Tibor looks down at his refilled cup and blinks. He clears his throat and sets the cup down.

"While we wait for my compatriots to check on the food, perhaps you fellows might be interested in a contest of strength?" He looks around at the guards, seeing if anything further about them has changed.

Frac waits to see what will happen.

Looks to Anton "What the hell was that? Was that real?"

Clarence is very intrigued by the light. So intrigued that with a muttered—or more accurately bellowed—excuse me, he tries to hop up on to the table in between the trenchers of meat and flagons of drink, and get his hands on that candle.
OOC:
I say "tries" because while Clarence does not know this, his player is concerned that this whole thing may be an illusion setting up a very funny scene of Clarence landing on his rather muscular gluteus. Clarence, bless his soul and his well-below-average dexterity, thinks the table is real and just the candle is weird.

The guards all look at Tibor like he's crazy and laugh.

"My good man, do we look in any shape for contests of strength? We are off duty and half-starved! How about we share stories instead? You go first!" As Tibor looks at them, they seem to have aged another decade in the few minutes that have passed. They appear in their forties, streaks of grey in their hair and beards, some have bald spots or receding hairlines, and wrinkles tug at the corners of their eyes and mouths.

Clarence is relieved the table is solid and as is the candelabra. The black candle is burning extremely quickly and is already half gone. Even with no ability in magic, Clarence feels that the candle is mystical in some way as a shiver rolls through him and the hairs on his body stand up.

Clarence has a positively horrible thought. The candle—so bright, burning so fast, does it relate to the guards aging? He jumps off the table with a scream UNHOLY AND PROFANE. He quickly looks at his hands to see if they have aged being so close to that black taper. He has years of bodybuilding events to consider, let alone the effects of age on intramuscular ligament elasticity.

Clarence has not aged at all.

Clarence breathes a sigh of relief as he reassures himself of his muscularity. Maybe throwing in a couple of extra flexes, but he was really perturbed. Once he gets a hold of himself, he turns to Frac and says You know magic, right? What's with that black candle. It's freaking creeping me out.

OOC:
Did Clarence grab the candlabra or just the candle? Is he holding it?

OOC:
Clarence grabbed the candelabra but dropped it when he thought the candle was aging the guards.

Clarence says:
You know magic, right? What's with that black candle. It's freaking creeping me out.
"Gregory is sorting it out. But he needs some time..." - replies the goblin, nodding his head towards his fellow wizard. He noticed the casting of Detect Magic a while ago.

OOC:
In that case... Ooh lucky lucky.
The candleabra drops to the table but by some miracle it doesn't extinguish. Everyone in the room hears a door slam open down the hallway where Varos and Anton had exited the room.

"By Memnon's black arse, I know not!", the wide-eyed young priest exclaimed in response to Varos' question.

Despite his obvious shock, the young priest stood his ground and kept looking at the unbelievable chamber beyond.

Gregory slinks forward, now sure that this whole thing was a farce! He licks his thumb and forefinger, so as to wet them sufficiently enough to quench the candle. He presses the flame between his digits, and so snuffs out the magical light!

"Now then, let’s see who is left among us!" he says, looking about the room to do a body count!
Oct 7, 2024 5:08 am
Gregory extinguishes the flame and the room goes pitch black! The sounds of merriment stop. Except for the sound of his thumping heart. But then another sound in the distance. The scrape of metal on stone in a rhythmic pattern similar to footsteps...
OOC:
It is now pitch black so Gregory can't see anyone else until a new lightsource is created. SL increases by 2!

In a near panic, Clarence takes one of the two candles he has and lights it with one of the matches.
OOC:
Let me know if the match takes, boss

Gregory, seeing the efforts to light the room, warns the others:

"If I am correct, we will find ourselves quite alone when the light returns!"
Oct 7, 2024 7:04 am
The candle flares to life. Gregory is only partly correct. If he is only talking about living things, they are quite alone. But if he includes the dead, they are not alone at all. The bright candle reveals a mess hall built of bones. The walls are made from stacked bones and skulls from floor to ceiling. The guards are skeletal remains twisted and fused into their bone chairs. All food and drink has vanished.
OOC:
So I just rechecked the whole adventure and there are no mentions of lanterns or torches so I'm just going to say candles function as torches and provide 30' of light and last 30 minutes.
Oct 7, 2024 9:10 am
Not afraid of bones, Frac now looks around and checks the real room. Anything of note? He also ensures that Gregory kept the black candle with him. It may be useful later.
