The sun begins its slow descent over the twisted plains of the Weird West, casting long, eerie shadows across the land. Somewhere in the distance, the low whistle of a steam engine fades into the howling wind. Life in the West was never easy, but lately, something darker has begun to fester beneath the dust and grit of the frontier. The dead don’t stay buried, and the living aren’t always what they seem.
Each of you has lived a life on the fringe, never quite fitting into the world you walked through. Fate has been a cruel mistress, throwing more than your fair share of trouble in your path. Yet, no matter where your journey has taken you, there’s been one constant: Texas Ranger Larson.
Larson is no ordinary lawman. He’s seen the same strange things you have, and his fight against the evils of the West is relentless. You’ve each crossed paths with him before—whether it was helping him hunt down a haunted outlaw, clear out a nest of ravenous wendigos, or decipher an ancient map etched with symbols that make the skin crawl.
But now, things feel different. There’s a storm coming, a reckoning that feels bigger than anything you’ve faced before.
One by one, you each receive a telegram.
From: Texas Ranger Larson
"Need your help. Urgent matter in Grassy Knoll. Strange happenings I can’t explain. Meet me at the local saloon. Come armed and ready for trouble. Don’t trust anyone you don’t know. – Larson"
The message is brief, but the urgency bleeds through every word. Grassy Knoll is a small, nearly forgotten town, nestled in a valley between jagged hills that seem to whisper when the wind blows just right. It's not the kind of place anyone goes unless they have no other choice.
The train ride there is long, the landscape bleak, but as you near the town, the air grows heavy, as if the land itself is waiting—watching.
The saloon stands at the center of Grassy Knoll like a lone sentry, its windows casting flickering lamplight onto the dusty streets. The town feels too quiet, unnaturally still. Something is wrong here.
Larson isn’t the type to rattle easily, but the fact that he’s called on all of you—together—means this is no ordinary case. And as the night creeps closer, you can't shake the feeling that you're walking into something far bigger—and far darker—than any of you can imagine.

Jed walks towards the huddle of buildings, leaving the train station behind, wraping his duster about his shoulders to ward of the chill air arriving with the late evening. He looks around at his fellow travelers. Not folk he knows well, except thru Larson, but he trusts them...to a point. He wonders what they're thinking, and is it the same worries he carries with him
Sep 16, 2024 5:49 pm
Ezekiel makes a big scene of his first walk through the Grassy Knoll dusty main street, making sure everyone and their cousin sees him in his priestly attire.
He even stops in the middle of the road, theatrically adjusting his wide-brimmed hat.
He scans the sorry lineup of buildings, sees the Saloon and the only travellers converging towards it. This is it, he thinks. More of Larson's little helpers... this must be serious.
The others would see a tall, gangly man in a priest suit, whose face seems strangely at odds with the clothing of a clergyman - a face seemingly more fitting for a gambler, maybe even a swindler.
He walks to the Saloon swinging doors, pushing them open.
Stopping briefly on the threshold to take a look inside, he says out loud, "Just like the Mighty Lord can be found even in the humblest of pebbles, so perhaps some honest soul can hide in this den of wickedness..."
He walks in, clearing the entrance for the other newcomers.

"What's that you're reading?", Morgan asks.
"Nothing. Something. I'm not rightly sure what it is.", I reply.
"You know, brother, obscure ain't the same as laconic?", she challenges.
"I know it. Can't a man be both?", I ask.
"A man can be what he sets his mind to be, I reckon", she counters.
"Amen, to that sister.. I gotta leave you for awhile", I declaim in a way that she knows ends the conversation.
That was just a few days back, but it feels like forever. I came west to escape the war, but it seems that though you can take the man out of the war, you just can't shake the war out of the man. If bones can shiver, I'm sure mine did as I boarded that train that brought me here. Even now there is a knot in my guts I just can't be rid of.
By the pricking of my thumbs, something wicked this way comes, as the witch said.

As he walks towards the saloon, he looks around at the buildings. The absolute quiet and stillness unsettles him and he unconsciously takes out a hand rolled cigarette before realizing he lost his lighter in a card game several weeks ago. He puts the cigarette away and hurries to the saloon, eager to get inside the saloon and hopefully see some signs of life.

Jed rolls his eyes when the preacher shouts out his greeting.
"Damn peacock! He'll git himself filled full of lead." He thinks to himself.
Turning to the other travelers he shrugs his shoulders and follows the preacher into the saloon.

The Reverend steps inside and looks either side at the other travellers catching up with him, likely summoned by Larson like he was.
He nods his head at the Mexican. then at the man with the long moustache and the beard.
Finally his gaze lingers on the other man, with the haunted look. This man's seen too much death, he thinks. He touches the brim of his hat in greeting.
"You here for Larson, my brothers? So am I."

"Howdy, Padre", Calhoun responds, his eyes narrowing as the holy man's unwavering, searching, stare momentarily unsettles him. Quickly regaining composure, the Captain takes out the telegram from his waistcoat pocket and offers it to the revenant-like reverend, adding:
"Yup, here to see Larson as summoned. Guess y'all got the same wire?"

"Mucho gusto senores. My name is Nestor." he grins and touches the tip of his sombrero with an index finger.
He pushes the sombrero back off his head and looks around the saloon with the others.

Waving at the four gentlemen to join him. Larson sitting there at a round table, quietly, drinking. The table is placed on the back of the saloon, in a less crowded space.
Sep 19, 2024 11:38 pm
Jed strolls over, eyeing up the other patrons as he goes and trying to spot those that may be trouble. As he reaches the table he grabs a chair that'll put his back to a wall and sits.
"Larson, long time no see, you're looking...well, alive at least."

The Reverend also sits down, grinning at the Ranger.
"And the Lord summoned His disciples to sit at His table... you've got big shoes to fit, Larson. Hehehe"
"You didn't call twelve of us, but... close enough," he adds, eyeing the others.

Gentlemen, welcome to Grassy Knoll. Thank you for coming. Grassy Knoll is one of the many shithole of the Territories... I brought you all here cause I need your help. You all have some particular sets of talents that could help me solve that case. But beware, its kinda weird! Weirder that we ever faced before. I must know if youre up for the task or not. If you stay, the local religious community is willing to pay us. If not its ok, Ill pay the train ticket back to anywhere you want.
Sep 20, 2024 5:22 pm
At the mention, Eze's ears prick up.
"Religious community, huh? What denomination are we talking here, Larson? We come in plenty dif'rent flavors... and some are better 'n others... "
He winks at Nestor. "...Just like with booze."

As the Texas Ranger mentions the mission's benefactor, Calhoun's face breaks into an ironic grin and he stabs a gaze at Jed, raising his eyebrows as they make eye contact.

The locations where they found the bodies range throughout the county. No one particularly young has been killed. All of the victims seem to have died in a violent way from a severe cutting stroke predominantly, but not exclusively, across the lower half of the body. All were alone and away from town when they were killed. They have all been laid to rest in the Pioneer Cemetery.

Then he also pays for a room, arranges for his horse to be fed and groomed, and retires to rest from the long dusty trek to this god-forsaken town.
He keeps an eye on the patrons as he goes upstairs, to check if their movements seem to be observed.

"Ok. That's a good idea! We will split the team in two. Calhoun and Jed gonna visit Mr. Stand. The Padre and I gonna talk to the Sheriff and after we will go to the Church. We will then join back here afterward. Any questions?"

Jed will finish his breakfast, chatting with the others when conversation moves his way. When they are finally ready to leave he walks with Calhoun to where the barkeep said Kent Stand was holed up.

"Ah. The Sheriff, huh? I am ready, let's see if the Law of Men and the Law of God see eye to eye..."
He stands up with the Ranger. "Doesn't happen very often, my son..."

Seth and Jed, you finish your breakfast then you get your horses as you ride to Kent Stand's house. Mr. Stand is living on a nice little farm house at the edge of the town. When you arrive there, everything seem to be quiet and calm.
