Seeing the room in front of her, her little thiever-ish heart started pounding with excitement. The items might not be decadent, but they were supplies she could pilfer to help keep her sister… and the rest of the group now too… safer in their quest. Worried there were more hidden creatures or traps, she grabbed up a large handful of ball bearings and tossed them down the walkway, looking for anything that moved or activated.

Kilikina says:
Don’t want to hold the game up, but basically, I’m gonna grab a handful of ball bearings thingys and roll them down the room to see if there’s any traps or enemies. I’ll make a nicer post about it when I have two seconds later.
Elysia grabs a fistful of ball bearings from the pouch she uses to carry them (about 200 of them) and then softly casts them out across the gritty floor.
OOC:
Roll a Perception check for Elysia.
runekyndig says:
Elowin ... eats a glimmerberry and catches up with the rest of the group.
Elowin eats a glimmerberry, gaining 1 HP and feeling very full.
OOC:
Elowin now has exactly half of her max HP: 12/24.
runekyndig says:
Seeing the bear squint at the darkness, she places her hand on his shoulder.
Morik's bear eyes are now even better than his normal dwarven sight.
OOC:
I love this!

As the group moves to follow Elysia, they come to a stop as the rogue tests for traps. Adran's eyes never leave the room in front of them, even as he gestures and again rests a hand on his sister's shoulder while he speaks; A feeling of health washes over her.

"Just in case," he whispers. He glances at Mara when the companion nuzzles his side, and with a smile takes his hand crossbow before patting the constructed canine and returning his gaze to the room, in time to see little ball bearings roll out in a fan.

Morik nudged Elowin with his huge head playfully, and flashed some teeth. It looked more ferocious than friendly, but it was his best attempt at a smile. He sauntered ahead with a new bounce in his steps, and a sharp glint in his eyes.
OOC:
Morik can go up front, what with such a far distance Darkvision, and he's got plenty of HP.

Note: Eozindra did not expend any abilities - neither Unsettling Words or Bane - in this taunt, as the creature has already been defeated. But I liked the taunt.
OOC:
Yayyyy resources conserved! Also, sorry about being quiet past few days. Three day long nerd fest at the local annual anime/gaming convention. I am too old for that much walking but I did it anyway and basically went into a coma yesterday. WORTH IT.
Eozindra tiptoes carefully down to her sister, drapes her arms over the rogue’s shoulders and gives a quick squeeze. Knowing all too well what the younger half-elf would see in the mess before them — potential, loot, spoils, etc. — the older sibling whispers, "Let’s do this carefully, yeah? Never know how many more big buggies are out there."

Slipping her arm through Elysia’s, Eozindra takes cautious steps behind the group heading forward with their bear buddy leading the way.

OOC:
DM: I'm going to treat the others coming up to join her as ADV for Elysia's Perception check.
As she rolls the ball bearings, Elysia peers through the darkened room to see any reaction. There is none. She peers toward the lit exit to the south. Opening her mouth and tilting her head slightly, she is faintly able to hear two distant people talking. They sound pretty far away - the echoes are distorting their voices - but she figures that they're probably in some area beyond the lit exit. Guards or lookouts, maybe.

"The Lord Mayor sez we are gonna get rich off dis next haul!"
"Yeah, but how is dressing up as clowns gonna help?"
"Well...uh...you know, that's just part of his greater plan!"
"I don't like runnin' in those floppy shoes..."

...or maybe they've just moved off somewhere secluded to gossip. Who knows? In any case, if the party can move quietly, they can probably avoid alerting these guys, as they seem pretty deep in their inane conversation.

Adran whispers "just in case..." to his sister, and heals Elowin. Elowin gains 5 more HP.

Since Elysia has not given any alarms (and they can see her, crouched at the top of the stairs), the others move cautiously and quietly up the stairs. Eozindra slips her arm through Elysia's, reassuring her that they're together. "Let’s do this carefully, yeah? Never know how many more big buggies are out there." Morik noses forward past them. He leads the way and the others follow. As the bear tries to squeeze along the collapsed wall to avoid the edge of the pool, the water itself rises up to strike him in a surprise attack!
OOC:
The Thing in the water is invisible in water, so it has advantage on this surprise attack.
Morik is apparently grabbed by the water itself, because the amorphous creature that has attacked is a transparent blob!

Morik the bear takes 6 bludgeoning and 3 acid damage, is Grappled and Restrained, and is pulled down into the pool with a soft slurp of water.

Everyone, roll initiative.

OOC:
Morik is on the map, but the others cannot see him in the dark water. Morik is 20' down in the pool and is Grappled and Restrained. As an action, he can choose to attempt to break the Grapple (DC15). Others can jump in to assist (or attack the Thing) if they wish.

Squeaking in horror as Morik is yanked away from the group, Eozindra quickly calls to their bear friend, "We’re coming, Morik!"
OOC:
Can I give him a bardic inspiration as he disappears over the edge?

Sharply inhaling through her nose, the half-elf is startled for a second before she utters an elvish curse word. Pulling on Eozindra’s arm, sheshe trades places with her sister, satisfied to have her a touch further from the danger and getting closer to help a, dare she say, new friend fight against drowning.

ROUND ONE
(this is followed by round two)

While exploring the library, combat begins when Morik is grabbed, Grappled, and Restrained by a transparent monster lurking in the pool and is dragged under the surface.

Ishi roars, enraged, and dives into the water.
Elysia hears the voices in the distance stop, then one of them says:
"What was that??"
"What? I didn't hear anything."
"You didn't hear that shriek??"

In the murky water, the barbarian is just able to make out the shaggy shape of Morik-the-bear; and Ishi slashes at the water around the ursine hero. Amazingly, the sword seems to bite into something with more resistance than water!
OOC:
@forkbeard, please roll damage for your enraged attack.
Edit: Thank you. The transparent monster takes 13 slashing damage.

Elowin calls upon Lunea's might, and the sound of a bell rings out. It seems to have no effect on the submerged, invisible creature. Attuned to the distant conversation, Elysia hears the voices again.
"OK, you had to have heard that."
"...yeah."
"Sounded like a bell, right?"
"...yeah."
"We should check it out, yeah?"
"...I guess so."
"You guess so? What, you think a bell isn't suspicious?"
"...the Lord Mayor could have got a bell!"
"Oh, come ON!"

[ +- ] The Library, middle of round one
Morik feels the constricting pressure of the transparent creature wrapped around him like a suffocating blanket, and tries to break free. The ursine bulk is too much for the clear monster - it is accustomed to grabbing medium-sized prey - and the bear breaks free of the grasp of the monster. Morik is no longer Grappled or Restrained, but he remains in the water.

Elysia is dismayed at the foul smell that lingers in the air around the water: Morik doesn't smell that bad as a bear, so it must be the funk of the transparent blob that grabbed him. She confirms that the monster that snatched her companion is no longer at the surface and that the pool is mostly normal water by slashing and stabbing at it with her rapier. She sees something bobbing along a handspan beneath the surface, and recognizes Jeffery the newt, in his element, drifting in the drink. He must have floated off when Morik was dragged below the surface.

Adran steps through the miasma left by the monster and takes position next to a bookcase loaded with various kinds of gear (and one book). He recognizes the newt, too, and is reassured that the party mascot is unharmed for now. Mara clicks along behind him. The artificer can now also hear the approaching voices. He estimates that the party has at least ten seconds before the guards arrive at the archway.
"Don't you think he would have told us, if he'd got a bell?"
"...Well..."
"...Yeah, you're right. He wouldn't tell us anything. I don't know why I said that."

Twenty feet down in the pool, the transparent blob swivels invisibly in the water, which Morik and Ishi can only detect as a change in the water pressure or wave within the pool. Hurt, it lashes out at the barbarian that slashed it. It is a powerful hit, but Ishi's rage sustains him. Ishi takes 11 damage (half of 17 = 8 and half of 6=3) and is Grappled and Restrained.

Now it is Eozindra's turn to complete round one.

Eozindra rushes past the pool, discharging her crossbow into the water, and then takes cover behind a bookshelf, content to wait with Adran for the two rounds it will take for the speakers to arrive. The bard's crossbow bolt whizzes past Morik's fuzzy ear and passes through the creature harmlessly. If it hit the creature, Morik observes, it did not slow down at all.

I'm gonna change my move before it's locked in.
Seeing the barbarian follow the bear below, Sia changes her plans now that she knows Morik has help. Looking back to Adran, she says, "There are others, just up ahead, I can hear them. They might come investigate." She gestures in the direction of the voices before looking at her sister and continuing, "Be on the lookout and prepare your crossbow."

With her message delivered, she unsheathes her rapier and attempts to slash at the water, hoping to somehow do damage to it. She's not really sure what she's fighting, having never encountered anything like it, but she's hopeful that there's some kind of substance to it that she can attack.

Adran puts his faith in Ishi and Elysia, helping Morik. His mind wandering a bit, he can't help but wonder if Morik couldn't just change into a smaller shape, or something that breathes underwater.

"Jeffery!" Dammit, Adran can't worry about the li'l guy right now. He moves forward, Mara at his heels, pressing himself against the end of a bookcase for cover and keeping his eyes on where Elysia said she heard voices.
OOC:
Moving forward, directly to the right of Ishi's icon at the end of that bookcase or shelf.

OOC:
I was waiting to see if @grifter730 was going to attack or break the grapple. It's been three days, so I'm saying that Morik will try to break free first. Why? Even though the monster clearly has a low AC (witness Ishi's hit), any attack would be at DISADV from the Restrained condition. With Ishi's attack and Elysia's distraction on the surface, I will say that Morik has ADV.
