The Pitch
Deep in the eternal darkness of the Void of Corax sits a space hulk. The infamous blend of metal and spite is known to all among the fallen angels as The Trial of the Gods. It is the domain of the Warmaster Aelianus Augustus, former legionary master of the scouts for the Ultramarines. A man of wise tactics and an iron fist.
Five thousand years ago, Aelianus recognised the need for potential. If true faith and piety were to be shown to the gods of ruin, proper trained soldiers were needed to. He found the hulk and turned it into his kingdom of blood and ritual, forging a battelground for the elite.
He dubbed it a Skull Harvest, an open challenge to all the champions of their dark masters. Once a decade they would gather and do battle, and the winner would take the spoils, the soldiers and the momentum to deal death and destruction to the puppets of the Corpse Emperor.
This decade is no different. Warriors gather, some with warbands to prove and others as guns for hire. A bloody battle is promised, but who will emerge victorious.
Rules Version
We’ll be using Black Crusade, and all of the expansions. I’ll also be using the fan suppliment reworks for devotion and alignments, but if you don’t have that no problem I can provide it. I’m happy to help out with any rules questions and queries since I understand the system is complex. – To that end I’ll also be using a few house rules and fan erratas for ease, but I’ll mention any changes in the quick references.
I have experience running the 40k rps, and have been designing content for Chaos and it’s factions for a long time, but I haven’t yet had a chance to run a Black Crusade campaign that has lasted beyond a couple of sessions. Bare with me if I miss something, too.
The Crunchy Bits
The game will begin with the warband arriving on The Trial of the Gods and finding a place to use as their fortress. It’ll involve relations with the other warbands, whether through diplomacy or open warfare, and eventually a final battle to claim victory.
While the game will be sandboxy to a degree, all events will take place on the space hulk and there are a number of preplanned "story beats" to give each chapter / scene focus. Some of these will be directly involving the warband, while others will be involving other warbands which the players may decide to get involved with.
At the end of each chapter I like to check in for player feedback, so this is subject to change. If the players think it’s too restrictive I’ll loosen things up, and the same in reverse!
Adult Content / Controversial Themes
We’ll be playing the desciples of chaos, so expect Adult / Controversial themes. There are things I draw a line at (Nothing sexual, for example) but most things won’t be off the table. There will be characters using combat drugs and stimulants, and characters performing dangerous rituals among other things. To this end I intend to use lines, veils and the x card. Also, I will be trying not to go into depth about any of the above mentioned things, this is for enjoyment after all and even horror needs low tension at times.
Also, murderhoboing just because you're chaos won't be tolerated. Even scions of the warp have motivations beyond killing!!
Character Restrictions
Characters are free to pick from mortals or astartes. Within reason, all of the mortal classes apply while the astartes classes are capped with; Champion, Forsaken, Sorcerer, Warpsmith and Veteran of the Long War.
If Veteran of the Long War is chosen, the character will need to be from one of the founding legions. However, I don’t require the characters to be from the traitor legions specifically. If you want to play a Blood Angel who fell to corruption then that’s fine with me!
Bear in mind this is our own canon, so try to avoid backstories that interact with canon characters even if the legions are fair game.
Marginalised groups are always welcome. I feel like encouraged might not be the right word, since maybe we don’t want to encourage anyone to become a chaos cultist, but for now I’ll say they’re encouraged too!
Game Duration and Post Frequency
The game is intended to last a few chapters, so potentially long term, that said given the nature of this medium and the setting it’s possible for people to come and go with relative ease. As for the posting frequency; 3 per week would be ideal!
Player experience
No experience needed, no specialised software needed. As mentioned before, all suppliments can be supplied if necessary. I encourage new faces.
How to apply
Reply below, or let me know. I tend to keep applications open a week and I don’t tend to operate on first come first served. The dark gods favour those with the most character, but no pressure! :p
