills like myths & legends, riding, sleight of hand, etc. I know players could always come up with "innovative" (read silly) ideas explanations on how one person could another remember something he don't know himself or how fighter in heavy armor could help thief to steal. Do we want to go this way?
Jul 20, 2024 3:52 pm
For the first question, I will call out skill checks as I see them, but I also don't mind if you propose and roll a check. It can save a lot of time, just don't be upset if that roll isn't used.

For the second, this game is all about creativity, even more so than other popular games. You already have to justify the condition you gain when pushing a roll, I love when players come up with reasonable ways to help a roll. With that said, I do have the ability and responsibility to say NO at times; but I consider my job primarily to facilitate a safe and fun table.

one follow up question on help. Rules say help must be declared before you roll any dice. But if a player roll with the post where the action is described no other players have a chance to declare help before roll... are we going to ignore the rule on declare before here at pbp? Would it even make sense that the player who is declaring the help rolls the second d20 with his post?
Jul 21, 2024 5:44 am
We'll play that by ear a bit. If you want help with a roll, feel free to ask. But play does need to continue. Don't roll a second die, but we'll let others have the opportunity to try helping.

Hey everyone!

Thanks for having me! I am new to this game and system but have been looking through the rules a bit as I get time. Quick intro from me, my name is Joe, I live on the East coast of the U.S. (Maryland), and between family, work, and grad school classes, PBP games are one of my few hobbies at the moment. I look forward to playing with you all!
Jul 21, 2024 1:41 pm
Hey Joe! Welcome to the party!

I'm from the East Coast too but from your neighboring Country to the north... in Nova Scotia!

I'm new to the system as well... luckily it looks simple enough!
Jul 21, 2024 6:47 pm
Hey all I’m on the opposite side in California just outside Sacramento. I’m married with 2 little ones, so it’s hard to find time for hobbies. Which makes PBP perfect for me lol. I’m new to this system as well, and still pretty new to RPGs in general, having just started to branch out from board games. Looking forward to adventuring with you all 😄
Jul 21, 2024 7:47 pm
I live in the southeast US. PbP is a fun method of playing some TTRPGs that I otherwise wouldn't get to. My location isn't a large area so interest in TTRPGs is quite sparse. That, and being a busy father and husband makes it tough for in-person play.

Looking forward to it with you all!
Jul 22, 2024 2:39 am
Hey everyone, I'm Charles and I come from the Pacific Northwest of the US! We're covering our bases here. I have some experience running Dragonbane, and a ton of experience running games in general. This is one system I haven't quite scratched my itch for!

I'll open up the opening post so that we can get some character introductions out of the way, and get the ball rolling!
Jul 23, 2024 3:42 am
My bad. Misunderstood your post cowleyc and initially rolled for Awareness instead of Bushcraft when trying to follow Orla. Doesn’t matter much because it failed either way lol.
Jul 23, 2024 6:56 am
I know, I'm asking too much questions, but only because I'm trying to better understand things better.
Q1: when it was 'described "road has not been used for a long time" was it just a flavor text, or info on which I decided splitting a party is safe at the moment?

Q2: I assumed Orla is leaving "suitable path" and was expecting a Strength or Agility based check instead of Intelligence check. Did you choose Bushcraft as best available. What do you envision to happen if I fail? Would Orla get lost? Not make any progress?

Q3: Why does Bastonn need to roll bushcraft if he is just following Orla? Since Orla succeeded on her roll that means she found "suitable path" and Bastonn simply need to follow the same path.

Q4: I sure made it clear Orla does not ask for help, but if she would suggest one person to come with her, would that simple sentence turn two separate bushcraft rolls into one made with a boon?
Jul 23, 2024 9:30 am
1: As per the map and the text, there is a road but it has fallen into disuse. Now, most folks would still use it because it's likely the safest way up the hill.

2: Bushcraft is described as finding a suitable path. Individual obstacles might require Str or Agi, but you haven't happened upon them yet.

3: Having Bastonn roll Bushcraft was an easy way to Help, thus the roll was a Boon in disguise. Don't worry, I was going to compare it to your roll and your skill.

4: See my answer to question 3. It made sense to me there to give you a boon to your roll even without asking.

Relax, enjoy the story!
Jul 23, 2024 9:52 am
Oops, I see that I coded the sheets wrong! Dragonbane is a d20 Roll Under system, but I accidentally had it set to a Roll Over With Modifiers much like 5e. The fix won't be immediate, so don't stress about the modifiers. It takes me two seconds to compare the d20 result with your sheet.
Jul 23, 2024 9:53 am
@Greywand

Makander is simply being cautious... not all threats follow roads. Also the fact that no one returns from this place, the reason he volunteered, has his hackles up. He wants to bring you all out of this alive.

@Balthazar thanks as a player I hoped some will back my PC up . That was very nice. Orla is young and low on charisma but high on ego :)
Jul 25, 2024 1:55 pm
@ Balthazar It looks like you’re adding your attribute scores to your rolls. In this game you want to roll equal to or under the value of whatever skill you’re checking against. So for your last Myths and Legends roll, you would have just rolled an unmodified d20 aiming for a score of 10 or under. It’s kind of confusing because our character sheets on the site say improve next to these attributes, but I’m pretty sure that’s how it works. Does that sound right cowleyc?
Jul 25, 2024 2:00 pm
so would our skll modifier be a negative to the roll

ie. I rolled 17 - 10 = 7
Jul 25, 2024 2:05 pm
No it would just be an unmodified roll and you would compare it to that number. In this case, you rolled a 17 and you’re comparing against your Myths and Legends stat of 10. Since your roll is higher it would be a fail. At least this is how I think it’s supposed to work. Our character sheets on this site list each attribute with a ‘+’ before it, which makes it look like you add that number to your roll, but that’s actually just your base value for that attribute according to the quickstart book I have for this game.

This is a known issue, based on the character sheet I made. It automatically adds modifiers, which is incorrect.

In this game, you don't use modifiers. The "modifier" you see is supposed to be the skil level (or DC) itself. You roll a d20 and hope to be lower than or equal to that number. With a Skill Level of 10, a 17 is a failure by being higher.

But don't worry, I'm aware of the issue. And the way it's set up works well enough. If you roll with the modifier, I can see the original result and what the DC is supposed to be.

Btw does anyone know how to turn off email notifications for every time a new post is made in our thread? I turned off all 3 email options under my settings screen but I still get an email every time someone posts.

cowleyc says:

Technically nobody had a rope, but since it ended up in the narrative I'll need someone to buy it for one gold. I see Makander has ten silver, which is enough.
I don't have a gold, only 4 silver, but I do have a rope don't I?

Oh, I missed that! You're good!!!
Jul 28, 2024 8:39 pm
Also, as a note, please add damage rolls to your attacks! You just need to succeed at your skill check for the attack to hit, and it speeds up play of the damage is already there.
Jul 28, 2024 11:42 pm
Been a busy last 2 days... will get a post out tomorrow, sorry for the delay.
Jul 29, 2024 5:59 pm
Well that played out better in my head... I wish I could roll like that when high numbers are the goal!

Hopefully the fall damage isn't too severe! Who greased the rope??

Normally I wouldn't have him do such a thing but:

Weakness: Foolhardy. You always go first into danger.

I'd say the way Makander jumped headlong into danger is right in line with his character. Good stuff 👍

Makander's Battleaxe has the 'Toppling' feature... what's that mean?

Just to clarify situation with rope - I announced interaction with rope in this post and did not make strong reference to that action later. Will try to do better next time

Balthazar says:

Toppling is a special action to try knocking down an opponent. When a weapon has that feature, it means they have a Boon (Advantage) to that special action.

Jul 29, 2024 7:24 pm
I'll edit my bost to add in the toppling attempt
Jul 29, 2024 7:31 pm
wait, does the weapon still do regular damage if topple feature is used or is it simply to try and knock them to the floor? Boons are roll 2d20 and take best result?
Jul 29, 2024 7:34 pm
The toppling would be in place of dealing damage. It is often used to give another player a Boon on attacking the prone target.

Boons are 2d20h1, or 2d20 keep the highest.

Can you help me understand how Bastonn’s melee attack would work cowleyc? If I attack with his long spear I would roll 1d20, hitting on anything 18 or under (his str stat). And I would roll 2d8 for damage. Do I also roll a d6 on top of that for the strength damage bonus? That’s the only part I’m a little confused about.

That is exactly correct! You would roll a d20 to attak, then a 2d8+1d6 for damage.

I mean, that's pure gold right there!

I don't seem to have initiative listed on my sheet... what do we roll?
Jul 31, 2024 12:52 am
The physical game uses cards numbered 1-10. Should we all just roll 1d10?
Jul 31, 2024 3:13 am
Also standing by for initiative instructions.

Nice we took out a few of those baddies! Sweet. :)
Jul 31, 2024 4:08 am
So, since I don't know how to draw cards on here, what I'm doing is instead reverse engineering card draws. I've assigned everyone a number, and I'm rolling to see who gets the first spot, second spot, etc.

I tried to finish up the post before my live game this evening, but it didn't happen. I'm working on it now.
Jul 31, 2024 4:36 am
No worries take your time dude. You’re doing a great job running this game. I’m really enjoying it so far 👍
Jul 31, 2024 4:38 am
The main story post is updated, I'm not positive it marked as such.
Aug 1, 2024 11:08 pm
Thanks for handling Makander to keep things going.

My plan was to post today but I just worked 72hrs in 5 days and have only slept 3-4 hours a night and today I am totally wiped.

I am on vacation from tomorrow morning until Monday night and won't likely have time to post until Tuesday night.

I believe I may push dodge but will choose not to. Can't think of a good reason a reaction should impose any of conditions except Scared I have already, besides seeing how dice 'love' me I can't stop feeling it would be a fail anyway :).

I can see Orla getting exhausted or dazed from the sudden combat encounter she stumbled into. Not trying to be a bad influence but she does have an evade of 14 so pushing your luck might be worth it 😉
Aug 2, 2024 2:20 pm
GreyWord, you must be a beast in 5e games with these rolls. ;)
Aug 2, 2024 3:24 pm
dazed gives me disadvantage on agility checks which are all of my good skills, including combat. I'm not taking dazed, no way.
getting exhausted from dodging single attack - nope, it does not work in my brain. I can see her grasping for breath or otherwise suffering short term penalty, but exhaustion that will take hours to remove.
Anyhow, I believe rest of you will be able to finish the combat my PC initiated before my PC gets down. Go, go, go!
Aug 3, 2024 5:45 am
If we wanted to interrogate this poor goblin Batman style would we go with a persuasion check or can Bastonn just smack him around a bit? 😂
Aug 3, 2024 3:52 pm
You will likely need to make a persuasion if you are trying to get it to reveal info it otherwise wouldn't want to. But not to get it to start talking.
Aug 4, 2024 4:23 pm
I didn’t see the goblin’s response before my post. Oops lol
Aug 4, 2024 4:27 pm
That's alright! I assume it happened before the goblin answered.

Krisanna bobbing and weaving over here. Nice 👍

Rolls
Balthazar says:
OOC:
maybe it should have been 2d20l1... its lower than skill means success... sorry I have 3-4 games I've started that I'm learning new systems for. either way he should have success I think.
In this system
1. Rope gives Boon on ACROBATICS rolls for climbing, but the rope must be secured to something
DM obviously is able to override system, I'm just trying to help with learning the system as I'm doing the same
2. Rolling boon is 2d20L1 indeed, I also made the same mistake first time I did it. And rolling 18;20 gives 18 which is a fail (but not a demon 20, which is worse). Unfortunately "A" and "D" - advantage and disadvantage built into our charsheets contribute to the confusion as advantage takes higher roll on GP. I may try to redesign the custom sheet to solve this issue, when I have time for that

Rope?
ToCa81 says:
Bastonn unties the rope from his waist and lets it drop down the hole
I would like to point out that the rope owned by Orla were dropped and later picked by by Orla. @cowleyc do I have my rope on my PC right now or not?
https://i.imgur.com/ZRa6cTf.jpeg
Aug 14, 2024 5:37 am
Orla has her role, but Makander also has one. This was established when I offered the players the option to have bought one, which the mallard accepted.

Having climbed many ropes in my life, doing so with no time pressure shouldn't require a roll. It's as easy as locking in your feet and standing up. Doing it quickly, however, if a different story.
Aug 14, 2024 6:13 am
I've changed my weapons in sheet to this
https://i.imgur.com/a7JTcnW.jpeg
and clicking result in
https://i.imgur.com/mF75nZs.jpeg

Plan to do the same for skills, if anyone with more experience with custom charsheet could help make it look better - let me know
Aug 20, 2024 2:04 pm
Ronin_14 (Krissana) seems to no longer be with us, so I'll just take her on as an NPC for this game. Seems like we've slowed down a bit! Let me give you some prompts!

You're here looking for treasure. You've explored the cellar to no avail, though you did manage to slay a whole lot of goblins. There's a tower in the rear of this keep, to which the ravens flew. And there's some structure along the western wall, which supposedly houses "the boss." There's also a pig somewhere around here, though you don't see it now.

If you want to take a round test (10 seconds) or a stretch rest (15min), that would be fine!
Aug 20, 2024 2:29 pm
As a player I'm waiting for PCs down there in the cellar to make it up by the stairs or ask my PC to drop rope.
I'm blocked from actions because if my PC makes it back down or even listen to what happens down there she will trigger fight/slaughter of the orc and goblin due to her Weakness. And I don't think anyone want that in the story
Aug 20, 2024 2:49 pm
Bummer that we lost Ronin. Hopefully they find a way to get back into the game. I’m still into it and will likely have Bastonn take the stairs up. I want to give Ace a chance to chime in beforehand though.
Aug 22, 2024 9:38 am
I'm out of town today or tomorrow for first-aid training amd won't likely have time to post. Feel free to npc Makander to keep things moving.
Aug 23, 2024 11:56 am
Sorry folks, I've been in the middle of a move and didn't think it'd affect my posting frequency. It apparently has as I've seemed to have lost track of time on here. I'll get back into the swing of things now though to keep things flowing.
Aug 26, 2024 11:06 pm
point of housekeeping... when the group is done with the rope he will coil it up and tie it to his pack. I believe there was some confusion on whose rope it is.

https://i.imgur.com/vEDDiRn.jpeg
Aug 27, 2024 7:49 am
@Balthazar let me explain again about the rope
1. My PC had the rope in her inventory.
https://i.imgur.com/t2UugO7.jpeg

2. I described that my PC used that rope, but DM missed that fact
https://i.imgur.com/n8Ts8NS.jpeg

3. My PC later took that rope. It is on my PC, you don't get one

@ToCa81 GM suggest turn rest and I took it. I further suggested to do also stretch rest, but our party need to agree on a safe place to spend 15 minutes, because my PC will want to meditate those 15 minutes

https://i.imgur.com/YtypLFu.jpeg

@cowleyc I've just realized that
Quote:
Round Rest: A quick rest that lasts just a single round.
During a round rest you recover only D6 WP, no HP.
Fixing my PC to have +6 WP instead of HP (getting down to 1 HP).
Aug 28, 2024 11:47 pm
I've updated the character sheets to work much better! I figured out some nifty coding, so it should have everything right again.
Sep 4, 2024 4:56 pm
@Balthazar, did Makander ever take the Orc Helmet that Krissa a had found early on in this story?
Sep 4, 2024 8:27 pm
Feel free to ignore Bastonn’s bravado if y’all want to play it more cautiously. Just seems like he would be itching for the fight even if it’s not prudent.
Sep 5, 2024 12:38 am
I don't think I wrote a response to that... If I can, I'd have him had taken it.
Sep 5, 2024 12:38 am
I don't think I wrote a response to that... If I can, I'd have him had taken it.
Sep 5, 2024 4:20 am
Notes! Yeah, we can say you took the helmet! It's a Great Helm! +2 Armor Rating, Bane on Awareness and ranged attacks.
Sep 6, 2024 4:39 am
Boom. Dragon time. Bastonn had reason to be cocky 😄
Sep 6, 2024 12:34 pm
@ToCa81, you get to choose one of the following for your dragon!!!

✦ Roll double the amount of dice for the weapon’s
damage, before adding any damage bonus and other
bonuses. For example, if you get a critical hit with a
broadsword (damage 2D6) and have damage bonus D4,
the damage is 4D6+D4.

✦ You can immediately perform a second attack against
another enemy. This additional attack is a free action.

✦ Armor has no effect against the attack, as it finds a
gap or weak spot. This effect can only be chosen if the
attack deals piercing damage (optional rule, below).
Sep 6, 2024 2:25 pm
I’ll go with option 3 because he’s wearing heavy armor and Bastonn does have a piercing weapon 👍
Sep 6, 2024 10:40 pm
No freaking way 😂
Sep 12, 2024 4:04 am
Oops, I didn't notice everyone had made their rolls! I'll have a new post up in the morning.
Sep 12, 2024 5:31 pm
😅
Sep 12, 2024 7:07 pm
Rules question. Dodging requires that you have not already performed your action in the round. Doesn't it? Bastonn's made a spear attack for 16 damage this turn... Maybe I'm missing something?
Sep 12, 2024 7:11 pm
Nope, you're absolutely right and I missed that. It does take your action for the round. But we're at the tail end of this fight so I'm not overly concerned.
Sep 12, 2024 8:13 pm
If that’s the rule then we can go by it. I don’t mind.
Sep 15, 2024 3:02 pm
I'm going to be pretty busy between now and Friday with painting my house, and then I'll be in Hawaii for a week (the 20th through the 27th). I'll be slow for now, and unsure if I'll post then.

Let's see if we can wrap this up early this week!
Sep 17, 2024 1:54 am
And there you have it, folks! That was Dragonbane! I rushed the end ing just a bit after seeing how busy I have been. I'd rather tie it off with a bow than let it wait and weigh on our minds. I hope you had a good time!

I'd love to take feedback if you want to give some! On my end, I felt like this wasn't my best game. I stumbled at times, didn't proofread, and missed some statements (see: the rope). I'm usually better organized, but it's been a busy period for me; not to give that as an excuse, I do still feel I could have done better. But I had fun!

@cowleyc you did a great job introducing me to the system and telling a compelling story at the same time. I think I make quite a few mistakes as a DM when I'm DMing and I'm happy to not be the only one LOL.
My biggest struggle were dice - there were moment I a feeling I better not do anything. But it has nothing to do with system or DM. Just a cursed dice. Or I just need to get used to the fact that it is much easier to fail your key ability in Dragonbane compared to 5e and few other systems. i.e. my sneak had 25% change to fail, while a lvl 1 rogue in 5e would usually have +7 VS goblin passive perception 9, which is 5% chance to fail.

I enjoyed it for sure. Simple and easy to understand system. Wish it could have gone on longer, but Hawaii definitely takes priority. Looking to see where our other game goes. Have fun on Kauai 👍
Sep 18, 2024 2:46 am
Thanks for the game DM, I liked the system quite a bit actually and thought you did great! I can rest easy knowing that the pig made it in the end haha. Enjoy your vacation, hope its a blast!
Sep 19, 2024 1:19 am
Thanks for running us through the adventure... It was an interesting rule set... I rather liked it.

appologies that my posting rate fluctuated so much... would have liked to have been more consistant.

Enjoy your Vacation!
