Castle of the Robber Knight

For two days you have wandered, and now you have arrived at your destination. A grassy hill towers before you. On its crest rests a ruined fortress – the Castle of the Robber Knight. The warmth of the inn’s fire in the village seems distant now, but you all remember the old woman’s words. Long ago, a wicked robber knight named Rothgar Wolfsbane plagued this area, pillaging and plundering wherever he could. He fought against everyone – humans, dwarves, and elves – but it was the orcs who eventually brought about his downfall. An orc clan marched on Wolfsbane’s castle and stormed it. Many lives were lost that day, but in the end Wolfsbane fell and his castle was ravaged by flames. Brave fortune hunters have felt compelled to explore the robber knight’s castle in search of ancient treasures, but none have ever returned. Will you be the first?

We begin our story not in a tavern, but on a road long after aforementioned tavern. You have been traveling together for some time; enough to know each other well enough, though you may still hold some secrets close to your heart. The promise of treasure was enough to lead you down this path, and you find yourselves staring at the keep stop the hill... the Castle of the Robber Knight!

Barely visible under brush and weeds, an old paved road
winds its way up the hill. At its end looms a dark, dilapidated castle ruin. A raven caws somewhere nearby. The road is partially overgrown and
has not been used for a long time.
OOC:
This is your opportunity to describe your character, and to talk about what you would be doing in this moment! You are at the base of the hill, and the overgrown road leads up around the hill. Traversing this road might be slow-going due to the thick foliage.
Jul 22, 2024 8:11 am
Orla never say two words when one would suffice. Neither she wait an opionion before acting.
With a quite will check around she moves off the road.

Orla would go around the castle along it's east side. Since road is slow going the agile hope not to slow down party. She would be lookoking for any holes in the wall or even hidden entrance.
OOC:
Let me know if there is any problem with that course of action, but for me it looks reasonable
Jul 22, 2024 4:14 pm
Krissana is visibly giddy upon arriving at the ruin. Eyes wide and with a smile mixing equal parts mischief and anxiety she says to the group, "Well, here we are. Looks like no one is home. Easy pickings!"

Noticing Orla trailing off Krissana begins to continue boldly and without concern, slicing through the foliage with her dagger up the path towards what could perhaps be the main entrance, looking for a door.
OOC:
Krissana is a young halfling female. A bit on the lithe side for a halfling, adorned in leather armor with a dagger and a few small knives at her side.

She wants to work her way to the front entrance, or what's left of it at the end of the path.

Bastonn sniffs the air, trying to discern if there are any creatures rustling around in the bushes, before following the halfling into the brush. "There's a reason nobody has ever returned from this cursed place, Krissana," he reminds his comrade. "Best to stay alert and be prepared for anything."

As they travelled the long road to the ruined fortress Makander took up the lead with eyes and ears open for any dangers ahead. He waddled with the confidence of a true Knight and wore Platemail armor and wielded a Battle axe in one hand and shield in the other, always ready for trouble.

He hadn't know any of the four he now kept company with before hearing the storyteller's tale at the village tavern some time ago. Once he'd heard that so many had become victim to the castle and had not been seen since venturing into it, he could not, in all good conscience allow more to enter whose probability of returning seemed altogether unlikely. He would either enter with them and lead them out again once they'd completed their objective or perish with them to the perils within.

Having arrived he took note that Orla had split off from the main group to skirt around the castle. To Bastonn he stated then implored, "One reason could be that they decided to go off on their own and got picked off one by one... would you mind tailing after her and watch her back... " He'd have gone himself but felt Bastonn was more suited for travelling the rough terrain .

Aodhan walks behind the group, trying to keep up in his old age. To those who don't know Archmaster Aodhan, one look at him and they might wonder 'What is keeping the frail old man upright'. But truth is, Aodhan was still very much spry in his old age, and he was adamant that he could show these kids that he still had what it takes. True, it might be seen as a bit of midlife (or latelife) crisis that Aodhan had decided to leave his high position in the kingdom to go treasure hunting, but he needed a change of scenery and he very much liked his time with his new companions.

He walked up along side Makander, taking in the view while trying to pretend he wasn't trying to catch his breath as he used his staff to support his weight. "Ah! To be young and ambitious! he says referring to Orla and Krissana as he admires their tenacity. "I remember those days, when you felt invisible and the world was your playground. But! Eventually the world beats the wisdom right into you". Aodhan laughs at his own joke.

Orla and Bastonn, having opted for a more scenic route, find themselves safely traversing the hillside in order to survey the eastern side of the keep, rather than the western and southern that the others will see. The find the external walls tall and sturdy, though likely unable to withstand a truly powerful assault. There is no alternative entrance, nor an obvious secret exit.

Meanwhile, the three remaining adventurers follow Makander hacking and slashing through the thick brush all the way to the gate. Along the way, lucky Krissana spots something gleaming beneath the mid-morning sun. Halfway up the hill is an old helmet of charred metal, partially hidden in the undergrowth. Despite its age, it is perfectly usable. The helmet looks nasty with sharp spikes sticking out of the sides.

At this point, one stretch of time has passed (15min), and all five companions find themselves once again rejoined. At the end of the road rises an old castle that must once have been an impressive sight. Now it is a run-down ruin with partially collapsed walls silhouetted against the gray sky. In front of you is a broken-down gate of charred, rotten wood. The wind wails faintly as it seeps into the courtyard. There is a dark hole just inside the entrance, stretching the width of the gateway. A long plank rests on the opposite side, useless to you at the moment.

"This place has definitely seen better days," Bastonn quips. He cocks his head to the side and gauges the distance of the gap before them. "I could probably jump to the other side and push that plank over for the rest of you to cross," he offers. "Would want to tether myself to something first just in case I don’t make it, though. Not too keen on finding out what’s at the bottom of this pit." He crouches down and peers into the opening. "Aodhan, can you sense what’s down there?"

Aodhan can be seen staring off at the run down structures, though it’s unclear if he’s actually looking at it or just lost in a memory. At hearing his name he will clear his throat and step up next to Bastonn to peer down into the hole, squinting real hard with his old man eyes.

"Well let’s see now. It’s hard to say. You leaping over would be most convenient for us and I’m sure we can tie you off."
OOC:
Would that be an awareness roll?
Jul 25, 2024 2:35 am
OOC:
That would indeed be Awareness to pick out features down in the dark hole!
Jul 25, 2024 3:47 am
Upon eyeing the old helmet Krissana spoke mostly to herself,"Well, what do we have here?" She picked up the old helm and inspected its features. She wondered what stories the helmet could tell if only it could speak.

While others gathered near the opening she fiddled with the helm, inspecting it close and wiping a bit of dirt and muck from it.

Seeing the hole she walks up near Aodhan. "Say Aodhan, suppose we throw this down the hole. See how far down it goes? Too risky?" She looks up for some expectation of permission, with a mischievous grin.

Jul 25, 2024 2:23 pm
As Krissana examines the helmet, something crosses her mind that seems to fit: Orcs. This helmet was forged by orcs! The crude shape, the overabundance of spikes, the fact that is is still functional after who knows how many generations?!
Jul 26, 2024 12:14 am
Aodhan gets down real low, looking into the hole as if it’s pulling him in. Everyone around can hear the old man mumbling to himself. Something about "these kids" and "no patience".

"Ah yes, I believe it’s becoming clearer…or foggier. My eyes don’t work like they used too. Well I tell ya…I used to have impeccable vision, like an owl in the night I tell ya…"

"I'm fairly certain it's an old orc helmet. Useless junk to me, maybe you could use it?" She offers the helmet to Makander with a smile assuming an old dirty helm like this is probably beneath someone like him.
Jul 26, 2024 12:43 pm
Unfortunately, Aodhan can't quite pick out any details of what lies in that dank hole! It clearly opens to some large lower level full of rubble, but that is the limit that he can determine.

The chamber below is large, easily the same width and depth as the keep itself. Though daylight streams down through the hole, it does not spread out far enough to illuminate the room. It is damp and smells of earth. The floor upon which Orla lands is covered in rubble Barrels line the eastern wall, extending out past the torchlight. The southern part of the room, in which Orla finds herself, has several alcoves; many of these contain sleeping goblins, not yet aware of your presence.
OOC:
GreyWord, I need an Acrobatics check from you. The hole is 4 meters deep, and being safe reduces the damage that might come with a failure.

Well now, this story has taken an interesting turn! Orla descends into the darkness and, upon finding her footing, sparks up a torch. And finds a goblin face staring at her. The face, eyes closed, does not move for some time... It must be asleep! Letting out a sigh of relief, her breath tickles the goblins nose hairs.

The eyes snap open.

A bark of surprise from this creature is all it takes for the other five pairs of eyes to open in shock. Still in their beds and still processing what is happening, they are caught unawares. What do you do?
OOC:

No sooner was Makander shaking his head at the fool-heartiness of Orla's impetuous descent into the hole before enough investigation had been made, the knight headed for the hole when the sound of trouble. As he passed Bastonn he took the rope in hand, allowing it to pass through his grip before leaping off the edge, "Hold on tight!" he instructed his friend. He was not one to heed his own advice and charged towards danger without thought for his own safety, only wanting to get down to Orla and Krissana. As he soared out over the edge he tightened his grip on the rope and began swinging towards the wall directly below Bastonn, planning to bound down the remaining few feet to the floor. He only hoped his friend could hold the line and for the rope not to break.

He notices several notches that should provide enough room to wedge his paws into, and immediately swings over the edge, scrambling between handholds downward into the fray.

🔹 Spellcasting requires a Roll to Cast. This is a d20 against your Elementalism skill.

🔹 Those of you descending via rope do not need to make an Acrobatics check. This was for Orla before any rope was mentioned.

🔹 However, Bastonn is trying to get down without a rope, which means his roll stands. The wolf can take a condition to push (reroll) that check, though!

🔹 Those of you who have made it down are able to attack, which is a d20 against your Attack Skill (Clubs, Knives, etc). Please add a Damage Roll as well.

Pointing his staff at the raining goblin, Aodhan will put on his commanding voice:

"You there! Goblin! What are you doing here in this hole! Is this meant to be trap?"
Aug 3, 2024 3:59 pm
"Not trap! Sleep-place! Was just trying sleeping!" shouts the bewildered goblin as the point of its rusted blade darts from one of you to the next. "Live down here under castle!"

From deeper into the darkness, a voice calls out, "It's true. They live down in this squalid hole." The voice is deeper, but feminine. You cannot see who speaks, not unless you bring your torch further into what appears to be a cellar.
Aug 3, 2024 4:02 pm
Bastonn flanks the goblin and points his spear threateningly at its neck. "Answer him!" he roars at the frightened imp. "Or you’ll have an extra hole to breath out of very quickly."

"Who’s there!? Show yourself! If you come out unarmed and with good intention, we will not bring you any harm."

Then he’ll whisper to the goblin, not trusting any reply he’ll probably receive.

"Who is that in there?"
Aug 5, 2024 11:46 pm
A voice comes back, "It's just me, Grunta! Don't hurt me!" Stepping from the darkness, an orc comes into view with trembling hands raised. Her eyes dart around fearfully, occasionally locking on the dead goblins.

"Grunta is coward," whispers the goblin. It seems a little more relieved that it is still alive.
Meanwhile, Orla finds her way back out of the cellar and into the surface once again. The broken walls of the castle rise up around you, framing a courtyard filled with rocks and rubble. A gnarled old oak tree reaches for the sky from the center of the courtyard. In the northeast corner is a stone staircase leading up to a rickety old tower. To the west, an open door gapes into a stone building by the western wall. To the east there is a wooden hatch in the ground.

Two goblins laze about by the tree, small and ugly. As you come into view, they gawk for a moment. Two more (for a total of four) leap from the tree where they had been watching!

What would have been a deadly wound to the already wounded spellcaster becomes instead a frustrating scratch on our mallard hero. Makander leaps into the way of the blade in a display of self sacrifice, and then lashes out with his axe in a display of rage. Two goblins fall in the cellar, and the second reveals a snarling Bastonn holding a bloodied spear.

Outside, Orla returns fire towards the two goblins keeping her pinned down, and manages to slay one and critically wound the other in a display of her skill at archery! Alone and bleeding, it is a relief to see the remaining goblin planning to flee!

With the goblin threat now dealt with Makander did a quick head count of his companions before realizing they were one short, "Where's Orla", he quacked. "Go stand in the corner of your alcove there and face the wall. If you turn around before we all leave this room, I’ll nail you to the wall." Bastonn brandishes his smaller throwing spear at the goblin for emphasis.

Turning his attention to Grunta, he commands "Lead us up to the castle entrance, orc. Once we are reunited with our allies above, we will help find your precious pig. And I strongly suggest you don’t try my patience unless you want to end up like the rest of his friends," he adds, gesturing to the goblin corpses strewn about the pit.

Outside of the cellar, Makander braves the congress of ravens as they sweep past him, providing a sort of buffer for the wounded Orla. When they have passed, the mallard looks untouched by the weaponized extremities of the birds, though his armor looks to be in need of a good painting. They fly past and up to the top of the tower.
Down below, the goblin does as commanded and cowers in a corner, shaking through trembling breaths. The orc hesitantly moves towards the stairs in the back. Pushing up a trapdoor at the top, daylight streams through to the cellar showing a place of neglect... and goblin corpses.

Heal condition requires stretch rest. Looks like Aodhan suggest we don't need one. I tend to agree that it would be most logical continuation to the story - I really don't want to chill 15 minutes together with an Orc knowing a goblin run off to probably inform boss about our arrival - that's what I would guess if Orc is not lying.

Grunta reluctantly leads the party into the chamber along the western wall. What must once have been the great hall of the castle is now a sad mess of half-rotten rafters, broken dishes, and fallen mortar. The center of the room is dominated by a long oak table, and a large painting hangs askew on the north wall. You hear a faint gurgling sound coming from a cupboard in the corner.

The table is covered in debris – pottery shards, old tin cups, broken wine bottles, and moldy food scraps. The latter indicates that someone has been eating here recently. The painting depicts a stern man with evil gray eyes, a wicked grin, and raven hair swept behind his head. He wears a full suit of armor and carries a horned great helm under his arm.

Bastonn’s eyes widen at the sight of food, but his excitement is quickly dashed when he sees that only moldy scraps remain. "Bah," he grunts in disappointment. Noticing the painting on the wall, he remarks "That must be the infamous Rothgar Wolfsbane. Doesn’t look so tough." He turns to Grunta. "Is that sound coming from the cupboard the pig you seek, orc?"

"No, no, no..." mutters Grunta, squirming in a most un-Orc-like manner. "Merle is too big for that cabinet."
Aug 30, 2024 9:33 am
Orla puts her bow away, draws a knife and try to silently approach cupboard and swing it open aiming to kill the goblin who she thinks is hiding in there. The one who almost killed her...
Aug 30, 2024 2:41 pm
Out of the cabinet tumbles a scrawny goblin, holding both an empty wine bottle and a particularly large drinking horn. This is not the goblin that Orla had seen escape. This one, with wide eyes, begins yammering about how it is only here to escape a brutal orc attack. As her eyes lock into Grunta, she cries out and points a terrified finger towards the orc!

Orla surprised look at the goblin for a moment. With a an evil grin she say: This Orc won't hurt you, at least until you cooperate. So tell us where are the rest ? Where could they be ?
Sep 1, 2024 2:57 am
"Where are who," asks the goblin? "The other goblins are dead! The orcs are away far away, but they'll be back!". The goblin's eyes dart from adventurer to adventurer, seemingly trying to piece together a puzzle. There is a lack of confidence in her answers.
Sep 1, 2024 8:20 am
OK. You want live, right? Go open tower doors. she turns to rest of the party suddenly realizing she is not the alone friends, what do you think? Let this goblin open doors for us and ask anyone inside to come out? There is no use of him anyway
Sep 1, 2024 3:51 pm
"I doubt this one could even walk in a straight line for very long. It may be useful for flushing out any more goblins hiding here in the castle, but it may also give away any chance of surprise we have moving forward. Doesn’t matter too much to me either way. I will strike down any foe we come across."

Aodhan nods in agreement with Bastonn.

"She might not be of very much use."

Then to the goblin.

"We are searching for this orc's pig...among other things...do you know where we might be able to locate it?"
Sep 3, 2024 1:06 am
The goblin things for a moment, scratching her chin with one hand and her ear with the other. "Oh!" she suddenly explains. "You can use the horn! It'll summon the pig to you! My little chest is too small to blow air through it, but you're all much bigger than me! You, especially," she says looking at Grunta. The little goblin holds out the horn, gesturing for someone to take it.
Sep 3, 2024 1:59 pm
Orla keep wondering why would rest of the party try help Or, ORC!. And now they are obviously going to trust a goblin...
She shrugs and accept the deny of her plan without regret and retreat to the other end of the room where she try to find comfort in a chair while Aodhan and Bastonn are playing their strange games with the Nightkin.

Makander joins Orla. Being a knight he could not abide working in consort with such vile creatures. He was not a zealots, however, so he let Aodhan and Bastonn do whatever it was they were doing. He would remain handy should they decide to end the nightkin's lives. He would surely help them with that.
Sep 4, 2024 4:40 pm
Bastonn steps over to the inebriated goblin and snatches the horn from her hand. Towering over the diminutive creature with eyes narrowed and fangs bared, he threatens, "If this horn summons any unwanted guests, the last thing you see will be my spear piercing your skull." he tosses the horn to Grunta without turning to look at her. "You, orc! Blow into it," he commands.
Sep 4, 2024 5:17 pm
Grunta takes the horn and steps out into the misty daylight. Holding the horn to her misshapen lips, she blows into it. But instead of any bright sounds, instead of any regal song, a flat, dead sound wails from the instrument.

Dark clouds find their way before the sun, and a shade of darkness descends upon the keep. From every corner and over every wall, fog begins to roll into the courtyard. Ravens screech from the tower a cacophony of terror.

As the fog things, a dark figure can be seen standing before the dead tree. Tall, heavily armored, and bearing a great morningstar resting for the moment upon the ground.

The little goblin squirms and laughs sadistically. "Now you're gonna get it, lightwalkers! He's gonna get you good!"

Facepalm. Anyone help ? Orla try to turn down the table to make it block entrance at least partially
Sep 4, 2024 8:22 pm
The goblin’s cackling celebration is cut short as Bastonn thrusts his spear through its face and out the back of its head. Withdrawing his spear, he turns to face the open courtyard. "Let him come," he bellows to his companions. "It will be refreshing to face a worthy foe after wasting our time with all these irksome goblins." He extends his long spear, pointing the tip at the figure under the tree, and issues his challenge. "Your blood will feed the roots of yonder tree. Prepare yourself fiend!"
Sep 5, 2024 4:28 am
Aodhan softly chuckles...

"Well we were bound to face what ever it was eventually. Good of him to come to us though. Ready yourselves friends!"

He won't move to help Orla, the furniture seems heavy for someone his age.

Instead he'll stand with his staff at the ready and facing the door, readying to cast the moment the thing walks through.

Sep 6, 2024 12:41 am
With the table set, the creature (which you recognize now as a Wight) begins stomping forward towards you. Its heavy boots thud into the earth, and as it emerges from the mist you recognize it from the painting. Rothgar Wolfsbane, in the undead flesh! Its eyes lock onto Makander, though perhaps it sees the orcish helm itself. Strangely, it pays no mind to Grunta, holding the horn and quaking in her boots outside the hall.

Aodhan, having prepared for this moment, is ready to unleash an arcane torrent upon this monstrosity!

Quote:
If your HP reaches zero, you drop to the ground and risk dying. You cannot move or perform any actions except trying to rally (below).

Death Roll: On your turn in each subsequent round, you must make a death roll – a roll against your CON. The death roll cannot be pushed if that optional rule is used. Record the results of your death rolls on your character sheet. After three successful death rolls you recover D6 HP and stop making death rolls. After three failed death rolls, your player character dies. Rolling a dragon counts as two successful death rolls, and rolling a demon counts as two failures. If the combat ends, keep counting rounds until all death rolls have been made. Any failed death rolls are reset if you survive.

Rally: Another player character within 10 meters and earshot can PERSUADE you to rally and keep fighting despite having zero HP. This counts as an action. If you rally, you can continue acting as normal, but must keep making death rolls as described above. You can even try to rally yourself, rolling against your WIL with a bane (instead of PERSUASION).

I would try to sneak around if not for the Orc, are you sure we need him alive and able to warn anyone still left around? An orc and a pig? I don't buy it!

As the heavily wounded warriors fight off death, the stone pillar blocking the exit collapses, sinking roughly back into the earth and showing that sorcery had occured here. Outside, Grunts the orc is found waiting outside like the coward she is. There is still no sign of the pig.

The band of adventures cautiously explore the remaining ruins, finding not only heirlooms that might be of value to a collector as well as bags of gold and silver, but also a scared pig of no small size hiding terrified in the basement of the tower! Grunta takes the pig and flees for her life, fearing the arrows that the elf might loose at her. She takes none of the treasure.

It is a long walk back from the ruined keep, and the gold itself doesn't last as long as it should when back in town. Ale is poured and stories are told. The Castle of the Robber Knight is one adventure you can hang your hat on. It was you who slew the great Wight.

As for what comes next... well, that's another story!

The End
