"Of course, sir. Apologies for our presence." The servitor replies. "All the doors are unlocked already, for your viewing convenience."

He looks through the, now open, door, seeing and acknowledging Hali, Benji, and Emma, but his eye narrow as he studies you, as though not quite sure who you are or if that is a problem now that the main meeting is concluded. If you wish to remain undisturbed you will need to do something to allay his suspicions.

As the door swings open you all see a group of men —or they look like men— standing around a stone figure laying on a stone table. Looking guilty, they quickly gather up an assortment of elaborately patterned squares, handing them off to one near the back, who slips them into a bag, before they silently make their way out of the church, nodding to each of you in deferential greeting.

Lady Halifax makes a small noise of dissatisfaction when Jacob mantions her name, and turning, you may notice that she is a little distance away from you, almost as though she was trying to 'be somewhere else'.

- Benji -

You know of these guys. They are called 'the Servitors' and serve —appropriately enough— some of the more powerful families and Factions. They famously have no real will or motivation of their own, and finding a group gathered in an out of the way spot like this is unheard of.

Emma stepped aside as the three men walked past her. She recognized two of them; the silent, non-talkative driver, and the man who crept up behind her when she arrived at the castle. Both men unsettled her with their vacant expressions, and she did her best to avoid looking into their dead eyes as they passed.

She did turn her head once to glance behind her to make sure they were truly gone rather than sulking in the shadows, before allowing herself a quiet sigh of relief and stepping into the church, still holding on to Benji's arm.

Benji waves goodbye to the Servitors as they shuffle past. "That was odd," he remarks to Emma as they step into the church. "They don’t normally gather in groups like that."
Dec 2, 2024 1:14 pm
"Thank you. I'll let Mr. Parry know how efficient you were," Jacob adds, hoping that dropping Elliott's name will dispel any lingering doubts. Plus, there's the advantage that they can't directly verify their alibi with him.

"Come on, Cr... Hali. Stop pretending to be offended; the path is clear now," he says once the Servitors have left. Stepping onto sacred ground is far from pleasant, akin to a hundred needles pricking his skin incessantly, and Jacob must fight the impulse to flee the area.

"What do you mean 'they don't normally gather in groups like that'?" she was a bit more apprehensive about the three men after Benji's comment, and more thankful she wouldn't need to ride back home to London with one of them. She took the opportunity to unhook her arm from the vampire's elbow, brushing her hand over his shoulder in appreciation before turning to take a look at the small Chapel, and the figure of stone lying on the granite table.

"They’re called ‘Servitors’. They’re magical constructs of some sort, not real people. Or that’s what I thought anyway. Those ones sounded like they were… socialising?" Benji frowns, puzzled, then shrugs. "Well, I’m glad they have friends, I suppose. I’ve always felt a bit sorry for them. It mustn’t be very fun being told what to do all the time."

He looks around the church, trying to imagine where he might hide treasure if he had some. His eyes fall upon the stone table in the centre of the room. "Oh! Could there be something hidden under the table, do you think?" He crouches down to examine the floor around the base of the stone table, looking for scrape marks or other signs that the table might have been moved at some point.

There are other sleeping statues scattered around the church. There are definitely sections of the floor that are swept clean of any dust, even more so than the rest of the well-polished floor. This might well indicate a need to move something aside without leaving scrape-marks. You think you are onto something.

Weren't these figures used to bury knights or people of importance? That presumably means there is something beneath them. But the poking around seems to be making Emma uneasy, maybe a quick answer is called for.

"They are??" Emma tried to process the new information. The mention of the 'Servitors' sparked a whole new set of questions. The treasure hunt took a backseat for a moment: "Who made them? What purpose do they serve? And how many of them are there?"

While Benji seemed to have an unusual sympathy for them, Emma didn't share his sentiment. The 'Servitors', whatever they were, made her uncomfortable. They just felt wrong. They were a mockery of life itself, and she found them eerie, almost in a monstrous sort of way.

Following closely behind the vampire, she missed the details that he, with his sharpened vampiric senses, had picked up. She didn't immediately register that the floors in this area seemed cleaner than the rest of the chapel. But when the vampire crouched near one of the tables her curiosity piqued again "You think something’s hidden underneath the floor?"

Benji blinks, befuddled by Emma’s barrage of questions. "Well, I always figured that the wizards must have made them…" he answers, though he doesn’t sound terribly certain about that. "I did hear a rumour that they were actually corpses, reanimated by necromancy or dark magic, like puppets, but I don’t know if that’s actually true. Anyway, they mostly just do odd jobs here and there. There are a few of them around the city and there were a bunch of them at the last one of these parties I went to."
Delirium says:
But when the vampire crouched near one of the tables her curiosity piqued again "You think something’s hidden underneath the floor?"
"Maybe! Only one way to find out, I suppose." With seemingly little effort, Benji lifts the slab of granite and shifts it to the side so they can take a peek at whatever lies beneath.

Should I make some kind of roll? Maybe Let it Out (perform a fantastic feat of vampiric strength or agility)?

You make what should be a herculean effort look easy. The whole stone 'coffin-like-structure' breaks free of the floor and falls aside with a crash. A crash that probably was not heard all the way up at the castle, but the street and the gate are a lot nearer.

Lady Halifax says a very unladylike word, then tries to cover her displeasure with surprise. "Sorry, you startled me. But look: There's a tunnel under there." She exclaims.

And indeed, a dark, but well-maintained tunnel leads away from a flight of stairs that were covered by the stone knight.

"Shall we take a look?" She asks, already striding —as much as one can 'stride' in high-heels— down the stairs. "Does anyone have a light?"

Benji winces as the huge stone table slips out of his hands and crashes into the floor. "Sorry, that was heavier than I thought it would— Ohhh! Look at that!" Immediately forgetting all about the priceless antique he just dropped, he bounds down the steps right behind Lady Halifax, excited to explore the secret tunnel he found. "Wow, I’m really good at treasure hunting!"

Emma fought to stay calm as the vampire effortlessly lifted a stone slab that probably weighed a metric ton without breaking a sweat. Maybe she should have been more cautious around him than she had been; Shelyna Artmitage’s warning about ‘accidents’ was suddenly feeling all too real.

"Wizards" she murmured, still in a shocked haze.

For a moment, she considered turning back to the castle instead of following Benji and the mysterious woman into the dark crypts beneath the chapel. But there was no one waiting for her at Arundel. Eliot wasn't there to protect her, and she remembered how the vampires had eyed her like she was their next meal when she first entered the ballroom. With a resigned sigh, she slipped off her high heels and left them by the stairs before following the others barefoot into the shadows.

"Okay, ladies, mind your step," Jacob says, while he switches on the torchlight in his smartphone and follows Benji.

The rough stone tunnel leads a long way —definitely further than the back wall of the church above— before there is an opening to the right and left. A quick glance one way shows a room filled with antique weapons and armour, the other way contains antique earthenware all neatly stored. The tunnel continues forward into the dark.

"Please allow me," Jacob says, looking around both chambers and the tunnel. "I have a good nose for finding things of value."

Emma is not sure, but she would have said that Jacob's eyes glowed red for a second. That must have been some weird reflection from the smartphone's torchlight, right?

Using his demonic powers, Jacob tries to sense the presence of any objects that are a repository of power due to their antiquity or magical nature.

Your senses are overwhelmed. It seems everything stored down here is 'a repository of power of a magical' nature. A few items in particular appeal to you baser instincts, but they are not exactly 'pocket sized' and also not the priceless information-store you (and probably Crowley) were hoping for.

Why were all those antique weapons and armour stored in the crypt underneath the chapel? Shouldn’t they belong in some museum, or on display at the castle’s armoury? She didn’t know much about the earthenware, but from a quick glance those too looked ancient, some of them likely dating from before the castle was ever built. She was tempted to open one of the vessels and take a closer look, to satisfy the curiosity, but managed to hold herself back. It wasn’t her place to disturb what had been left undisturbed for so long, and besides, it was better to wait and see what the others would make of all of it first.

He knew he should just keep going, but Jacob couldn't help but take a closer look at the armoury. This was his life, after all. That's why he had chosen to stay on Earth, because he had this never-ending curiosity for rare books and antiques like this.

One of the weapons stood out from the rest because it seemed out of place. There, among the medieval English swords and suits of armour, a curved dagger seemed to whisper in Jacob's ear.

He took a closer look. The blade had an intricate design depicting a scene of some kind of leopard attacking an antelope while a large bird flew away from the fight. These daggers were called jambiyas, and the craftsmanship of the blade was usually a sign of the importance of its wielder.

So Jacob's idea is to take it, unless someone wants to stop him for whatever reason ;)
