Chapter Three - Return to the Mournland

Tryne follows Kalli on the road, making sure to keep plenty of distance enough to stop without running into the horse with the coach. He had his new rifle available if needed, although he has not figured out how to shoot and drive at the same time. He might have to think about that - maybe he could mount the rifle on Talon... ideas for another time.

Tryne has no issues keeping pace with Kalli as she is pushing her horse as hard as possible without exhausting the creature. Laulalith is certain they haven’t been followed, 37 and Torhak agree. The dusty town of Salvation Outpost disappears behind them. They wind through rolling hills, lush and green. Here and there rabbits frolick, a hawk can be heard calling somewhere in the distance. Quite unlike their experience in the Grey, the travel is pleasant. The late morning sun warms Tryne and Torhak’s faces as white clouds pass overhead. As noon approaches, they come upon the Brey River. The border of Breland and Thrane.

The mighty river is spanned by a tall bridge. On the far side is a thick, broad leaf forest that has nearly enveloped an old, but still active fort. Two guards lazily question those that cross.

"State your business in Thrane.", a young blonde hair man says.

"I am Kalli Alran. Captain d'Medani knows of my crew the Grey Dogs. The cart is with me. We seek passage through the Thornwood."

"Yes, yes, Miss Alran. Carry on. The Captain may wish to see your treasures on your return again.", a dark haired half elf says as he waves them through.

The road passes the fort. Tall stone walls surround the keep, but show signs of damage, neglect and recent repairs. Numerous soldiers can be seen within its gates. A few stone workers continue the slow repairs.

"Who is Captain d'Medani again?" Torhak says to Tryne beside him.

The artificer shrugged, "I assume he runs this fort - apparently Kalli is well connected."

Torhak snorted, "Apparently" he rubbed his shoulders and arms, they were sore from carrying the water kegs earlier, he'd really over done it, and should have carried them one at a time.

Laulalith considers asking the guard whether he has seen Ikar's crew or the rest of the Grey Dogs recently, but decides against it. The security is so lax that they move quickly past guard, and it would be conspicuous to return and ask.

Instead, she keeps a sharp eye on the road and surrounding forest as they proceed.
OOC:
Well, not so sharp this time.

Kalli overhears Tryne and Torhak's conversation. "She runs the fort. Channara d'Medani.", she says with a giggle. "Obviously, she is Thrane and was posted to rebuild the keep after the Day of Mourning. This wood has had a lot of creatures emerge from the Grey and wander through.", she says grimly.

"The Captain is curious about the items we bring back. I think one day, she may even seek some of her own."
OOC:
Roll me a perception check for the trip through the forest. Let me know if there's anything you're interest in.

As they ride through the forest Meepo perks up and looks out the window for anything he may have seen in his alchemy book. Never know where you can find interesting ingredients for interesting mixtures.

Tryne nods, "Always good to be on good terms with the guardsmen."

Tryne tries to keep an eye out, especially on the road ahead for anything which might damage the coach and wagon.
OOC:

Party all went blind at the same time - bad things incoming :)

Torhak nodded to Kalli, "Thanks for sharing" he then turned eyes forward and kept an eye out for dangers in the woods around them! His mind drifted to their return to the Mournland though, their impending trip through the wall, and what they might encounter.

37 simply sits quietly, watching the terrain roll by from his customary seat in the coach.
OOC:
Damn...
"Hey, I think we're lost. Let's ask those two Ancient Black Dragons for directions!" 😂🤣

Vice realizes he was keeping his eyes closed, dreading entering the Mournlands. "Have we crossed through the mist yet?" he ask, looking out the window.

The crew continues to be led through the dense forest by Kalli. There’s a certain relief from the sight of the Grey Mists to the east. Yet the thought is never far from their minds. Dull green light from the sun’s rays passes through the thick canopy overhead. The sounds of birds chirping and rodents chattering is a welcomed distraction from the anticipation of returning to the Grey.

Except Vice. The entertainer often lives in the moment. Taking in the scenery, there are moments of odd silence, broken by the sound of cracking branches. At one point, the gnome swears he sees a tree moving along with them, but the moment passes and they push onward.
Mar 14, 2025 6:36 pm
Vice blinks a few times, then looks about the cart to see if anyone saw what he thought he did. "Hey gang, does anyone know where soarwood comes from? Is it made of living trees?" He ask.
Mar 14, 2025 7:37 pm
"What do you mean living? All trees are living, including the soarwood. But it is not native to Thrane as far as I know."
Mar 14, 2025 8:05 pm
Torhak shrugged to Vice's question, "No idea" he wondered about why the question was brought up, but Vice also had seemingly had random thoughts.
Mar 14, 2025 9:26 pm
"Oh, yes. That's a fair point . . . " Vice says, trailing off, not finishing the thought. "Regardless, we need soarwood to fix an airship we are friends with. We were told Windchaser might be able to help us. Sounds like he's wrapped up in the situation with the Grey Dogs somehow. "
Mar 14, 2025 9:37 pm
"Do you perhaps mean sentient trees?" 37 asks Vice as they ride.
Mar 14, 2025 9:39 pm
Laulalith raises an inquisitive eyebrow at the mention of the airship, but decides to ask about the other unknown. "Who is this Windchaser?"
OOC:
I'll accept a link to a past thread as an answer :)

Kalli Alran
As evening approaches, Kalli fears increase. She hasn't said much during the journey, instead she plods with intense determination. She gives her horse a few breaks at the various streams the group encounters and keeps her fed. As night falls, Kalli resigns to settling down for the night.

"We're still several hours from the edge of the forest. I think we should rest before entering the Grey tomorrow. The river is tricky to cross, but there is a bridge that survived."
