- Benji -

Bev is fascinated by all this.

Having heard about the soirée she looks at your patches of missing hair. "When I shaved that," she says, possibly revealing for the first time that she knows more about Benji than Emmma maybe thought, "I did not know you had a fancy party tonight.

"The wounds have healed." She observes, not having taken much note after the events of the night before last. "Won't the hair, like, just grow back?" She asks. "It did in Interview with a Vampire. Else we can shave it all off, to make it look even?"

What do you do?
Sep 27, 2024 6:51 am
Benji touches the shaved patch on the side of his head. "Oh, I’d rather not, thank you. It’ll grow back eventually."

As they leave the store, Benji notices that Emma seems significantly less excited about her new dress than she had moments prior. Hoping to cheer her up, he says, "The money wasn’t doing anyone any good sitting in this shoe box. It’s much better spent helping a friend."
Sep 27, 2024 11:51 am
"I guess" Benji barely knew her, so he couldn't really count her among his friends. She appreciated the gesture, however, and tried forcing a smile to her lips: "- thank you"

Once out of the store, Emma hurried up and opened her umbrella. There was so much rainwater these days that the storm drains were overwhelmed. She carefully sidestepped a large poodle, realizing she might have been better off buying herself a nice pair of boots, than high heels

"Where is this party, anyways*? And what time should I show up?"

"Nightfall at Arundel Castle. I’ll see you there!"

To Bev, he adds, "It was good to see you again, Bev."
Sep 28, 2024 1:14 pm
"Arundel Castle?!?" she blinked in surprise, but quickly composed herself. "Yes, sure. I’ll see you there, I guess"

She stood beside Bev as he turned to leave, her lips pressed together in thought, before she finally summoned the nerve to speak up and ask the questions nagging at her mind: "I hope this isn't too direct, but I have so many questions. Like; how do you feel about crucifixes? Do you count every grain of rice that spills? Do you cast a reflection? Are you hurt by silver?" She didn’t expect him to answer all at once, or even any of them. But he was the only other vampire she'd met, and the friendliest, so far. She couldn't let this opportunity slip out of her grasp: "I don’t suppose we could meet again, sometime?"
Sep 29, 2024 6:32 am
"Oh, the crucifix thing is just something humans made up to sell bibles," says Benji, amused. "Counting is… a way of coping with the hunger when it starts to become difficult to ignore," he continues, trying to answer all her questions as succinctly as possible. "Personally, I’ve always preferred music as a means of distraction and there are all sorts of other strategies, I’m sure, but counting things is a very common one."

"As for silver and mirrors: wounds made with silver weapons are painful and very slow to heal and mirrors made with silver won’t show a vampire’s reflection. We do reflect in other surfaces though." He waves at his reflection in the glass window of the shop, to demonstrate.

At her request to meet again, he beams. "Of course! I would love to. In fact, if you need a lift to Arundel, my friend Jacob is giving me a ride in his car. I could ask him if he would be happy to take you too, if you like."
Sep 29, 2024 12:29 pm
"Thank you" she was grateful for Benji answering her questions. She had many, many more swirling in her mind, but those would have to wait for some other time, when they weren't standing out in the rain.

"Elliot is sending a car for me, but save me a seat for the ride back" Ellliot was the the one who invited her to this exclusive party. He was the one who paid for her dress. She figured it was best not to show up in the company of any other vampire, less she offends the Vampire Lord's inflated ego.

"I'm looking forward to seeing you both there. "

Emma stepped back to admire her reflection in the mirror. Turning slightly, she tilted her head just so, adjusting her posture to emphasize her curves. She couldn’t help but admire her body – a moment of vanity she indulged in every so often. She knew the effect she would have this evening, and relished in how powerful, and daring, it made her feel.

Of course, she had no idea if vampires had the same ‘urges’ as mortal men (it was too soon to broach the subject of undead libido with Benji). But she was a ‘thirst trap’ for the vampires attending the party in more ways than one. She still had a pulse, and blood flowing through her veins. Her crimson-red dress was like a neon sign advertising a succulent meal. One way or another – she was going to get their attention.

It wasn’t particularly smart to put herself out there as bait. She didn’t know what she would do with a vampire either, if she did manage to get one to eat out of the palm of her hand (figuratively only, she hoped!). But it was a calculated risk. The conversation with Benji convinced her that Eliot was indeed a vampire of great importance. She was his guest at the party, and no one would dare to harm her while she was under his protection - which only made the prospect of teasing them that much more exciting!

Her eyes flicked over the details one last time; the suggestive red dress, the high heels that forced her calf muscles to tighten. A shade of red on her lips to pop against her pale skin, and the low-hanging silver necklace to add another touch of mischief to her attire. A final spritz of perfume, and she was walked out of the bedroom with a blend of sass and captivating allure, her heels clicking against the laminated floor of their apartment.

"Hi!" She stopped and smiled at her in-laws, and at her husband, without missing a beat. The trio were gathered around the dinner table, and by the looks of it, were not too keen on going back out into the heavy rain to make it on time to their dinner reservation "Sorry for not being here when you arrived. And for leaving so soon" she started with an apology – an earnest one "How was your trip? I heard they had to close down some of the railways due to the flooding"

David's father accidentally spits out his drink when we sees you. He looks like he is about to nudge David in the ribs to say 'nice one, son', but his wife glares at him. "Don't you think you should cover up, honey." She says to you. "The weather outside is frightful. Where did you say you were going?"

"I was just saying," David interjects. "They are talking about needing to close much of the underground, the pumps can't keep up, what with the rising river and the overflowing sewers. It kind of snuck up on us, no one noticed because we have not had many 'storms', as such, just unrelenting rain... It is going to get bad..."

David has already expressed his concern about your being on the road in this weather, but, as usual, he is supportive and does not want to stand in your way.

"A gala at Arundel Castle" Emma knew her mother-in-law wasn’t going to like the answer to her question, but she would probably like the answer to ‘do you think you should cover up’ even less "It’s starting at eight, and it’s a long drive, so I better get going. My ride is waiting for me down at the street"

The rain was coming down in sheets outside. Lightning flickered in the distance, illuminating the dark sky in flashes of blue. Even though she was looking at the storm through the window, she discounted David's warnings, her mind too preoccupied with the party. It was easy to brush his concerns aside. She wasn't going to let a little rain stop her from meeting the 'shakers and movers' of the supernatural world.

"Sorry again for leaving in such a hurry. We’ll catch up tomorrow at noon; I got a whole day planned"

She usually parted from her husband with a kiss, but not wanting to smudge her lipstick she settled for placing her hand on his chest "I’ll be back late, so don’t wait up for me. And offer your parents some tea. You don’t need to wait for them to ask"

"Tea! Of course!" David says with exaggerated realisation.

"Enjoy your evening. Don't work too hard." He says while holding an umbrella for you to get into the town-car parked in the dingy alley outside your flat. If he is disappointing that there is only the driver, and that he does not get to meet your mysterious benefactor, he does not show it.

There is an ornate, hand-written, gold embossed, invitation card with your name on it on the back seat.

Emma settled into the plush leather seat in the back of the car after exchanging a terse ‘hello’ with the driver. She found the invitation card in short order, but waited for the car to roll away from her street and turn a corner before flipping it over to its other side to check whether anything else was written on it other than her name.

The front of the card has your name, writ large, in beautiful script, as well as the Arundel location and the date and time. Yours says '20:00' (unless it says '8pm', or something less formal?) rather than 'nightfall' as Benji's does (if you check and compare).

On the back is a small, dense QR code. If you scan it, it appears to convey the same information: date/time/geo-location, but the rest of the space after that is filled with seemingly random 'garbage' data. (If you check, you will find that neither Benji's nor Elliot's have QR codes.)

The rain has been sleeting down the whole trip. There was an accident on the motorway where a lorry lost control and overturned, blocking multiple lanes and causing traffic to be diverted by wet and irritated traffic cops, but you made it without incident.

Arriving at the junction of London Rd and High St (and New Cut), an attendant —in the shelter of the large gate [streetview]— looks over your invitations. Emma is immediately allowed through, the gate attendant instructing the driver to drive right up to the castle proper, along paths that are really too narrow for a modern vehicle [jhigh streetview].

There is no parking up by the castle, and the instruction is to drop guests off and return to park outside by the football club to wait. Benji and Jacob may want to think about how they approach, especially if Jacob wants to draw as little attention to himself and his imitation-invitation (and its similarities to Benji's), but if it is best to walk in or for Jacob to drive Benji in and then find a place to hide the car once inside, I can not say.

Lightning has stalked you all the way as well, and, as you approach the cattle, a bright flash illuminates the massive walls as the rain suddenly stops, as if by magic... literally, outside, and on the exterior walls, it is still raining, but a little ways inside the perimeter it is dry, the lawn looks like it has been manually watered and not rained for a for a week. Above you the sky is still dark and overcast, but rain does not fall on Arundel.

"So what’s the plan?" Benji asks Jacob as they near Arundel. He’s been nervously fidgeting with the radio throughout the whole drive. He’s wearing his nicest waistcoat (the one that still has all the buttons) and his best shirt and trousers, and even his good coat (though the moths have taken a few nibbles out of it, as he suspected). "Should we split up so they don’t notice our invitations are similar? Maybe you should go first. That way, if they do get suspicious and decide to look closer, they’ll be looking at my invitation, which is real anyway."

Emma gave up trying to make conversation with her driver five minutes in. His responses were laconic—when he could be made to reply at all. He seemed like a mindless drone, his sole function be transport her from point A to point B.

The long drive, stretched even longer due to the accident on the motorway, left her eager to engage with someone other than her phone. She waited inside the car for the driver to open the door for her, and shelter her with his umbrella, and was surprised to find out he didn’t have one. It didn’t rain in the castle ground. Not even a drizzle. Maybe there was a little lull in the storm – or maybe the weather wasn’t as bad as in London, but she still expected it to be windy, with some precipitation.

Odd.

"Thank you" she offered the driver-with-the-lifeless-eyes her gratitude when he offered his hand to help her out of the car. She took a moment to admire the castle grounds; the imposing walls and the towers bathed in soft, golden light. Dim uprights illuminated the pathways through the castle’s surrounding greenery as well. A nice stroll, without a constant barrage of rain, was a tempting idea, but it would have to wait for later. Eliot was probably already expecting her, and she didn’t want to keep him waiting.

Expecting someone familiar would show up to welcome her inside, she lingered at the entrance a couple of minutes longer to soak the scene, and to appraise the rest of the arriving guests.

"Oh no, my friend. You were kind enough to let me have your invitation, and I'll drive you to the entrance like a lord," says Jacob. "There's no way we're walking like soaked peasants in the rain. Don't worry, I'll find a place to leave my car".

Just as you are starting to wonder if anyone is coming, a polite cough from behind you indicates that someone has been standing there, in the shadow of the tower, waiting for you to be ready to proceed inwards. For a moment you think it is your driver, but you saw his taillight all the way down by the road mere moments ago, but this guys could be his brother.

"Whenever you are ready, ma'am." Your guide says in a flat voice, devoid of any emotion. You get the feeling he would be happy... or let's say 'willing'... to stand there and wait indefinitely. "If you would like the tour, I am at your disposal."

OOC:
Your guide would offer to 'take your coat' or umbrella, or whatever, if you have anything like that, but your description did not include such. Feel free to add anything relevant or leave it unsaid. :)

The attendant at the gate at the junction London Rd and High St (and New Cut) [streetview] glances only briefly at Benji's invitation before issuing the standard instructions that the driver may drive right up to the castle and then exit the grounds to find a place to park and wait.

The paths inside the castle grounds were never meant for cars, and you have a hard time staying on them and fitting through any arches or features you need to pass, but as soon as you have entered, the rain cuts off —which makes driving easier. The lightning above is muted by whatever is keeping the rain out, but still lights up the castle walls as you approach the drawbridge [streetview] which is probably too narrow to get through.

Benji is free to enter the castle.

Emma instinctively pressed her hand against her chest as a man stepped out of the shadows from BEHIND her. Why hadn’t he announced himself when she approached the castle!?? His cold, detached tone made her uneasy, and she quickly glanced around, to see if any of the other guests were nearby.

"The tour," she said softly, still catching her breath from the surprise "No, it’s fine. Just point me to the main hall where the party is at" The thought of wandering through the castle with this stranger made her skin crawl; she didn’t want to spend another moment in his company, let alone have him show her around.
OOC:
Emma didn't bring a coat or an umbrella. She does have a purse, and would have left it with him if he didn't give her such an icky vibe
