An altar of the LORD DEUS.
Quote:
LEGENDS SAY when the Otherworld threatened
the Firmament, THE LORD DEUS bade us take up
steel and spell, defend the weak, and prove even
the lowliest knave could someday be a Legend.
OOC:
The 2400 series of games are all based on a simple paradigm: roll only to avoid risk. You succeed at what you attempt, if it is possible, unless suffering the risk would prevent the desired outcome.

You roll 1 die to avoid risk. By default d6, but often d8 or larger depending on whether your character's skillset is invoked. Sometimes d4 if your character is hindered by injury or circumstance. Allies can help by sharing the risk and rolling an appropriate die. The GM will guide you as to what's at risk from your intended action, and what dice to roll.

Rolling 1-2 is a DISASTER: It may prevent you succeeding, and you'll suffer all the risk.

Rolling 3-4 is a SETBACK: You may succeed only partly, or entirely with some of the risk.

5+ is SUCCESS, risk-free.

FREE COPIES OF THE GAME ARE AVAILABLE.
You're a group of competent heroes, would-be legends. You're in the Grey Meadows, en route to the Valley of Shields where you are to scatter the ashes of a fallen prince across the muddy fields of battle. You may be gifted with Strength or Reason or Speed or Presence.

You're looking at a wyvern that is spiraling lower toward you from the cloudless sky. Lightning arcs between its talons. The waist-high grey marsh grass and ankle-deep water give nowhere to hide.

What do you do?

Looking back at the wyvern, I feel a spark of indignation. It merely grasped at draconic power. I had long since become it. Screeching at it from the depths of my bones I target the power building in its claw. And with the presence of a true dragon, overload, and push the weapon it was building to super criticality.
OOC:
I aim to be gifted with presence.

Welcome back Tibbs

Thanks, jomsvik!
I opened a game forum. Character sheet guidance is there. It seems like @jomsviking character will be a Cleric with Bestial or Thick-skinned + Fire-breathing and possibly Bolt. Thoughts?

Hi, I don't totally understand how this system works but it looks intriguing. If you still have an open spot I'd like to give it a try.

Hi, you're welcome to join.

The rules are available at the bottom of the game thread.

Basically you roll a die (d4, 6, 8, 10, or 12) based on how good you are at a skillset that applies to the risky thing you're attempting or trying to avoid. If it's 1–2 that's pretty bad. 3–4 is not so bad, but not good. 5+ is good. People can help you. You start with some kind of talent based on which skillset you pick as your primary. All the skillsets start at d6 but you can bump one up to d8 and take two "characteristics" or just bump two skillsets up to d8 or bump one skillset to d10.

I have a pregen character in the game, Lassara, a mute rogue. Check out her character sheet at the bottom of the game thread!

Will do!

*addendum* Looks pretty straightforward, and I'm liking the story so far. If you want another, I'd like to give it a try. You've got a cleric and a rogue at the moment, so it seems like some muscle might be a good addition. I was thinking something like an ancient guardian golem that's been inactive for centuries that is somehow reactivated either by something in the Prince's Ashes, a curious but seemingly meaningless item in Draconic Presence's possession, or as a result of being blasted with the lightning from the wyvern... [Str d8, Mechanical, Thick-skinned]

Just an idea.

I like the idea of the wyvern zapping a defunct golem back to life. You could be tromping/sloshing through the meadows looking for someone to talk with. Arriving on scene along with the wolves …

… get a Warrior talent along with Strength d8 …

I can see Second Wind or Endurance being pretty natural for a golem, but probably the former for a guardian rather than a servitor. So we'll go with Second Wind.

Lohapurusha, literally "Iron Man" is a welcome addition. Frontline clerics seldom live long and a dedicated warrior is exciting.

I like it, she's never had a name before, only 'The Guardian!'

Tibbs and I frequently use Sanskrit for naming conventions, at least in high fantasy games.

You playing a dedicated warrior means I can focus more on being a monk/shaman which ultimately means we can get deeper. Deeper is darker. And darker is better.

Very cool. I think Sanskrit is fascinating. I'm pretty excited about this. I'm imagining The Guardian/Lohapurusha having been ensorceled and in 'The Dreaming' for centuries, during which time her magically imbued 'programming' slowly evolved into a consciousness and a capacity for self-determination that she will be discovering just as she rediscovers the changed world around her.
