Chapter 2: Local Heroes

Jul 17, 2024 11:28 am
The next morning you all awake to people taking down the remaining market stalls and taking a look at the damage in daylight.

You are in the middle of breakfast (wether in the Rusty Dragon or elsewhere), when you are approaced by Father Zanthus and Sheriff Hemlock. They ask to meet you all at the Rusty Dragon so they don't have to say what they are about to say twice.

Once you all have arrived (though Li is missing, having left in the early morning to try to get an audience with Lonjiku Kaijitsu), they sit down with you in a table in the corner.

"Thank you for coming," Sheriff Hemlock says. "I must thank you again for what your heroism last night. It saved a lot of lives, and gave my deputies time to act without having to spread out too thin. Though thanking you isn't the only reason I gathered you."

Father Zanthus has remained silent for now. "This morning I was readying some plots to those that did not make it yesterday. May they rest in peace," he takes a moment of silence, touching his holy symbol. "I noticed something off. The door to one of the burial vaults was ajar. Afraid there could be a goblin there still, I found the sheriff."

"I assume it's nothing," the sheriff interjects. "But better with strength in numbers. And if there's trouble I'd like to watch the Heroes of Sandpoint in action myself."
Jul 17, 2024 11:53 am
"If you are just asking us to inspect a vault, I would say just two of us could handle it on our own, even if there were a single goblin in there. When shall we proceed?"
Jul 17, 2024 1:53 pm
"Two of you? What, you and your dog?" Grimwulf says, chuckling at the thought.
Jul 17, 2024 3:31 pm
"Hey, we haven't seen that dog in action yet, the furball may surprise you." Wess turns to the sheriff, "We'll help you out of coure, but has the entire town been searched? Just in case some Goblins wormed their way into any other crevices?"

"Of course I will help, Saldrina adds. "It would be my honor. But I worry that it might be more than just a goblin. Has the ground been consecrated?"
Jul 17, 2024 5:57 pm
Khel listened to the proposition while stroking his beard. He then looked at Father Zanthus and said, "You mentioned burial vaults. I presume this is the Sandpoint cemetery? Or is it like within the cathedral grounds?"

Sheriff Belor Hemlock
The sheriff smiles at Chigaru. "Oh. I have no doubt you could deal with a lone goblin. But I'd like to see you all in action if you don't mind. So far you have been a boon to this town, but want to make sure my trust in you will be well deserved."

He listens to Wess question. "I have five deputies, two of which is nursing injuries. We haven't gone door to door if that's what you ask. I am counting on the townsfolk being aware. But when I get a report, like Father Zantus here, I take it seriously."

Avstalar Zantus
Father Zanthus smiles at Saldrina. "We usually concecrate when we bury, but I'm afraid we have no way to make it permanent. And it is too much ground to cover the whole thing."

"It is the boneyard as we call it. It is the graveyard right behind the cathedral."
Jul 18, 2024 3:29 pm
"Then my concern is more the dead, than the living. We will need to be very cautious."
Jul 18, 2024 5:46 pm
Khel listened to Saldrina and then nodded, "Well, if it is this serious we should not wait. There can be more than one goblin also."
Jul 18, 2024 7:43 pm
At mention of the undead, Grim scowls, "Nasty bastards. Fought them before when we were escorting some academics to Ustalav."

Getting up from his seat the halfling pats his weapon "Luckily I have just the thing to make them rest in peace, permanently. Shall we?"

Sheriff Belor Hemlock
As a group you make your way to the cathedral. The sheriff is mostly curious about the out of towners. "So, how long you planning on staying?" he asks.
Jul 19, 2024 7:43 pm
As long as it is necessary," Saldrina replies. "Who knows? Sandpoint is a nice enough place, current issues notwithstanding. I could see myself settling here."
Jul 19, 2024 9:44 pm
"Aye. I was only in town for the festival, but may skulk about if things stay this exciting." Wess add with a chuckle

Khel walked with others while speaking to the sheriff, "I came to Varisia in order to learn about it's history and magical practices. However, my journeys have been expensive and I am not in a good position. So, I am kind of looking for temporary work. I plan to stay and save some coins until I can travel again."
Jul 20, 2024 6:55 am
"As you may know, I have been living here at the House of Blue Stones for several years. I have just graduated and was going to use the Swallowtail Festival as a sort of graduation and farewell party to myself. It is time to leave and see the world. But it seems that will be delayed a bit until we are sure Sandpoint is safe."

The sheriff nods along as you make your way to the cathedral. Arriving, you can see the burial chamber in question quite easily. The door seems to hang ajar. The sheriff tells father Zanthus to head inside for his own security.

Drawing a sword, he moves closer and motions for you to follow. He opens the door fully so you can look inside, and it seems Saldrina's fear was well founded as half a dozen skeletons shambles towards you the moment the it opens.
OOC:

Chigaru kicks the door closed, hoping to catch several of the skeletons and crush them between the door and frame.
