Ichor in the Walls

ICHOR IN THE WALLS
WITH A HIDDEN CREATURE AND A SINGLE LONELY SOUL. NO MORE, NO LESS.

In which there is something hiding in the Bed & Breakfast.

Hush, hush. Quiet quiet. Can you hear that? Whispering. At the bottom of the world. The voices of all the nameless, shapeless things that missed their chance to pick a name and take a form in the world of the now. They're lonely down there, without shape to call their own, without a name to keep them warm in the cold and endless sea.

But names are tricky things. And an idle name spoken by a tired witch in a moment of weakness can slither away from her, trickling down through the floorboards and behind the wallpaper until it finds a little nest, in the darkness and the deep.

Sometimes, when a resident of the Bed & Breakfast wanders late at night, they can hear a faint skittering in the walls. Sometimes, they’ll call out to see who’s there. No one will answer.

But something is there.

SEARCHING

One of us is the Seeker, a resident looking for Ichor in the walls. They'll ask for cards to represent their search. The other one of us is Ichor, who is hiding in the walls. Ichor is the dealer, and holds the deck of cards. Look at Ichor’s character sheet, but don’t feel bound to it—after all, you’re not a guest yet.

Each night is represented by a new hand of cards. As the Seeker looks for Ichor, they will ask for cards, one at a time, from the top of the deck. If the total value of the cards in the Seeker’s hand is 21 exactly (with aces counting as either 1 or 11 as benefits the Seeker, and Jacks, Queens, and Kings all counting as 10), they find Ichor, and may have a conversation with it before it scampers into the darkness. Slip all the cards inside your copy of this book, and keep them there.

If the total value of the cards ever breaks 21, then the Seeker is too eager in their search, and Ichor flees. Shuffle the entire hand back into the deck.

The Seeker may choose at any point to go back to bed. If they do, shuffle all but one card from their hand back into the deck. Slip a card of your choice inside your copy of this book and keep it there.

If there’s not enough cards left in the deck to make 21, then the Seeker has searched everywhere and is forced to give up. Describe how they yell one final call for Ichor, and it is Ichor's choice whether to emerge.

Once all the aces are inside your copy of Yazeba’s Bed & Breakfast, Ichor may make a choice—join the Bed & Breakfast as a guest and maybe (just maybe!) find a home, or return to the walls and hide from the noisy brightness of the nameful world.

Night.

Night has always been quiet at Yezeba’s B&B, but never has the night been so perfectly, peacefully quiet then the nights that followed The One Loud Night—when a guest (who shall not be named) was up past curfew and drawing Yazeba’s unwanted attention.

Thus, the following night and every night since, Yazeba has enforced curfew with her Lights Out at Eleven spell, which puts all non-robots on the property (Hey Kid Hotel included) to sleep when the great-grandfather clock strikes eleven.

And Amelie’s Midnight Featherdustings have been delightfully tranquil ever since…

…until tonight.

A skitter. A whisper. Amelie is not alone.

SEARCHING
Sep 13, 2024 11:52 pm
OOC:
Cards drawn: Jack of Diamonds, 6 of Clubs, 5 of Clubs. Nice, 21 on the first try!
Amelie follows the faint sounds through the quiet halls of the Bed & Breakfast. After several long, tense minutes, they spot something slinking out of a tiny crack in the wall. Something dark, shapeless, nameless. Yellow eyes gleam within tarry black as the thing regards the robotic maid.

"What are you looking at?" the thing growls.
Sep 14, 2024 12:54 am
Amelie tries to answer honestly.

ANALYZE

But… there is nothing in their databank. Accessing the cloud doesn’t help either, nor does the Amel-Co Super-Secret InfoLlink.

There is exactly one source that can provide the answer to this question: the entity itself.

"I do not identify you as a What, but a Who. Therefore, the protocol for finding out who you are is a proper introduction.

"I am Amelie, robotic maid here at Yazeba’s Bed and Breakfast. And you are?"
Sep 14, 2024 1:07 am
"Annoyed," the thing snarls. "I like it better behind the walls, where I don't have to talk to nobody. You asking my name? It's something I'm not supposed to have, but I got one anyway.

"Ichor."
Sep 14, 2024 1:24 am
"Who says you cannot have a name?" Amelie hazards the guess that "Yazeba would not make that rule."

Amelie recalls Yabeza saying ‘names have power.’ Or was it ‘feisty felafel! Names have power?’

"If someone says Ichor cannot be Ichor, that someone is… stating a fallacy."
Sep 14, 2024 2:00 am
Ichor shudders at the mention of Yazeba's name. Its body roils and writhes. "Yazeba! It was her carelessness that made the name stick to me in the first place! That's it, I'm outta here!"

It squelches through the crack in the wall. Amelie hears rapid skittering, and then Ichor is gone.
OOC:
You can search again. The next cards are the 8 of clubs and the 9 of spades. Your hand is at 17.
Sep 15, 2024 7:31 pm
Amelie watches Ichor slip away through the cracks.

This Ichor is a funny duck, they observe, and I do not get the joke. But if it walks like a duck, and talks like a duck…

ERROR

It occurs to Amelie that Ichor neither walks nor talks like a duck.

ERROR. INITIATING EMERGENCY SHUTDOWN

SLEEP MOOOOOooooo
OOC:
Amelie is forced to nap!
They use the 9♠️ as a bookmark.

OOC:
Cards in book: Jack of Diamonds, 6 of Clubs, 5 of Clubs, 9 of Spades

Another night. The skittering in the walls again. Ichor is about...
OOC:
Cards drawn: 9 of Diamonds, Jack of Spades. Draw again, or go to bed and put a card in the book?
Sep 16, 2024 11:19 am
Amelie ignores the skittering on this night.
OOC:
Another 9 in the book. 9♦️ reminds me of that obnoxious ‘Mine Diamond’ song that I banned from being played in my car.

OOC:
Cards in book: Jack of Diamonds, 6 of Clubs, 5 of Clubs, 9 of Spades, 9 of Diamonds.

Another night. The skittering can be heard once more...
OOC:
Cards drawn: 6 of Diamonds, 7 of Hearts. Draw again, or go to bed and put a card in the book?

Amelie might be a little too eager, but she searches for Ichor, hoping to ask another question.
OOC:
What are the odds of drawing a nine now that I took two outta play? Well, there are fifteen cards worth ten that can put me over. But what the heck? Hit me, dealer! I’m feeling lucky. 🤞
Sep 16, 2024 4:22 pm
OOC:
Queen of Hearts. Bust!
The noises scurry away and go silent. Amelie was too eager in their search tonight.
Night four. The search resumes...
OOC:
Cards drawn: 4 of Hearts, 3 of Spades, Queen of Clubs. Draw or retire?
Sep 16, 2024 6:05 pm
OOC:
I went from feeling lucky to feeling punked! I should have known Alice’s nemesis would be the one to get me!
Amelie does not scare away Ichor… this time.
OOC:
Taking the 4 out.
Sep 16, 2024 6:23 pm
OOC:
Cards in book: Jack of Diamonds, 6 of Clubs, 5 of Clubs, 9 of Spades, 9 of Diamonds, 4 of Hearts.

Night five...
OOC:
Cards drawn: Jack of Hearts, 4 of Diamonds. Draw again, or go to bed and put a card in the book?
Sep 16, 2024 7:18 pm
Amelie takes their chances.
OOC:
I’ll draw… not that my odds are that great.
Sep 16, 2024 7:25 pm
OOC:
10 of Hearts, bust.
Another night with nothing to show. Did Amelie imagine their first encounter with Ichor? Is it all in their head?

No, it can’t be. Night six, and the skittering is back...
OOC:
Cards drawn: 5 of Hearts, Ace of Hearts, 7 of Diamonds. Draw or retire?
Sep 16, 2024 8:04 pm
Amelie suspects they have a strategy to get Ichor to stop being so shy. An ace up my sleeve, as the idiom goes. Not that my outfit has sleeves.
OOC:
But I DO have an Ace!!
Yoinking the ♥️!

[ +- ] Cards in Book

The seventh night...
OOC:
Cards drawn: Ace of Spades, Jack of Hearts. 21!
At the end of a week of searching, Amelie at last comes face to face with the squamous, shapeless being known as Ichor. It gurgles at the robotic maid. "You again! Can’t you take a hint? I ain’t interested in whatever you’re sellin’, sir/madam. S’madam!"
Sep 16, 2024 8:40 pm
OOC:
Two aces—yay!
"Interesting. I once valued my position as a being no resident or guest would wish to interact with. Then Gertrude called me friend. I gave a rat a bath. I befriended not one, but a multitude of Hey Kids. I was on stage with a star, which I believe makes me a co-star.

"I am not selling anything to you, Ichor."
Amelie does not explicitly ask why Ichor wishes to be alone. But… they do have a question. "What is under the floorboards and in the cracks in the walls that you prefer over what is on the floorboards and outside the walls?"

If Ichor won’t talk about its reason for wanting to be alone, at least from the way I phrased my question, I might find out if I need to start cleaning the B&B’s insides…!
