Just not gonna happen

Oct 14, 2024 10:40 pm
Allen tries to get comfortable in the limited space of the stollen escape pod and taps at the terminal again. He was tracking another ship, he knew it was there, but the thing kept going in and out of sensor lock. Unsure if it was the pathetic state of the pods systems or something to do with the ship Allen tries again, for the 1,000th time. Still nothing. The last valid sensor data was the ships descent into the 6th planet's atmosphere. Which was a lucky break as it was one of the few he could reach. He had been aiming for the 4th but things conspired against him and so... here he was.

Any how, the pod had enough power for one landfall safely. The question is, does he want to risk it or should he wait up here in orbit? The sensors found a ship on the surface, must be the one he was tracking. All he knew for certain was that the ship on the surface was not the one he left from. He could still contact the one he left if he really needed to but after a moments though decided, it was just not gonna happen

OOC:
@Dracostern : welcome to the story. Now let's try and get you with the rest, without dying :)
Looking over the meager controls available, half of which he had been forced to override and make available so the pod didn't just pick the fist ship it found and automatically broadcast the distress call to. The current options came down to
1. Descend right at the ship
2. Contact the ship down on the planet's surface and hope no one else heard him
3. Sit and wait for the ship to come back up and hope no one else pulled into orbit because there was no way this thing could hide from or outrun any ship

Give me your choice, with any details you like, and roll a test to control the escape pod's systems

@Katzle,@Dracostern You guys can into Allen and Luminara here
As Allen ponders the next step a shift behind him remind him of the pods other passenger, taking up 2/3 of the space. Though not too sure if each other they did manage to help reach other break free of the holding cells, grab a few supplies and slip into the escape pod and off ship without getting blasted. Do their associate was of to a good start.

Allen would be deep in thought, a lot had happened in a short time, he had managed to get away from those pirates with the help of another. He would turn to the other being with him and nod his head towards them in acknowledgement. "Thank you for helping me back there, my name is Allen, I never got to tell you before haha."

He would move to the controls before speaking again. "What do you think we should do?"

Crammed into the back of the escape pod is a Tyranaxi woman, clearly suffering from space problems. The pod doesn't seem to be designed with significantly larger humanoids in mindd, so she has trouble sitting upright, instead having to bend forward quite awkwardly. Also, the oxygen scrubber painfully presses against her lower back. But, despite these conditions, Luminara is still glad they made it out - almost everything beats what they had to go through.

Luminaras voice is a slight bit too loud for the escape pod as she ponders their next step.
"I think we shouldn't linger. We're small, that aids us in hiding, but I can't imagine this thing is shielded well against emissions and we'll be picked up eventually - if they are still looking, which they most likely are."

Luminara could only watch while Allen fiddled with the escape pods controls earlier, understanding little about what was going on. But she did get the general gist.

"I helped you as much as you did me. I'm Luminara, pleasure to meet you."

She shifts uncomfortably, one of her arms slamming against the wall, causing the Tyranaxi woman to let out a grunt. She didn't mention it, but she is advocatorial for a quick rescue attempt because if she has to stay in this tin can for much longer she's going to go insane.
Oct 16, 2024 7:06 am
The human glanced back to the Tyranaxi woman in sympathy. She was quite large, taller then him, so she must feel extremely cramped. Allen would comb his short brown hair before turning his green eyes towards the planet below. This wasn't the ship they were looking for, but it was their best shot.

"Very well, down we go." He was quite nervous, unsure about what would happen next. He also couldn't help but worry about his new friend through all of this.

Plotting to land as close to the ship on the surface as possible you trigger the descent of the pod. Fortunately this is not too hard as it is one of the pods built in functions, to find and move to the nearest signs of non-hostile civilization.

Dracostern, go ahead and give me a Test to program the pod's descent. Use advantage (3d6) if you just point and click to let the pod do everything after you point it a the planet, a basic test (2d6) if you want to add any other parameters, or disadvantage (1d6) if you want full manual control

Allen grits his teeth, he really did want to try and manually control this, but he was a tinkerer, not a pilot, so he would defer to the automatic controls. He would point it close to the ship and let it do it's work.

Pod's Descent - (3d6)

Luminara shifts again, more out of tenseness than out of the overwhelming feeling of crampedness this time. The capsules finally descending, but that leads to a whole bunch of other things to worry about. The large woman pensively fiddles with her lower set of hands as she tries to glance over the head of hair of the human in front of her, trying to take a peek at the rudimentary sensor readout of the hijacked pot. She hates not knowing what's going on outside. The enemy unknown is much scarier than the enemy you can see, after all.

"We're moving. Good."
Oct 16, 2024 7:51 pm
The pod begins to drop into the atmosphere slowing just enough to prevent a total burn up. This however does not lend to a comfortable ride. The pod keeps beeping alerts as different stages of the descent are completed before alarms start blaring at the last minute indicating all should "PREPARE FOR IMPACT"

Bracing yourselves as best you can in the pod, that likely has not had any maintenance in about a decade, you hope the systems will hold. With a roar the pod dumps as much velocity as it can with the fuel it has left then deploys the emergency parachute and ending with a brief moment of intense thrust before the fuel was exhausted and you dop to the ground with a thud.

Checking the sensors you note that you have landed close to the ship but that the planets atmospheric conditions will requires suits. The pod comes equipped with 4 packets of smart material that can be used to create one time use environmental suits rated for space and other hostile environments. The longevity of the suit depends on the conditions it is exposed to. Luminara's bulk will require of the packs for full coverage and based on your guess from the pods sensors the suits will last no more than 30 minutes, without any further complications. The pods sensors can only point you in the correct direction and give a vague distance to ship. However as you can currently see the tail of the ship you are confident of reaching it without getting lost.

Gathering your packs, which you can put on inside or outside the smart suits material, you prepare to set out.

Specify any actions you take before opening and leaving the pod.

Allen would brace himself, gripping the control panel in such a way as to not press any buttons by accident, still he held on tight. The alarms did not help with his mood as they would thud onto the ground. He tumbled for a bit before righting himself, at the very least the young man was doing ok.

He would shake his head and look behind him. "Are you alright Luminara?" He would question his big friend before reaching for one of the martials to begin creating suits for them both, starting with the other being with him.

Strangely enough, the bumpy ride due to the atmospheric breaking manouvre doesn't make Luminara more uncomfortable than she already is - or not by a lot, anyways. Turns out, if you are already crammed into the walls there's little room for you to shake about! It's still a sickening experience and Luminara can be heard mumbeling what appears to be verse, her eyes closed as she hopes their journey won't end with a band as escape shuttle fails.

Luckily, it doesn't! Luminara gathers her bearings and tries to get an overview of their situation - it could certainly be worse, she determines after a moment of thought! With Allen already being fast at work in front of her, Luminara will follow suit. Unfortunately, she's rather constrained and only slowly makes progress, but the four arms help.

"I've had nicer landings, but at least we're alive. I think nothings broken?"

She does feature some bruises, but they are a nuisance at worst, nothing actively impeeding her ability to function and get out of this tomb. Staring at the atmospheric readout, Luminara frowns, then turns towards the little life support system in the corner.

"This thing has a carbon dioxide scrubber, but it surely won't be able to deal with a contaminated atmosphere, that's not what it's for. Once we open the hatch, that's it."

She inspects the packets, then watches Allen assemble the environment suits while she thinks.

"We should cut power before we go. It won't help hide us from anyone that had half an eye open while we were coming down, but at least it'll help cover our tracks in case they only arrive to investigate later."

After dressing in the smart fabric suits you begin shutting down the systems and Allen finds that the emergency trasponder for the pod, which you disabled before fleeing the pirates, is still inactive but has an independant power supply an can be removed if you wish. All of this is somewhat complicated by the odd angle of the ship as your landing on the icy surface of the ship melted and shattered much of it in the immediate area resulting in an uneven landing. As you finish powering down the pod you note that had you not done so it would not have lasted much longer in any event. The poor state of it's maintenance combined with the rough landing have exhausted and damaged much of its resources.

Your pod is about 100 meters from the other ship. The outside enviroment, other than bing cold and unbreathable, is windy and the ice is a mix of rough chunks and smoothe surfaces likely from the ship setting down on the surface, much as with your pod.

Luminara doesn't think that they can start the pod back up with the limited amount of battery remaining - not that they would have wanted to, anyways. There's little they can salvage from the crashed pod aside from what they've already taken.
The suit does fit remarkably well - an advantage from being able to construct it on site! Luminara briefly smiles to herself before focussing back on the outside world - remarkably cold, hostile air, rough terrain and they don't even have a proper weapon to fight off any natuarally occuring lifeforms in case this world has any. Their chances could be a lot higher, but it's not too far!

"Alright little one, are you ready? We ought to improvise something for crossing that ice though, it looks remarkably slippy... do you reckon we can use some of the smart material to fashion a rope to tie us together? I wouldn't want to loose you in this environment."
Oct 22, 2024 7:55 am
Allen would turn back towards Luminara, after putting on his suit. It fit just fine and he was thankful for it! At the other's suggestion. The human would nod his head and rub his chin. "You make a good point, I...am not the best in environments like this...you know, you have done a lot for me and I have to thank you Luminara. I'll repay you back someday."

He smiled at her and began to search for anything they could use as a rope, if need be he could tinker on something to create a connection device. That was the best move in this situation.
"What do you think we will find on that ship?"
Oct 22, 2024 11:02 am
Luminara lets out a noise, somewhere between a chuckle and a forceful exhale. Tilting her head, the tyranaxi woman observes Allen working on the connection rope, or whatever similar device he will come up with.

"I am in your debt too, you know. I might be good at knocking out mooks and breaking down unsecured hatches, but I would have never managed to override the emergency pods system well enough not to immediately be picked up from the very vessel I am trying to flee. I would say we're even after this one, no?"

She thinks for a moment more, her hands fiddling with one another as she distracts herself. The air is getting slightly stale already, they don't have much longer in here.

"I don't... really know what will await us. Hopefully, friendly people or... nothing at all. We do have to hope, with our limited supplies and lack of weapons, running into a band of slavers or pirates will be our end."

I like to allow as much freedom as possible for PC so feel free to try or ask about anything. I take players asking about a situation as the PC considering the possibility and and declared action as the PC just going for it. Anytime an action involves a bit of randomness or interacts with complex situations or creatures add a test. Add Advantage is appropriate due to your trake knowledge/skill or a trait. I may impos disadvantage depending on the situation, but this is easily done and explained afterwards so when in doubt roll more dice (2 or 3 D6) and I will take them from left to right as needed.

Luminara's search - (2d6)

You find the standar pod supplies easily enough but they are not per rgulations would require. Likely the pirates accessed them for personal use.
Basic Rations: Ther should have been enough food and water to last 4 people for a few days but all you find is a single liter of water.
Emergency Medkit: This is stripped oa all medicines leaving you with only bandages.
Oxygen Canisters: Several spare oxygen tanks for extending life support are still in their slots but all have been depleted due to a lack of maintenance.
Personal Locator Beacon: A device that sends a distress signal, though it had already been been tampered with making it easy to disabledso you could escape the pirates.
Smart material Survival Suits: Enough for 4 lightweight, vacuum-rated suits you take what remains to create a a pair of packs and a length of rope for use between each other.

You also find a few non standard items, likely stashed by pirates who used the pod for personal use.

Personal Data Device: You find an archaic pocket sized entertainment system with rough-cut videos or music files of questionable taste. Multitool:A compact tool for basic repairs or opening sealed compartments.
Communicator: Designed for shaort range communication this may still work but you leave it off for later testing.

Thanks for the explanation! Now in hindisight, the searching should have warranted a roll, but I am not accustomed to rolling myself in case I think something needs a roll - sorry! Will try to be more proactive in that regard going forward.
Luminara, while Allen is working on the connector rope, will take inventory about the remaining goods found in the pod. The loot is rather sparse, but at least they have some things - perhaps it is enough to bribe whoever is on that ship for... not killing them immediatley? Altough they could probably kill them immediately and then take what little they have, anyways.
Luminara grumbles to herself, divvying up the supplies.
She'll take the bandages herself - while she's most likely first in the fight, and, as such first out of the fight, she worries about the fragility of the small human with her. If they get cought in some kind of trap, Luminara gauges herself to have a better chance of not being knocked out and perhaps being able to apply the bandages to Allen - even if its probably too late at that point.
She'll also take the water ration, perhaps it will be useful...

The Personal Locator Beacon she leaves for Allen, he can probably use it better than she ever could. The Personal Data Device she can't find a use for currently, so she'll also offer it to the human, maybe he has any ideas.
Luminara thinks about the multitool for a moment before eventually taking it for herself.
The Communicator she also leaves for Allen, he seems to have a better idea on how to work tech.

Got it, to be honest, I'm also not used to this style of play, so I don't know if I'll remember or not but I can try.
When the human was offered the Persomal Locator Beacon, the Data Device as well as the Communicator, he would take them with a thanks and a smile before getting back to his work fastening a rope. This was taking a while and he was growing more and more concerned by the second, thank goodness he had someone with him.
