"What’s that?" asks Benji, curiously, appearing by Jacob’s shoulder to see what Jacob’s looking at. "Is that the treasure?"
Dec 9, 2024 1:00 pm
"What?" Jacob turns to Benji with an absent-minded expression. He seems to have forgotten there were more people with him. He then turns to stare at the dagger again, without answering Benji's question.

Emma was uneasy when Jacob reached for a sharp blade, of all things. Her discomfort turned into outright nervousness when he brandished the knife with an absent-minded expression. Taking a cautious step back, she quickly realized that hiding behind a super-strong vampire wasn’t any better, so she took a few steps more - back toward the stairs, just to be on the safe side.

"I said—" Benji begins to repeat himself before realising that Jacob is no longer listening again. He narrows his eyes at the knife suspiciously then looks at Jacob, trying to figure out if the demon is under some kind of spell or if this is a normal level of fixation. He waves his hand in front of Jacob’s face. "Jacooob! Helloooo! Are you all right?"
Dec 10, 2024 9:52 am
Jacob seems to somehow recover from his trance, and finally takes the dagger.

"Yes, I'm alright, thank you. And indeed, this is a sort of treasure. I need to inspect it more closely, but it's likely related to the Night Sisters, and it might serve as a bargaining chip with them. I believe they're more knowledgeable about Lizabeth's discovery than they let on," the mix of lies and wild guesses appears as a natural justification for Jacob, who doesn't want to be judged as a vulgar thief if he takes the item.

- Emma -

Through the open hole at the top of the stairs you hear voices: "... a crash, yes" and the creak of the door opening.

You have moments before they notice the rather obvious damage, the gaping hole, the light down below, and your shoes...

What do you do?

Crap! they must have made more of a ruckus than she had anticipated, and now someone has arrived to investigate. There was no way to stop them from noticing the gaping hole leading down to the crypts once they opened the door to the chapel.

"Go and do your thing. I'll try to stall them" she whispered at Benji, and without waiting for his response, started up the stairs.

- Benji -

As you watch Emma rush off to 'stall them', you realise you are missing someone. Lady Halifax, it seems, continued down the tunnel when you got distracted by side-rooms filled with treasure.

Distracted by the situation with Jacob and the knife, Benji is startled when Emma suddenly runs off. "My thing? What? Emma, wait—"

He hesitates for a moment, not wanting to abandon Jacob and Lady Halifax (and only now noticing that Lady Halifax is missing), before he hears the approaching voices and hurries up the stairs after Emma. Hoping that Emma will be able to delay whoever’s outside from entering the church for at least a few moments, he picks up the stone table he knocked over and carefully tries to move it back into place (trying very hard not to make so much noise this time).

Emma silently thanked herself for having the foresight to remove her shoes before descending the stairs. If she had tried to rush back up in her stilettos, she was certain she would have twisted her ankle. As she reached the top of the stairs, the door to the chapel swung open, and she quickly moved toward the entrance, hoping to block the view of the gaping hole in the floor.

She didn’t need to fake her distress or breathlessness for the man standing at the door. This was the same man who had appeared behind her when she first arrived at the castle, offering a tour of the grounds. One of those soulless Servitors, whose mere presence made her skin crawl. He was the exact type of man (if she could even call him that) who was completely immune to her feminine charms. She wasn't going to manipulate him into giving her a free pass, like she did that traffic officer last week. This didn't bode well for her.

"The noise" She drew in a shaky breath "you heard that too??"

"Yes, ma'am. We heard that." The Servitor says politely, only pausing for a moment to assess before motioning for one of his companions to check inside.

"The crypt is open." The checking Servitor calls with an eerily calm voice. "And the vampire is here."

"You will have to come with me, sir."
"You will have to come with me, ma'am."
They say in unison.

Benji and Emma: What do you do?

Benji freezes midway through picking himself up off the floor as the Servitor pushes past Emma and sees the open crypt and the overturned stone table (now in quite fragile condition, having been dropped twice). Catching Emma’s eye, Benji winces sheepishly and mouths ‘Sorry!’

To the Servitor, he puts on a cheerfully oblivious smile and responds, "Of course! Where are we going?"

Emma muttered a silent curse as the Servitor brushed past her. She worried about what being caught would mean, the consequences of sneaking in weren't something she wanted to face. But Benji's casual demeanor put her somewhat at ease. He looked unbothered, even cheerful. Maybe they weren’t in for some horrible punishment after all.

"Let me grab my shoes" she offered a small smile and headed back to where she had left her shoes, and quickly slipped back into her stilettos "ready when you are, I guess"

The Servitors take note of where Emma's shoes were, at the top the open stairs. They know that Lady Halifax (and some unknown) also entered the church, and one of them remains behind as you leave.

"To the office, sir." A Servitor answers Benji. "There will be some questions."

They have made no threatening move and are still being impeccably polite. One offers his arm for Emma before she steps onto the cobbles, but will make no —outward— objection if she prefers to lean on Benji again instead. They seem to be steering you towards the castle, through the main entrance where there are still other visitors milling around.

What do you do?

"Oh? Whose office?" Benji asks as they follow the Servitors back up to the castle. At the moment, it seems like the best course of action is to be pleasant and cooperative. Running or fighting would only get himself and Emma in more trouble than they’re already in…

Emma, naturally, preferred to lean on Benji rather than any of the soulless Servitors. She wanted nothing to do with them, and given the circumstances, allowing them any hold on her felt like a terrible idea. She trailed back toward the castle, wondering about where they were headed, and what awaited them.

"To 'The Administrator's' office, sir." The Servitor replies to Benji, If he, maybe, would have preferred to leave this unknown to heighten the tension, he seems compelled to answer your question... even if he did not provide more information than he needed to.

You have to wait a moment as a car picks up one of the guests, then you are led through the entry hall and the throngs of visitors. The Servitors are surprisingly discrete, and —while you are surrounded— a casual observer is unlikely to notice more than a coincidental accumulation of strange, expressionless men near you two as you pass.

Just before the main ball-room, the lead Servitor motions you towards a door, opens it and allows you in. The office is smart and spacious, a large window overlooks the courtyard and drawbridge, the walls are lined with tapestries where they are not covered with glass-fronted book-shelves. There are suits of armour on two corners.

Otherwise the room in dominated by a large desk with comfortable chairs. A small computer seems out of place on one edge of the desk.

Also on the near-side of the desk is Emma's handbag.

The Servitor looks around the room, and, finding it empty, turns to you politely: "If you wouldn't mind waiting." He motions you in and closes the door behind you, leaving you alone together.

What do you do?

"Feels like I’ve been sent to the principal’s office" Emma smiled playfully at Benji, trying to ease her own tension. It was a nice office, and the first thing Emma did after retrieving her purse was have a look around, starting with the rows of books in the glass-fronted shelves. What a person eads could tell her a little bit about their character. Of course, if they take TOO long to get into the room, she just might try to see if she can log into the computer sitting at the corner of the desk.

- Emma -

Rather disappointingly, the books are mainly about the modern world and business, basic computer and MBA type stuff. Your purse seems mostly undisturbed, except to look inside enough to find your name.

The Administrator is probably busy with all the visitors, they keep you waiting a while, and it feels like it will be a while longer...

What do you do?

Benji smiles back at Emma, glad that she doesn’t seem daunted by the situation or cross with him for dropping the stone table again. He nervously fidgets with a loose button on his sleeve as he takes a seat in one of the chairs. "Should we figure out what we’re going to tell this ‘Administrator’ person? I don’t want to tell them anything that might endanger our friends, but I worry they might already know about them."
