Talking About the Weather (RP)

Federico analyses you for a moment. "I wonder if you know what such an offer actually means." He says. "Debts and favours owed are a big deal in supernatural society." He is watching you carefully as though trying to glean your level of understanding from your reaction.

Alasdair scowls at you and your apparently-flippant demeanour, but does not actually seem to mind your company.

"I was given little choice." He snarls angrily. "The temerity! To accuse me of ... of 'fiddling with the weather'! I did not even know anything was happening till they summoned me to the surface!"

He does not seem put out by the weather, if anything the lack of sunlight could be seen as a benefit to his kind.

"I'm used to being 'in the red'" she merely said. She has seen Eliot treat favors like hard currency in the short time she spent in his company. And though he, and others like him, may think a debt is a 'big deal' in the supernatural world - it is only because they never had to contend with a bank trying to recover their loan. Those could be as ruthless as any Vampire Lord.

"Really? They think you had something to do with the rain?" says Benji, surprised. "Who was it that accused you?"

Federico glances down at your red dress, assessing if your comment was meant as a joke. "Hmm." Is all he says, adding enough inflection that it could be a laugh or just an acknowledgement of your words. He looks doubtful that you actually understand, but knows that experience is the only real teacher in these sorts of things.

"You would have to take that up with your benefactor." He answers your question about someone to look after you. "He might take offence at the appearance that someone is poaching you. And we can't have an indecent at this time." He does not say outright that your life is not worth risking an indecent, that most people here would rather let you die than risk stepping on Elliot's toes... whether you realise this or not is up to you.

"For now, be careful. Don't do anything stupid, and you should be alright. Any overt action would be unwise." If he cares that that still leaves many covert actions involving you, he does not show it —maybe that, too, would be too overt.

"I hope you enjoy the party." Federico says, clearly a farewell, but he hovers for a beat to allow you the chance to ask any questions before he leaves.

"Everyone is crazy." Alasdair says rather manically, dismissing the point of his responsibility. He is arrogant enough it would not occur to him that the suspicion he sensed might not be directed at him specifically but at vampires in general.

Benji hums in agreement. "Indeed! It’s not just the rain, either. A friend of mine recently recovered some sort of object from the Thames and it feels like everyone’s gone mad trying to get their hands on it. Most of them don’t even know what the thing is. I certainly don’t, but I’m hoping there must be someone here who knows… something." Benji doubts Alasdair is caught up on the recent news about the thing Lizabeth found, but he wonders if Alasdair might be old enough to recall something about a powerful magical artifact that was thrown in the Thames long ago.

Emma bristled at the implications of Federico's words. It felt as though he was asserting that she belonged to Eliot, treating her like some sort of an object rather than an individual. Even if his intention was to avoid crossing Eliot, he should have chosen his phrasing with far greater consideration.

"Got it. ‘Shut up and look pretty’" she said with not the slightest hint of sarcasm "It was a pleasure making your acquaintance, Mr. Christobal. Miss Armitage. Enjoy the party."

She waited for them to leave her before scanning the room once again, this time trying to look for a familiar face...

Jacob decides to ignore Crowley's pun about how clever he is. Before they get into a long game of finding out what each other knows, Jacob can't help but notice that he actually does know the woman's face.

"Crowley, I know you're desperate for some social interaction, but if you ask me, I think it was risky of you to take Lady Halifax's face. Tell me, what have you done to her?" he asks. Lady Halifax was a noblewoman, well known in supernatural circles. Some said she was a vampire, but that was never proven, most people thought she was just a mortal with many contacts in every faction.

I'm not rolling Put a Name to a Face, as it doesn't seem to make sense with someone that is not here. A miss (not knowing them or owing them a Debt) would have no real effect

"They used to sacrifice all manner of things to the Thames back when people still knew what was important." Alasdair says. "Not sure it is a good idea to try taking those back.

"What did he find?" He asks, sounding casual, though that might be a smokescreen, but if 'most of them' don't know then that could be useful information if you got it from your friend. You get the feeling Alasdair might know more, even if just general stuff that might guide you along the way.

Federico sighs. He did start the conversation by saying it was going to be awkward and does not appear surprised by your reaction. It looks like he is about to say something along the lines of 'bear my warning in mind' but decides against it and merely bows, turns, and makes his way back to his mistress.

Shelyna, a little ways away, has pointedly ignored the whole interaction. Her back is turned, but it is possible a smidgen of annoyance enters her posture as you call her out like that, but she does not acknowledge you.

Normally one would grab a drink, or circle the food table at a time like this, but that is not an option at this party. Does it strike you as strange that such a normal aspect is absent?

Crowley laughs prettily, drawing some appreciative looks, and also defusing the appearance of tension that might draw looks of a more risky kind.

"Wouldn't you like to know." She says, tapping you on the arm playfully. "And call me Hali, you fool." She whispers as she leans close. "Or you will get us both killed. Or worse, thrown out."

From what you know of Lady Halifax (Hali, as she likes to be known), Crowley is doing an impeccable impersonation, but then he always was good at such things.

"Sure, Hali" Jacob nods, at least everyone will see him using to the famous Lady Halifax, that could surely bring him social benefits (or be a source of future issues if it turns out the real lady is in trouble).

"So, it's been long time no talk. What you've been up to?
OOC:
My objective is to start a conversation that will eventually lead to a negotiation. I want to find out if Crowley has any interesting info that he may want to exchange, and I want to find what he'd be interested in. This may include a lot of back and forth, with many circumventions and stuff... so not sure if you wanna roleplay this out entirely.

'Some party' Emma thought with a sigh. Where was the food? The alcohol? The music and dancing? Everyone seemed so reserved and distant. Maybe that was just how the power players operated—deliberately cold, as if their superiority meant they had to maintain an air of aloofness.

She did spot Benji in the corner, deep in conversation with a vampire who looked like a corpse dug up from a grave. Tangled hair, long fingernails, and clothes that appeared little more than filthy rags, he certainly looked like the type Federico warned her about. Better not to interrupt them, because she had little doubt an 'accident' might occur if she got too close.

But she wasn’t going to stand there alone, either. She came to the party expecting to meet interesting people, and that’s just what she was going to do! Deciding to hunt someone to talk to, she shifted her eyes across the crowd, searching for someone with a more eclectic choice of attire, and a friendlier disposition.

Benji shakes his head. "I don’t know," he says. "Nor does my friend. She was arrested before she could get a proper look at it. She said it was some sort of old copper box— or maybe it was something inside the box— and it zapped her when she tried to open it."

Alasdair shows not interest in the fact that your friend was arrested, and has little to say about some old copper box.

He lives in the sewers so he sees all manner of things flowing down to the Thames, It would not surprise him at all that something important might end up there, but his ramblings about the river suggest that it is equally possible that this item was buried for ages and uncovered by the unseasonable amount of rain, or that it recently washed down there, either way it could have come from anywhere: Londinium was a Roman city and all the waterways eventually lead to the Thames.

Crowley is not likely to spill his business to you, of all people, unless there is benefit for him. So you need to take anything he says with a grain of salt.

"The 'weather' has been good for business." He admits, possibly because you might already know some of this, but also to suggest that his benefit makes him neither culpable nor responsible for said weather issues. "Like rats fleeing a sinking ship, some people have 'wanted out'." He does not specify if that is 'out of the city' or 'out of the country', or, as is possible given your shared special nature, 'out of this world', but you know that he has some skills in smuggling people.

"The borders are getting crowded, and there are a lot of people watching, making it more complicated." At this he accidentally glances at a group in a far corner, one of them looks familiar, though it takes you a moment to recognise Nigel Crane, he has aged a lot in the intervening years since you last met —mortals are so transient— and if the Surveyors were not already on your mind you might not have recognised him at all, at least for a while.

Emma’s gaze settled on the only man standing apart from the crowd. He was an unassuming figure—short, with bugged eyes, and a bit lanky, wearing jeans, a half-tucked plaid shirt, and a bright red baseball hat. He flashed a toothy smile when their eyes met, but he exuded too much an aura of an outcast, and she couldn’t shake the feeling that being seen with him would raise eyebrows.

'Screw it' she thought. Eliot was supposed to be here, or at least have someone introduce her to the others. Huffing inwardly to herself, she straightened her shoulders and made her way toward a couple standing nearby; the handsome man in a tailored business suit, and the woman in a stunning black dress that was almost as provocative as Emma’s.

"Hi, I’m sorry to bother you" she said, adopting a slightly vulnerable demeanor, lowering her voice and biting her lip for effect "Have either of you seen Mr. Parry tonight? Eliot Parry?"

"My dear." Hali exclaims welcomingly. "Demure just does not suit you. Not in that dress. You must tell me where you got it."

When you ask about Elliot Parry her face makes a moue of distaste. "That popinjay? He is not here. But why would someone of your ... obvious qualities want to find a trumped-up bloodsucker like him? Especially when you could spend your time with moi."

She holds out her hand, palm down and tilted inwards, if this were a play —and you were a prince or a knight— it would be perfectly positioned for you to kiss it. She does not mention her name, possibly because she assumes everybody knows it.

As much as Benji would like to hide in the corner with Alasdair for the rest of the party, that’s not what he came here to do. "Well, it’s been nice to talk to you," he says to Alasdair. "If you hear anything about the box, I’d be very grateful if you let me know."

He surveys the crowd, trying to decide who to ask about the box next, when he spots the familiar-looking woman in the suit again. He’s almost certain he’s met her before…
