The Adventure

@Leira Stormwind:

Hassan seems unbothered by your questions. In fact, as breezily as he answers, he's probably answered them dozens of times before.

"You desire more details? A good sign! It means you haven't rejected the Path outright."

"So, details: to join, you need a sponsor. As I said, I'd be happy to sponsor you and your friends. You'd have to fill out some paperwork (establishing your identity, mostly), and then you'd be put on provisional status. After that, you'd be assigned a job. Nothing too daunting; we're not going to send you out to slay a dragon on your first mission!"

"If you perform satisfactorily, great! You're now a part of the guild. If you don't perform well, we'll evaluate your performance, and then send you out on a second job. If you fail at that job...the guild would still work with you, but it certainly wouldn't be an auspicious start. Perhaps the Path isn't a good fit for you."

"As for member ranks, we go by coinage: Copper, Silver, Gold, Platinum. We don't use electrum, because it's such a strange currency. Why even have it at all? But I digress...."

"If you succeed in your provisional job, you'll become a Copper. Then you move up based on your efforts...or get demoted based on your failures. Should you prove extraordinarily capable, you may even ascend to our ruling council, called the Nine Pillars. There's nine of them, obviously...a straightforward name, eh?"

"You're expected to be active in the guild, though 'active' is flexible. You know how it is: some jobs take two days, some jobs take weeks, after which you're certainly entitled to a break."

"We don't deal in slavery, sex trafficking, or consort with dark or demonic forces. However, there is some...moral ambiguity for some of our jobs. You may have to grease someone's palm, or bend a few rules, to accomplish your goals."

"If you take a job through the guild, they take out 2% for membership fees. This is taken out beforehand, so don't worry about doing math; if someone tells you a job is 100 gold, you'll get paid 100 gold, not 98 gold. Many balk at this fee, but I think they're foolish. 2% for a world of opportunities, for a network that has your back, for reliable allies that you can consult on any topic? A bargain, in my opinion."

"As for how you and your friends fit in: you all must determine that. I don't know your exact capabilities. Are you crafty and ambitious, but also skilled at combat and exploration? Then you'd be like a fish in water! But as I mentioned, the Path is not for everyone. If business and investing bores you to tears, then you'd be better off joining a straight-up adventuring guild...as much as it would pain me to lose you!"

"Oh, and you can leave the guild at any time. We don't hunt you down like barbarians for rejecting us. However, if you officially leave, you lose whatever status you had; even if you were a Platinum, should you wish to rejoin, you'd have to start back at the provisional stage. This has actually happened, and certain former Platinums thought they should get special treatment. The Path rejected their pleas, which created hurt feelings, but that's how it is. We can't have people bouncing in and out willy-nilly, yet still expecting to maintain their rank."

"I'll let you digest those details. But once you have, feel free to ask more questions! I am at your service."

Totes_McGee says:
@Thomas Miller:

"Of course, Thomas. Discuss amongst yourselves."

"However, I'll be moving forward with my mission shortly. So you may have to catch up with me, should your deliberations take some time. Still, I have a room here at Hogarth's Folly, and if I'm not there, Hogarth will know where I am. He's discrete and dependable...and no pushover."
Thomas nods his head, he was taking mental notes about this. He might have time to catch up with the older man. Hogarth's Folly. The guard would nod his head before getting up. "Thank you very much, we shall see how this goes...but for now, good luck." He would smile at the older man before pealing off to wait with his new druid friend.

Leira listens attentively as Hassan elaborates on the intricacies of the Prosperous Path. She nods occasionally, her light blue hair catching the warm glow of the tavern's lanterns. While the promise of financial security piques her interest, she can't help but think that Hassan enjoys the sound of his own voice a bit too much.

"That's quite an extensive overview,"
she says politely. "I appreciate you taking the time to explain all of that. The guild's structure sounds well thought out."

She takes a sip of her drink, glancing around the tavern. "The atmosphere here is lively tonight. Maybe I should got check out how my companions are doing. After all, we are a team. I wouldn't join the guild without them."

Leira carefully stands up, quite relieved that she got away from that windbag.

As the others gather back together, Aenwyn leads off. "So Wyla was was accosted by some bandits on her way into town. She challenged theor leader to honorable combat, wrestling specifically, and when the bastard lost his gang tried to jump her. She's of a mind to go back and teach them a lesson. Not murder, just try to convince them to pack it in and move on from here or go home."

"No guarantee of profit in it for us, but maybe these guys have a bounty on theor heads? Or perhaps we might reliberate their loot and the rightful owners would be appreciative? What'd you guys find out?"

While the three of you converse, a barmaid bustles over and sets down three frothy ales.

"Here ya go, lasses and lad. The gentleman over yonder bought these for you."

She points at Hassan, then departs as quickly as she arrived. Hassan waves to Aenwyn and Thomas...but blows a kiss to Leira.

The three tankards are filled with Sunburst Wheat, a bright and refreshing ale with notes of citrus and honey.
Oct 28, 2024 9:40 pm
Aenwyr lifts her cup in salute to the stranger thanking h for the drink.
Oct 29, 2024 3:25 am
Tomas nods as he listens to Aenwyr's report before the Barmaid came by with Sunburst Wheat. He would look over at Hassan as directed and wave a thanks to him before taking a sip. That was the man Leira spoke to, seems like that went well. "Hmmm...I think it would be worth following up on those thugs, they might indeed have stolen stuff from people, I don't want them to get away with that."

He would then clear his throat and give his own report. "As for the older gentleman. He's a Follower of Tempus, he and his adventuring band were sent to clear out some Goblins in Timbervale, or nearby, long story short, one of his friends, a man named Dane, was taken and when they foudn him months later he has changed and is how comitting quite horrific acts with some followers. This is cause for concern to be honest, but it may be a bit above our current abilities."
Oct 29, 2024 8:36 pm
"Sounds better than... wait... did he just..." Leira looks a bit annoyed at Hassan blowing her a kiss. "What a windbag..." she groans frustrated for a moment. "Hassan is a member of an adventurer guild. Adventure for hire. We could make a few coins from it, but we would basically act as reversed... mercenaries. We pay them to get leads on adventure and hope to make a profit of it."

She eyes him suspicious again.

"It could be an easy way for adventure and profit I think. But then again... he looks like a slimey weasel to me who can sweet talk any kind of obscure deal."
Oct 29, 2024 9:59 pm
Thomas rubbed his chin as he considered that offer to join a guild. Something didn’t sit right with paying them to get leads on adventures. That seemed a bit off. But he could very much be wrong.

"I say we put a pin in the Guild idea, I assume the offer is always open? I suggest we look at other options for guilds first before making a decision. At least that’s what I think, you’re both free to disagree."
Oct 30, 2024 8:09 pm
"I fully agree. There is something suspicious about Hassan. That or he really so love the sound of his own voice... I don't know. Thomas, if you feel that investigating Dane might be challenging for us, I'd suggest we follow up on Wyla's story that Aenwyn told us about."
Oct 30, 2024 9:09 pm
Aenwyn looks again at her drink, considering. She shrugs and sips from it again. "I don't think joining his guild is what I want to do. I wonder if the gnome's bandits and the old man’s cultists are related? But i think id rather look into the cult first."
Oct 30, 2024 9:21 pm
Thomas blinked for a moment and turned to Aenwyn, considering her theory about the connection between the thugs and Dane, it would make sense but there was no proof so he wouldn't voice anything related to that out loud. So he cleared his throat.

"Well Leira, I agree with the suspicion with this Hassan fellow, it seems like we all agree not to follow up on that one yet. So that leaves two." He would say before turning to the Elf and rubbing his chin. He did feel the cult was too dangerous at the moment, but they could cause more suffering while the trio weren't there.
"They do sound dangerous, I just think we might need to get a big stronger before taking them on."
Oct 31, 2024 9:56 pm
"Ok. We help the gnome bring the bandits to justice. Works for me. We might he able to deal with the other problem later. Shall we go work out the details?"
Oct 31, 2024 10:40 pm
While the three of you are conversing, a young, well-dressed young man enters the tavern. He may actually be a teenager, so youthful is his appearance. He saunters over to Wyla and addresses her...Wyla grabs her battleaxe and squints at him, but she responds. The youth quickly pulls out some sort of note and places it on the gnome's table. Laughing, he then gives her a sarcastic salute, and saunters back to the door. You all hear Wyla loudly asking questions, but the man pays her no mind, and is gone before she can collect herself to pursue him.

She plops back down in her seat, furrows her brow, and reads the note. As she reads, her already tanned complexion becomes darker as she reddens. Her eyes bulge, and a wall-shaking expletive roars from her lips.

She bounds over to your table and slaps the note down.

Wyla: "That foppish punk messenger boy was searchin' the taverns and found me...and left this! Read it! Can you believe their...their gall?! They try'n assault me on the road, now they threaten me with death if I don't be their errand girl?! I knew they were arrogant, but I didn't think those troll-shits would hide behind their daddy like that!"

The note is written in a clear hand, and says:

To the Blue-Haired Gnome (we couldn't recall your name),

Your actions have endangered not only our personal reputations but also a deal of great importance to our family. Our father is a man of great influence, and isn't forgiving. As of yet, however, we haven't told him of your transgressions.

We are willing to show leniency if you take on a task that will prove your worth to our household. If you succeed, it will perhaps restore a fraction of our goodwill.

If you decline this task, we will be forced to share the truth about your disgraceful ambush. You can expect no safe haven in Matterfort—or any town within our father’s vast reach. In fact, you may find yourself food for carrion rather quickly.

If you’re wise enough to comply, meet us at dusk in the clearing just outside Matterfort's western gate. There we’ll explain what must be done.

Warm regards,

Aaron and Amelie Fairborough

P.S. - Do not harm Roderick, our messenger. If you do, retribution will be swift.

Thomas was waiting for Leira to confirm what she wanted, but the decision was made for them, though he didn't mind in this case. He noticed what happened with the gnome lady and when she stomped over, he would take a read of the note and narrow his eyes. That was a threat alright. He did not like this one bit.

"Well I think we made the correct choice then. These bastards...at least we have a meeting spot though I am concerned about this 'father' of theirs."
OOC:
Do I recognise the Fairborough name?
Oct 31, 2024 11:01 pm
OOC:
@Thomas: You'd recall someone named Oswald Fairborough, who is likely the father Aaron and Amelie mention. He's a noted Matterfort merchant, dealing in all manner of goods...including some of dubious legality, if the tales are true. You've probably heard vague stories about his cunning and rule-bending.

Got it, thank you. I will wait for the others to respond before bringing it up.

"Well. It seems like our work is set then," Leira said. "Let's go see what happens at the westgate at dusk, I guess."
Nov 2, 2024 4:45 pm
"Indeed. Well, seems they are no mere gang of thugs. But to what end will this play out? They claim some sort of power through their father? Whoever that is."
Nov 2, 2024 7:26 pm
Wyla is still cursing, and some of the curses you hear are truly inventive. She's also pulled out her battleaxe, and occasionally whispers to it, promising imminent bloodshed.

"I know how it'll play out, Aen-wind: with me cleavin' all o' them from neck to navel! I was gonna let 'em off with a light whuppin', but now that they're tossin' out death threats, they've done pissed me off somethin' fierce!"

"I say we jump 'em as soon as we see 'em! I ain't doin' their stupid task anyway, and I ain't scared o' their daddy! If ya'll don't want to bloody yer hands, I'll do the killing myself...ya'll just keep 'em occupied until my axe can send their souls to whatever planes they're destined for."
