OOC:
Ishi has Bardic Inspiration, don’t forget @forkbeard
Eozindra cringes in disgust at the thing in the storage room and fires again, hoping for better luck now that the creature’s presence is already known, keeping her distance in the corner as best she can.

She fumbles the bolt, jamming her crossbow as she attempts to reload and calls out a curse in Thieves’ Cant, one of the few choice vocabulary words her sister taught her in their private language lessons.

Morik called on the light of the moon to bathe the dark denizen, before his growl turned to a roar as he changed into a bear, hoping to draw the creature's attention away from the others.
OOC:
DC 14 Dex save for Faerie Fire.
Bonus Action to Wild Shape.
[ +- ] 1. Faerie Fire
Aug 28, 2024 7:10 am
The creature thrashes its body as only an invertebrate can. As a result, it is not affected by the Faerie Fire. Morik roars and shifts into the shape of a brown bear!
OOC:
@grifter730 - The creature is Large, so it takes up a 10'-square area. Faerie Fire affects all creatures in the 20'-square area. I'm assuming that you don't want the 20' cube to include both Mara and Elysia. You can shift the spell so that the area includes the creature and only one of them; which do you choose?
[ +- ] Mara in area
or
[ +- ] Elysia in area

Rolls

Creature DEX save DC14 - (1d20+1)

(20) + 1 = 21

Aug 28, 2024 8:18 pm
OOC:
Oof, let's do Mara, I assume she'll have higher Dex to avoid it. Sorry guys, I always forget that allies can be hit with FF as well :(
Aug 28, 2024 8:59 pm
OOC:
Future reference, a Steel Defender doesn't have good saves. DEX is its second best, but it's still only 1+ my proficiency bonus.

That said, it's easy AF to repair it, so do what you need to.

Rolls

DEX Save (Mara) - (1d20+3)

(8) + 3 = 11

Aug 29, 2024 4:28 am
OOC:
I don’t mind making the DEX saves next time, it’s like my main thing as a rogue.
Snickering silently at Zin’s cursing, she pats herself mentally on the back for teaching the bard some of the codes she uses. With humor still in the front of her mind, she swings her rapier again at the weirdly gigantic bug.

Rolls

Rapier Attack - (1d20+6)

(11) + 6 = 17

Rapier Damage - (1d8+4)

(1) + 4 = 5

Sneak Attack Damage - (2d6)

(33) = 6

ROUND TWO (LAST ROUND)
(for the start of the battle, go to round one)

Ishi doesn't know what it is, but he knows that he can wound it, as he enters his bloody rage and hacks into the monster again. The creature takes 14 slashing damage (8 rolled damage, +4 STRmod, +2 for Rage).
His auntie, Elowin, is paralyzed and vulnerable.
Dismayed at seeing her companion incapacitated, Eozindra prepares her crossbow with shaking hands and fumbles the bolt. "The merchant got a good deal!" she says, tapping her left wrist twice with the middle and ring fingers of her right hand. Then she begins loading the crossbow for the next shot.
Elysia smirks at Eozindra's casual use of the innocuous language that represents a tremendous obscenity in Thieves' Cant, and then the rogue stabs into the gigantic, undulating, tentacled arthropod. The creature takes 11 piercing damage.
[ +- ] Junk Room Battle, Start of Round Two
Adran, still adjacent to the monster, tries to pierce the flailing monster with a crossbow bolt, but in ducking the undulations, his aim is thrown off and the bolt goes wide.
Mara's jaws are not inhibited in this way, and it tears into the creature, ripping off one of the dozens of legs. The creature takes 3 force damage.
The monster tries to sting Ishi with its tentacles while it continues to find Elowin's flesh. Elowin takes 10 piercing damage.
[ +- ] Junk Room Battle, Middle of Round Two
Morik the bear noses his way between the artificer and the cleric. His snout is battered away by its whipping body, but his claws latch onto the creature and tear it in half. The horrible thing takes 8 slashing damage. The two pieces flop and flail for a few moments longer, but this crawling monstrosity is most certainly not a threat any longer. "Hey you stupid bug," Eozindra insults the creature, "We've squashed bigger problems than you already!" The monstrous vermin dies.

Gradually, Elowin recovers from the effects of the stinging tentacles. She takes some deep, shaky breaths; her fingers and toes tingle for a bit as feeling returns. Elowin is no longer Poisoned or Paralyzed.
[ +- ] Junk Room, post combat
The party spotted something shiny in the junk earlier, and stairs lead up out of view to the south. Characters looking up the stairs can see a faint glow at the top of the stairs, as of light cast from a distant lamp or torch.
Adran (26/26)
Mara (20/20)
Elowin (11/24)
Elysia (24/24)
Eozindra (15/15)
Ishi (35/35)

(5) + 2 = 7

Aug 29, 2024 2:12 pm
Calling out the Elvish word for, "Again," Adran takes another shot as the glowing mechanical canine attempts to tear into the multi-limbed monstrosity.
OOC:
Adran can't aim to save his sister's life... 🙄

[ +- ] Junk Room, Round Two
It is Morik's turn for round two, and everyone else should declare their actions for round three (including @runekyndig, who should roll the CON saving throw for Elowin).
21 - Ishi (35/35)
20 - Adran (26/26)
20 - Mara (20/20) HIGHLIT by FAERIE FIRE
19 - Elowin (11/24) PARALYZED and POISONED
17 - Eozindra (15/15)
12 - Elysia (24/24)

OOC:
Can Morik drop Concentration on the Faerie Fire? It didn't affect the creature anyway, and I don't want the good doggo to be affected. If so, he'll drop it.
Aug 30, 2024 2:36 am
OOC:
@Grifter730 Rules state you can drop concentration at any time (no action required). So unless our GM has a house rule of some sort -- yes.

Adran, not comfortable with the creature being so close, drops his hand crossbow and slides his dagger out of his sheath and attempts to stab the damned thing while telling Mara to keep up the attack.

Rolls

Attack (Dagger) - (1d20+6)

grifter730 says:
Can Morik drop Concentration on the Faerie Fire? If so, he'll drop it.
OOC:
Yes, but that's free. What action(s) will Morik take on his turn?

Note that you can move through spaces occupied by an ally, as long as you do not end your turn in the same space as another creature/combatant. So Morik could move to be adjacent, attack, and move back away again. However, know that this may provoke an attack of opportunity if Morik leaves without taking the disengage action.
Aug 30, 2024 6:19 am
Morik roared in frustration as his spell failed to take hold. Worse, it was affecting the good doggo! He let the spell fizzle out, and charged in at the creature instead.
OOC:
He'll wedge in between Elowin and Adran. If there's not enough space for him to stay there, he'll move out and incur the Opportunity Attack.

I assume a 10 didn't hit :(

Note: Eozindra did not expend any abilities - neither Unsettling Words or Bane - in this taunt, as the creature has already been defeated. But I liked the taunt.

Adran moves to Elowin places a hand on his sister's shoulder. "Are you alright?" The question is simple, direct, but makes the feelings he holds for his sister quite plain. Mara moves over and the artificer rests his other hand on his companion, but his eyes never leave his family member.
Aug 31, 2024 6:31 pm
Elysia eyed the siblings, a small, fond smile on her face before she glanced at her own. Satisfied that Elowin was in good hands and her own sister was okay, the rogue turned towards the stairs. As quietly as possible, she crept up them to peer around.

Rolls

Stealth - (1d20+8)

(8) + 5 = 13

Having defeated the monster (which anyone proficient in Nature can now identify as a carrion crawler), the party catches its breath. Adran moves to check on his sister Elowin, who had so recently been paralyzed. He puts a hand on her shoulder: "Are you alright?" as he rests his other hand on his stalwart contraption companion, Mara. Morik realizes that he can barely see anything in this junk room, having lost his dwarvish ability to see in the dark when he transformed into a bear. Luckily, a very faint glow from the room above suggests that there will be more light to see by further in the Abbey. Elysia, touched by Adran's display of filial affection (and not being able to provide her any healing), creeps up the stairs to reconnoiter. The stairs are steep, and when Elysia starts, the topmost stair is above her head. But as she crests the stairs, she sees a large open space, much of it backlit by distant torches on the far side. She ducks down behind some barrels so that she can be concealed while she takes in all that she can see.
[ +- ] Elysia's view from the top of the stairs
The room is ancient, with a beautiful ceramic tile floor running the entire length of the room. The walls have slumped or fully collapsed in places, making for awkward angles that divide the space into two "lobes." A thick layer of grit/sand is scattered everywhere - probably from crumbling stone. The area she is in - the north "lobe" - has clearly been used for storage: there are barrels and crates that have been brought here recently, as evidenced by scuff marks in the grit on the floor and lack of dust on the containers. Beyond that - in the south "lobe" - is a still pool that reflects the distant torchlight; the smell of petrichor is very strong. Next to the pool is a wall lined with deep shelves, on which rest not books but many supplies: coils of rope, lanterns, flasks, small pots, boxes, and bags. The room opens up on the right, and there is a suggestion of more shelves there, but she can't see it well from her current vantage.

The tile ends 40' away at the other exit from the room: a tall archway that opens into a much-better-lit hall. It's bright in there, and she can see the flicker of two more torches, hanging in brackets embedded in columns. Past those, maybe 60' away, is a closed door.

Thank you brother. I have been better, but I will live.
Elowin leans on the wall for a moment, eats a glimmerberry and catches up with the rest of the group.
Seeing the bear squint at the darkness, she places her hand on his shoulder. You miss your dwarven darkvision? Allow me to let Luna light your way.
Morik's bear eyes are now even better than his normal dwarven sight.
