Whispers by the Water

Pristaine Fall Spectacular

The rowdy festival crowd cheers as you finish your set, holding red plastic cups full of beer up to the stage in salute from their picnic tables before returning to their conversations. A few zip up their jackets to the chilling evening air. The crowd begins to fill in as the final act of the festival, headliner Mad Margie and the Big Little Band draws near.

It's near the end of the Saturday events of the town of Pristaine's autumn end-of-year blowout. In a few weeks, the last of the summer holdouts will pull their boats from the lake and head back to their rich city lives. Those with children have already left, leaving an eclectic mix of retirees, weekend fishermen and college partiers to make the crowd difficult to please.

After you've unloaded your gear from the sheltered stage, you see a man in a cheap suit waiting for you by your van. He's smoking a cigar of all things.

Markus Crane

"My name is Markus Crane, and I have a proposition for you. But first, tell me... Do you really believe in ghosts?" The wind picks up just then, kicking up a small dust devil in the parking lot.

Let's have each of you describe your character, their thoughts, and finish setting the scene. Fell free to embellish the festival as you will.
Oct 19, 2024 12:57 pm
"Why, are you one? I don't really believe the dead can haunt the living, no." Says Hoffmann with a voice strained from singing, rubbing his forearms due to the cold. He's clad in a similarly cheap suit, and it feels a tad too thin for the weather. On his head there's a fedora, and in his mind only thoughts of dinner.

"Ghosts don't exist!" Pips up Artur from behind his father. He wears a hat much like Hoffmann's, and a warm jacket over a button-up shirt. He eyes the stranger with curiosity. Was this a crank?
Oct 19, 2024 2:07 pm
Huerago is fine with the breakup ending. Crowd looks to be a losing proposition. Another gig done. He had finished his bottle of vodka to keep himself steady. He had been on a hot streak for a while, so it was a fine time spent. Could get a heavy jacket on from the van too as it seems a touch chiller.

Keyboard Russian Huerago does interjects as he has his large keyboard with him preciously, "Well somethings do go unexplained. "

Owen, still enjoying the adrenaline of their performance, finishes getting his bass on its padded gig bag. That version of Voodoo Child was really something!
As he walks down the stage with the bag on his shoulder, his heavy leather jacket cuts the chilly wind easily.

"Ghost you say? They may exist alright, but are way less common than you think.
The last one I heard is still serving coffees downtown, I think his name was John"

Myles finishes putting his sax back in it's. Man he loved cutting loose on that horn. Almost as much as driving fast. He loves this kind of weather also so he is fine with the fall chill. As he comes down of stage with his case in one had and a beer in the other he hears the man and says"Hey Blue, did you hear this guy asking about ghosts?" He chuckles "Of course there are ghosts. Ain't you never heard of Casper?"
Oct 19, 2024 9:38 pm
"Of course Zoot!
Such a baby face that Casper, but they say he drinks more than you, me and my grandpa."

Hahaha
OOC:
For the record, you all know Blue enough to know that he reads a lot about paranormal/Lore. He does believe is all kinds of ghost, poltergeists, and the rest and he will get serious about them if they truly find one.
But before he can actually prove that whatever they are facing is really paranormal, his first guess would be that it is not really paranormal (just normal people doing some things that appear strange) so he may continue to make jokes about it.

"I would be more keen to all those horror movies."
Oct 21, 2024 1:25 am
Markus Crane
"Good good," he says, and tips the ashes off his cigar. "I've got a proposition for you then."

When you've put your instruments away, he continues.

"Lakeshore Haven, a summer lake resort on the other side of this lake, was abandoned after a brutal mass murder twenty years ago. The site has since become the subject of urban legends and unexplained phenomena ever since. Strange sightings, eerie sounds, and disappearing locals near the lake have reignited interest in the location. Now it's scheduled to be torn down without any real attempts at uncovering the truth. I made sure you were invited to this festival knowing that you have a reputation for looking into, shall we say, odd occurrences."

He puffs on his cigar and says, "If you're interested, you can follow me there and I'll explain what I know. If you're not, then I will bid you good day and that's that."
Oct 21, 2024 3:27 am
"I believe in money if you're talking about propositions," Burt says. He quickly adds, "But not that kind. I don't go in for that, but I wouldn't be opposed to looking into your 'odd occurrences , I guess, if everyone else is willing also. I'm not going by myself. As an aside, don't you all think we need roadies? My drums are getting a little heavy. Maybe I'm just old."
Oct 21, 2024 5:19 am
"I wouldn't mind having roadies, nor some good old coin.

Having said that, we are not in any hurry for the next Gig, so we could entertain ourselves in this little project. 'Summer Lake Resort' does sounds fancy!"

Owen leaves the bass in the back of their van and picks up a cold beer on his way back to the group.

"So, Mr.Cigar, I'm guessing you own this resort, right? What was the proposition again?"

"A real mystery! Dad, can we?"

"Uh, sure. If we get paid..." Hoffmann notes that the stranger hadn't mentioned anything about paying them yet.
Oct 21, 2024 9:57 am
Myles loads his sax in the van and grabs another beer. "You know what they say money talks" Myles does love stuff like this though. He loves watching ghost hunters, mountain monsters, expedition bigfoot on tv in his spare time.

Markus Crane
He is pleased with your mostly positive response to his proposition. "That's great, that's great. Of course, honestly I don't know what something like this costs. But I've got a little set aside. I'm a historian and this mystery would make a lovely book, I've got a fair bit of research done already, but the truth..." He thinks about it a moment. "I can manage $800, or a cool $1,000. Yeah, that's $200 each. And I'll pay for water and food for tonight."

To Owens question, he says, "No, no, Elijah Crane owns it. He's my cousin. "
Oct 21, 2024 2:48 pm
"Pay for food... we haven't eaten yet. Say, bring us to a nice eating place tonight, and tomorrow morning we check the place out."

"Oh! We could discuss the mystery over dinner tonight, and you could show us your research materials tomorrow!"
Oct 21, 2024 2:58 pm
After putting away his keyboard and other fun stuff, The Russian notes, "Mystery sounds keen. " He is quickly ready for travel.
Oct 21, 2024 11:01 pm
Myles looks over at Markus Crane "Well where you taking us for food there Daddy-O? I will follow you with the van. Or maybe Casper is cooking for us."
Oct 22, 2024 2:46 am
"Pay for water...?" Burt muses. I guess the tap doesn't work. Good to know, he thinks. "Sure. Let's drop our gear off and you show us what we need to see."
Oct 22, 2024 11:56 pm
Markus Crane
"Dinner first, is it? That's not a bad idea. Alright, follow me to the Watergate. That's a steak and seafood house."

He'll head off to his vehicle, a restored or otherwise well maintained International pickup from the 50s. After starting it, he'll await you loading up into your band van, and lead you out onto the side road around the lake.

The drive isn't long and you find yourself at a large log cabin looking establishment. There are only three vehicles in the parking. You can see a large deck hangs over the lake, although it's likely too cool for outside dining.
Oct 23, 2024 12:13 am
Once everyone is seated, Hoffmann orders the second most expensive thing in the menu for himself and his son to eat. Then he starts digging in.

Artur, meanwhile, produces a pen and a paper notebook from somewhere and gets ready to write things down. "You can start talking, sir."

"Well alright Mr Crane. You ready for some surf and turf there Burly?" Myles can't wait to inside and get a beer and a shot of kickin chicken.
OOC:
That is 101 Wild Turkey if anyone was wondering.
Oct 23, 2024 1:51 am
"I sure am if someone else is paying," Burt says with a grin. "Is this a popular spot for the locals, Mr. Crane?" There's only a few cars outside, but it looks like a nice spot.
Oct 23, 2024 2:20 am
Markus Crane
He locks his truck and looks around. "This is the hot spot for the area, but it's the end of the season. Not many folks around and those that are are at the festival."
Oct 23, 2024 1:28 pm
"Tell us everything you know about the mystery you want us to investigate, sir." Artur asks again.
Oct 23, 2024 1:58 pm
Huerago settle himself in. Orders something simple & some coffee. He is rather quiet and listening.
Oct 24, 2024 3:49 am
After your all in the restaurant and seated at a table, he says, "The mass murder occurred at the height of the resort’s popularity in the summer of 2004 when 13 guests and staff were killed by an unknown assailant. The killer was never caught."

The waiter comes, takes your drink orders them leaves.

"The killer’s final victim, Alice Moore, was found with symbols carved into her body, and her spirit is said to haunt the lake."

He waits for a second for that to sink in, then adds, "Local witnesses report strange lights over the water and muffled voices at night."
Oct 24, 2024 11:18 am
Artur notes that down, then asks. "You wouldn't happen to have pictures of those symbols, perhaps...? What was the final victim's background? What was the murderer's weapon? Were there any people present at the resort that day who weren't killed? Was your brother the owner at the time of the murders?"

Hoffmann isn't even listening, he's just wolfing down his expensive meal.
Oct 24, 2024 4:08 pm
"Wow, that's pretty grim," Burt says as he stuffs rare beef into his mouth. "Why do you want us though? I thought places like this loved to talk about how they were haunted."

"I have no pictures, or information on that. Sure, there were people who survived, but I don't know if they witnessed anything that really tells the story. Certainly none of those I spoke to know what happened. That's why I need experienced investigators, to ask the good questions."
Oct 25, 2024 10:40 pm
"Sir, can you provide names of those survivors? And also answer the three other questions... Oh, and does this place have cops? I think the cops should have pictures, although I don't know how we could convince them to share..."

Myles looks at eh others as he downs his second shot of 101 and takes a drink of beer to wash it down. As he cuts his rare steaks "Sounds like an interesting time. Y'all know I will drive. Do you have any of those proton packs like the Ghostbusters had?"
Oct 26, 2024 2:42 am
Markus Crane
He says, "You'd have to ask the police. They're about an hour away in Dindlesville. As far as I know, they're treating this as a, how do they say, cold case?"

As Miles starts joking, he grows impatient, suspecting he's just wasted a thousand dollars. He gets up and says, "Here is a key to the gate on the road. The rest of the grounds are open. When you find something out, here's my number, and I'll have your money. I'll make sure your meals are covered and you have bottles of water for the day tomorrow, and the night I suspect." H

He leaves a business cards and flees before he changes his mind about hiring a bunch of bozos.
Oct 26, 2024 1:58 pm
"Ok, food and water, plus a phone number to keep in touch. I guess that answers my questions," Burt says, packing more food into his mouth. "I suppose we start immediately?"
Oct 26, 2024 2:19 pm
"Let's go." says Hoffmann, having finished his food. Meanwhile Artur is feeling suspicious towards our employer...
Oct 26, 2024 3:00 pm
Huerago is ready, "No better time then the present."
Oct 26, 2024 4:54 pm
It's still evening, do you want to go to the haunted cabin in the woods at night, or wait until morning? If you wait for dawn, where do you sleep?
Oct 26, 2024 7:27 pm
"I would imagine stuff goes down night. Let's get it." He will head out the door toward the van.
Oct 27, 2024 10:15 am
Blue, his attention in his smartphone, has been researching whatever the past media showed on the house, and it's Terrible events (thus the roll below).

"Yes, Zoot is right, we should probably go and take a look now."
OOC:
I'd like to do a roll on lore which is Owen's investigation skill (at +2), and his 4th stunt (+2). how should I do that? I'm guessing a 1-3 dice roll where 1 is -1, 2 is 0 and 3 is +1... Then an adjustment of -2 to actually get a -1 to +1 range, then the investigation skill +2, and then the +2 stunt (lore) mod. That makes sense?

[ +- ] Owen's Stunt: Specialist
Owen considers what's he's heard of this place. The site is the subject of urban legends and unexplained phenomena, drawing in curious investigators. Strange sightings, eerie sounds, and disappearing locals near the lake keep the legend alive. Just what is the source of the paranormal activity, if anything, remains a mystery. Whether it's the ghost of the murderer bent on finishing his or her task, or vengeful spirits of the victims, or something dark haunting the nearby woods, no one knows.

Only whe he hears Drive my Car, he is brought back to reality. After all, he does love music!
Oct 29, 2024 11:08 pm
Myles looks around "Did he give us directions or are we just winging it?"
Oct 29, 2024 11:43 pm
Blue check Lakeshore Haven resort location in his "MapApp" and links his smartphone with the van's nav screen.
"That's the shortest route" he says when the van's screen shows the route.
Oct 30, 2024 3:19 am
It's not far, but the gloom grows ever deeper as night settles in. By the time you get to the gate, it is nearly full dark. One of you takes the key and unlocks the chain blocking the road then closes it behind you and gets back in the car. The woods are eerily silent, save for the mournful call of a loon out on the lake.

The crunch of leaf and twigs under the vans tires pops in the night, drawing attention from whatever lurks 'neath the encroaching trees. When the headlights shine on the main resort building, it's as if it appears out of nowhere.

Oct 30, 2024 9:38 pm
Blue bods to Burt...
"I'm recording video with the smartphone, Burly. You just hope that my camera doesn't see something your eyes don't."
You listen clearly Blue's ironic sense of humour in that last line...
Oct 30, 2024 10:05 pm
Hoffmann and Artur both turn on flashlights as well. Artur stays at the center of the group while Hoffmann walks ahead to the entrance door and tries to open it, holding the flashlight with his mouth and a screwdriver in his free hand, as if it were a knife.

The porch groans ominously as you place your weight on it. The door isn't latched, and swings open at a firm pull. Only leaf litter on the porch held it nearly closed. You suspect that the structure has been exposed to more elements than it's construction can safeproof against.

Aspect: Unsafe Dilapidated Building

Inside you see few signs of the former habitation, other than discarded bottles and plastic food wrappers, and a little spray painted graffiti. The shadows are profound and seem to move a little more than the moving flashlight can account for.

Aspect: Deep Shadows
Oct 31, 2024 4:21 pm
Burt gives some of the boards a tentative bounce to see how they respond to his weight. ""I'm not sure me and this old wood are a good fit, he says. "I'm hoping there's not much of a basement." He knocks on the wall for good measure, just in case someone has taking to sleeping here to avoid bad weather.

Also, what kind of objects are there in the room?

Myles will switch his camera from infrared to thermal to see if he can see any cold spots. From watching the shows he enjoys he know ghosts or spirits leave cold spots.
Nov 2, 2024 6:41 pm
As you look around and listen, you begin to hear sounds. The Russian hears it first, a soft whispering from behind him, toward the lake he knows is nearby. He can't make out the words, but he thinks there are two different voices.

Hoffmann watches over Artur who searches around, quiet. There is nothing in the manor other than signs from old parties, but the small one does find a floorboard that he intrigues him. He lifts it out of place and finds a moldy book. A diary.

Burly is focussed on the party signs, but nothing about any of it tells him anyone came by recently. Well, maybe earlier in the season. There is dirt, leaves and mildew sufficient to tell him even the newest visit was months before.
Nov 2, 2024 8:30 pm
Keen hearing Russian, "Quiet. I hear something from over there. Voices." He points in the direct he heard it at.
Nov 2, 2024 9:50 pm
Myles will swing the camcorder the way Hugo points hoping to catch a heat signature or some sound.
Nov 3, 2024 2:51 am
Burt is both thankful and disappointed that there hasn't been anyone here in a while. It's always easier when there's a more straightforward explanation, he thinks to himself. He cocks his head to listen to the sounds. "Are you recording?" he whispers to the others.
Nov 3, 2024 6:07 pm
Hoffmann and Artur try very hard to make out what words are being said. Artur has pocketed the moldy diary for later perusal.

You leave the main building, heading toward the sounds Huerago heard. As you get closer to the water, you all begin to hear it. At first, it is indistinguishable from the sound of a breeze in the leaves of the trees.

In the darkness, your lights shining around, you see that the undergrowth was likely once trimmed back, but is filling the place between the trunks now. Anything you find in this darkness with be more difficult.

As you get farther, a pack of wild dogs is surprised, growling in protection of some feast they're zealously guarding.

What do you do?

Blue is also keen on leaving the dogs alone. Specially since dogs are not related to paranormal events, and they don't seem related to their investigation.

"I'm not going to risk a fight against a pack of dogs... but I wonder if what they're eating could be a human corpse..." Hoffmann mutters, stepping back slowly with a firm grip on Artur so he wouldn't get any ideas.

Without getting closer, you don't think you can figure out what the dogs are eating. Rumors of missing people haunt your thoughts. Could this be one such case, or just a rabbit?

By backing away, the dogs leave you be. Do you look around, or retreat further, perhaps to the safety of the main building?
Nov 10, 2024 3:35 am
"Maybe we can look around for now? There's got to be more to see here than a few dogs and loose floorboards," Burt says to the others. "Maybe we can try and walk the perimeter?"
Nov 10, 2024 7:52 am
"We haven't search the perimeter, nor finish checking inside, I'm ok with both and don't care much about the order. Just... stay together, so we can help if someone breaks a leg."
Nov 10, 2024 2:54 pm

OOC:
Maybe with two players stepping aside temporarily, we focus on an activity that will eat up time but not leave anyone behind. I don't know what this might be, but from the GM's perspective, there are a couple of options. Burt votes for the perimeter outside, but inside is also a possibility.
Nov 12, 2024 5:48 pm
Your options are:

1) Return to the main house and give it a thorough search
2) Drive off the dogs and investigate their prey
3) Search out the source of the sounds in the night
4) Have a look through the other outbuildings (let's give these the aspect: Red Herring)
Nov 13, 2024 1:58 am
Myles looks around "I say we head back in the house and clear that before we get sidetracked."
Nov 13, 2024 3:13 am
Burt rubs his belly and says, "OK, but I may let you take the lead. I may be a little to fat for this place."
Nov 14, 2024 6:14 pm
Blue nods at the prospect of going back to the house.
Nov 15, 2024 7:07 pm
Aspect: Unsafe Dilapidated Building

Aspect: Deep Shadows

You return to the main building, leaving the whispers and the sounds of feasting wild dogs behind. The house seems darker than when you left, colder somehow.

You have some options: splitting up will put less weight on the creaky floorboards, but leave you vulnerable to whatever might make its nest in the house. There are three zones to explore: the main floor, the upstairs rooms, and the cellar.

Who goes where?
Nov 15, 2024 9:39 pm
Myles will look around for some kind of club after encountering the dogs some kind of weapon would be prudent. "I think the cellar would be a good place to start. At least that is where the ghost hunters always go."
Nov 15, 2024 9:52 pm
Blue sees Zoot looking for a makeshift club or weapon, and dies the same. He is not, in any way, a good fighter.. but figures it is still better to have some kind of melee weapon than having none.
Nov 16, 2024 12:36 am
You can easily break a wallboard off, and end up with one with nails on one end.
Nov 17, 2024 3:04 am
"Sure, but in that case maybe I should just walk out onto the floor. The fastest way to the basement is probably to just fall through boards here," he says. He laughs but tests the floor again to see if it will bear his weight.
Nov 17, 2024 12:56 pm
As Myles is pulling off a wall board for a makeshift weapon he looks at Burly"But don't Burly's bounce?" Hahaha

Myles looks around and find the stairs down. From outside, the moon and starlight give a small amount of glow through a small window at ground level. The stairs look to be in worse shape than the image floor on the main level.

Myles, roll some kind of Fate dice for for staying safe in those water damaged stairs. If you've an applicable skill, roll that otherwise roll +0. TN 1 for luck to hold.

Nov 20, 2024 11:01 pm
"Whoa, that was a close call." Hoffmann shines his flashlight into the hole where the stairs collapsed. Anything interesting down there? "We could buy a ladder, we could search for one, or I could build one, although I doubt a ladder made from this place's wood would fare any better than those stairs. Anyone remembers if we got a ladder or a rope at the van?"

"I think we should investigate thoroughly this level of the house before we try the basement," says Artur. Hoffmann nods in agreement. "What do you guys think? Oh, and whether we do it right now or not, I think we should all search as a single group once we do. Safety first!"

There isn't much that's reliable around here. Any rope or wood you find may be rotten. You could continue to try to get to the cellar, finding a way to get down without breaking an ankle, and hopefully getting back up. Or you could investigate elsewhere.
Nov 22, 2024 2:43 am
"You're right, Hoff; we should explore this floor more thoroughly," Burt says. "We can always come back with a ladder to head downstairs.
Nov 22, 2024 4:00 pm
"I agree fellas. No since in risking breaking a neck yet. That was pretty close call back there."
Nov 22, 2024 11:00 pm
"Shall we start, then?"

If two or more of Hoffmann's bandmates join them, Artur begins a very through but cautious investigation of the house, while his dad guards him.
OOC:
Others are allowed to lend +1s to the roll by aiding the action, right? Could you fine gentlepeople do that for this investigation?

I will be spending a Fate point here if the others' aid isn't enough for a success. And/or if it would get us a Success With Style.

The search of the house is meticulous. Working together, and wary of the fragility of the wood, you take your time and give it a thorough look over. Besides the waterlogged diary found earlier, however, you find only a stack of old newspapers.

Each of the newspapers, from different dates, tells of a new victim, suspected or actual. The only piece of actual new knowledge is that one of the articles mentioned mysterious symbols found on Alice Moore's body, and links the symbols to ancient occult rituals. In typical journalistic incompetence, what cult or even culture may have practiced these so called ancient rituals was not disclosed.

As you're finishing up the last upper floor room, you hear footsteps on the main floor. Your flashlights flicker out one by one.

Myles' camcorder has clicked off. Turning the power to it back on, it seems to work fine for a few seconds and then the screen scrambles with digital noise and the device starts rewinding on its own (rewinding in a digital sense).

Owen's neck hairs raise at the symbols, and a sense of alarm rises the longer he stares at it. However, the identity or the meaning of the symbols eludes him.

Hoffmann twists the battery cap open, shakes them, recloses it, then twists the front lamp. The limp clicks on.

In front of you, a pair of eyes floats in a dark face at the bottom of the stairs, then disappears to the left, toward the collapsed basement stairs. You don't get much of it or anything about the face's body, other than a sense of a very dirty face and a hateful glare.

Escaping the main house carefully (lest you fall through the rotting boards), you get outside. The whispering that the Russian first heard is louder. Ground fog has risen, obscuring the area in a funeral shroud.

You make your way back to the van, but ... you're stop when you're standing at the edge of the lake on a road that became a boat ramp. Did you get turned around? At least your equipment seems to be functioning fine.

Dec 4, 2024 2:18 am
"OK, yeah, let's go," Burt says and starts heading toward where he thinks the van is supposed to be.
Dec 4, 2024 10:59 am
Myles will hit the fob on his key chain to show the location on the van via the lights.
Dec 6, 2024 1:23 am
Arthur and Hoffmann head toward the rocks. Their flashlights penetrate the fog and reveal a circle of thirteen stones. Within, there are a number of personal items: friendship bracelets, rings, hair elastics, and even an unopened condom packet. They're all carefully piled in the center.

Meanwhile, Myles successfully locates the van.
Dec 6, 2024 6:36 pm
Burt immediately began to check the van for any signs of damage or that someone they didn't know wasn't lingering around their vehicle. "Hey! What a relief! It's right where we left it, I think," he says to Myles. "This is where we left it, right? Where did everybody else go?"
Dec 6, 2024 9:12 pm
"The van is over here." I will open the door and turn on the lights so the others can see it. I look to Burt "I think this where we left it. there is definetly some wierd shit going down here."

Hoffmann takes pictures of the strange arrangement of stones and items with his phone, from multiple angles and distances. Then, dad and son come up closer to give the objects a quick examination before heading back to the van with the others, not wanting to be left behind.
OOC:
I'm going to guess that a 'quick examination' should be Notice rather than Investigate, even though the latter would be much easier for me to succeed at. I'm rolling at +0 here, you can replace (well, not that you can literally edit it I think) that with a +3 (Investigate) if you're feeling generous. Can I substitute +1 Drive with +1 Notice in my sheet?

Dec 12, 2024 8:51 pm
Hoffmann takes the pictures and everyone meets up at the van, although the mists continue to make that harder than it seems it should be.

Once there, you have a number of things to discuss:
- Was there anyone in the van? It appears not, but it is hard to say. There's certainly no one there now.
- You've obtained some clues as to the disappearances from the waterlogged journal, and the newspapers.
- You've obtained audio/visual samples from within the house, but haven't watched them in depth yet.
- You've got pictures of the ornamental or ritualistic stones
- Lastly, you've seen evidence of wild dogs and possibly strangers on the property or in the house

To put those together, each of you can make a roll, something appropriate for intuiting what might be going on. If you have an applicable Stunt, you can spend a Fate Point to bring that in effect (and this decision can be made after a roll, just edit the post and say you're retroactively spending the point).

Hoffmann and Arthur put together that someone or something has collected these newspapers here for some reason, carefully curating only those regarding the murders and missing people. Whey would they bring such newspapers here is of course another mystery.

Burly can tell that the van has not been entered. The fog on the windows is from the inside, but that is some kind of atmospheric effect likely rather than from someone's breath. Of course, there are stories about fog and windows or mirrors and supernatural entities, but he's uncertain if that is at play.

It's one thing to be a ghost hunter but another to find actual evidence of the supernatural. Burt is sufficiently disturbed but knows they have a job to do. He holds up his phone, hoping for more evidence, and says to the others, "We have a contract. We need to try to get to the bottom of this. That is unless something pops out and attacks us. Then I'm out of here, no offence."
Dec 28, 2024 5:23 pm
Owen feels that the mostly likely explanation for the window is the souls of the victims attempting to warn you. Of what, or of whom, you cannot tell as the dead are said to be notoriously unable to concentrate but are instead trapped in their own last moments.

The footsteps from the lack grow closer, crunching on gravel.

Burly knows that they have recorded a bunch of footage. Perhaps reviewing that in slow motion would provide more details?

Burt simply turns his back momentarily to the fog and the noises to distract himself away from the strange goings on, and begins, slowly, reviewing what he's collected so far, trying to see if he can find a clue, a lead, some inspiration. He doesn't know how much time they have.

He zooms in on different parts of the photos and and plays/replays his video to see he can find something in the images. Every so often, he pauses the video to examine it like a photo and take in as much as he can, even every greasy smudge he's left of the glass of his phone.

"Please be something here, he mutters to himself. Mercifully, he hasn't had too much chance to collect to evidence and so there isn't much to go through. However, he knows the others took some footage as well.
Dec 30, 2024 4:46 pm
It isn't the video or the photo that catches Burt's eye, but a strange static that catches his ear. Playing it back loudly, he can hear what sounds like voices in the static. Could this be EVP (electronic voice phenomenon)?

It's difficult to make out, other than a few words: stone, circle, and break.

When he gets to the circle he grabs a stone and throws it toward the lake. There is a crash as it hits other rocks and the splash of water. He turns around to face the man chasing him.

There is no one there.

[ +- ] The initial information
The haunting was just that, complete with eerie sounds, sudden cold spots, electrical disruptions, footsteps of someone who couldn't be seen, electronic voice phenomenon, and ghostly writing on glass.

The key was the circle of stones, marked with occult symbols that are intended to bind spirits to the area. Just like Alice Moore, the victim was marked.

You don't know the motive, but the mass murderer of many years ago was attempting occult rituals to bind the victim's souls. Was it for personal gain, or for dark desires, it cannot be said. However, the spirits here were trapped in limbo, reaching out the only way they could. They were freed when the circle of stones was broken and cleansed by the lake.

Is the murderer still out there? Did he or she get what they desire? Or did they too fall victim to the lake. Who's to know.
