Talking About the Weather (RP)

Poor Bev. She didn't deserve this. If her girlfriend wanted to dump her, she should have done it face-to-face. It shouldn't have taken more courage than fighting actual demons, right? She squeezed softly on Bev's palm again, covering their clasped hands with her second.
"Bev" she sighed softly "I'm so sorry"

That note about 'having to skip town' might had something to do with her girlfriend's line of work? Her life must be fraught in constant danger. Maybe she was in such a hurry to leave to protect Bev's life? It was pure conjecture, but this is not why she decided not to bring it up. Bev's girlfriend still decided to leave, without an explanation, and not for the first time. She didn't want Bev holding on to a flicker of hope, waiting for her girlfriend to come back to 'screw her', only to leave again in the morning. If she'll be coming back at all.

The best thing she could do was move on, and find someone who truly appreciated her. Practical advice and some perspective would have to wait till later, however. Bev needed her for something else right now. She needed her to listen. To stay with her while she vented her emotions. Merely being there was the best way to show her that she cared about her. "It's okay" she whispered softly when tears welled up from Bev's eyes "I'm here for you"

"I didn't call you to complain about my love life." Bev lies and then proceeds to focus the conversation on that aspect.

"Rhiannon" she says, which you think is the name of her hunter x, "came to see me yesterday with a vampire in need of healing. Apparently he had been fighting demons with her? And got hit in the head." This sound suspiciously like this 'Benji' character you saw earlier today, he had a head-wound, but it was almost completely healed baring the slight scar and missing hair, so probably not?

"I know it is my fault. I should have known better, and I was pushing rather hard." Bev says, back on the topic of her girlfriend. "Rhi agreed to coffee this morning. She looked tired and I got protective, you know how I can get." She avoids using the term 'maternal' when talking about her girlfriend. "Then I went with her to class, and then afterwards we went to her place, and ... you know." Bev says. "I shouldn't have, but could not resist. Then, afterwards, when I woke up, nothing but this note."

She shows you the note, carefully folded in her handbag. It is sweet, and apologetic, and seems genuine, but all you know about this 'Rhiannon' is that she broke Bev's heart before, also vanishing for 'work reasons' that Bev blamed herself for.

Upon leaving his meeting with Elliot, Benji is perplexed to find that Emma is nowhere to be seen. He notices the sticky note on the door and, figuring that whatever he was supposed to be helping Emma with can wait, decides to head back to his apartment to check on Lizabeth. On the way, he sends Emma a text:

Hello Emma!
This is Benji. Elliot told me I was supposed to ‘get you sorted out for the ball’? I don’t really know what that means but if you need anything from me, you can reach me at this number.

He also sends one to Jacob:

Hello Jacob!
I’ve finished my meeting with Elliot, but I’d like to go back to my apartment for a bit to check on Lizabeth and get some sleep myself. Perhaps we could meet up at Hyde Park later this afternoon?

"It's NOT your fault" she didn't just say it to make Bev feel better about herself. It really did upset her to hear her friend disparaging herself like this "It is not inappropriate to worry about someone you care about. It is not 'being pushy' to want to protect them from physical violence, and intimacy is part of any healthy relationship. You did NOTHING wrong"

Emma paused when she concluded her tirade, her face suddenly growing pale. Would someone have this conversation, using these exact words, to comfort David one day? I shouldn't be here...

"Bev....I'm sorry. I got to go. David is waiting for me" she got up to her feet and nodded at the woman "You're taking a day off tomorrow" her tone of voice didn't make it sound like a suggestion "Join me and Benji. We're going shopping, and I need a woman's eye when I try on some dresses. Maybe we will get something for you too. What do you say?"

"I took the day off today!" Bev wails. "To spend time with Rhi. But I will see what I can do."

She does not notice, at this time, that you mentioned Benji, and she neglected to answer your question about who her vampire was. So unless you bring it up, she might be surprised if she joins you tomorrow for dress shopping.

"Good!" Emma considered it a done deal "Tomorrow at Pinko. Ten o'clock"
Bev didn't say anything when she mentioned Benji, so he must not be the Vampire she allowed to feed on her? The odds of two vampires suffering head injuries within the span of a few days sounded pretty slim to Emma, but who was she to tell? Maybe having your head bashed in was not that uncommon of an occurrence in vampiric society. Definitely something she should inquire with Benji, tomorrow.
"Hang in there" she leaned to kiss Bev on her cheek, tapping her shoulder gently, before hurrying out of the coffee shop.

It was less than a minute walk to her apartment. A little over a minute, including the short pause to text Benji back before walking through the front door:
Quote:
"Hi Benji! Sorry for leaving in such a hurry. I got loads of questions about the ball, and Elliot did promise to pay for my dress. Would you like to meet me tomorrow at Pinko?"
Sep 1, 2024 12:43 pm
Benji writes back: Certainly!

And then, a few minutes later: What is Pinko?

When Benji arrives back at his apartment, he hurries up to his apartment on the third floor to check on Lizabeth.

- Benji -

You get a few funny looks from the other building residents when you head up to your apartment, but that is not that unusual.

You have not been gone lone, and Lizabeth is still fussing with Hermes who does not want to eat, and is, slowly, exploring your living room.

Benji greets all his neighbours with a chipper ‘good morning!’, apparently oblivious to the strange looks he’s receiving.

"It’s just me," he says to avoid startling Lizabeth as he walks into his apartment. "Sorry that I had to leave you like that. Do you want anything to eat? I don’t have much human food, I’m afraid… Just tea and biscuits, mostly. I could order takeaway if you’re hungry?"
Sep 3, 2024 1:45 pm
- Benji -

Lizabeth is a lot happier now that you are around, she knows you and trust you. "Your friend gave me tea." She says. "But the prison food was awful. I could murder a fish and chips?"

She sits down on Hermes, who does not seem to mind and continues his perambulations around your flat.

(• Do you even know how to order deliveries? :)

Emma found her husband by the kitchen worktop, busy chopping vegetables for their salad. He hadn't noticed her coming in - the constant drumming of raindrops and the patter against the windows made it nearly impossible to hear the door creaking slightly as she pushed it open. Leaving her coat on the hanger, she fought the urge to sneak up behind him and warp her arms around his waist. It wasn't smart to surprise someone holding a sharp knife.

"Hi! I'm home!!" she ran her fingers through her damp hair to sort it out before striding into their living space and falling into her husband's arms, pecking him gently on his lips "How was your day?"

David studies your face for a long time before replying, long enough that it almost becomes awkward.

"It's been a hell of a day." He replies. You know he does not like to burden you with his work problems. "I have been seconded back to Climate Action to deal with all the rain. I want to tackle the long-term issues but have been running around dealing with flooding." He looks tired, but happy.

"We were all called in for tomorrow evening as well." He says, almost giving you a convenient excuse for cancelling, but then he proudly continues. "I had to trade two weeks of scutwork with Jenkins to get out of it."

"Sounds like it. It's been raining for so long I almost forgot how sunshine looks like" it was a long stretch of bad weather. Not THAT unusual, considering this was England. Still, she couldn't help but feel something was off. Maybe because it kept on raining nonstop, with the cloudy skies the color of black tar suffocating the city with bleak darkness.

She stalled for a bit, looking out the big glass windows at the drops of rain before turning to look back at her husband. This was difficult. David was so kind, and they haven't seen his parents in a long while. She knew they drove a long way and were looking forward to see their daughter in law. She would disappointing them as well. For a moment, she considered telling Elliot she couldn't make it after all. He would probably be angry. Maybe angry enough to hurt her. But that wasn't the thing that terrified her.

"Remember Mr. Parry?" she started hesitatingly "The businessman I've been interviewing for my next book? I met with him today, and he extended an invite to attend the Legacy Ball tomorrow evening. Everyone who's everyone is going to be there" she paused and looked pleadingly into his eyes. He could already infer her next words, but she didn't want to let them left unspoken: "I really need to go. It's important, also for my career as a journalist" calling herself a journalist was a stretch. Her writing in the Independent amounted to a relationship advice column, a few articles about fashion, and reviews of local nightclubs. Still, if she was in the company of important and powerful people she was bound to hear something interesting. Maybe something that one day will make it to the front page.

Benji frowns at his phone, uncertain where to begin. Is there a number he’s supposed to call? He’s seen Rhiannon order food before, but he’s pretty sure she used an app… After a few seconds, he sheepishly surrenders his phone to Lizabeth. "…It’s probably easier if you do it."

While she orders food for herself, Benji vanishes into the bathroom to finally wash off the grime and dust from the tunnels and change into a clean set of clothes. When the food arrives, he runs downstairs to collect it and brings it back up to Lizabeth. He warms up one of the spare blood bags he keeps in the fridge in the microwave and pours it into a chipped teacup to sip while Lizabeth eats her chips. "Tell me about what happened when you were arrested," he suggests. "Who spoke to you? What sort of questions did they ask you?"

David looks shocked, and possibly angry, about this news. "We have been planning this for ages!" He exclaims. "You know how important this is to them. You promised!"

This tension has been building for a while, and David has been very patient with your 'career', but that patience may be reaching an end.

- Benji and Jacob -

"I don't know who they first guys were. The guys who grabbed me at the river." Lizabeth explains as she eats with her fingers. "They took me to a unpleasant building and asked me question that did not make sense." From a little probing it seems like these might have been the sorts of questions one asks a spy?

"Then the police showed up and there was a row. Jure-is-my-dick-tion, crap." She tries to joke. "And I was taken away, blues-and-twos style. Then the cops asked me much the same types of questions about what I found, how long I had had it, what I was doing with it..."

Lizabeth looks slightly panicked by this whole affair. "I don't even know what it was." She wails. "I didn't see it, just an old, copper box, I think..." —this sounds like it could be what Jacob saw on her phone— "... but I think someone tasered me, or something, right before I opened it."

She does not know where the box ended up.
The first guys who grabbed her wore suits, but she thinks there may have been some 'army' uniforms around the place.

"I know!" Emma was every bit as exasperated as David. Not at her husband, but from the tension of being forced to choose between one of the options. Disappointing her husband wasn't easy for her either "But it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. There won't be another invite if I turn this one down!" She tried to justify herself - to both of them.

"Tell you what" she sighed softly, laying her hand over his chest "They aren't going back to Birmingham until the day after tomorrow, right? I could spend the day with them. Go to the British Museum? Take them out to lunch before they leave?" she was more than happy to spend time with her in-laws, even if it meant putting her investigations on hold for a bit. Just not tomorrow evening. She HAD to get her foot in the door first.

Jacob smiles following the poor joke about jurisdiction, simply to reassure Lizabeth and encourage her to proceed with her tale. As she reaches the part about the object she discovered, his interest is piqued.

"Can you describe this copper box? Did it have any inscriptions or drawings on it?" he inquires.
Sep 7, 2024 12:40 am
Hearing Lizabeth’s story, Benji wonders if the police might not have the object, after all. Perhaps whoever ‘zapped’ Lizabeth (assuming it was even a person) stole the object before the police ever got there? If that’s the case, Benji wonders if there might be some way to track them down… "Was there anyone nearby when you found the box? Did you see anyone else down on the riverbank with you?"

"They are going to be very disappointed. They came here specially to spend time with you." David reminds you. "But they would love for you to show them around London, especially the museum. That 'culture journalist' part of your writing is something they understand," he does not mean to be disparaging about your desire to write novels, he is always very supportive, but parents worry about future prospects and such. "They wouldn't care for the night-clubs, but museums and art shows and such interest them... well, you won't get dad to an art show, but he loves a good museum."

David is not prone to the 'guilt trip', but you can tell that letting them down again day-after-tomorrow would be bad.
