Talking About the Weather (RP)

Shelyna Artmitage steps up to the microphone, she seems to be running this event.

Emma, how does it make you feel that the woman in charge deemed you worthy of sending her aid to talk to you and warn you? How do you feel about your handling of that? Handling that could easily be construed as rude?

"I don't mean to sound British." Shelyna opens with a joke. "But we need to talk about the weather." She waits a moment for any titters of laughter to die down. For all her power and confidence she is not actually a very good public speaker, having very little patience for the niceties of small-talk and inconsequentialities.

"It is clear that the weather has been messed with." She states. "No matter how much many of us want to deny it. If it were just rain, maybe we could overlook it, but if this continues we face real danger to our city, our country, and our way of life, the infrastructure can not sustain this for long."

She looks around at the gathered people of power and consequence in the country. "If anyone has anything useful to tell us..." she emphasises 'useful' in a vain attempt to avoid exactly what comes next...

There is a clamour for attention. As always, the loudest are the first to speak, but, as usual, they don't always have the most considered or coherent responses. Chief among the theories are that the vampires are to blame —'they never liked the sunshine!'— and the French —'see how the rain stops at the channel!'— and some other, much more bizarre theories (someone always blames 'aliens').

Typical. The woman who had completely ignored Emma and refused to utter a single word in her direction was the one running the show. Emma didn't regret how she conducted herself in their prior 'conversation'. Shelyna did treat her like she was beneath contempt, and Emma was too proud to prostrate herself before her, even if she was 'mighty and powerful'

The one thing she did regret was not paying closer attention to David’s stories. He had gone on and on these last few weeks about the areas hardest hit by the storm and which parts of the city were now flooded. While it hadn’t pointed her directly to the culprits, it could have offered valuable clues. Perhaps she would ask him about it later—unless, of course, the mystery was resolved that very evening.

Without any valuable input of her own to offer, she glanced around the room instead, scrutinizing everyone’s reactions. Who seemed defensive? Did their responses feel rehearsed or genuine? It was likely that some of them held more information than they were letting on. By simply observing, she might uncover a secret or two.

Benji continues talking to Alasdair in a low voice under the cacophony of opinions and arguments echoing around the ballroom. "Well, no one is going to make you, if you don’t want to, but I think Miss Artmitage is right. Your input would be very valuable. You’ve lived in London longer than almost anyone else here and you probably know the city better than the rest of us put together."

Jacob simply listens to the uproar that ensued following Shelyna's declaration, attempting to gauge the audience's reactions through their body language rather than their spoken words. It's evident that the one responsible for tampering with the weather will remain silent (if they are present in the room at all), leaving him puzzled as to why Shelyna has chosen to be so straightforward.
OOC:
Jacob might step in later, but for now, he prefers to observe and gather information.

"Messing with the weather? Making people think it is no big deal? Isn't it obvious who's done it?" Alasdair whispers to you. "It's those damned faeries! They are always doing such things."

Alasdair has been underground for decades, he does not know that 'fairies' are not a thing anymore —nor that that terms is considered offensive by some. He finds it unbelievable that they are gone and will not be dissuaded from his position that this is their work.

Shelyna glances over at you at one point, clearly hoping for some input. Looking around you notice that —in Elliot's absence— Alasdair is probably the highest Status vampire here, his opinion would hold some weight.

There is a lot of shouting, but you —for personal reasons— notice a large proportion of the targets of people's ire are 'the demons'.

"So, that is why we were excluded." Crowley-Hali mutters under her breath. "Do you know anything about this?" He does not expect much of an answer from you, he knows that the both of you are at a bit of a remove from general demon-society.

Emma didn’t come to the party to serve as Eliot’s eye candy. She didn’t want to be treated as little more than an accessory or a pretty face, nor was she content with merely observing the creatures of the night from a distance. She wanted to be a part of the world. To be taken seriously, rather than dismissed with the patronizing concern over the possibility of needing to scrape her off the floor.

The blonde’s eyes darted around the room, scanning the strange figures of the crowd. There had to be someone here who possessed knowledge about the calamitous weather. Maybe that person was deliberately keeping quiet, or maybe they were trying to redirect the blame onto someone else entirely. But there had to be someone. If she could but identify the right individual, she could leverage that information to her own advantage. The thought of turning their secrets into a form of power thrilled her more than the mystery itself. She didn’t need to solve the riddle of the tempest; she wanted to manipulate it.

Minutes slipped by as the people suggested one option after another, and Emma felt no closer to her goal. She wasn’t a behavioral psychologist or a detective; even if she were, the strange nuances of the eccentric guests made it nearly impossible to draw any meaningful conclusions. Just as she was about to resign herself to defeat, she caught sight of Lady Halifax standing nearby.

Hadn’t ‘Hali’ mentioned being more interested in what others had to say about the unfolding situation? She recalled Hali suggested finding something more entertaining to occupy their time too. She seemed oddly disinterested in the proceedings, maybe because she had some deeper knowledge of what was going on?

She couldn’t confront her directly—not yet. But maybe she could probe her later. Carefully.

Benji catches Shelyna’s eye across the room and shakes his head, letting her know that Alasdair probably won’t be speaking. Even if he did speak, Benji isn’t sure anyone would believe him, regardless of his status among the vampires.

"It’s been quite a long time since any of the Fair Folk were last seen in London…" Benji says carefully, not outright rejecting Alasdair’s theory, but not yet agreeing with it either. "What makes you think it was them?"

Shelyna looks ... upset? disappointed? worried? ... definitely not happy at your 'failure'. She had high hopes for you, but now it looks like she may be reconsidering, and this may spill over into your next meeting.

"Because it's what they do." Alasdair says, ignoring your statement that it has been a long time since they were seen.

"Hiding and messing with unsuspecting people? Well, that works better when they are don't believe you exist." You know he is not talking about fairies anymore —or not only about them— Alasdair has never agreed with the vampires who live semi-openly, and this is probably one of the reasons he does not want to speak in front of a crowd of 'others'.

"The best way to counter the tricks of the 'fair folk'," he says this last with clear derision in his voice, "is to recognise their actions. 'Milk does not turn sour overnight on its own', you know." This last sounds like 'old wive's tales', old even in your day. While you predate Louis Pasteur, Appert's method for bottling food was in common use in your time, though some still argue that that was to keep the fairies out and proved it by making better systems using tin-coated iron to drive them away.

"You can tell them." Alasdair says, delegating his authority in this to you.

Hali whispers something in Jacob's ear, then turns and, seeing you watching, gives you a voluptuous smile.

You do not know her well enough to have put a face to a name or a name to a face, but you recall that you do know someone who has spoken of 'Lady Halifax' as someone they wanted you to meet. It seems she is worth meeting after all, that there is more to this Lady than just an 'aristocratic socialite'.

Who was it that pushed for you to meet her? Your boss? That boor Godfrey? Surely not David? Someone else?

Maybe you don't need that introduction anymore? You have your own 'in' with the lady. But that might mean taking her up on her offer of 'a back-stage pass' tonight.

Jacob nods at Crowley, but is otherwise silent. Emma is still there, and he doesn't want to give himself away. And suddenly this soiree has become a very dangerous place for two demons like them. Jacob has seen this a thousand times before. If these were ordinary people instead of supernatural beings, they'd be already gathering pitchforks and torches.

Of course, Crowley is not worried, because he trusts his disguise. And probably few people know Jacob's true nature now, so he should be relatively safe if he keeps a low profile. Which would mean forgetting about Crowley's treasure hunt. Yes, that would be the wisest thing to do. Then why does Jacob feel the urge to follow his adversary on this silly adventure?

Still waiting yo see how the conversation unfolds in the main room. More even so, now that they're starting to blame the demons...

Emma heard countless names in her profession, so many that she struggled to keep track of them all. She vaguely recalled Thompson pitching writing a piece on some 'Lady Halifax', as a fashion icon and an 'aristocratic socialite'. Her boss had a brash suggestion about ambushing her and trying to interview her while she was staying at the Ritz. And she said 'no', because she still had a shred of self-respect.

She wasn’t a paparazzi, or celebrity sleuth who had nothing better to do than write about the lives and scandals of public figures. There wasn’t really a story there. It’s not like writing about home décor, relationships or the newest nightclubs, was that much more glamorous, but at least it wasn’t tabloid gossip.

But that was before Emma knew Halifax was connected somehow to the supernatural world. Maybe getting to know her better wasn’t such a bad idea after all. At the very least, she would make Thompson happy.

Smiling faintly at Halifax in return, she went back to listening to the ongoing conversation. Someone else might still volunteer some interesting tidbit of information, and she didn’t want to miss it.

Benji hesitates. ‘Because it’s what they do’ is hardly a compelling argument. In fact, it’s almost exactly what everyone else is saying about vampires and demons and whomever else they wish to blame. Still, he trusts Alasdair’s instincts…

"Okay," he reluctantly agrees. "I’ll speak for you. But I don’t know that anyone will listen to me..."

Stepping out of Alasdair’s corner, he clears his throat, trying to get the room’s attention so that he may speak.

Shelyna looks relived when you step forward, she does not look at all put out by your assuming the right to speak for Alasdair... and, by extension, for the vampires.

At her almost-imperceptible gesture, someone slides up to you and holds out a microphone for you to use. If you don't take it they will hold it by your mouth (many here don't understand the technology, though, as a performer, you may have learned the benefit of sound systems).

All the faces of the most powerful people in London... no make that the most powerful people in England... turn towards you, focused and ready to listen to your words...

"Wait... Isn't that Benji?", Jacob raises an eyebrow, surprised that his friend is taking the floor.
Nov 5, 2024 3:01 am
Benji takes the microphone (he does, in fact, know what a microphone is). He doesn’t usually suffer from stage fright, but this isn’t exactly his usual stage. "I-if I may speak on behalf of my good friend, Alasdair," he stutters. "He strongly believes that the rain is the work of the Fair Folk. They have a close connection with the natural world and the weather, after all, and would certainly have the power to influence these things. It’s true that they haven’t been seen in London in a very long time, but that doesn’t mean they’re dead or gone for good. For all we know, they have only retreated to the Land of Faery for a time and this rain is a herald—or a symptom—of their return."

Your words cause an uproar, with many denying outright that they are possible ("We drove them out!", "They are not back!" and so on), but some are looking scared ("We drove them out.", "They are not back?").

Shelyna is one of the ones who look shaken by this, but it is almost like she is not completely surprised, like she was expecting something like this... or dreading it, more like.

"Thank you, Benji." She says after a moment, trying to regain control of the meeting. "We must consider all options. The facts certainly bear out your position." She is treating this like your opinion rather than just words you are relaying, but this could be a good thing if it turns out to be correct, and you could wriggle out of it if it turns out to be the foolishness of an old vampire.

"We should all use whatever means we have to look into all the possibilities... Yes, even the Fae," She says firmly to one objector. "If we are looking into 'aliens' then we should also look into 'fairies'." You don't think she is planning on looking into 'aliens', but these words at least quest that one loud objector.

"If we set aside our petty rivalries." She instantly regrets the use of the word 'petty', but it is too late to take it back. "... and work together, sharing what we can discover, we can prepare to fight this."

"How can we fight 'fairies'?!" Someone shouts back. "We are not equipped for that anymore!" And the meeting devolves into posturing and declarations of 'I am not scared', but many have heard the message and might band together (unless they find a way to exploit the situation for their own gains):.

"'Fairies'?" Hali ponders. "Well, that is better than 'demons', I suppose."

The reason this is 'better than demons' is clear to Jacob but might not be so clear to Emma, though they definitely sounds less scary.

The main talks are over. Everyone is free to wander.

Benji gives the microphone back to the attendant and looks to Alasdair for approval. "How did I do? I hope I didn’t sound too nervous... I’ve never done much public speaking before."

- Benji -

"Huh?" Alasdair says distractedly. He was not listening and was instead hungrily watching a woman in a red dress, both the red dress and the woman are known to you.

Emma is near (maybe with) Jacob, but you never got round to introducing them, so you don't know if he is looking out for her. Elliot still has not shown his face, which makes the vampires look bad, but also means Emma is vulnerable to poachers.
