Talking About the Weather (RP)

Benji follows Alasdair’s gaze and hastily steps to the side, blocking Alasdair’s view of Emma. "No," he says, sternly. "You’re not to bite Emma. Elliot would be very cross and so would I."

He glances over his shoulder and realises that Emma is standing with Jacob and… is that Lady Halifax? "Oh, it seems she’s met Jacob already! I’m going to go say hello, I think. Would you like to—?" He cuts himself off. He’d been about to invite Alasdair to join him but given the way he’s staring at Emma, perhaps that isn’t the best idea. "Never mind. Have a nice night, Alasdair!"

Alasdair growls in frustration at the restriction of 'not biting people'. For a moment he clearly forgot he is not hidden in his dark, underground lair where people can go missing with no one the wiser. He has not adapted well to the new world order. He also resents the mention of 'Elliot', but that does bring him to heel... for the moment.

"Whatever." He says, using the modern vernacular quite well. He looks distastefully at the rest of the group, not looking much happier at the sight of Lady Halifax (the mortal) than Jacob (the demon), but he turns away, lost and unhappy to be here.

The way the crowd reacted made it clear that the "fairies" they were talking about weren’t the delicate, butterfly-winged beings she had read about in childhood stories. She could already tell from their reactions—half awed, half fearful—that these creatures were something much darker, far removed from the harmless, whimsical fae of fairy tales. There were hundreds of different types of Fae she'd come across in books, ranging from mischievous sprites to the terrifying, bloodthirsty entities, but her 'knowledge' came straight out of the pages of literal faerie tales. The Fae of the real world could be nothing like them. Whatever they were like, she was curious to know more, maybe even meet one - as long as she could do so without losing her life in the process.

Once again, the uncomfortable sensation of someone watching her with unsettling intensity returned. She tried to ignore the hungry gaze of the shabby man standing next to Benji, but it was hard to shake the feeling that she was a potential meal. She did dress to attract a vampire tonight, but this man wasn’t the kind of vampire she’d planned for. He looked more like a corpse that had crawled out of its grave, and it took everything in her not to flinch when his gaze locked with hers, like a predator eyeing its prey.

Shaking off the chill creeping down her spine, she focused on something—someone—else.
"Do you know much about fairies? Or demons?" she asked Hali, trying to sound as casual as she could, though her eyes darted to Benji, silently pleading him to join them

"Demons? Yes, I have some familiarity." Hali says with a mischievous grin. "But fairies? They are right," she indicates the people claiming the impossibility of that idea.

"There haven't been fairies in England since the werewolf wars." She says thoughtfully, then hastily adds: "But that was around twenty years ago, so I don't really know anything about that." It is not inconceivable that Hali has had some work done, but she still can't be much older than yourself, so she obviously would not have much firsthand knowledge of events from two decades ago, still you suspect she knows more, if only you can get her to talk.

Benji makes his way across the room to join Emma and Jacob. He acknowledges Lady Halifax with a polite bow, before greeting his friends. "Jacob! You’ve met Emma! Isn’t she great? And did she tell you she’s a writer? I wonder if you stock her book in your shop…" To Emma, he says, "It’s good to see you again! How are you enjoying the ‘party’ so far?"
Nov 6, 2024 3:08 pm
""No fairies... anywhere in England?" Emma was half-incredulous, half skeptical. "And what were these... 'werewolf wars'? What was that all about?"

Her curiosity was piqued, but she was also a little irked. Every answer Hali gave only opened the door to ten more questions. It was as if she was enjoying dropping these strange names and cryptic references just to see Emma struggle to keep up, deliberately trying to make her feel small and out of her depth. And the fact is that she DID feel exposed and vulnerable, but she wasn’t going to show it to her. She was therefore happy to see Benji finally joining them, greeting the vampire with a smile of relief:

"Hi, Benji!" she greeted him warmly "Oh, yes. The party’s been great. Met a lot of interesting people. Learned more in the last hour than I ever thought I would"

She stopped to glance at Hali, and back at him "How are you doing? I don’t suppose you know why Elliot hasn’t shown up, do you?" she tried not to look too concerned, but it was Eliot who was the one to invite her, and the one who vouched for her safety. And yet, here she was, alone in a room full of vampires assessing her from every corner, with no sign of him "It’s not like him at all, to miss a gathering like this"

- Emma -

"Not in front of the ampirevey." Hali says in a mock whisper as Benji walks up. It is fully possible she is using this as an excuse to not reveal more information now that you are on the hook. This also suggests that neither she nor Jacob are vampires.

"It does seem rather strange that he would miss the meeting entirely…" Benji agrees with Emma. "Have you tried calling him?"
Nov 7, 2024 10:53 am
"I'm sure someone has. Unless these hidebound organisers forgot that was even an option." Hali says, though she does not seem to care either way.

"I think the conversational potential of this room is exhausted." She remarks. "I was going to take a look around, if anyone wants to join me." This invitation is clearly directed at Jacob and Emma, and does not include Benji, Jacob would need to vouch for Benji, or Emma would need to insist he come with (as her protection, maybe), or both, if we want to have everyone participate in her caper.

OOC:
I think it unlikely that Benji has a direct number for Elliot, it sounds like he would need to go through an underling or wait to be summoned? Emma very likely has the number for Elliot's actual cell phone (or one of them?), but her phone is locked away with her purse?

If anyone does call Elliot's direct number it just rings and rings. If you call 'the office' (or whatever we are calling his underlings/minions) they believe he is at the soirée.

"My purse is in the cloakroom. Would you mind giving him a call?" she begged Benji. She was concerned about what happened to Eliot - not because she had any soft spot for the narcissistic vampire lord, but because she was worried for her own safety. His inexplicable absence didn't leave her comfortable enough to venture the castle with Hali, whom she just met, and knew next to nothing about

"It was a pleasure meeting you, Lady Halifax" she smiled thinly at the woman "I would have been happy to join you, but I have to find out what happened to Eliot first"

"Darling, I wouldn't advise wandering these rooms alone," Jacob remarks. His enthusiasm for Emma joining Crowley's plans is lacking, but he can't leave her behind. Besides, she's Benji's friend. "Actually, you both should join us. Elliot can manage on his own," he concludes, shrugging.

"I don’t have his phone number but you can use my phone if you can remember the number off the top of your head," says Benji. "Otherwise, I could call Teddy or we could go back to the cloakroom to get your phone."

Benji looks to Emma for a decision. He’s happy to join Hali and Jacob (though he isn’t quite sure what it is they’re doing exactly), but if Emma wants to remain behind and figure out what’s happened to Elliot, he will stay and help her with that.
Nov 9, 2024 4:31 pm
"I don't remember his phone number, no" she sighed inwardly to herself as she considered her options. If something DID happen to Eliot, it was in her interest to 'get the ins' with someone else. And with Benji accompanying them, she would feel that much less at risk
"Alright. Maybe a short tour around the castle. But give a quick call to Teddy, if it's not too much trouble?"
Nov 11, 2024 5:12 am
"Of course!" Benji pulls out his phone and dials Teddy’s number.

"Hi Teddy!" he says, as soon as the other vampire picks up. "How are you? Say, you wouldn’t happen to know where Elliot is, would you? He’s missed the whole big meeting thing."

- Benji -

"Benji, hello. I am well, how are you?" Teddy says when he can get a word in. He does not usually reveal information about his boss's whereabouts, so the fact that he answers you means he really likes you.

"Elliot took the car down to Arundel, for a ball." He explains before you explain that that is the 'big meeting' you were talking about and you are there.

Once you have established to his satisfaction that you are sure Elliot is not there and avoiding you (mentioning that Emma is with you makes that pretty clear) Teddy becomes concerned. "I told him not to take the sports car, in this weather." He says, sounding a lot like a parent talking about an irresponsible child.

"Give me a moment. Let me check the location beacon..." You hear Teddy typing —extremely slowly— on a keyboard. "That's strange." He says. "I don't understand these things, but that car apparently has all the bells and whistles. Emergency beacons for accidents and hijacking and everything, but none of those have gone off, and the location is saying ... 'not found'. You are not supposed to be able to turn that off?"

If asked, Teddy does not know how to get the last known location (if that is possible with this system).

Teddy's —normally slow and calm— voice is becoming agitated. "I need to call ... people." He says, not really being equipped to deal with issues on this level. "Can you check and see if the boss ... Can you find him?" It sounded like he wanted to ask you to check if Elliot had arrived, at the gate or at the castle, but you know everyone in charge already said he is not at the castle and can assume they checked with the gate (if you do ask, this will be confirmed, neither Elliot nor his car were seen anywhere near Arundel).

What do you do?
OOC:
Anyone who wants to is free to define what Elliot's sports car looks like (colour/make/model/whatever). All I know is that it is flashy and indiscreet and hard to miss, people would see it and take some notice.

It is not practical nor easy to use in London, so it is not a big surprise that Elliot takes any opportunity to drive it himself when he needs to leave the busy city.

• Do we think it is notable that he did not try to impress Emma with his ... well you know that they call sports cars...?

Benji lowers the phone for a moment to relay this information to everyone else: "Teddy says Elliot is supposed to be here right now and that the tracker thingamajig in his car isn’t working."

Resuming his conversation with Teddy, he responds, "Find him? Well, I was just about to go for a walk around the castle, so I’ll keep an eye out for him, but it really seems like he never got here… You might want to send someone down to Arundel to check he hasn’t been in a car accident on the way or something but, other than that, I really wouldn’t know where to look."

- Benji -

"Uh? Yes. I'll do that." Teddy says, apparently glad to have someone telling him what to do.

Hali has been listening carefully, trying to look mildly interested, but this information that someone as powerful and significant to the London supernatural as Elliot scene is missing feeds into her mechanism of power (knowing things) and her hunger for such things. You are good at picking up on people's hungers.

What do you do?

"This can’t be good" If the tracker in his Jaguar wasn’t responding, it could only mean one thing: foul play. Someone had deliberately tampered with it, which meant it couldn't be a mere accident. It wasn’t entirely surprising someone was out to get him. Eliot wasn’t exactly known for being particularly friendly. She was sure he had made himself lots of enemies, but even so, her dislike for him didn’t blind her to the broader consequences of his disappearance. The power vacuum left in his wake could be catastrophic.

Benji told her all about Eliot's brutal rise to power. If he was gone, it would leave a gaping hole at the top of the vampire hierarchy, one that any number of ambitious pretenders to the throne would rush to fill. There would be blood on the streets, unless he somehow miraculously reappears before sunrise.

"Traffic on the way here was diverted today because of an overturned lorry. You think it might have had something to do with it?"
Nov 11, 2024 11:35 pm
"Alright, thanks, Teddy! I’ll call you back if I find him," Benji promises before hanging up the phone.

"I suppose it’s possible..." Benji answers Emma with a shrug. "But one might also chalk that up to slippery roads. From what Teddy was saying about the tracker, it sounds like Elliot’s practically vanished off the face of the earth." He can tell Emma’s worried about this so he tries not to sound too pleased about it. All of this is, of course, rather unlucky timing for Benji, financially speaking, since he hasn’t had a chance to ask Elliot to pay him back for Emma’s dress yet, but if the Vampire Lord really is gone… well, good riddance.
Nov 13, 2024 8:38 pm
Lady Halifax is a little surprised that Benji has somehow become part of her caper, but Jacob and Emma are able to convince her that he needs to come along.

Her irritation at his taking the protector role for Emma away from her is slightly offset by her interest in what else she can learn about Elliot by having Benji along: Knowledge is power.
