The Castle - Floor 4

You toss in the eye of newt. The cauldron's contents change color to grey, then pink, then purple. It bubbles and toils and probably troubles. A thick gas cloud roils out of it and rapidly fills up the entire room, obscuring all vision. The cloud stings your eyes and burns your lungs. You hack and cough. Your eyes water. Your skin prickles. It's hard to breathe. It hurts to breathe.

Then the cloud dissipates. But the pain and discomfort remain.

You find yourself in a new room, high atop the castle. Now that you have left the basement you can hear a storm howling outside, the constant sheets of rain sound like sizzling meat. A bolt of lightning brightens the sky through a large circular window nearly ten feet across giving you a view of the enormous castle below you and the misty forest that surrounds it.

Your room is about fifty feet to a side. Below the large single window lies a glass coffin. Inside is a beautiful maiden with flaxen hair and ivory skin. Her neck is marred by purple bruising all around it. A rose of gold and ruby lies on her bosom, clasped in both hands.

On the opposite side of the room is a large iron chest, two feet long, with three locks in a row.

In the center of the room is a spiral staircase that descends the tower and into the castle proper.

Detect Magic (with advantage, due to talent) - (2d20h1+2)

Nothing in the tower is radiating magical energy.

Clarence considers the "prophecies" of the visions in the prison. Frac, little buddy, anything here look like "where the stone itself beats with life" and which contains a sword? Matbe in the chest? Also, we are about as lofty as one can be in this accursed castle. Anything looking like " the Raven whose wingspan eclipses the moon"? It's clearly not the Priest since this is a woman. Perhaps this is mother? She looks young though.
OOC:
Realizing that the loftiest height in the castle may be the roof of the tower, Clarence wants to check the room to see if there is a trapdoor or a way to exit the window, and would then go to inspect the chest.
Oct 10, 2024 10:36 pm
Varos will head to the chest and check the locks.
OOC:
Was I able to hide a lockpick in the seam of my boot?
Oct 11, 2024 1:01 am
There are no trapdoors and the window is decorative and non-functional. Clarence doesn't see any way to open the window short of smashing it. While looking through the window, another flash of lightning reveals a small footbridge connecting this tower with another turreted tower several dozen feet below. And under that footbridge, nestled between a roof peak and an exterior wall, is a giant ovoid bird nest.

The locks on the chest seem high quality. Moreover, they seem to be linked together requiring three keys inserted at the same time before they will turn.
OOC:
Yes, Varos has one lockpick.

Dudes, dudettes, and little green friends, we may have found the Raven! Clarence excitedly points out the bird nest. Anyone else have any gold besides this candelabra I picked up downstairs?

Clarence look around again. Shame to miss out on the sword if it’s here. What would be "stone beats with life"? In any event, if we cannot find anything else in this room, we should check out that birds nest.

But first, Clarence walks over to the sleeping/dead/comatose possible vampire in the coffin and looks for anything which would fit with the prison cell corpse augeries.

Gregory is already there when Clarence join him in inspecting the ivory woman laid to rest in the room!

He keeps his spell close at hand, so that he might hold the woman, should she suddenly spring to life!

"Who do you suppose this is? A previous victim, maybe?" he says, reaching a hand out to indicate the wounds around her neck!

"I'm all for raiding this place for shiny trinkets for the raven." He pauses to think for a moment and continues, "I am not sure what the riddle of the sword is. But perhaps another tower could still be a place of great heights and it is on the way to the bird nest anyway."

Tibor walks over to the coffin and looks more closely at the lady inside. "Perhaps she is what the fortune of the Ghost means by restoring lost love." He sees what she holds in her hands and wonders if he could really steal the rose if it was what was needed for the raven. He steps right next to the coffin. "Her neck certainly doesn't look like a vampire bite. It almost looks like she was strangled to death."

"A terribly angry act, yes!" Gregory confirms, feeling some pity for the woman. And yet, here she was in pride of place, so she could be no simple dungeon captive…

Coughing profusely, Anton is looking far less well than before the arcane transportation. He had been withholding the use of curative magic, but the time had come to supplicate Madeera for her blessing once again. Muttering the words of a well known psalm, the priest attempted to invoke the healing energies of his goddess.

With a smile of pure joy he feels the mystical energies embrace his person, and as he touches his wounded shoulder and his exhausted chest, he feels the workings of Madeera restore his vitality. After the use of the spell, the young man seems almost fully restored to health.
OOC:
Back to 17/18. Is anyone around requiring urgent magical healing?

Relieved to have recovered his vitality, Anton now turned to examine the room about him. He was happy to see that the raven's nest had been found, though a path must yet be found to it. Regarding the sword of which there had been some rumour in the dungeons below, Anton wondered if they were at the right high place.

For one, it would not be unthinkable that the sword be outside of this very tower, used as a pinnacle for the orrfing for instance. He looked at the ceiling, wondering if there might be a passage to an attic, or if the rooftop could only be reached by breaking the glass window and attempting to climb up the wall.

Then he c onidered the glass coffin. His eyes could only leave the gold and ruby rose with some effort. "We might need that as an offering for the raven, if that is the path we use." He observed the coffin, trying to determine if it could be easily opened, and if so, how.

The iron chest he left alone. Three keys were needed, it seemed. There was little he could do to open that path.
OOC:
So:
- what can be discerned about this chamber's ceiling? Are we immediately under the rooftop, or is it plausible that an attic exists between this chamber and the outside?
- does the large window seem breakable ?
- does the glass coffin have a moveable lid, or another obviosu opening mechanism? Does the glass seem thick / heavy? Does the coffin rest on a slab of stone, an altar, or on the floor, directly?

Varos will attempt to pick the locks he figures they only he wouldn't be able was if the keys had to be turned at the same time.

Anton explores the high tower room. The large circular window seems made of ordinary glass and is certainly breakable if struck hard enough. Outside the window he can see the eaves of the peaked roof above. It seems they are just below the roof and is unlikely to be any hidden rooms above. The roof lacks any trapdoors or other obvious openings.

Turning his attention to the coffin, he doesn't notice any obvious hinges or handles. It looks like it is sealed shut, perhaps to prevent decay or at least keep dust and moisture out. The glass seems like ordinary glass and easily breakable. The coffin lays on a stone slab about two feet thick to keep it directly off the ground and allow for easier viewing.

Anton examines the glass coffin some more. Could a truly athletic fellow, say Clarence, be able to raise the entire glass cover off, without having to break the glass?
OOC:
So, I have two suspicions :
- One is that maybe this sword is just set at the top of this tower, as part of the roof (an "arrow" as we say in French, for the tip of the spires in gothic buildings). So maybe we should break the window and have someone climb up top and check.
- The other is that if we smash the glass coffin something real bad might happen. Pehaps the glass shards shread the body and the rose. Perhaps it will summon some vengeful spirit. I'd like to make sure we can't just remove / lift up the glass coffin without breaking it. Of course, if the cadaverous dame is herself lying on top of the glass — i.e., she is entirely encased in a rectangular box of glass —, then we have little choice in the matter.
Oct 11, 2024 2:13 pm
OOC:
You could definitely try to climb onto the roof and check, but falling is certain death. The woman is totally encased in glass, so there is a glass bottom.

Do one of you men of magic know any kind of levitation spell? Or perhaps we could find some rope somewhere to help with the climbing.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but there's nothing in the coffin except the woman and the rose.

It's pickable, but you need 3 lockpicks and 3 people to pick it simultaneously. It's also smashable as all locks are...
