Hey all I’m on the opposite side in California just outside Sacramento. I’m married with 2 little ones, so it’s hard to find time for hobbies. Which makes PBP perfect for me lol. I’m new to this system as well, and still pretty new to RPGs in general, having just started to branch out from board games. Looking forward to adventuring with you all 😄

I live in the southeast US. PbP is a fun method of playing some TTRPGs that I otherwise wouldn't get to. My location isn't a large area so interest in TTRPGs is quite sparse. That, and being a busy father and husband makes it tough for in-person play.

Looking forward to it with you all!

Hey everyone, I'm Charles and I come from the Pacific Northwest of the US! We're covering our bases here. I have some experience running Dragonbane, and a ton of experience running games in general. This is one system I haven't quite scratched my itch for!

I'll open up the opening post so that we can get some character introductions out of the way, and get the ball rolling!

My bad. Misunderstood your post cowleyc and initially rolled for Awareness instead of Bushcraft when trying to follow Orla. Doesn’t matter much because it failed either way lol.

I know, I'm asking too much questions, but only because I'm trying to better understand things better.
Q1: when it was 'described "road has not been used for a long time" was it just a flavor text, or info on which I decided splitting a party is safe at the moment?

Q2: I assumed Orla is leaving "suitable path" and was expecting a Strength or Agility based check instead of Intelligence check. Did you choose Bushcraft as best available. What do you envision to happen if I fail? Would Orla get lost? Not make any progress?

Q3: Why does Bastonn need to roll bushcraft if he is just following Orla? Since Orla succeeded on her roll that means she found "suitable path" and Bastonn simply need to follow the same path.

Q4: I sure made it clear Orla does not ask for help, but if she would suggest one person to come with her, would that simple sentence turn two separate bushcraft rolls into one made with a boon?

1: As per the map and the text, there is a road but it has fallen into disuse. Now, most folks would still use it because it's likely the safest way up the hill.

2: Bushcraft is described as finding a suitable path. Individual obstacles might require Str or Agi, but you haven't happened upon them yet.

3: Having Bastonn roll Bushcraft was an easy way to Help, thus the roll was a Boon in disguise. Don't worry, I was going to compare it to your roll and your skill.

4: See my answer to question 3. It made sense to me there to give you a boon to your roll even without asking.

Relax, enjoy the story!

Oops, I see that I coded the sheets wrong! Dragonbane is a d20 Roll Under system, but I accidentally had it set to a Roll Over With Modifiers much like 5e. The fix won't be immediate, so don't stress about the modifiers. It takes me two seconds to compare the d20 result with your sheet.

@Greywand

Makander is simply being cautious... not all threats follow roads. Also the fact that no one returns from this place, the reason he volunteered, has his hackles up. He wants to bring you all out of this alive.

@Balthazar thanks as a player I hoped some will back my PC up . That was very nice. Orla is young and low on charisma but high on ego :)

@ Balthazar It looks like you’re adding your attribute scores to your rolls. In this game you want to roll equal to or under the value of whatever skill you’re checking against. So for your last Myths and Legends roll, you would have just rolled an unmodified d20 aiming for a score of 10 or under. It’s kind of confusing because our character sheets on the site say improve next to these attributes, but I’m pretty sure that’s how it works. Does that sound right cowleyc?
Jul 25, 2024 2:00 pm
so would our skll modifier be a negative to the roll

ie. I rolled 17 - 10 = 7
Jul 25, 2024 2:05 pm
No it would just be an unmodified roll and you would compare it to that number. In this case, you rolled a 17 and you’re comparing against your Myths and Legends stat of 10. Since your roll is higher it would be a fail. At least this is how I think it’s supposed to work. Our character sheets on this site list each attribute with a ‘+’ before it, which makes it look like you add that number to your roll, but that’s actually just your base value for that attribute according to the quickstart book I have for this game.

This is a known issue, based on the character sheet I made. It automatically adds modifiers, which is incorrect.

In this game, you don't use modifiers. The "modifier" you see is supposed to be the skil level (or DC) itself. You roll a d20 and hope to be lower than or equal to that number. With a Skill Level of 10, a 17 is a failure by being higher.

But don't worry, I'm aware of the issue. And the way it's set up works well enough. If you roll with the modifier, I can see the original result and what the DC is supposed to be.

Btw does anyone know how to turn off email notifications for every time a new post is made in our thread? I turned off all 3 email options under my settings screen but I still get an email every time someone posts.

cowleyc says:

Technically nobody had a rope, but since it ended up in the narrative I'll need someone to buy it for one gold. I see Makander has ten silver, which is enough.
I don't have a gold, only 4 silver, but I do have a rope don't I?

Oh, I missed that! You're good!!!

Also, as a note, please add damage rolls to your attacks! You just need to succeed at your skill check for the attack to hit, and it speeds up play of the damage is already there.

Been a busy last 2 days... will get a post out tomorrow, sorry for the delay.
Jul 29, 2024 5:59 pm
Well that played out better in my head... I wish I could roll like that when high numbers are the goal!

Hopefully the fall damage isn't too severe! Who greased the rope??

Normally I wouldn't have him do such a thing but:
