Kaladan says, without turning his head and knees to the ground stunned, "The prize item of the collection, the midnight pearl, is gone. The glass... it is shattered. Someone... someone must have come during the fight.... and took it." Crow notices that this one display is the only display that was damaged and there appears to be no broken windows like downstairs.

The king nods at Xcha and waves him to relax. "Thank you for drawing their attention to me. After they failed to harm me before, they seemed to focus on you all. Perhaps that was them acknowledging the danger you imposed on them over simply attacking me." Xcha is not sure if the king didn't notice, or if he is being nice and not bringing it up.

Crow leans down, picking up a shard of glass, thinking about the Pearl...Apart from its value what makes it so special?

Crow doesn't recall it having heard of such a thing that makes it special all by itself, but it very well could be a material component in a necromantic ritual or something adjacent. In other words, it's not likely a magic item, but is likely something a spell needs to consume to do something, like raise dead requiring a diamond.

Bells was concerned over the damage Travail had taken, "Looks like they really did a number on you, old friend, but when you are more dangerous than the rest of us combined," The bard rolled her eyes while blowing a fallen tendril of hair upward from her forehead, "then it comes with the territory. Why don't you sit and recover? I'm really going to have to get a healing spell if everyone keeps insisting in jumping into swords. In a minute, let's get Xcha and Crow over here so I can provide a little pick me up."

"To be honest, I feel like we failed here. The gods be praised the king is whole but five of the kingdom's heros had a valuable item stolen right in front of them with everyone getting away. How embarrassing! So does anyone know why this pearl is specifically valuable?"

Striding over to the window opening with shards of glass still hanging precariously, Bells looks out searching for any rope the intruders may have used to swing into the room. "We know they used magic to escape but that's not how they arrived. Those brutes busted through the windows perhaps the roof holds clues if they first assembled there.

Once the aasimar had focused his internal light on healing some of his internal and external injuries, he slowly walked to the curator.

"You wanted to talk about history tonight. Talk about this Midnight Pearl... quickly... before I bleed out."

Kaladan, Dragonborn Curator

Bells looks out the window and does see ropes dangling from the roof where there are broken windows. How they managed this is unknown.

Kaladan looks at the party, still in shock, "I don't know anything of the black pearl beyond what is commonly known. It is a very rare gemstone, despite being called a pearl. It is rumored that it grows only near where the veil between the shadowfell and material plan is thinnest, but many people believe that is made up to explain how its black color is so dark it looks impossibly so. Valna, your elven diviner friend, told me to give it to her instead of displaying it, but I denied her request. I thought only she and I knew it was here, so when it became public knowledge tomorrow I would have much more security than I did tonight. Some diviner must have found out I had it."

Kaladan mentioned Valna. She is a high elf wizard who helped you all in your travels. When you would not know what to do, she would charge a free to use divination magic to help you go in the right direction. All of you are on at least friendly terms with her.
OOC:
I see some players are taking a short rest already. I had planned for you to be able to take a short rest, but in the story you have not done so yet. You can keep any rolls already made, but none of that is in effect until the scene is over, especially since it has been maybe only 5 minutes since the enemies left.

"So lemme get this straight," Hunt interjects, his tone cold. "A diviner told you to take precaution, and you... assumed no one but you and this one Diviner knew about the rock? So what, Valna is the only Diviner in the world? Or what, you just assumed no one was looking for the magic rock? You... you ain't that smart are ya?"

Hunt turns away, muttering. "Need to get your nose out of all the books and live in the real world some."

Orientating herself back toward the room with conversation, Bells inwardly cringed as she heard Hunt insulting the curator. Granted her own thoughts had not been kind toward the dragonborn but one didn't have to say everything that came to mind. But then when one has a blunt object, is it really such a surprise if something gets smashed? But even Hunt should know better than to disparage the host.

"Now, now the evening has tempers running high. It is well known what a scholary individual you are, Master Kaldan but no one can be an expert in every field. Some items have multiple layers of value....magic likes to hold its own secrets close so how could you expected to properly assess the risk? Mmm, Wizard Valna....I don't suppose she told you the why of her interest? No matter, it is a place to start as we are on familiar terms with her."

What is your next course of action? Your current task is to find the black pearl that was stolen during the chaos. You are level 15, so you could have a method of locating something. If no idea comes to you, you can locate your diviner friend and see if she can locate it, though that would take longer than you doing something yourself.
Sep 4, 2024 9:45 pm
Has the king expressed any interest in us getting it back?
Sep 4, 2024 10:04 pm
OOC:
I don't see how any of my skills are particularly helpful in locating the pearl. I had thought about using Bells' tavern connections to see if chatting had been going on about an upcoming heist but it seems like we already have a lead so without some other direction, I think we should follow it.

I would still like to do three things with haste being a priority 1) make sure the king has guards before we leave 2) cast aid 3) check the roof quickly to see if something was left behind. I got the feeling that was a dead end but I would hate to miss a valuable clue due to a wrong assumption

"Once your majesty is safe back in his chambers, we can seek seer Valna. Hunt, I believe you're the best person to examine the thieves' setup on the roof."

"Thank you everyone for your hard work. I will make for the castle with most haste. I will admit the theft has me worried. If this foe had only need for wealth, they would have stolen much more. As they stole one thing and one thing only, that either means it is so valuable it is worth being the only thing they steal, or they have a purpose for it. Being as they appear to be a group of necromancers, or necromancers adjacent, are are willing to attack people with the undead they make, i fear ignoring this will have dire consequences. If you all would, please find the black pearl." The king then waits for whoever offers to escort him to the castle and makes for the castle at a good pace. Not far away is a carriage he came in. It appears it was spared any harm, and will use it to head back if no one insists on an alternative.

When you go to the roof, you find the ropes dangling at the windows attached to segments of the roof to allow for the swing that they performed earlier. As for how they got on the roof, those of you who are magically inclined feel the reverberations of magic in the air, as if it was used here recently, but the reverberations are too faint to tell what they were from this feeling alone. There does not appear to be any sign of manual climbing onto the roof.

Xcha remembers his amulet against detection and location which should protect him from evil mages.. Who seemed to be the biggest problem tonight
Sep 5, 2024 5:51 pm
"Yeah, on it." Hunt will make his way up to the roof to look for any useful information.
Sep 5, 2024 10:13 pm
"Without a proper guard I wouldn’t trust that carriage" Says Crow It’s slow and vulnerable. When was the last time you rode a horse Sire?"
OOC:
Crow can summon phantom steeds, super fast when dashing. Unless there are other suggestions? He can cast this multiple times to get one for most of us.

OOC:
@MaJunior @CherokeeWind Was there anything in particular you wanted to do on the roof? the 2nd part of the king's most recent post talked about what you'd find on the roof. If you have more questions, you can roll what you think is appropriate.
"Thank you, Crow. The castle isn't too terribly far away, but if you wish to use your own means to get me back while your allies investigate around I will not refuse the offer. When I get back to the castle, I should be safe for the time being. I have hired a few elite guards since the attack from cultists and their backgrounds have been vetted extensively. You all should be able to focus on this new problem at hand."
