I've got your back, Grim

OOC:
Not a lover? Sry, couldn’t resist.
Grim exudes customary dwarven Hmph, as he peers with brown bulging-eyed infravision into present darkness. His left arm presenting his shield, his warhammer at his side…and his right hand clutching the holy symbol of Lucreon dangling around his stubby thick neck.

Ella tried to keep her breathing under strict control, as she listened to the approaching sound carefully.
OOC:
Is Akoslan in full darkness? If these are undead, can infravision allow us to see/target them?

I've assumed Grim has advanced just far enough down the southwestern fork to be beyond the range of Thrud's lantern so he can use his infravision. So Ella and Aksolan are within the lantern's range.

Regarding infravision, I'm going to say that you can make out most shapes, but you can't discern colours or fine details. So, yes, you would "see" undead with infravision.

Her vision being impaired by the heat and the glow of Thrudmar’s lantern, Ella took the necessary steps forward to be able to see any incoming foes in the dark.
OOC:
If Ella needs to step beside Grim in order to use her infravision, she will do so.

You hurriedly assume your positions and wait anxiously for those responsible for the sounds of the approaching footsteps to come into view …

In the dim light at the end of the passage, the silhouettes of the new arrivals are unmistakable - skeletons! Four of them. They jerk around to face you …

You cannot be surprised as you were well prepared for their arrival, but they might be. I will roll to check.

Rolls

Check surprise for skeletons - (1d6)

(2) = 2

Dec 4, 2024 4:45 pm
Wow! That's lucky. The skeletons are surprised for 2 segments. Actions that would normally happen over the course of a round may be completed in 1 surprise segment: talking, attacking, charging, closing to melee, etc. Therefore, you may do each of these things TWICE. Refer to OSRIC pages 125-128 if you need a refresher on combat and combat options.

Zach gnashes his teeth. First, he and Thrudmarr—clearly the primary dealers of mayhem and malice of the party—are stuck behind the "squishies". Secondly, Zach knows that slashing weapons, such as his beloved bastard sword, are less effective against creatures who have no flesh to cleave; no sinew to carve; no muscle to flay. Although he did have a shield…

Looking over his companions, Zach prepares to charge in order to protect those unfortunate party members in the first rank.
OOC:
@Burbage, would using the shield as a weapon to bash be possible? If I wanted to mathematically minmax, using the bastard sword would net me between 2 and 9 points with an expected value of 6 (given the 50% reduction). Zach is a fighter and should be aware of basic tactics.

Noticing the skeletal forms shifting in apparent confusion or disorder, Ellagel sends arrow after arrow at the enemies.
OOC:
She normally gets two attacks per round. Does that mean she gets 2 attacks per segment, for a total of four arrows? I'll send two attacks, and if @burbage tells me I can shoot two more, I'll do that.

Rolls

Longbow attack #1, damage - (1d20+2, 1d6+2)

1d20+2 : (2) + 2 = 4

1d6+2 : (6) + 2 = 8

Longbow attack #2, damage - (1d20+2, 1d6+2)

1d20+2 : (18) + 2 = 20

1d6+2 : (4) + 2 = 6

OOC:
In OSRIC, skeletons take no more than 1 or 2 damage per arrow due to their lack of flesh.
OSRIC says:
No matter how a skeleton attacks, whether rusty blade, a stone, or its own former femur, it always deals 1d6 damage. Cold and spells that attack the mind have no affect on skeletons. They take less damage from edged and cutting weapons, typically reducing the damage by half. Most piercing weapons, like arrows and spears, do but 1 or 2 points maximum per attack. Holy water inflicts 2d4 hp per vial that strikes.

Moves to fire over Grim's head, noticing which of the walking bones Ellagel is targeting.
OOC:
with bow, i hit AC7 with 12. So, both bow attacks hit.

Yes, you can bash with your shield if you like, but I will say it's only going to do similar damage to what OSRIC classes an "unarmed" attack, i.e. 1d2 damage.

Yes, if you normally get 2 attacks per round, you may make 2 attacks in each surprise segment. Similarly, if a character has 3 attacks every 2 rounds (e.g. due to a weapon proficiency), they may attack 3 times across the 2 surprise segments. Cool, huh?
Everyone - sorry, I should have said up-front, please can you tell me if your attacks hit, taking into account any modifiers your characters have. The skeletons are Armour Class 7.
Dec 4, 2024 6:04 pm
Grim - your turn will be successful. Please can you roll for number turned (2d6). I will roll for duration (secretly).
Dec 4, 2024 6:18 pm
Zacharias charges at the skeletons to make up the distance and catches them by surprise.
OOC:
I presume the +2 for charge will only occur on the first of the three attacks over the two segments as for the second two, Zach is already there.

Pausing for Attack rolls

Needed a 13 to hit AC 7, so all 3 hit. Rolling for damage.

Damage done: 3, 3, and 4 given 50% reductions

Ella forfeits a second round of shooting, given she can see the feeble effect of her shafts, and that Zacharias is now in melee with the foes. She steps back, bow in hand, and waits to see if Grim’s faith overpowers these creatures.
OOC:
I only have twenty arrows. Not going to spend them all on minimal damage.
Dec 4, 2024 10:49 pm
Jacky gapes for a second at the sight of walking bones. He raises his bow, then points it back down without firing - arrows would just pass through the cracks, wouldn't they?
