Assuming Vasco and Grimdek mentioned the cold out loud, since the DM shared that with everyone. Also, I am assuming Zacharias knows more about fighting than most anything other general information (although he still has an open language slot). He is on the dimmer side of average, but not a complete moron. @Burbage, if you disagree, I'll strike the sentence.Sep 15, 2024 3:34 pm
Ella approached the rest of the party as it positioned itself around the trapdoor. Cautious as ever, she stayed a good 15ft from the entrance.
"Are you sure about this? We’ve heard nothing about frozen halls."
Despite her curiosity, she was obviously not sure opening the trapdoor was a good idea.

"Cold door not normal," Thrud says. "Zach say un-dead or... ele... ele-something. Thrudmarr not know what that is, but undead not something I want to mess with. Maybe smart elf lady right?"
OOC:
If we're gonna open it, we should probably be ready to run lolLast edited September 16, 2024 12:58 pm

If it is undead, holy Grimbok would help us. If it is an elemental; we can use fire. Otherwise, we run, yes. Zach says with a grim smile.

Ruined Tower
After Vasco gives the all-clear concerning traps, Jackie and Grim manage to thread one end of the halfling’s 10’ pole through the trapdoor’s circular steel handle and lift. The trapdoor hinges along one edge to reveal an opening in the floor.
However, as soon as the trapdoor is fully open, a floating, ghostly, translucent figure rises rapidly from below. It has the appearance and attire of an Archontean noble, although its expression is a terrifying combination of fury and pain. The temperature in the tower drops noticeably.
Please can someone (anyone) in the party check for surprise (1d6)? I will do the same for the ghostly figure who was not expecting to be disturbed.

Rolls
Surprise for the ghostly Archontean noble - (1d6)
(5) = 5

OOC:
First to respond (and closest to the ghost, I reckon) Tier 3 encumbrance, so no bonus but no penalty (Zach has no bonus anyway). Looks like neither side is surprised (phew).Last edited September 16, 2024 4:11 pm

OK, so neither side is surprised.
Everyone - please declare your general actions for the round, including any spells you are planning to cast.
Please don't roll anything yet. We still need to resolve initiative once everyone has declared their actions.

OOC:
@Burbage, will my training allow me to recognize that only magic items will hit this apparition? Also, technically, so long as the apparition has only 1 attack per round, I will go first and last regardless of initiative roll.[ +- ] Weapon Specialization (optional)
With the permission of the GM, weapon specialization may be selected during character generation. If weapon specialization is not selected during character generation, it remains forever unavailable to the character, barring some magical or divine intervention. If weapon specialization is in play, fighters may take a second proficiency in the same weapon as the first, granting them one extra attack every 2 rounds with the weapon (hence 3/2 attacks with a melee weapon at 1st level, 2/1 at 7th and 5/2 at 13th), +1 to hit and +2 damage owing to their skill. Specialization costs one proficiency "slot" for melee weapons and crossbows, and two "slots" for missile weapons other than crossbows. NB: A fighter exercising multiple attacks departs from the normal initiative procedure. The fighter will automatically attack first in the round unless fighting an opponent with multiple attacks of its own (in which case initiative should be rolled as normal). The fighter’s second attack in any given melee round will come last in the sequence.

Grim reaches to his holy symbol. Brandishing the wooden symbol of Lucreon at the spirit in attempt to turn him. Her. It. Whatever.
OOC:
Ideally I’d like to turn the spirit AWAY FROM the trap door. Keep it at-bay while we attempt to loot it. I mean, make a pilgrimage into the shrine in order to honor it. That’s exactly what I meant.Last edited September 16, 2024 4:48 pm

Indeed, but as the cleric among us, I don't think it metagaming for Zach to call out to Grim and ask what that is. Which I will do right now.OOC:
@Burbage, IF my character thinks/knows that only magic weapons affect the apparition, his intention is to Flee from Combat immediately, since there is nothing he can do. If he does not know that, he will attack (and find out one way or another). If on his first attack (he gets 2 on odd rounds) he sees nothing happens he will yell at the others to flee, he wont take his second attack in round 1 since it is useless, and then either flee in round 2 if no one else is engaged in melee with the apparition. IF someone needs protetcion or time to escape, then Zach will combine Fighting retreat with Parrying to defend himself and allow others time to get out. Of course, if his first attack does cause damage, he will stay and fight on all further rounds.Sep 16, 2024 5:07 pm
Jacky jumps in fright at the sight of the apparition rising from the now open trap door. He beats a hasty retreat toward and out of the entrance of the ruined tower. "Let's get out of here! Maybe that thing won't like the sunlight!"

Don't get too hung-up or overthink the role-playing vs. metagaming contradiction. Personally, I'm OK for there to be some blurring of the lines between what players know and what characters know. I think I said previously, I see old school gaming as being as much a challenge for the players as the characters.

Vasco recoils and lands on his back. His face is twisted with an expression of terror. He slowly started to crawl back from the trapdoor.
OOC:
I wasn't expecting a ghost. Being a first level character though, I don't think Vasco is equipped to fight with an incorporeal creature. I will try to negotiate if the apparition is willing to talk or frankly just run away.Sep 16, 2024 8:02 pm
"Gorthad!!", Ella spat in her native tongue as she realized what the emerging form was that stepped out of what was obviously a crypt.
As she retreated, back to the door, she reflexively nocked an arrow and began drawing, despite thinking it would be a useless gesture.

OOC:
Ellagel is falling back to the door, a 15-20ft move. If that is incompatible with shooting, she’s glad to forfeit the shot and spare the arrow. She has obviously decided to get out of the tower, but might shoot to distract and provide cover, if necessary.Sep 16, 2024 9:17 pm
"Floating not-alive person! Thrudmarr axe no good for ghosts!"
Seeing his companions retreating, Thrudmarr starts to flee away towards the exit.
Where in relation to the entrance is the trapdoor? I have 90 feet of normal movement. I'm pretty sure we can all make it out in one move action if we're all fleeing even if it's at the very back.

Thrudmarr will flee towards the exit, assuming the ghost isn't in the talking mood. He won't attack unless the ghost directly threatens him or one of his friends. OK, thanks everyone. Someone, anyone (other than Zach who rolled for surprise), please roll for initiative (1d6).
Hint: This would be a useful initiative to win!

Nice. So the party will act on segment 2, the ghostly Archontean noble on segment 6.
However ... before we get to your actions, please can everyone roll me a save versus Spells to see if you can resist the urge to simply flee in abject terror (which might not be a bad option).
