It’s no easy task pushing a relatively small button with such a long pole, but after a fair amount of cursing, Grim manages it. The centre of the left eye moves into the wall smoothly and with surprisingly little resistance. It travels for about an inch before reaching a stop. However, there is no discernible effect.

Zach listens carefully to hear if there was sounds of moving infrastructure or enemies.

Nope, nothing.

Zach grumbles great; something changed somewhere—maybe—and we'll have no idea what, when, who, how, or where. Like this entire expedition so far.

"Haha! Stupid monkey. Poke him in the other eye Grim!" Thrud grins widely, clearly just enjoying the theater of Grim poking things with sticks.
OOC:
I'm still trying to figure out how to play a 3 INT while being able to suggest potential useful actions lol

Undeterred, our dwarven fellow presses the pole against the right eye. With stout resolve!

Grim releases the pressure on the baboon's left eye; the button returns smoothly to its original position.

He repeats the process with the right eye. Again, it is easily depressed and, again, there is no obvious consequence - visibly, audibly, or otherwise.

A 3 INT? Aren’t you then both illiterate and not capable of speech?
Dec 12, 2024 7:12 pm
OOC:
Illiterate? Absolutely (although Burgbage genrously allowed me to be able to write "THЯUD"). Incapable of speech? Debatable I think. OSRIC doesn't have anything to say about low INT, but AD&D 2e says this:

"A semi-intelligent character (Int 3 or 4) can speak (with difficulty) and is apt to react instinctively and impulsively. They are not hopeless as a player character (PC), but playing such a character correctly is not easy."

I too often forget just how low I rolled and have certainly been playing him too smart to reflect a 3 though. Being completely non-verbal felt too boring. I considered playing more impulsively and just touching and pressing every button he comes across but I don't want to blow up the rest of the party. :)

OOC:
Gotcha. Zach’s 8 is positively genius compared to your 3. I think I’ll stick with his inability to get anyone’s name straight and ensure he doesn’t know calculus 😝

I definitely should find a way to dumb down Thrud's speech patterns. But it's hard when right now for example, I just want to say, "Someone should push BOTH buttons at once!" ;)

Thrud want monkey two eyes push?

After Grim pushes the second button, Ella suggested a last test: with one of her broken arrow shafts, the elf pressed one button at the same time Grim pushed the other with Jacky’s pole.

When Ella and Grim push both eyes simultaneously, the wall grinds inwards to reveal a flight of stairs descending into darkness.

@dracul104 - please don’t feel you have to let Thrud’s low intelligence hinder your contribution to the game. It’s absolutely fine to offer suggestions as a player, out-of-character, if you don’t feel it is something Thrud himself would come up with.

Jacky whistles on seeing the wall open up. "That's a nice trick. Good for us too! If there's any treasure to be found, I bet not many people's gone after whatever lies down there." He pauses. "Although... Someone warned us about the second floor, didn't they?"
OOC:

OOC:
Should we try and clear this floor first? With that other group wandering around I doubt there's much treasure to be had unless we go deeper.

OOC:
Spiders sound more interesting to me, though not particularly better for our chances. Nothing says they're necessarily hostile though!
Dec 13, 2024 10:27 pm
Grim grins graciously as the secret stairs reveal themselves to our adventuresome party! Ah, well done, Ella! Now we’re gettin’ somewhere!

He hands the ten foot pole back to Jacky, and adds, I say we finish off this floor, albeit I doubt we’ll find very much more, unless that other group mighta missed somethin’.

De spiders down below..well, dey aren’t goin’ anywhere any ol’ way.

"Well, why bother with this floor if we don't expect to find any valuables?" Jacky argues, spreading his hands.
