With no time to think, Rocketeer tries to evade the incoming projectile with a barrel roll.

Mad Rocket Scientist - (2d6)

The projectile whizzes towards the two, who are both unable to dodge it. As it gets closer, you quickly notice that it is a spear...but instead of a sharp point, it has a rectangular device on its end.

Once it's within a few yards of you, the device pops open, sending a glowing blue net wrapping around you both. The net saps both Rocketeer's armor and Tomo's abilities, preventing them from immediately escaping...but strangely, this doesn't cause you to plummet to the ground. Instead you float down to the top of the butte, landing a bit roughly, but not what you'd expect from such a height.

The net's glow then stops, and it's now a normal brownish rope color. You can extricate yourself without much trouble.

However, a figure appears from behind some boulders and strides towards you. Seeing its ears, fangs, and green-tinted skin, you can tell it's not a human, though you can guess it's a male of whatever race it is. Though its clothes are tattered and well-worn, it has plenty of weapons, gadgets, and gear on its person.

He makes no move to attack you, instead stopping about 20 yards away and leaning on his spear. He then speaks....

The being (perhaps surprisingly) speaks English, with a rough accent that sometimes transposes vowels. He also peppers his speech with harsh-sounding words which are probably from his own language.

"The OmniCorp cube explodes. White light steaks into the sky. Now two strangers appear in the sky, flying as if this is a land of no danger. Grazzhnak, very grazzhnak."

"Best to thank Chak for pulling you out of the sky, drog-rakhs. Otherwise carrion soon enough. Or maybe you're a foe, sent to finish off Chak when all others have failed? No, don't think so. Too stupid for that."

"Tell me your tales, strangers. Perhaps I'll tell you some...hmmm...items of import? Yes, a fancy phrase I heard once."

Floating safely to the ground instead of becoming a gravity powered meat crayon? Nice. Someone who wants to talk and maybe help instead of execute a man in front of her or do weird stuff to Matilda? Also nice. Power nullifier not set to on? Tomo has no idea who's handing out universal power nullifiers like candy, but she'll take it. And she still has her stuff, which is also nice.

All things considered, a pretty good outcome by Tomo's standards. Tomo is left to weakly fumble with the ropes entangling her, her limbs lethargically pawing through the air like an upturned turtle would.

"Umm, thanks? ...Is one of those items of import some directions home?"
Apr 23, 2025 9:05 pm
"Home? Where is that? Earth, perhaps? You look like earthlings I've seen."

"No matter where home be, you cannot just walk there. This is Malkengard, different dimension. Likely portal in OmniCorp cube. So it is said, at least; Chak never been inside. Also don't know any others who have. Some claim, but all lies. Force field protected cube. You came from cube, yes? Did you see thing? Or maybe destroyed in kragthul."

"But there is magic here. Maybe someone move you home. Chak cannot; have a few magic items, like net, but not the snagdar to cast spells. If you find caster willing to help, they will want something in return. Will you pay? Maybe, maybe not...."
Apr 24, 2025 7:18 am
"I'm afraid we didn't see much of anything in the 'cube' besides bodies. We were captured by OmniCorp, and next thing we know, we're in this fresh hell. I guess it could be worse, but I'm not really intending to stay longer than necessary." Rocketeer shrugs after freeing herself from the net.

"Could you point us towards a caster that can help us? In exchange, I could fix up a few of those toys you've got." Rocketeer eyes the gadgets on Chak's person. "You don't want them failing when you need them, right?"
Apr 24, 2025 9:10 am
"Kill them?" Fei-fei sniffs and shakes her head. "Hate to say it, but I'm not the type who condones that stuff, even if they're bad guys. I'm not a judge, you know? Someone probably knows more about the legal side of stuff."

"Reckon with the stuff delivered and omnicorp shooting, I'm gunna go see what the big fuss is and maybe save the others."
Apr 25, 2025 2:50 am
Tomo finally extricates herself from the net. Hopefully, Matilda can work out a deal. Tomo doesn't have much to offer...unless the people here have never had cheese balls before? Maybe it's not all that unlikely, given how the Omnicube was apparently inaccessible to the denizens of this...place. Maybe it would be like going back in time to blow the mind of a medieval peasant with artificial "made with real cheese" flavor. It is a rather addicting flavor, even if you're used to it...

Chak makes a clicking noise upon hearing Rocketeer's offer. He also smiles...well, it's more like a grimace, due to his tough orcish features, but the effort is there.

"Your offer good. But I fix my own things. That way, know ins and outs."

"But if you want pay me for knowledge, give story. You know what caused cube explosion? Why you captured? Others certainly noticed cube blowing, will converge there soon. Certain they won't find useful items?"

"As for caster for home-movement...I know things. But what are you willing to do? Sacrifice babies? Sell soul? Go on dangerous quest? Become concubines for certain time? Such spell would be powerful, not given for free. You must decide what you willing to offer."

"Tell Chak that, and I tell you where to go."
Apr 25, 2025 9:21 pm
"You're worrying about legality when it comes to OmniCorp? Oh my. You got a lot to learn...."

"Anyway, battle's over. We won, you helped. Thanks. Here's the ingot, as promised."

A slot opens on her tech-pack, and she pulls out the impregnium ingot. It's about the size of a loaf of bread. It looks like a standard gray metal ingot, except if you tilt it a bit, the metal takes on a shiny, greenish cast.

Echo presents the ingot, but won't hand it over until you present the flash drive with Eliza's info.

Meanwhile, she decides to question Bulwark: "Where are those three you captured, Bulwark? No tricks or lies. I've got my scanning eyes on you; I'll know if you prevaricate."
Apr 25, 2025 9:29 pm
The cyborg chuckles, and takes his sweet time responding.

"Eager to meet your 'sister,' girl? Well, they're in one of our prisons...in Malkengard. But during the battle, I got a notification. Something went awry. The portal on the Malkengard side is kaput. Either offline or destroyed completely. We can't get there...not unless the Malkengard portal is miraculously restored."

"What're ya'll gonna do about that? Build your own portal? Even you might be stumped by that, Echo."
Apr 26, 2025 5:36 pm
"Oh, I've got a story for you. Basically, it all started out when I was trying to get Tomo here to an interview. On the way, we ran into some asshole called Ragnar Thunderheart. I think I had some sort of previous business with him yesterday? I'm not sure. Didn't quite feel like a stranger though. Anyways, Tomo pukes all over him, which ends up causing a scuffle. Ragnar and I took each other out, then an OmniCorp carrier showed up. This huge cyborg man comes out and has us loaded into the carrier."

"When we wake up, all three of us are in cells, powers sapped by nullifier collars. It wasn't three for long, because that same cyborg fuck comes in and blasts Ragnar's head off. Said the scientists were making breakthrough on his magical sword Lightningfang, so they didn't need him anymore. No skin off my back personally, but that brings me into what caused the explosion. This is only a hypothesis, but I think something went wrong when those scientists were trying to crack the secrets behind Lightningfang. In their research and development room, there was signs of an explosion in the center of it. I also picked up some of the energy signatures Ragnar and his sword gave off. I didn't actually see any sign of the sword though, and its wielder is obviously dead, so I can only guess the sword blew itself up so it couldn't be studied, or it teleported, releasing a violent burst of energy in the process. Magic is volatile and finicky like that. Either way, I'm guessing it was the cause of the explosion."

Rocketeer considers what she's willing to do... "Sacrificing babies, no. No point to selling our souls either. Being a concubine is a last resort. That just leaves dangerous quests. I'm no stranger to life-threatening situations. Hell, it could even be fun."
Apr 26, 2025 5:51 pm
At the mention of the high price to pay, Tomo scratches her cheek.

"...Do you guys know what cheeseballs tastes like? It's pretty good...better than killing a baby. Maybe better than killing multiple babies..."
Apr 26, 2025 8:23 pm
Chak again makes that clicking noise, and lets out a harsh cackle at certain points during Rocketeer's story. But Ragnar's death, and her dismissive attitude, clearly troubles him.

"Quite a tale, yes, yes. Many things to consider. Big lesson maybe don't puke on people holding magic swords?"

He stares off into the distance for a bit, but leaves it at that.

"This Lightningfang destroyed? Perhaps, perhaps not. Teleport or fly away? Yes, seems better chance. Most magical items aren't suicidal. Here, at least. Don't know how work in your world."

"Chak will get closer to cube, see what he can see. Also will keep eye out and ear open. Maybe Lightningfang still here, flying around. Maybe it looking for new owner."

"So...dangerous quest your choice? Believe you should head north, into the mines and chasms. Dwarves live there. Faded from what they once were, but all things faded here. Still, they want trinkets and valuables always, and they good builders. Advice: if they first refuse to help, challenge them. Few dwarves can ignore an attack on building skill."

To Tomo: "Have heard of cheese, and balls, but not cheeseballs. Is Earth deliciousness food? You have some?"
Apr 27, 2025 4:18 am
Big lesson? Somehow, this doesn't feel like that kind of learning experience.

Tomo reaches into her hoodie pocket and offers Chak a cheeseball to try. It'll be helpful to see how the people on this side of reality handle unpronounceable chemical names rivaling that of demonic monikers.

Chill Mera ask Echo; "So is he telling the truth? They are just . . . stranded somewhere?
OOC:
thanks for covering for me while i was gone. Looks like things got crazy
Apr 28, 2025 9:58 am
"Oh, it's weird science shit?" Fei-fei rolls her eyes. "Boo, that's boring."

She hefts the ingot, knowing she needs to return it. Jamming her hands in her pockets she turns to where her car and companion are waiting. There's always a chance one of her organisation would have a portal, considering all the mystic stuff they get up to, but something stops her from exploring that angle yet. After all, this isn't an organisational issue.

"Even if he's telling the truth we may as well see what the corp are up to right? Better than standing around."
Apr 28, 2025 10:54 pm
Chak takes the cheeseball carefully, staring at it as if he can divine its essence.

"Not what Chak expected. But if you eat, will try."

He pops it into his mouth and starts chewing...and immediately grimaces. A real grimace this time, not an orc-smile that looks like a grimace. But he gamely continues, until he's swallowed the snack. But as soon as it's down his gullet, he takes several large gulps from his waterskin.

"You eat...and enjoy? Not for me. Tastes like it shouldn't be eaten. Even color wrong. But I thank you for giving me one. Now learn one more thing about Earth."

"So, you heading to dwarves? If so, do not fly straight there. Fly, walk, hide...repeat. Otherwise, something knock you from sky, and they may not be helpful like Chak."
Apr 28, 2025 11:02 pm
Echo glares at Bulwark, her hands opening and closing. If you two weren't there, it's a good bet she'd lop off the cyborg's head without a second thought.

"Yes, the sadist is telling the truth. They're stranded in Malkengard. So good luck with that."

It's assumed you handed over the flash drive in exchange for the ingot. Echo puts the drive into a compartment on her tech-pack, then seals it shut.

"But he's wrong: I'm not interested in meeting my...counterpart. It seems she has different goals and sensibilities...which doesn't make sense, but I suppose that brings up the eternal nature versus nurture debate."

"Anyway, I'm outta here, before more OmniCorp shitheads show up. If you're not up to killing these four, I suggest you at least maim or KO them. Otherwise, they'll come after you soon enough."

With your business concluded, Echo activates jetpack mode, and prepares to fly away.

Rocketeer smiles, amused by Chak's reaction to the cheeseball. "Believe me, there's some good foods on Earth. That is not one of them."

She takes Chak's warning to heart. She has no idea what's waiting for them out there. "We'll be careful then. I hope these dwarves enjoy a stiff drink like the ones I'm familiar with. I could use one."

If Tomo's ready to depart, Rocketeer takes them down from the butte so they can begin heading north to the mines on foot.
